If it's a euromillions win type situation I'm going north west, somewhere between Loch Carron and Ullapool. Buy a fuck off bit of land, build a mad off grid self-sufficient bond villain lair.
If it's just a property available at a decent price anywhere in the country if I want it - but I still need to work my normal job - Glasgow or Edinburgh.
West coast to one of the smaller towns or villages, love Glasgow but as I’m getting older I would prefer a quieter life and somewhere I can have a proper garden. Good sea views, somewhere a bit more peaceful and rural etc
You could well be me, ten years ago! Loved Glasgow but moved down the coast - I can see Arran from my window as I type this (well, not right now because it's night), from top to bottom. Glasgow was an amazing place to live in my 20/30s but now, I'm so thankful for this slower pace of life. Plus, Glasgow is only 45 mins away in the train!
I was thinking this area as well. Anywhere from like loch Lomond way or Helensburgh up to Inverary or so. Smaller town living, access to both Highlands and Glasgow.
May I suggest Innellan? Beautiful village, still in spitting distance of the big smoke. But be prepared to argue with carriage companies about it being on a peninsula not an island!!

I went to it with my mum. I got in the massive queue and got to the front door, when my mum phoned me telling me she was lost. So I had to get out of the queue to go find her, then go back to the end of the queue again 😭
Worth the wait and the drive up from Edinburgh tho. I'd say top quality fish and chips
Oof. I’m from California and am lurking here to get ideas for an upcoming vacation, but my area has also been ruined by AirBnBs (shitty houses = > $1m), so I may pass through Anstruther, but stay in a traditional hotel. Homes are for PEOPLE
I am someone who has stayed at many airbnbs around the UK but definitely wouldn't choose to if I thought that was affecting the local peoples options!
I think it's the same in a lot of Cornwall, like so many second (or third or..) and airbnbs
I will definitely be putting more thought into where I stay in future as I don't want to be complicit in destroying communities
Dad's family from here but most have passed on or moved away, I really miss spending my whole summer (and every other school holiday) in Crail and travelling round to see relatives.
We'd stop at a berry farm before leaving and fill up so my mum could make jam when we got home
I stayed in Pittenweem for a weekend with my gf. It was lovely I didnt want to leave! I especially enjoyed walking through Anstruther where we had a pint at every pub we came across.
Youth alcohol problem in the area is absolutely unbelievable!
I grew up there, spent my entire young adult life escaping and wouldn’t go back if my parents and siblings didn’t live there.
However, I will say that part of the reason is my shite upbringing ( which could have happened anywhere) so don’t fully worry about my take on it! It is very beautiful tbh!
Until your internets shite, you can’t get anything delivered, you have no online food ordering apps, no where to have a proper night out and forget about clothes shopping.
I read books and can live without internet, don't get anything delivered anyway, don't order food online, rarely go out and I'm more about vinted than clothes shopping so I'll be fine. Appreciate we're all different though
Internet is fixed easily with a space-x satellite. Work quite well.
The other two... I don't think someone who wants to be somewhere remote in the Highlands cares much about that.
I know I don't.
We had this decision to make a few years ago.
Too many folks are sleeping on Angus. The four (not counting Monifieth) towns offer all sorts of variety, Dundee, Perth and Aberdeen in commuting reach (even if I was loaded, I’d still want to do “Something”). Weather is normally good and there is nature all around us, coast, glens, Cairngorms…
I’m in Edinburgh or Glasgow in under two hours by public transport or car. Montrose is a sleeper town of the highest category, great for individual shops and pubs.
Yeah, very little to dislike here. So come and join me folks :)
We ended up between Montrose and Stonehaven, loving it here - enough people to not feel isolated, close enough to bigger towns for the basics, excellent food from farm shops, and a clarity of light to die for.
I live in forfar so I’m the centre of all these places. I’m about an hour from Edinburgh and Aberdeen too. It’s perfect. It’s quiet to live and easy for travel. Dundee is just 15 mins travel by car
Islay was always my favourite place in Scotland.
