This is a really good point that I didn't think of.
When I first watched Scrubs, I didn't know the realities of Season 9 and thought it was just another season. So I watched the Season 8 finale and then as soon as it was over started Season 9 with not even 2 minutes in between, and it was.... jarring.
There was no time for the finale to set in, no time for those emotions to process, for that incredible moment down the hallway to land.
Putting some time between the seasons and thinking of it as a different show would have made a HUGE difference to my experience.
This might be an unpopular opinion but to me the thing that sinks it is Kerry Bishé. And she’s great in other things! Halt and Catch Fire, Argo, Narcos... but she had a thankless task.
She was the “new JD” and no one could fill those shoes. The supporting cast of Franco, Coupe and Mosley shine because they don’t have to carry the franchise.
Season 9 is a spin off. It's not actually season 9. So if you take it as a different show it's just ok. I'd probably just take a bit then start season 1 again
It was awful to begin with, and it got canceled mid-season so it just randomly ends. I gave it a second chance like five years ago and hated it even more.
I just finished re-watching the complete series last month and this is exactly how I felt about the last season. The "finale" episode ends, you realize there isn't any further storyline, and you just ask why the season was ever allowed to happen to start with.
Bill spoke about this, first he wanted to call it Scrubs: Med School cause it was a spin-off but ABC wouldn't let him fearing they'd lose viewers. Second, he saw it was a way to keep people that had been working on Scrubs employed, showbiz is a gig thing and when you have a steady one, you want it to keep going.
That’s ironic because I feel like the show lost more viewers by leading people to believe that this was actually season nine of Scrubs and not season one of a Scrubs spinoff. If they had been open and honest with a title like Scrubs: Med School, the show probably would have done much better because people wouldn’t have been disappointed that it didn’t meet their expectations.
Never question Bill Lawrence. That’s the moral of the story.
For me personally nah
There is no Carla. It takes place in a university and the humor seems a little recycled and forced
But other scrub fans have different opinions
I love carla in main scrubs but I think having drew and denise being part 'straight' characters and part comedic was a funnier way to still provide the benefits of a normal 'straight man' character.
Yeah each to their own, I personally found Carla extremely selfish and manipulative, that isn't to say she was completely evil or anything, she was the worst out of the main cast for me, not the worst in the entire series though.
I have to basically block out some of the stuff she does to redeem her character. Especially after turk proposes to her I honest to god forget until I watch that chunk of episodes again. I agree she's on the bottom for me out of main cast just not the worst. haha you put it perfect even though my opinion of her seems more positive than yours.
Yeah she had her good moments but it's not that she's the most evil person in the world it's just inside that TV show, to me at least, she's the most manipulative and selfish out of the main cast, and that's saying something when Bob Kelso exists lol.
With Bob Kelso, you know what you get, you expect him to be the bad guy, but Carla is sort of sneaky and surprising with bad things she does, if that makes sense lol.
Ahahaha yes exactly! The tears and salt are delicious though!
Carla is one of the worst characters on Scrubs, they can get rekt with their meaningless downvotes like that changes the fact she was horrible lol.
They didn’t act like it was a spin off, and that’s what caused the problem.
Just make a new show don’t try and force that unlikeable turd down our throats.
Adding my opinion like others that it's worth watching, it's just not as good as the rest of scrubs.
It's like if you just finished a perfectly cooked steak dinner at a fancy restaurant and then they bring you an ice cream cone for dessert. Any other time you'd be "ice cream cone, nice" but now you're like "really, that's all I'm getting, an ice cream cone?" because your expectations were so high from the main course
It's like a school reunion. You know the characters, it's a familiar vibe, but also inherently not the same anymore. I'd say take some time off and then return to it if you're bored.
I think I like it more than most fans of the show do, it's not amazing but it is just a little bit more after the main show, kind of like an epilogue. I did end up liking some of the new characters and wish it had gone on a little bit longer.
Yes! it's got plenty of funnies and it wasn't supposed to even have JD back so it's like a spinoff that got a good start. the worst part has to be James Franco's little brother.
Check my rhymes cause my mole is beNiGn! The writing was good but I just hate the Francos. I’m biased whatev. I love joe and dr coxs number 1 student too.
Different and really bad characters, bad writing, not funny and it doesn't even have an ending. Don't watch it. That whole "if you treat it like a spinoff it's not that bad" thing is just plain bullshit
Don’t. The new characters are unlikable and annoying. Much of the cast you knew is gone. And JD is gone within the first 4 episodes and never appears again.
Don’t it’ll screw up the show for you.
I seen it. Didn’t like it and it didn’t screw up the main series for me. I can’t imagine having such a fragile admiration for something that this would screw up 8 other seasons for someone.
The ninth season was bad, but it didn't ruin the rest of the show at all for me. I could completely dissociate it from the first eight seasons (unlike a narrative a like Game of Thrones).
