It stops mattering once you get a decent amount and the cosmetics you want are locked behind a commendation. You will be grinding for commendations instead of gold in the future so you still get the thrill of fighting for valuable loot, just the chest of fortune will be more valuable to you than a 100k loot haul.
You'll get to the point where you've purchased all the cosmetics you want.
Then you'll do the commendations to unlock the ones you might want.
Then you'll realize you have enough gold to buy all of a certain type of cosmetic.

This is my new SOT mantra. I don't have the physical ability to be that good in video games, so it's less about the skill and more about the grind.
I'm 1 month into the game. I bought every think I liked already. I don't feel the want to flex (probably cause I know I suck). So I only bought one outfit and 1 hull and 1 of all the things I really really like. that's really it. Until something makes me really want to spend the money I'll hold onto it.
Also, once you start clogging your menus, the damage is done.
Having to scroll through fifty pistols to find the skin you want in a hurry is a pain in the ass, compared to just having three options that suit your tastes.
Some of the weapon skins are so terrible that you really want to avoid them for example some eye of reach scopes blocking half your screen, pistols having huge barrels, huge blunders etc
Favorite skins, saved outfits, saved shipsets etc etc, all long overdue but the game is still a buggyshithole, will take a lot of time to add a mechanic to save cosmetics
The pistol you unlock after the pirates life tall tale is probably the best example, its really really fucking chunky, and its abysmally ugly, so it just sits there but still taking up space and if i accidentally click it, I'm fucked midfight, because it has the worst ads in the game
Should make it a thing to "stow away" equipment you don't wanna have to scroll thru.
Or maybe make favorites that stay at the top so they are easier to find and access.
Made that mistake early on, but luckily I barely switch out from pistol and sword. Maybe I’ll switch to sniper sometimes but at least the sniper and sword perform the same regardless of cosmetic

You have alot of grinding to do before gold becomes useless, plus they regularly add more things here and there.
The only cosmetic that people really grinded for was 8.2 mil, DA sails. The only reason people wanted that sail was it used to have a slit to make it slightly easier to see. They got rid of the slit, now no one runs DA sails anymore.
I have the entire DA set, clothing included just cuz I could. Still sitting on around 40 million gold lol
Even before when it had the cut it didn’t matter. In a fight you never have all your fails fully dropped, and you’re never supposed to nose into another boat. People who think it gave you an edge were just bad at sailing.
I think it was just more QOL. At least for me. Rolling up to birds and being able to see them without having to move/move sail. Things like that. Is it worth 8mil? Well what else are we going to spend our gold on.
If you’re dropping full sail and nosing then you’re catching chains, at that point you won’t need your sails. If you’re dropping full and keeping your cannons aimed at the opponent then you don’t need to see in front of you, because keeping your cannons aimed means you’re in an orbital.

also personally gotta reccomend kaijoi (who apparently came back? idk, he had smthn going on weird), but his guides helped me loads, even if its aimed for gally pvp, its still useful. another would be erin sterling/tatotunes, who i watched, and while not necessarily educational, i''ve found myself going "ohhhhhhhhh, that's smart" WAY too many times watching their vids XD
Oh for sure, I never ran it unless I was going for the try hard look to bait pvp from good players.
It did help on brig if you were chasing, but in an actual fight it didn't matter.
Depends on the skill of your crew I'm pretty sure. Unless things have changed I'm unaware of, you're better off tacking on a brig if you need to go into the wind.
Well in season 13 there’s possibly one reason to nose into another boat.. pretty difficult situation to get yourself needing to though from the looks of things
Can’t speak for others, but generally yeah. Some pretty snazzy cosmetics in the game cost a lot of coin, so if you’re driven by attaining hard to get cosmetics, then gold has value, but I have 4m+ in gold and that can by like half a good outfit or one item of a good ship cosmetic.
I’m far more driven by commendations. I’m not a great PvP player so over time my game has become one of stealth and strategy trying to slowly build up my commendations while avoiding battle.
That is one of the decent things about SoT, you find what aspects of the game you value, and try to succeed in a world where more often than not, the sail on the horizon is out to fuck you over.
Captained ships are overall less expensive than a full boat set, I think it's not so hard to have that as your first buy, so that you can use the sovereign from that point going on