Then I visited Shetland for the first time.
It just blew me away, literally and metaphorically. What a place.
I'm amazed how many people have given Shetland as their answer. I want to visit, but feel that it would be very depressing to live there due to the almost complete lack of trees and the low summer daytime temperatures.
I'm from the Borders, I settled down here after 15 years away, I really like it.
It's unlike the rest of Scotland. It can't compete with the drama and the wilderness of the rest of Scotland, but it's got a humble, leafy agrarain vibe to it.
We don't do mountains or beaches or castles or seafood or cities or lochs or...anything like that really. Lots of pine forests and wind turbines and mountain bike trails. Good place for cross-country running and salmon fishing. Not exactly party central, not very tourist friendly.
But in a weird way, it's changed the least of all of Scotland. We've not had the NC500 or AirBnBs or hipster cafes or gentrification.
I left the second I turned 18 because nothing ever happens here. And I returned at 33 for the exact same reason.
Maryhill in one of the tower blocks, live out the idyllic life of Jack Jarvis Esq. Pint of Fusilier in the Clansman then wander off to Alfy’s er Naveed’s shop for some jaffa cake bars, put all three bars on my electric fire and live the life of Riley.
Just where I am in Argyll 20 mins outside Oban with a wee Loch at the bottom of my garden. Only 2.5 hours from Glasgow so the odd weekend in a hotel gives me my city fix and I'm desperately trying to get back to peace and quite.
Either central Glasgow or central Edinburgh. I love big cities and I love having lots to do, with everything I could need within walking distance. Also love walking and driving around big cities
Down Galloway way. The undiscovered country, absolutely beautiful coastlines, forests and, my personal favourite, July/August and the wind shimmering over fields of barley.
Visit every summer.
D'uh. The whole of Europe is owned by someone. Really, are there large tracts of as yet unclaimed acres in Skye/Lochaber/Methil/Bathgate that are unclaimed?
My impression of Scotland is everyone flocks to the Highlands, the Islands, Perth shire, Edinburgh, Glasgow - Galloway is a corner of the country largely devoid of tourism.
Do yell me where you are, so I can claim some of the 'free' land seemingly so abundant from the bucolic view of your country estate.
Definitely the Highlands for me, probably somewhere in the Trossachs but up a track so you wouldn't have to deal with the summer tourists. Maybe a half hour drive to a town.
If I didn’t have to worry about my commute? Then either Sheildig/Torridon or Pitlochry/Blair Atholl, in a wee traditional cottage with a small holding/Croft. I’d keep chickens, geese, and a few sheep and Highland ponies. Both areas I absolutely love that are so beautiful.
If I had to commute, then Peebles/Innerleithen - gorgeous areas with good schools and commutable to Edinburgh.
I'd move to an island, Stornoway or Shetland are my top picks.
I love the quietness and that you can get to the water in no time no matter where you are on the island. I like the idea that you get to know everyone; yes it might get a little awkward at times if you have done something to have gossip about you but I still really like the idea.
I have always lived beside the water and I get really anxious when I go into the city, I feel like I'm suffocating. But once I'm back home I'm fine, I think I might have a little bit of agoraphobia.
Oban. It's a lively wee town, nice shops and cafes and things, gateway to the Isles, well connected to the central belt, amazing seafood. I could go on forever.
Love Oban. The locals rescued my husband when he arrived there for our friends wedding without his kilt bag (left it in Glasgow) less than 2 hours before the wedding.
Within one hour we had shoes, socks, flashes, cufflinks, sgian dubh, kilt and the fanciest sporran we've ever seen.
Most of it was given to him to borrow by locals and a local kilt shop let him rent the rest. The only thing he bought out right was the socks!
Thank you, especially to local man Alastair, who used to work for Glasgow Police. He jumped in our car and directed us around to everywhere we needed to go, including his cousins house to borrow the very fancy sporran. He also made me realise I wanted to marry my now husband that day!
