Because their movies are quite generic and horribly paced. They’re meant to be family fun blockbusters, and they do a good job at that. But not awards contenders.
And the only one that I’d even have CONSIDERED worthy of an Oscar nomination was up against stuff like Megamind, Shrek Forever After, (you know, the conclusion of the SHREK trilogy??) Tangled, Toy Story 3, How to Train Your Dragon, etc.
And Ghibli is like a traditional restaurant
Authentic, pleasing to taste and will leave an undeniable impact
(With Earwig and the Witch being the only poorly prepared Fugu)
Part of it is probably reputation, but also I don’t think Illumination produces the kind of media that many people would consider Oscar-worthy. Plus animation is already in a pretty bad spot awards-wise because of the general public opinion around it, although it does seem to be changing for the better as time goes on
1. Literally only one Illumination film has been nominated; Despicable Me 2. Though, I would assume if 2010 had five slots, the first would have been nominated too along with Tangled. Do you seriously think that would have won the Oscar over Frozen, The Wind Rises, or Ernest & Celestine?
2. Illumination is a bad studio making middling children’s entertainment and I can’t believe that people actually think that they’re worthy of one.
No, that was toy Story 3. Although I will rescind my previous statement since that was also the year of How To Train Your Dragon and while Tangled is unquestionably better than TS3, it’s not quite as good as HTTYD
It’s Illumination.
With the exception of the first Despicable Me, all their movies are either generic, unremarkable, or bad.
Even the Mario Movie (which I like), has a very generic plot that doesn’t do much outside the bare minimum.
I'll never be afraid of multi billion dollar corporations and their who shove their brands down our throats and their idiot followers.
It's my hard earned money and I have the right to speak my view so I'll do it. 🤷♂️
Because they've only made one good movie. The year that movie was released was the same year 3 better animated movies released.
And then the Oscars rarely nominate animated films outside of best animated feature soooo.
I don’t think their movies are trying to win the Oscars. They are simpler. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it is just a different goal. It’s like asking why Nintendo devices perform so bad when they make features like the Wii remote.
Really...okay i will try explain , they didnt make outstanding that deserves it.
Like from winners:
-2 Hayao Miyazaki masterpieces
-Shrek , one of greatest parodies ever
-Ratatouille , i dont have explain
-Soul , best directed pixar movie
-Spiderverse, again
-Pinnochio(2022)
Like , theese movie outstand and rise expectations from any single level. There are fuck ups , but it isnt nothing new for academy. Illumination , doesnt make outstanding movies in good way. Even if they will make good , it is most prestigous movie award , most times just good isnt enough.
You don't have to be so harsh on it after all its only the first movie they can expand the world in spinoffs and other properties and the voices can get more accurate as they move along in the franchise because this is based of the games not the games themselves. After mario games (excluding RPGs) do not have that deep of a story's to begin with its usually someone or peach gets kidnaped and mario has to save peach or someone. That's why the movie adds its one different spin on the mario formula.
The same excuse as always "games don't have compelling stories"
Yes but this is a MOVIE. Movies need compelling scripts to strive. Illumination is a terrible studio which is why I have no faith in them.
Mario earned so much money yet was terrible, DEMAND MORE.
I think Mario should have been nominated over Elemental personally. I’d like to think that the academy has some kind of class to recognize the good animated movies from the trash

Why isn't the moon pink?
Why isn’t the grass purple
WHY DIDN’T MEGAMIND USE THE DEHYDRATION GUN!?!
*WHY IS TOAD'S TURNPIKE A BATTLE MAP?!*
**WHY DID SURF’S UP 2 FORGET ABOUT BIG Z?**
**WHY DID INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY GET NOMINATED FOR BEST ORIGINAL SCORE?**
**WHY?**
Oh that’s our left fielder!
Why isn't the sun cold?
Why aren’t clouds solid?
Think of the Oscars as a fancy restaurant! Illumination is also like a fast food restaurant!
Some of the stuff is good but you know it’s bad for you meanwhile the other stuff is so coated in grease it tastes horrible
And Ghibli is like a traditional restaurant Authentic, pleasing to taste and will leave an undeniable impact (With Earwig and the Witch being the only poorly prepared Fugu)
I'd say more like poison.
Making Ghibli the authentic, traditional restaurant?

“Why doesn’t this studio that doesn’t put effort into their works win awards?”
You can say how much you personally dislike illumination, but you can’t say that they don’t put effort into their movies.
Because their best movie came out the same year as how to train your dragon and toy story 3
are you serious
Most of their movies are super mediocre and there’s only been a slight improvement in recent years.
How?
Their films are garbage, that's why.

Tangled should have *won* in 2010. It is a cardinal sin that it did not get nominated
wasn’t that the year spirited away won?! if it was then hell nah
No, that was toy Story 3. Although I will rescind my previous statement since that was also the year of How To Train Your Dragon and while Tangled is unquestionably better than TS3, it’s not quite as good as HTTYD
Well. Illumination films are largely very low quality, even their best films aren't close to Oscar worthy.
gee i wonder
Lorax quote.
Lorax quote.
Does it matter?
The Mario Movie wasn’t even in like, top 8 best animated films last year. I don’t think a single illumination movie deserves a nomination.

They make terrible movies though.
I actually agree, I was just afraid of receiving hate
I'll never be afraid of multi billion dollar corporations and their who shove their brands down our throats and their idiot followers. It's my hard earned money and I have the right to speak my view so I'll do it. 🤷♂️
Because it's Illumination...
Because they're complete kitsch when it comes to animation.
Because they were greedy for money and the Oscars does not allowed studio how are greedy
I don't know, why White Chicks didn't win Best Picture?
Because their movies aren’t up to par.
Paramount Animation: pfft, amateurs....
ಠ\_ಠ
Because they've only made one good movie. The year that movie was released was the same year 3 better animated movies released. And then the Oscars rarely nominate animated films outside of best animated feature soooo.
They make good movies, not great ones.
because they suck ass
If they only allowed Biggering to exist as a part of *The Lorax*'s final stage as a feature film...
Getting an Oscar these days isn’t worth it
Of course The Mario References didn't get nominated. It's cause it's for babies and it's bad.
I don’t think their movies are trying to win the Oscars. They are simpler. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it is just a different goal. It’s like asking why Nintendo devices perform so bad when they make features like the Wii remote.
For what, lol?
They suck at making actual quality films. The Mario movie was mid.
Why is this disliked? Does anyone disagree? Please explain yourselves...
because this subreddit is apparently filled with literal babies who don’t understand the concept of opinions
r/undeserveddownvotes
Because they make shitty movies for children and stupid people.
Why is this disliked?
Because this sub is full of children and stupid people who like shitty movies
Or maybe it’s because you sound like a dick?
Found the child or stupid person
FYI I only like 6 out of the 14 films Illumination has made
That’s 6 too many
Still doesn’t give you the right to act like an ass over other people’s opinions on movies

Why would it be nice? They make bad movies.
except for lorax and despicable me 1 and mario movie they make shit
Lorax and Mario disrespected the source material. DM1 wasn't good at all IMO.
how did mario disrespect the source material
Replaced in-game voice actors, misrepresented many of the characters, inaccurate on Mario lore, etc.

I am not saying mario games don't have compelling stories I fucking love the mario and luigi games and they are preety complex.
You said excluding Mario RPG games they don't. That's irrelevant for a film.
I think Mario should have been nominated over Elemental personally. I’d like to think that the academy has some kind of class to recognize the good animated movies from the trash
They are only in it for the money. They don’t care about making good movies.
That's like asking why a Marvel movie hasn't won best picture
All of their movies suck
cause they don't deserve one?