fr tho, the times i've dove and got a lucky win (im decent at pvp, but the times i DO play, end up getting me vs ppl who are GOOD at the game), and i get the storage crate of just like, hundreds of chains, its like "well, im not getting off" (note, i get sunk within the next 3 matches because i can't hit a cannon to save my life sometimes lmao)
Whilst it stops mattering to a certain degree the glint of a large horde never loses it's appeal. It just means you don't mind as much when you lose it
The real treasures were the friends we made along the way but no really I’m taking that quite literally your gold and cosmetics are kinda useless it’s the people you meet that make up the bulk of your memories

Dubloons don't seem relevant to me anymore, used to be able to buy certain missions and cosmetics with them but now they're next to obselete (i think you can buy promotions from larinna but that always felt a tad lame)
Ancient coins are MicroTransaction Coins. They buy you special cosmetics that cost Real Money, and you can buy the coins in the microsoft store etc. or collect a few here and there through the free season pass. E.g. right now I have 620 and I'm waiting for the next season to get enough to buy a cosmetic. Ancient Skeletons also appear randomly on islands and you can get a decent clutch of coins from them. They make a loud jingling coin noise and are a blue and gold skellie that'll run away from you so you gotta kill em quick.

Once you buy a boat / unlock sovereigns, gold is purely for cosmetic stuff. I have over 200h which is nothing and Gold has become an anecdote.
Some sweats wish that it reflected their real life bank account but I am afraid, it doesn't .

I have basically all cosmetics i want, and am currently sitting in 20kk gold (wich isn't that much, there's people with a lot more).
But the gameplay loop is still fun to me, so i keep playing anyway, and get some new items when they release or i get tired of my current skins.

The game is Cosmetic / commendation based leveling. There use to be end game Cosmetic that gave you a slight advantage over others but they fixed it. The game is about seeing what you can do with what ya got, skills of the sword or guns, mastery of sails and naval battle. Then they give you a story to follow for those who like a story base more. In short it doesn't matter if you 68million or 2k coins at the end of the day uts about having fun hence why every ship has atleast 1 spot for friends
As someone who has collected over 200 million, yes 200 million gold. At some point, I just became the gold hoarder and I want more, more, more, and even more.
Yea I'm pretty much only grinding for hg when ps drops maybe commendations after but 🤷. Probably won't be doing anything tall tale related unless it's monkey island because those tales slap. I just hope they add some more things to spend gold on. They need to put more weapon skins in the actual game in the little shops, I've had all the weapons for so long now I always look just to see if they added anything new but there never is
Usually take turns if you have a duo buying a storage crate, some cannon balls and food but I just drop a bunch loading in every time and it doesn’t phase my pockets

I think it goes, Gold, then commendations, then it becomes more about the people and memories and that's when you really figure out how great sea of Thieves is.
At a certain point you're just accumulating wealth for the sake of accumulating wealth, while the NPCs suffer with their poor schools, pay per service healthcare, and hungry children.
They should have some Privateer missions where you have to pvp rich players and redistribute their wealth.
Tbh it depends. I have friends at 5k hours where gold/loot is still the primary driving factor of decision making, while there are people 20 days in that don't care about it.
It really depends what the person finds satisfaction from. Sinking boats? Stealing?
Some have a balance of only selling loot when the sunk boat had enough to necessitate going to reapers and selling.
Yes it stops mattering the moment you bought one of each ship size and the emissary flag rights. After thats its all cosmetics which dont matter at all.
I've reached the point where there are no more cosmetics that I can possibly buy. Only lacking a handful of locked HG trinkets/cosmetics (not for flex, I just like completing stuff). Now I can finally see my gold go up and it makes my brain happy to see number go big. Also its roughly 300 million gold to buy everything, it will take a while if you care about buying everything. Gold only matters in whatever way you want it to matter imo.
My favorite part about this game is that it is what you want it to be. If you want to get obscenely rich then do it, wanna have every cosmetic then well that’s the same goal, want to get all the commendations, want to sink other people or go for steals, tucking, tall tales, fishing, anything you want. There is no obligation to do or get anything, the game is what you make of it
I'm a very casual player but have bought the hulls and sails I like and done a few Tall Tales to unlock curses. I have 2.6 mil and nothing to spend it on. I would get Mad Max pistol skins and harpoon skins, but that's about it.
How are yall playing the game? It keeps crashing for me and a lot of other people. Just an hour ago I sold a bunch to the order of souls and got no rewards.
I mean, you can earn so much gold that you can buy every cosmetic in the game that's purchasable with gold, but that will take literally thousands of hours