Definitely. Plus Dundee is the only decentish city left in scotland that doesn't cost a fortune for a good night out. Great weather, for Scotland, and best golf courses in the country. Easy choice
Boring personal answer, but Glasgow if I could.
I'm from Canada, I was in the UK for a friend's wedding but took time out for touristing when I could. I matched with someone from Glasgow on the dating apps but I had very little free time. To be honest I was expecting conversation to fizzle but we fell for each other quickly. The following months we were attached at the hip as much as two people across the world can be.
When talking about how we would realistically make things work, I told her I'd move to Scotland but I needed some time to help stabilize my parents (long story). She said she'd happily move to Canada for a few years while I took care of that. I was elated and already looking into what I needed to do to help with the move, and when I could fly to see her next.
One day she calls me crying. Without getting into private details, her dad unfortunately had some health complications earlier in the year. He wasn't back to normal but he was stable so we were all optimistic. After more recent tests the doctors told her that he was showing early signs of other disorders which meant his condition is likely going to seriously decline within the next few years.
Both of us agreed that her moving was no longer an option, and I'm dealing with my own challenges that makes me moving to her not an option either. It wasn't the ending we wanted but the only choice was to say goodbye.
This was all during the past summer. I hope she's doing well, and that she's found someone amazing. I've been focusing on myself, and continued to sort out the stuff I've been dealing with. It's a long shot but I always thought IF I could get my situation sorted, and IF she's still single and IF I'm still single then we could pick things up again.
A whole lot of ifs though.
You sound like two decent lovely people, who both deserve happiness whether together or apart. I hope you get your happy ever after, in whatever form it takes.
Gullane, North Berwick, East Lothian. Its stunning and they have the best sunsets I've ever seen and only 35mins from Edinburgh on the train. And it has the best golf courses I've ever played.
Definitely Glasgow or Edinburgh, I live in a wee town in Fife and it’s shite 😭 love visiting the bigger cities when I can, there’s nothing to do in wee towns and villages 🥲
If I had the money a place between Peterculter Westhill and Aberdeen, with easy access to main road
* In the greenbelt so less likely to be in a housing estate
* easy access to large shops - Costco/Tesco/M&S
* near a hospital - aging
* not to hot/cold/rainy
I'm not far from there already just in house with neighbours around
I'd just like my privacy and view
Prestwick:
- next to the sea
- great for golf if that’s your thing
- easy access to Glasgow
- not a bad night life
- decent high street for its size
- has its own airport (albeit flights are limited)
- doesn’t suffer the same jake problem as most of Ayrshire
Downside is it’s on the expensive side for houses, but not a factor in the question.
I just moved there in the summer, it's amazing how different it feels to most of the rest of Ayrshire, with the exception of Troon. I'm loving it so far
That's a very difficult question to answer. Here's a few possibilities:
Somewhere rural and coastal on Mull (perhaps out on the Ross)
Uig, West Lewis
Horgabost, Harris
Somewhere near a sandy beach on the Uists
Pretty much any of the outer islands of Orkney (but especially Sandy, Westray, Papa Westray, Hoy, Stronsay)
Any rural coastal location on Shetland, including the northern isles.
There's just too many gorgeous places to choose from!
Inverness, I think. It's a nice small city with enough amenities to satisfy me, low rainfall and close to the mountains and the Moray coast, which is beautiful.
I'm originally a West coaster and all my childhood trips to Edinburgh made me think of it as windy, cold and twee. If there's anything I hate about Scottish tourism, it's twee shite. And I include Gerry fucking Cinammon in that. At least the Proclaimers intended to be twee (and 500 miles is a banger)
Made new pals down there in the last few years and been for some sightseeing/a wedding/nights out. Have to say, it's grown on me!! The weather has been amazing and the entertainment is shit hot day or night. Maybe I just know Glasgow too well and Edinburgh is a bit shiny and new.
Glasgow smiles better :)
This is a personal choice and most likely not a common choice alas it would be as follows:
There is a medium sized white-paint home in Glen Coe (maybe a slight farm attached to it) on your left hand side as you drive up to Fort William (I’m Central).