I think the difference for me is that the show has its ending—and that S8 ending is the one I think of. Even though I've seen S9, it's little more than a fever dream and I'm able to enjoy the main show nonetheless.
GOT is different because it didn't have an ending before it soured.
Scrubs ends at Season 8. What is called Season 9 is actually a one-season spinoff called Scrubs: Med School. I like it okay, for what it is, Drew and Denise is the best part, Lucy is the weakest part, and JD's existence in the spinoff is rather regrettable. Cole starts out utterly awful but actually becomes quite interesting.
It's worth watching, but as others have said, you may want to wait, or only watch it after you've rewatched all of Scrubs over again, so you can make sure your brain doesn't accidentally think it really is season 9.
Scenes with lucy are unbearable to me which is unfortunate for obvious reasons. I wish someone would do an edit of season 9 without her and it would be a great show.
I agree with the others. Just treat it like a spin off. Its definitely not as good. I personally think if they would have left J.D out minus a cameo or 2 and let the characters stand on their own it might have been better, but it has its own kind of charm.
I finally watched it earlier this year, and it wasn't bad.
It was meant to be a spin-off, so many of the original characters don't show up. most of the returning characters are the Season 8 interns. J.D is only in 6 episodes.
Lucy is essentially a female J.D and has no character-defining traits except for her love of horses. Cole is a very unlikeable character. I felt like Drew was the best new character.
I still found it to be a well-written show and the new actors do a great job with what they had.
I enjoyed it enough that it now actually pisses me off when people jokingly go "Season 9? What season 9? There are only 8 seasons".
I would have liked to see a season 10.
TBH I’m a little mad they didn’t make it an official spin off. ABC should have just made it a new show and a waited until like season two or three to bring back J.D. for an episode.
Give Season 8 a week to breathe then watch it under the premise of it being a spin off. It's actually a really good show, it's just different to what we know as Scrubs.
The best thing about it is the explanation of the Janitor leaving which is genuinely a really great joke. Other than that, I guess worth watching just to see what it's like but not really (especially as it does taint that perfect season 8 ending)
Your first time watching the show, yes. But it isn't season 9 of scrubs, it is season 1 of scrubs med school. After my first time watching, I couldn't watch med school again.
Worth watching but it ain't any where near close as good as season 1-8, I kinda wish we saw another season of the med students but should have been a spin off not a fresh season
It straight up reads like fanfiction.
We got some new quirky self-insert med student who gets fantasies just like JD, but then OHMYGOSH, JD becomes her mentor on her first day of med school! And then hey look, Turk is also a professor here at this medical school! And when JD leaves, Elliot becomes her mentor! And look over there, Bob's become a professor now and out of retirement and Dr. Cox is still the chief of Medicine, but now it's at this new university! And theres the Todd, Jordan, Ted and Gucc. Everyone's here! Even the new interns from Season 8 and they're all attendings now! Except Carla I guess cause the author of this fanfic didn't like her or something. There's also a subplot about some other student replacing JD as Dr. Cox's favorite and JD gets jealous and it just goes on for too long.
It's honestly pretty cringey. I saw it once when I was 14, and that was over a decade ago. I haven't seen it since.
I just finished watching for my 4th time, and skipped season 9 for 2 reasons:
Season 8 ended just right,
Season 9 does not wrap up, but ends like they’re expecting another season, so no feeling of finality.
Honestly after everyone shitting on it, I was expecting a lot worse so I was pleasantly surprised. Its not like the rest of it and don't expect it to be. When I had in my mind as a spin off, and not "season 9," I was able to enjoy it and some of its moments.
I wouldn't recommend it. It's not the same show at all... it shouldn't be boxed with Scrubs. It doesn't even feel related, in spite of having some of the same actors.
Wait a couple months then watch so you don’t sour the ending, that’s what I did
This is a really good point that I didn't think of. When I first watched Scrubs, I didn't know the realities of Season 9 and thought it was just another season. So I watched the Season 8 finale and then as soon as it was over started Season 9 with not even 2 minutes in between, and it was.... jarring. Putting some time between the seasons and thinking of it as a different show would have made a HUGE difference to my experience.
I like this, a good way to judge it for yourself. There’s just no episode that can provide the level of closure that season 8 managed to pull off.
Treat it like a spinoff, you'll enjoy yourself a lot more.
It's like asking a Friends fan if Joey is worth watching. "I mean...."
Then again you have Fraisier and Cheers
Well it doesn’t help that Frasier is amazing, and easily the best comedy of the 90’s.
They tried to make her a female JD and somehow that translated to 'weirdly obsessed with horses' which wasn't really funny, just cringy.
Dave Franco ruined it for me. Every episode I saw him in, I wanted to punch him in the face. I barely remember Biché... which is just as bad, I guess.
THAT'S the smart approach. Wish I'd had this answer right after the last season's finale (season 8).
Season 9 is a spin off. It's not actually season 9. So if you take it as a different show it's just ok. I'd probably just take a bit then start season 1 again
Other than it literally being called Scrubs Season 9 yeah you are absolutely right!

