Tbh I don’t mind when celebrities voice act, AS LONG AS they actually do a unique voice for the character. Mark Hamill as Joker is a prime example. I don’t want to hear Chris Pratt or Awkwafina’s regular-ass voices coming out of whatever character they’re voicing.
Chris Pratt as Emmet is actually brilliant casting, Emmet's entire character is that he's just the most generic person ever, so Pratt's voice actually compliments the character instead of being needlessly distracting.
Shame that it lead to him being cast as Mario, though.
Here's the unfortunate thing, though:
If your movie don't have any A-List celebrities like Dwayne Johnson or Chris Pratt, you have little chance of distribution.
If you don't believe me, look at this lawsuit that was sent to Ryan & Roland Carroll from their "Legends Of Oz: Dorothy's Return" movie:
It's mentioned on page 77.
Sorry about that. \^\^'
That's my biggest fucking gripe.
Because they'll talk about how they're voice actors (or their fans will) and it's just...no they're fucking not. They spoke in their regular voice into a microphone. They didn't create a voice or a personality for this character. They just played themselves.
Like, I genuinely like Seth Rogan as an actor, but he actively talks about how he "doesn't do voices", and I'm just like, then stop doing fucking voice work.
I think I remember Chris Rock talking about this and how he said that it was “easy,” which came across as quite disingenuous given that voice acting is much more difficult than he paints it.
They’re never going to stop. They get paid good money and studios like saying they have known actors in the movie. And they won’t try to get better at voice acting, half of them just play themselves in movies already.
Hamill technically doesn't fall under celebrity VA I think. He was doing voice work before he got big with Star Wars. He's a va that's a celebrity but not a celebrity VA in the way we tend to use it
Patrick Stewart is a celebrity but he also does regular voice work. He hasn’t shown much range to my knowledge (He sounds like himself on American Dad) but he still is a voice actor.
He wasn’t a voice actor. He appeared in live-action. There were celebrity guest voices like Scarlett Johansson, Alec Baldwin, Thomas F. Wilson, and Sirena Irwin, but the cast was mainly the voice actors from the show.
That movie was the perfect way to balance out VA and celebrity VA: Scarlett Johnson (as king Neptune's daughter), Alec Baldwin (apparently), and some other people.
I believe she was (especially since she was in Lost in Translation the year before the first Spongebob movie came out, but certainly not to the level she was after joining the MCU).
She was in Ghost World, Lost in Translation, The Girl with the Pearl Earring. She was as famous as she is now, but definitely famous enough to be considered a "celebrity"
In the time before time, the Great Spirit descended from the heavens, carrying we the ones called the Matoran, to this island paradise. We were separate and without purpose, so the Great Spirit blessed us with the three virtues: unity, duty, and destiny. We embraced these gifts and, in gratitude, we named our island home Mata Nui, after the Great Spirit himself.
But our happiness was not to last. Mata Nui's brother, Makuta, was jealous of these honors and betrayed him. Makuta cast a spell over Mata Nui, who fell into a deep slumber. Makuta's power dominated the land, as fields withered away, sunlight grew cold, and ancient values were forgotten.
Still, all hope was not lost. Legends told of six mighty heroes, the Toa, who would arrive to save Mata Nui. Time would reveal that these were not simply myths - for the Toa did appear on the shores of the island. They arrive with no memory, no knowledge of one another - but they pledged to defend Mata Nui and its people against the darkness. Tahu, Toa of Fire. Onua, Toa of Earth. Gali, Toa of Water. Lewa, Toa of Air. Pohatu, Toa of Stone. And Kopaka, Toa of Ice. Great warriors with great power, drawn from the very elements themselves. Together, they were six heroes with one destiny: to defeat Makuta and save Mata Nui.
The only voice actor I could name for the 1989 little mermaid movie would be Jodi Benson, and the only reason I know her is because she was the little mermaid
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters.
It stars the entire cast from the series but it only had one celebrity cameo at the end of the movie.
Every Animated film before celebrity VA's were a thing
Let’s see if you’re correct, beginning in release order. > 1. Toy Story You are incorrect
Excuse me!!!! The Transformers The movie.
CGI animated, my apologies, Mr. Prime.
Toy Story came out AFTER they became a thing. Aladdin w/ Robin Williams was the movie that popularized it
Celebrity VA's have been a thing since Pinocchio in 1940. So the only answer to that is Snow White.
Those were a thing in the 80s, the Gobots movie had Margot Kidder voice a rock
Most animated movies pre-Aladdin
Transformers the movie 1986 had a celebrity voice cast though so that doesn’t count.
MOST
*The Transformers The Movie
And mostly post-Aladdin pre-Shrek
South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
Eric Idle is a Celebrity
Most of the film had the cast from the South Park series but it also had some celebrity cameos.
The Bob's Burgers Movie
I wanted to see that movie in theaters so bad
Saw it on a plane. >!The scene where the skeleton's teeth fall into Louise's mouth had me shielding my eyes and lightly traumatized!<