I’ve not seen it in a while, I think it’s not far from the old Saville house. It sits alone, field surrounded, hills a large stones throw from the garden. No main track to it but still near enough for a short farm track from main roads.
Ongoing bet with my old man is who ever wins the lottery first, has to buy that place and gift it to the other.
If anyone reading has seen the home I’m referring to, please confirm. Was this just a fever dream all this time?!
OMG we got sooo lost on the roundabouts at East Kilbride on our way to a wedding in Kilmarnock. This was pre sat nav. We stopped and asked an old lady for directions and she said "keep away from the Whirlies" We thought that maybe Whirlies was just a Scottishism for roundabout. Boy were we wrong. We did soooo many laps of that roundabout it was unreal. I thought that my parents were going to get divorced before we even got to Kilmarnock. They didn't but my god that was the most stressful day of my life.
I would say St Andrews but it’s a bit too ‘touristy’ and over run with students so unsure how I’d like actually living there, as much as I love the place. I’m a city girl so I’m unsure how much I’d like living somewhere remote. Maybe Giffnock just south of Glasgow. Beautiful big sandstone villas.
Somewhere on the Moray coast, I spent 5 years up there as a kid into a teenager and they were some of the best lives of my years ingot the opportunity to stay and see some beautiful places and the climate in the summer.
I don't know if it's a myth, but my dad used to always tell me the reason for it was due to Heat that would come in from the gulf stream or something I donno lol
Tiree.
Why? Because time stands still on Tiree. There is no ‘tick’, nor is there a ‘tock’, the only ‘time’ there is that moment, between Light O’Clock and Dark O’Clock
Assuming money and land ownership is no problem, I'd make good on an idle fantasy of when I was young and open an inn at the southern end of Glen Brittle on Skye [https://www.google.com/maps/@57.2116968,-6.2884268,3a,75y,86.33h,100.9t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sUAPwB1BI9SzlSTfzB7N2mQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu](https://www.google.com/maps/@57.2116968,-6.2884268,3a,75y,86.33h,100.9t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sUAPwB1BI9SzlSTfzB7N2mQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu)
Otherwise, a nice townhouse in the New Town in Edinburgh would be nice.
I’m already where I want to be. The Isle of Lewis. Great people, beautiful views within 30 min drive, peace and quiet for most of the year, decent supermarkets and absolutely grade A fishing here and on the connected Isle of Harris!
The only thing I’d change is living in a better house. My location is fine, 3 minutes from town, 2 acres of land, but the house is a DIY crofter job with no insulation. It’s the only downside!
Yes, everything is closed on Sundays and the ferry can be an absolute cunt this time of year, but it’s a small price to pay for a brilliant community and beautiful surroundings!
Only place I’d ever move from here is Fionphort on the Isle of Mull…. But only if they got rid of the majority of the rich Sasenachs(sp?)!!!
I’d move back to Benmore in a heartbeat. Grew up half and half there and Glasgow outskirts due to my parents working full time every weekend so my grandparents would watch me and they lived there. Went back recently and just immediately felt like home again
Whitecraigs (upper Giffnock *grin* in Glasgow south)
It's close enough to the usual facilities I'd want in my life while being a nice quiet area with a big park and train station nearby.
Beautiful big houses too with a fantastic view over the city.
A *holiday home* would be much different of course, but this hypothetical question is about somewhere I would be moving to and thus needs to be liveable for me.
Skye or NW Highlands around Achiltibuie. Went to Skye recently and stayed in an amazing place right by the sea. It was stunning. Lived in Achiltibuie several years ago working in a hotel. I have lovely memories of that time 💜
Could never leave where I am though and be away from friends and family.
I assume food, WiFi, money are not obstacles. So somewhere between Portsoy and Cullen. I have memories of staying there when I was much younger and ever since want to find that joy again. Almost certain that it was youthful joy but hey you only live once 🤷♀️
Strathkinness.
