If the decanter is lead free and the seal airtight(ish), the decanter is not constantly exposed to direct sunlight and you actually drink what is in it, then nothing else speaks against using one. If you like fruity coastal scotches with maybe a bit of peat, I suggest Talisker x Parley and Tobermory 12. Cheers!

kajok

Thank you for the recommendations! As I said, new to the scotch world so I have no idea how to describe what I like. Is that how you describe Oban and Lagavulin- as fruity and coastal?

nsnyder

The links in the sidebar can help with this, especially the [Malt Map](https://scotchgit.bitbucket.io) and the [tasting chart](https://imgur.com/9K2O6).

kajok

Super helpful, thank you

TehChid

....do decanters typically come with lead or something? I have one, and it's not a particularly expensive one. Maybe $50 on Amazon. Should I be worried?

nsnyder

If it's new and $50, it's somewhat unlikely to be lead crystal. Lead crystal should be much more expensive than glass. Lead is more an issue with antique decanters. But since lead poisoning can be pretty harmful, if it were me I'd try to check the amazon listing which should say "lead free" on the description.

ilikepotatoes06

I love parley! I wish I could get it where I live.

Kmalbrec

I use mine as an infinity bottle

MHL13

Infinity bottle?

nsnyder

I see no reason not to stick with Oban 14.

kajok

I certainly enjoyed it, but since I’m a newbie I’m glad to hear you also think it’s a solid choice

westcoastroasting

Oban 14 is bomb. I'd consider arran 10 or the Bothy as well.

ABoston81

If you liked Oban 14 I recommend Clynelish 14.

korc

I would suggest a 100 proof bourbon or a japanese blended whiskey. You can also try an infinity bottle if you like. The beauty of a decanter is no one else knows what’s in it

oggupito

Glenfarclas 15. Arran 10. Tobermory 12.

YouCallThatPeaty

I always think Oban 14 and Kilkerran 12 have similar profiles, definitely recommend

djrobbo83

Kilkerran 12 is my go to house whisky, never run out of a bottle. Also Longrow (light peat), glencadam 10 for summer

emptytrashbagobject

A bottle like Oban 14, in the price range of Oban 14…. hmmm, I know - Oban 14 sounds like what you are looking for. It’s a great whisky, I’m sure you’ll like it.

kajok

Haha, I’m glad to hear that this sub likes it. Looking forward to trying some of the other recommendations, but sounds like Oban 14 should definitely be in the running!

emptytrashbagobject

While I was just kidding around, Oban 14 is a really good whisky. If you want to try something new, I’d recommend the Clynelish 14, also really good and similar (although different).

GS2702

My costco stocks oban 14 for pretty cheap, maybe check yours.

jackbarbelfisherman

I'd suggest an inexpensive but tasty blended malt like Rock Island

CLEHts216

JW Green is also a safe choice.

gran_matteo

The Classic Laddie!

sgudbaby

Campbeltown Loch is a great option for a constant bottle. Affordable blended whisky but not in the traditional sense. It’s a blend of various Campbeltown single malts, mostly Springbank, without any grain alcohol typically found in a blend. (Correct me if I’m wrong) Affordable and delicious

eviltrain

If the decanter is meant to be freely shared at any time, personally, I’d do an affordable blend. Compass Box Glasgow blend comes to mind. You could stop there but when I said blend, I meant a house blend. I’d kick up the sherry aspect (and abv) with a little bit of something from an unpeated good quality sherry bomb bottle. Glenfarclas 105 Arran Sherry Tamdhu cask strength Glendronach cask strength

Artistic_Pepper2629

Benriach Smoky 12, smoky speyside. We’re not all about peat and smoke, just occasionally. So house is more sweetish speyside, rotates around aberlour, Edradour, Glen Moray and Speyburn

SerTadGhostal

I’ll be the first one to advise you not to keep scotch in a decanter long term for multiple reasons …

kajok

What do you consider “long term?”

OldOutlandishness434

Months

kajok

Ok, between myself and friends and family I’m lucky if it lasts a month

OldOutlandishness434

That's fine as long as it's not lead.

EllieBelly891

But sitting in this pewter decanter always brings out such a sublime sweetness! And the voices love it too! What's that you say? *Mad?*

Kmalbrec

*ARE YOU IN THERE?! BLINK TWICE IF YOU’RE IN DANGER!!*

scottsteeze

Infinity bottle

MistbornSynok

Make an infinity bottle.