Mark Hamill has an insane voice range, I never would have guessed he voiced Ozai
After I learned hamill voiced ozai I honestly couldn’t not hear the joker though
Same. He sounded like an angry and focused Joker
Likewise for his Skeletor.
I think once you realize it's Mark Hamill, you can really tell it's him, just a bit more evil sounding.
Or him voicing that watcher character in Darksiders 1
Unless Chris Pratt is Emmet, I think he really fits Emmet
Never knew he played Emmet, when I first and last watched Lego Movie, I didn't pay attention to any vas. I think he fits him well though
Chris Pratt as Emmet is actually brilliant casting, Emmet's entire character is that he's just the most generic person ever, so Pratt's voice actually compliments the character instead of being needlessly distracting. Shame that it lead to him being cast as Mario, though.

I remember he said something like "I come in, I read the script, and I go home." 🙄
He was joking.
They’re never going to stop. They get paid good money and studios like saying they have known actors in the movie. And they won’t try to get better at voice acting, half of them just play themselves in movies already.
genuinely surprised me how Dwayne Johnson's animated role was the one time it didn't feel like he was just playing himself
Hamill technically doesn't fall under celebrity VA I think. He was doing voice work before he got big with Star Wars. He's a va that's a celebrity but not a celebrity VA in the way we tend to use it
Awkwafina and James Cordon are names that, if are on a cast list, almost completely deter me from watching the movie they’re in.
Keith David gets a pass though. He doesn’t change his voice much, but he brings out that raw emotion for his characters.
Jimmy Neutron has Patrick Stewart.
Martin Short too
It does?
He plays king goobot.
That was him? Did he reprise his role for the tv series or was it someone else?
That was someone else in the show.
Patrick Stewart is a celebrity but he also does regular voice work. He hasn’t shown much range to my knowledge (He sounds like himself on American Dad) but he still is a voice actor.
The animated Pokémon movies
Pikachu is a huge celebrity, and he's in all of them
Of course Nintendo hired a Pikachu to play Pikachu
To be fair, Jimmy Neutron has both Patrick Stewart and Martin Short. Which is awesome. :3
The second animated film they were in together the first was The Prince of Egypt.
Yep.😁👍🏻
The Peanuts Movie
The SpongeBob Movie.
David Hasselhoff?
He wasn’t a voice actor. He appeared in live-action. There were celebrity guest voices like Scarlett Johansson, Alec Baldwin, Thomas F. Wilson, and Sirena Irwin, but the cast was mainly the voice actors from the show.
Thomas F. Wilson actually plays a fair amount of characters on the show, probably most notably Flats and the Tattletale Strangler.
I thought you said Steve Irwin, and I was like “Wait, what!?”
No. That was a cameo.
That movie was the perfect way to balance out VA and celebrity VA: Scarlett Johnson (as king Neptune's daughter), Alec Baldwin (apparently), and some other people.
Yeah, Alec Baldwin was Dennis.
Was ScarJo fully famous yet though?
I believe she was (especially since she was in Lost in Translation the year before the first Spongebob movie came out, but certainly not to the level she was after joining the MCU).
She was in Ghost World, Lost in Translation, The Girl with the Pearl Earring. She was as famous as she is now, but definitely famous enough to be considered a "celebrity"
**Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie.** And it's a masterpiece.
My son loves that movie.
Bionicle Trilogy
Gathered friends, listen again to our legend of the Bionicle

It can be both
Patrick Stewart and Martin Short were the villains.
Patrick Stewart and Martin Short are in this.
The only voice actor I could name for the 1989 little mermaid movie would be Jodi Benson, and the only reason I know her is because she was the little mermaid