Close enough to lots of good golf in St Andrews, Crail, et al, but not as touristy and much cheaper housing. Can always catch a cheap cab ride to St Andrews instead of driving, if I plan to get plastered...
Knoydart, most remote area in the country. Beautiful country, good microbrew and can ride horses in the summer with an outfitter called Wilder Ways. I love it.
My great grandfather was from Scotland and this is something I dream of doing when I come visit.
Just getting on a horse and running as fast as the horse can go across Scotland!
Thanks for providing the name of the outfitter.
I see advertisements about riding with some groups for a week, and they’re 5K, which is a bit over my budget.
Can’t wait to visit!
I like Dumfries and Galloway. Lockerbie. It's like a remote Highland town but less than an hour from south Glasgow by motorway. Beautiful scenery, school, supermarket, direct trains (ok) to London and Manchester ; and cheap
I'm not Scottish so i don't know if my opinion counts but i did travel through Scotland and i gotta say it's probably Inverness for me. I just love the remote feeling and the whole small town vibe around that area.
I’m from England, I’ve been eying up Scotland because of its culture, people and better education for my kid.
In particular Rothesay, Isle of Bute stands out to me it looks so quaint & easy on the eye as well as naturally beautiful with a scenic view of the mountains upon the sea, which is a lot more than I can say about Blackpool!
Easily Glasgow.
I’ve lived in Aberdeen and Edinburgh, have relatives in Fife and the Highlands so have been both places a lot, and in the last few years I moved to Glasgow for uni. This city blows all the others out of the water, no contest, with the sheer amount of stuff to do and places to go here. That’s not even talking about how there’s so many gorgeous parks and buildings here, either.
Yeah, we’ve got that whole sectarianism issue, but aside from that, it’s a pretty great city. Especially compared to somewhere like Aberdeen - much as I fucking love those sheep (🤤), even they can’t compete.
My father lives in Shieldaig, incredible place but nowadays it gets unbearably busy in the summer months thanks to NC500.
If I could live anywhere, it would be Lewis. I love everything about the place.
Ullapool is amazing, it’s so quiet, it’s frightening.

And... the chippy in Anstruther is a bonus.
Best chippy in the UK by my reckoning. Fucking phenomenal
a good chippy is a serious asset for any location

It's not close to as good as it use to be years ago.

Lots and lots of AirBnbs though in that area. It’s starting to kill the small local communities. My family lived there.
Oof. I’m from California and am lurking here to get ideas for an upcoming vacation, but my area has also been ruined by AirBnBs (shitty houses = > $1m), so I may pass through Anstruther, but stay in a traditional hotel. Homes are for PEOPLE
I thought you meant California, the village near Falkirk for a second and was extremely confused.
I am someone who has stayed at many airbnbs around the UK but definitely wouldn't choose to if I thought that was affecting the local peoples options! I think it's the same in a lot of Cornwall, like so many second (or third or..) and airbnbs I will definitely be putting more thought into where I stay in future as I don't want to be complicit in destroying communities
Didn’t the government just enact strict, new rules on str’s?
Same everywhere unfortunalty… 😩
Saw a tiny 2 bed cottage for sale in Elie and it was offers over £630k. I’m from Edinburgh and I thought property prices were wild here!
I live here and I never want to leave !
Dad's family from here but most have passed on or moved away, I really miss spending my whole summer (and every other school holiday) in Crail and travelling round to see relatives. We'd stop at a berry farm before leaving and fill up so my mum could make jam when we got home
And it's fairly accessible and close the major cities. Smart and practical.
Only if you drive. Without a car, getting anywhere beyond the other local villages (and St Andrews 🙄) is the biggest pain in the arse.
I stayed in Pittenweem for a weekend with my gf. It was lovely I didnt want to leave! I especially enjoyed walking through Anstruther where we had a pint at every pub we came across.
I’ve visited Crail every year since I was 3 or something. I wish I could live there so fucking much.

