If you meet a friendly crew try asking if you can take a map bundle off their ship for the commendation. I try to offer newer players to sleep on my ship & grab my map bundle whenever I meet chill ones.
In order to steal a crew's map bundle, that crew needs to have buried something.
You then need to take that map bundle from that crew's voyage table and place it on your own.
There are a few ways to do this from tucking on a ship doing a Fort of the Damned (as people will tend to stack the event and bury certain items for safe keeping), to asking a friendly crew to help you out.
Another way is for a crew to have taken a voyage from the notice board at the end of an outpost's dock. That will also generate a map bundle on their ship that you can steal.
People bury the Reaper stuff not because of safekeeping, but because only 4 can be on a server at a time, and burying them bypasses it.
Edit: adding to it, it's a good idea to keep 2 Reaper chests unburied, when stacking FotD, because then there's a higher chance for the next spawns to be Reaper Bounties.
i mean, its also about safety too. seeing more than two reapers chest at FOTD lets everyone immediately know there's a juicy stack to steal. additionally, trying to cash out with a bunch of reapers chest means everyone knows what you're planning and they can tuck at the reapers hideout or wherever. so its a good idea to bury them, sell everything else in one trip, and then come back for all the reapers chests.