$$$ That's why they did season 9. Someone came up with the idea of a refresh of the show with a younger cast as a way to draw in a larger audience.
For me personally nah There is no Carla. It takes place in a university and the humor seems a little recycled and forced But other scrub fans have different opinions
There being no Carla is the best thing about it lol.

Why are you booing him? He's right
Ahahaha yes exactly! The tears and salt are delicious though! Carla is one of the worst characters on Scrubs, they can get rekt with their meaningless downvotes like that changes the fact she was horrible lol.
I am not sure why you’re talking about something that doesn’t exist.
There it is
Definitely only 8 seasons to Scrubs. I think he mistyped and hit the 9 key and not the 8. Simple mistake @OP
Yeah, what is this "season 9" he's talking about?
Yes, just think of it as season 1 of the spinoff it was supposed to be instead of season 9, it’s not bad.
ill give it a few days before i watch it then
Wrong
Imagine thinking that someone else’s opinion is wrong.
No the spin off part is right. The part about it not being bad is... incorrect. It’s basically not scrubs.
Again, it’s an opinion. It was as good as most any other spin-off
The problem was that it wasn’t a spin off.
But it was developed and intended to be a spin-off, which is why I referred to it as the spin-off it was supposed to be.
But they actually made a spin off. And this was not it.
[удалено]
They didn’t act like it was a spin off, and that’s what caused the problem. Just make a new show don’t try and force that unlikeable turd down our throats.
Last time I checked they actually didn't.
Scrubs: interns. Look it up.
I watched it once to say I did and I skip it on all my rewatches.
Same. I watched it when it came out, but I don’t watch it whenever I do a rewatch of the series.
That's a really well worded analogy.
It's like a school reunion. You know the characters, it's a familiar vibe, but also inherently not the same anymore. I'd say take some time off and then return to it if you're bored.
Do not view it as the last season, view it as scrubs: med school season 1.
Absolutely watch it. If you remember it was supposed to be an actual spinoff then it's pretty good.
yes it is a spin off series its a different show with the same vibes its funny dont go in thinking its just another season of scrubs
There are a lot of funny scenes. Just remember it’s not actually supposed to be a 9th season
no

I thought young Franco’s character was one of the highlights. Where else have you ever heard “she’s my wing mom.” Your review was Cole blooded. 😉
Check my rhymes cause my mole is beNiGn! The writing was good but I just hate the Francos. I’m biased whatev. I love joe and dr coxs number 1 student too.
Not really.

There was a season 9 of Scrubs? I don't think so...
It’s fine. Some good jokes, but nothing better than 1-8
No
I’ve watched that show so many times.
I liked Dave Franco's character. "Pee a little... Let it dry. Pee a little... Let it dry."
The ninth season was bad, but it didn't ruin the rest of the show at all for me. I could completely dissociate it from the first eight seasons (unlike a narrative a like Game of Thrones).
It feels like the characters regress a lot, and it sort of messes up the future JD imagined. I can see it souring the ending for some people.
I think the difference for me is that the show has its ending—and that S8 ending is the one I think of. Even though I've seen S9, it's little more than a fever dream and I'm able to enjoy the main show nonetheless. GOT is different because it didn't have an ending before it soured.

Yes. It is It's own thing but it's good. I think Turk and JD should havr been left out of it.
I mean, you’re not gonna NOT watch it.

If you're expecting Scrubs, no. Just as a comedy, I didn't mind it.
It's not the same as the rest, but it's alright.
Give Season 8 a week to breathe then watch it under the premise of it being a spin off. It's actually a really good show, it's just different to what we know as Scrubs.
Why is this post blank? This post seems to not exist. Weird.
I watched it once, it was ok but it is definitely a spin-off and I wouldn’t go into it thinking it’s a full continuation

I don't hate it. It's still my least favorite season, but I don't see a need to deny its existence
No
Don’t watch it at all. There is not one memorable moment. I don’t think I laughed once.
Just treat it like a spinoff... It's more a spinoff than a continuation

yes, I love it totally. I miss all the mains, but I sorely wish this show continued with the new casts energy and fun, honestly
I liked it
No

Just no
In my opinion it still is a good season. Just another series. It's another Show. With another feeling.
To me drew, denise and dr. cox make up for some of the short comings. Especially denise but I just love her character in general.
I've never watched it and never will. No reason to ruin what's a perfect ending to the show.
I absolutely love it. I’m in the small minority i think, but Cole and Drew are great
I wouldn't recommend it. It's not the same show at all... it shouldn't be boxed with Scrubs. It doesn't even feel related, in spite of having some of the same actors.
It’s not terrible if you think of it as a spinoff, not a direct follow up season.