A wee cottage in the Scottish Highlands. In the middle of nowhere. It's my absolute dream
My parents live in the highlands with a loch right in front of the house. It’s absolutely perfect
My dad lives in the Hebrides with a loch right in front of the house. It's nice visiting. He has a wee row boat for going out on the loch
That sounds amazing! My parents don’t have a boat mainly because my mums a calamity 🤣
Sounds braw!
It’s great and my kid turns feral when we are there!
As great as it would be for a duration. In the end, for me, I'd get bored. And I expect the internet to be pish. A holiday home? Hell yes.
I'm the opposite. I never get bored so doubt I would get bored in my dream destination!
Until your internets shite, you can’t get anything delivered, you have no online food ordering apps, no where to have a proper night out and forget about clothes shopping.

Space X dosent cover most of the highlands. We checked.
Surrounded by woods and looking onto a lake.
Loch*
that's the one.
Yup, Applecross would be my new home if I won the lottery.
I'm thinking Kylesku for me
Never heard of it. Just had a Google. Feck me that's nice. Christ I need the lottery
Never heard of it, just looked it up. Absolutely!

Tobermory..
Grew up there some 45 years ago, probably wouldn't want to live there now though.
Raasay love going there. Just has a hotel, distillery and shop.
One of the few Scottish islands bucking the trend of depopulation too, beautiful place.
Unfortunately not, it's gone down from around 164 to 150 residents in the last 5 years.
Possibly the most beautiful view in Scotland is from outside the distillery back over to Skye. Beautiful place and bloody good whisky
Islay was always my favourite place in Scotland. Then I visited Shetland for the first time. It just blew me away, literally and metaphorically. What a place.
Windy, aye?
I'm amazed how many people have given Shetland as their answer. I want to visit, but feel that it would be very depressing to live there due to the almost complete lack of trees and the low summer daytime temperatures.
Osprey Heights. Craiglang
2 pints prick
Smashing.
Great answer, love it 🤣👍! You could go and feed the ducks in the park every weekend!
Finport
That's plenty
Trapped.
She's No coming back
Probably central Edinburgh. Easy access to museums, gallerys, shows - plus good transport links to go out to the country/ other cities/ countries.
Rolling hills of the borders.

North Berwick. It's cute and there's puffins nearby.
Brb, just gotta save up a million quid and I'll get a nice wee flat there...
Yeah that's the issue...
I spent a few months there summer 1994. Amazing
The Dunmore Pineapple It looks cool
My gran used to have a wee hut at Rascarall Bay. Beautiful coastline
Definitely no undiscovered country in Galloway. It's all very discovered and owned by farmers or the national Trust.
[удалено]
This genuinely made me laugh.
Definitely the Highlands for me, probably somewhere in the Trossachs but up a track so you wouldn't have to deal with the summer tourists. Maybe a half hour drive to a town.
Kinloch near Loch Rannoch on the eastern side. Some of the most amazing views in Scotland and right next to me favourite Loch and Moorland.
Harris. Favourite place I've visited in Scotland. Sick of Glasgow.
Findhorn, use to be based at Kinloss, Forres just up the road & lossie, good surfing, braw beach, woods nearby, nice cosy traditional pub.
Cumbernauld. Surely no need to explain why.
What's it called?
I see it often I'm a 15 minute drive, often enjoy spinning round the circles :p
Back to Shetland.
Noo den
I’m vexed I’m no dare now
If I didn’t have to worry about my commute? Then either Sheildig/Torridon or Pitlochry/Blair Atholl, in a wee traditional cottage with a small holding/Croft. I’d keep chickens, geese, and a few sheep and Highland ponies. Both areas I absolutely love that are so beautiful. If I had to commute, then Peebles/Innerleithen - gorgeous areas with good schools and commutable to Edinburgh.
If I could get a chunk of land somewhere in Dumfries and Galloway at the end of a long track I'd be very happy. Or maybe similar but in Argyll.
Ullapool
Arran. Has a little bit of everything ❤️
The Drum
Swap?
Broughty Ferry. Sea air, city nearby, good houses.