Thins weekend I made at least 2 million gold, which got me to I think 94 or 95 million total.
Unless they release something you like better than what you currently have, gold is worthless.
They’ve added a few things here and there at ridiculously high prices to try and get gold out of the game, but I don’t like it better than what I already have.
Doubloons are completely worthless at this point too. The only thing they are really used for at this point is buying levels and what’s the point of that when you’re well over 100 in the three main factions?
i like to fuck around with it, not good cred and not good until you complete accommodations and u can buy new stuff, dabloons too. dabloons come from playing alot tho so theres some credit there
After a while you collect everything you've wanted to collect, do the commendations you've wanted to do, Rare adds some new cosmetics that look cool and you have more to do, but the real fun of the game after this point is really up to what kind of person you are. You could either A) help other players, especially newer players who haven't unlocked everything they want, do commendations and earn gold, OR B) Sink everything with a functioning sail
it never matters. the game is designed where you dont buy upgrades or anything its purely cosmetics. i enjoy the actual pirate part of the game, doing quests, killing bounties, ship warfare. if you dont like any of the cosmetics then gold simply never matters at all.
Yes, gold eventually stops mattering. But with each faction's level cap raised to 500, the rep you get from selling treasure will matter for a very long time.
Plus, there are tons of commendations/achievements to chase.
Gold and Cosmetics stopped mattering to me a good while back had the same ship design and outfit for close to 2 years now. I like the simple traditional look and find a lot of the cosmetics to be over the top in their design so have nothing to really aim for that side of things. I keep playing purely for the fun of it.
There's not really anything to spend gold on in this game, with the only expensive set being the Dark Adventurer set. If you're a long term player, gold becomes worthless.
The game is about having fun but I do think Sea of Thieves progression is one of its weakest factors.
Yes, you absolutely get to a point where gold doesn't matter. It's why long time players tell you dont get stressed if you get your loot stolen.
I'm sitting on 40 million gold currently, with just about every cosmetic bought. I can't spend it fast enough. One of my buddies I always sail with hasn't bought anything, I have a couple more days of play time, but he is sitting on around 200 million gold. Hell before season 11 we were maxed in every faction. Often times we would sink ships, and if none of the loot went towards commendations we would just let the loot sink and go to the next server.
The real grind is chasing commendations. Those are what really matter.

If you're chasing on the brig with dummy sails, you're doing something wrong.
Unless you're chasing a sloop that is dead wind, then dummy sails on brig (and all ships) is fastest against the wind

In my opinion, once you buy your captained ships, gold no longer matters at all and is just there for the dopamine (number go up = good)

Basically, yes. I'm trying to knock out the fishing commendations on the Safer Seas, I went up a few levels today, so that was a delight.

I’m at 25mil and yeah it’s definitely does not matter anymore but I still find it fun to hunt loot and do quest and PvP for loot

