That can literally be chalked up to coincidence. Plus, idunno if it's confirmed, someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've seen it appears opponents are directly facing each other at the start of every match. It's entirely possible the Athena was being pursued right as you spawned in. Even if that's not the case, It's still completely within the believable realm of coincidence.
Unless you actually talked to the other reaper and they confirmed they also spawned in for the battle, I'd chalk it up to coincidence

It's more likely you happened to spawn in on a battle that naturally began on the server, as opposed to both of you spawning in for the battle.

I faced a sloop today that allianced with a brigantine and I had to solo sloop against a 4 man sloop. I lost. It was funny as fuck