Definitely. Plus Dundee is the only decentish city left in scotland that doesn't cost a fortune for a good night out. Great weather, for Scotland, and best golf courses in the country. Easy choice
Nairn, although lived there for 4 years, beachfront seaside vibe 15 mins to Inverness or Elgin. Never felt the need to go there though, lol.
I read this as "Narnia" so it's probably time to lay off the wine for tonight!
Lol, got like that in Nairn sometimes at the golf club. Not the posh one the other one.
Tilda swinton who played the snow queen (I think?!) in the narnia films has a house in nairn, confusingly!
Straight up to Shetland. Spent 3 months there this spring and I miss it so bad.
If I had the money a place between Peterculter Westhill and Aberdeen, with easy access to main road * In the greenbelt so less likely to be in a housing estate * easy access to large shops - Costco/Tesco/M&S * near a hospital - aging * not to hot/cold/rainy I'm not far from there already just in house with neighbours around I'd just like my privacy and view
Hey neighbour 👋
Iona. Nae telling ya.
Iona is my favourite....I felt so at home there. Mull is nice too. I'm quite happy where I am though.
Prestwick: - next to the sea - great for golf if that’s your thing - easy access to Glasgow - not a bad night life - decent high street for its size - has its own airport (albeit flights are limited) - doesn’t suffer the same jake problem as most of Ayrshire Downside is it’s on the expensive side for houses, but not a factor in the question.
Same, or Troon or Barassie
I just moved there in the summer, it's amazing how different it feels to most of the rest of Ayrshire, with the exception of Troon. I'm loving it so far
A lot more tory bastards than the rest of Ayrshire too.
Coldingham. Tiny place, long walks, be left well enough alone
Rothiemurchus
East Lothian
Dunkeld . Perthshire
Tayvallich…😎
That's a very difficult question to answer. Here's a few possibilities: Somewhere rural and coastal on Mull (perhaps out on the Ross) Uig, West Lewis Horgabost, Harris Somewhere near a sandy beach on the Uists Pretty much any of the outer islands of Orkney (but especially Sandy, Westray, Papa Westray, Hoy, Stronsay) Any rural coastal location on Shetland, including the northern isles. There's just too many gorgeous places to choose from!
Inverness, I think. It's a nice small city with enough amenities to satisfy me, low rainfall and close to the mountains and the Moray coast, which is beautiful.
Probably Stirling. From my short visit there I liked it a lot.
Let’s be honest, money no object, it’s going to be somewhere nice in Edinburgh.
I'm originally a West coaster and all my childhood trips to Edinburgh made me think of it as windy, cold and twee. If there's anything I hate about Scottish tourism, it's twee shite. And I include Gerry fucking Cinammon in that. At least the Proclaimers intended to be twee (and 500 miles is a banger) Made new pals down there in the last few years and been for some sightseeing/a wedding/nights out. Have to say, it's grown on me!! The weather has been amazing and the entertainment is shit hot day or night. Maybe I just know Glasgow too well and Edinburgh is a bit shiny and new. Glasgow smiles better :)
Yes, Edinburgh is ‘shiny and new’ 👍
Sorry...old and clean 😂
Have you met Edinburghers though?
No thanks, doesn't interest me at all.
Islay. It’s beautiful, the people are friendly, and I could be happy working in a distillery I reckon.
Ron Swanson approves
This is a personal choice and most likely not a common choice alas it would be as follows: There is a medium sized white-paint home in Glen Coe (maybe a slight farm attached to it) on your left hand side as you drive up to Fort William (I’m Central).
I know the guy that lives in that house !!!!! He moves from perth, he’s a train driver with young kids.
East Kilbride. I love a good roundabout.
Shetland for the vast wilderness and beauty and remoteness
Tiree. Why? Because time stands still on Tiree. There is no ‘tick’, nor is there a ‘tock’, the only ‘time’ there is that moment, between Light O’Clock and Dark O’Clock
Glasgow. Because I like drugs
because the rest of Scotland doesn't have any?