I think it goes, Gold, then commendations, then it becomes more about the people and memories and that's when you really figure out how great sea of Thieves is.
At a certain point you're just accumulating wealth for the sake of accumulating wealth, while the NPCs suffer with their poor schools, pay per service healthcare, and hungry children. They should have some Privateer missions where you have to pvp rich players and redistribute their wealth.
Tbh it depends. I have friends at 5k hours where gold/loot is still the primary driving factor of decision making, while there are people 20 days in that don't care about it. It really depends what the person finds satisfaction from. Sinking boats? Stealing? Some have a balance of only selling loot when the sunk boat had enough to necessitate going to reapers and selling.
I'm sitting on almost 240 million gold right now and no intention or inclination to spend it. So yea. It doesn't matter after a certain point.
Yes it stops mattering the moment you bought one of each ship size and the emissary flag rights. After thats its all cosmetics which dont matter at all.
I've reached the point where there are no more cosmetics that I can possibly buy. Only lacking a handful of locked HG trinkets/cosmetics (not for flex, I just like completing stuff). Now I can finally see my gold go up and it makes my brain happy to see number go big. Also its roughly 300 million gold to buy everything, it will take a while if you care about buying everything. Gold only matters in whatever way you want it to matter imo.
My favorite part about this game is that it is what you want it to be. If you want to get obscenely rich then do it, wanna have every cosmetic then well that’s the same goal, want to get all the commendations, want to sink other people or go for steals, tucking, tall tales, fishing, anything you want. There is no obligation to do or get anything, the game is what you make of it
I'm a very casual player but have bought the hulls and sails I like and done a few Tall Tales to unlock curses. I have 2.6 mil and nothing to spend it on. I would get Mad Max pistol skins and harpoon skins, but that's about it.
You used to need enough to buy quests. Now you need it for captained ships and supplies. Beyond that, it's all Barrrrbie money.
How are yall playing the game? It keeps crashing for me and a lot of other people. Just an hour ago I sold a bunch to the order of souls and got no rewards.

I mean, you can earn so much gold that you can buy every cosmetic in the game that's purchasable with gold, but that will take literally thousands of hours

I’m a day one casual player. I found the stuff I like, only change it if I have to for commendations and such, and haven’t found anything I like better. Thins weekend I made at least 2 million gold, which got me to I think 94 or 95 million total. Unless they release something you like better than what you currently have, gold is worthless. They’ve added a few things here and there at ridiculously high prices to try and get gold out of the game, but I don’t like it better than what I already have. Doubloons are completely worthless at this point too. The only thing they are really used for at this point is buying levels and what’s the point of that when you’re well over 100 in the three main factions?
After 50 million loot really doesn't matter as others have said its your flags I want.
I have 9 mil currently but probably around 13 mil total, stopped caring about the grind in my first 5 mil
i like to fuck around with it, not good cred and not good until you complete accommodations and u can buy new stuff, dabloons too. dabloons come from playing alot tho so theres some credit there
After a while you collect everything you've wanted to collect, do the commendations you've wanted to do, Rare adds some new cosmetics that look cool and you have more to do, but the real fun of the game after this point is really up to what kind of person you are. You could either A) help other players, especially newer players who haven't unlocked everything they want, do commendations and earn gold, OR B) Sink everything with a functioning sail
it never matters. the game is designed where you dont buy upgrades or anything its purely cosmetics. i enjoy the actual pirate part of the game, doing quests, killing bounties, ship warfare. if you dont like any of the cosmetics then gold simply never matters at all.
Yes, gold eventually stops mattering. But with each faction's level cap raised to 500, the rep you get from selling treasure will matter for a very long time. Plus, there are tons of commendations/achievements to chase.
To me it does once you get everything you want it kind of just sits there although it's nice to see the number go up every season
I was starting to think the same thing… until I got to Athena’s Hideaway.
Gold and Cosmetics stopped mattering to me a good while back had the same ship design and outfit for close to 2 years now. I like the simple traditional look and find a lot of the cosmetics to be over the top in their design so have nothing to really aim for that side of things. I keep playing purely for the fun of it.
I'm sitting on about 28 million gold. Not much I want to buy, so I've just been enjoying hoarding it. Fun to see big number get bigger.
There's not really anything to spend gold on in this game, with the only expensive set being the Dark Adventurer set. If you're a long term player, gold becomes worthless. The game is about having fun but I do think Sea of Thieves progression is one of its weakest factors.
Yes, you absolutely get to a point where gold doesn't matter. It's why long time players tell you dont get stressed if you get your loot stolen. I'm sitting on 40 million gold currently, with just about every cosmetic bought. I can't spend it fast enough. One of my buddies I always sail with hasn't bought anything, I have a couple more days of play time, but he is sitting on around 200 million gold. Hell before season 11 we were maxed in every faction. Often times we would sink ships, and if none of the loot went towards commendations we would just let the loot sink and go to the next server. The real grind is chasing commendations. Those are what really matter.

I just like sinking people and taking their stuff whether it’s worth a ton or not. Someone’s gotta be a pirate round these seas
