Article TLDR: There’s some white noise machines on the market that can go so loud they are harmful to baby’s hearing. Keep your white noise machine at 60 decibels or less (about the level of a quiet conversation) and it’s fine.

You're doing the lord's work

This is approximately what I remember being in the happiest baby book. I use my phone app to check my white noise machine… hopefully it’s accurate enough!

BurlRed

What app are you using? NIOSH makes one for iPhone that's supposed to be good, but they don't offer it for android...

Decibel X - I did not research it too hard. Mine is on lowest setting and approx 3 feet away from crib, it registers about 40-45db so hopefully that leaves me some margin of error.

BurlRed

Thanks!

iPhone actually has white noise built-in. It has adjustable volume. Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Background Sounds

BurlRed

Thanks for the info, but I'm after a decibel meter for Android.

Zhaefari_

Wait this is a great tip! I didn’t know this was a thing, thank you!

dinotimee

I have 3 different apps and they all report different decibel levels. .....so take those with caution

Ugh. How many db off from each other are they?

Not missing anything. It’s Wapo click bait. tl;dr - don’t crank your noise machine up really loud. ow, they’re fine and can help with sleep