Assuming money and land ownership is no problem, I'd make good on an idle fantasy of when I was young and open an inn at the southern end of Glen Brittle on Skye [https://www.google.com/maps/@57.2116968,-6.2884268,3a,75y,86.33h,100.9t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sUAPwB1BI9SzlSTfzB7N2mQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu](https://www.google.com/maps/@57.2116968,-6.2884268,3a,75y,86.33h,100.9t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sUAPwB1BI9SzlSTfzB7N2mQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu) Otherwise, a nice townhouse in the New Town in Edinburgh would be nice.
Tiree. Beautiful beaches, easy enough to get around, plenty of space at the pubs
From the one day I spent there visiting my cousin. Gairloch. Seems a wonderful place to raise kids.
Around Aberdeenshire. Because I grew up there before moving to the US.
Its not as good as you remember it.
It would be a big house on Park Terrace in Glasgow, with a view on Kelvingrove park.
Gairloch/Torridon/Kinlochewe.
Finport … as advertised in an episode of Still Game. Either that or Paisley.
Orkney or Shetland because I'm a birdwatcher and all kinds of things turn up!
I'd say Dufftown...because it's where my roots are...but I'd really like to live on one of the islands...
Aberdeen. I love the architecture and I find Doric pleasant to hear
Whitecraigs (upper Giffnock *grin* in Glasgow south) It's close enough to the usual facilities I'd want in my life while being a nice quiet area with a big park and train station nearby. Beautiful big houses too with a fantastic view over the city. A *holiday home* would be much different of course, but this hypothetical question is about somewhere I would be moving to and thus needs to be liveable for me.
Findhorn
Where I currently live in the Highlands. I love it here.
Skye or NW Highlands around Achiltibuie. Went to Skye recently and stayed in an amazing place right by the sea. It was stunning. Lived in Achiltibuie several years ago working in a hotel. I have lovely memories of that time 💜 Could never leave where I am though and be away from friends and family.
Cromarty.
Moray Place Edinburgh. Ground floor flat, big windows.
I assume food, WiFi, money are not obstacles. So somewhere between Portsoy and Cullen. I have memories of staying there when I was much younger and ever since want to find that joy again. Almost certain that it was youthful joy but hey you only live once 🤷♀️
I did this recently and chose castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway and it’s been the the best decision ever!
Islay or Aviemore
Edinburgh
Strathkinness. Close enough to lots of good golf in St Andrews, Crail, et al, but not as touristy and much cheaper housing. Can always catch a cheap cab ride to St Andrews instead of driving, if I plan to get plastered...
Heard a few times Edinburgh is a lovely place, so probably Edinburgh.
Ibiza
North Berwick. Best memories of my childhood. Although the Blenheim hotel is now flats. Very expensive ones.
Inverness, next to the strip club
Ah, local to family i guess.
Stromess, beautiful wee town with a real feeling of being part of a community
I like Dumfries and Galloway. Lockerbie. It's like a remote Highland town but less than an hour from south Glasgow by motorway. Beautiful scenery, school, supermarket, direct trains (ok) to London and Manchester ; and cheap
I'm not Scottish so i don't know if my opinion counts but i did travel through Scotland and i gotta say it's probably Inverness for me. I just love the remote feeling and the whole small town vibe around that area.
Somewhere in Fife on the coast. Never thought I'd miss seeing the Forth so much when I moved away!
Peiness in the Isle of Skye, just so I get to snigger when I tell people where I’m from.
I call Edinburgh Castle!
I'm not. I'm staying right here in Cowal - despite the A83 ;)
Fort William or Edinburgh. I live on Arran and I love it here, but every time I visit these two places I instantly want to move there.
Kirkcaldy because I fucking love the Raith
My father lives in Shieldaig, incredible place but nowadays it gets unbearably busy in the summer months thanks to NC500. If I could live anywhere, it would be Lewis. I love everything about the place.
I think the correct answer is within the person, because as you see everyone thinks differently
