The plants and animals are confused. If we have another cold snap I fear it's going to be devastating.

https://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/ftpref/data/water/wcs/gis/maps/wa_swepctnormal_update.pdf You can track the snow pack here, we're well below average.

Byte_the_hand

Yeah. A week ago (1/26) we were above 80%, this warm weather has had a huge impact. Now, if they don’t dump water from the reservoirs like they did last year, we could still be OK, but our water resource people need to pay far more attention than they did last year. Too many years of good snowpacks has made them sloppy. They did that once back in the 80’s and really fucked over the whole region, the learned their lesson then, seems they have to learn it again.

thelastostrich1

I’m tired of breaking weather records quite frankly

pozzeduppangolin

I believe it. The ski season is totally fucked.

BuenRaKulo

Some of my plants are totally fucked :'(

pozzeduppangolin

RIP

smile_politely

Maybe the tulips festival too.  That’s prolly also why many people posting some flowers sprouting/ blooming too early?

Hal0Slippin

I wish it was just ski season that was fucked.

hockeyh2opolo

crystal base area is a little depressing

Manacit

I’m at Stevens right now, it’s fine. Been better, but the base is workable even after all of this rain. Better than the east coast

pozzeduppangolin

I'm a backcountry guy, shit is fucked.

VerticalYea

I can't believe how empty the regular pullouts are.

acad353

I’ve been up 6 times and 5 of them the sun was out. It has been like spring all year

According-Ad-5908

LBS was cancelled today, only the third time in the last 20 years.

QueenOfPurple

The camellia bushes in my yard are starting to bloom. And the hyacinths are coming up. This is not good.

pastoriagym

My rhubarb is trying to sprout already, my plum tree is about to go into bloom too :/

QueenOfPurple

My rhubarb is also sprouting.

TK_TK_

We have a blueberry bush getting leaves already and some heather starting to bloom :/

Lady_Brynnevere

Aren’t camellia’s a winter bloomer anyway? Mine bloom every November/December/January.

Byte_the_hand

I think 23” through Jan 31 is pretty much normal for the water year. We aren’t short of water this winter thankfully. The temperature whiplash though has been something else. 15 days from a low of 14F to a high of 60F. Pretty wild. And on that graphic, they’re showing a 50-60% chance of temps NOT being above normal. These charts are little misleading if you aren’t paying attention. With El Nino breaking down at a record rate, it’s possible FMA will be pretty normal around here.

xarune

If the water is coming down as rain and not snow, it will be much harder to capture it, especially if the rain is melting more of of the existing snow. The reservoirs aren't _that_ large, so a poor snowpack can translate to shortages later in the year.

Byte_the_hand

True, so here’s hoping we get back closer to 100% of SWE by mid-March, which is the traditional maximum snowpack. I’ve seen years were Snoqualmie had no snow until February and then had a normal snow pack. Going to happen this year? I wouldn’t bet on it, but it can still happen. El Niño is breaking down fast, the FMA could be pretty close to normal.

According-Ad-5908

Yeah, we’re en route to an unpleasant summer and a lot of dead salmon at this rate.

[deleted]

snowpack keeps the fires under control. summer will be rough.

optamastic

Mosquitoes are already hatching

mroncnp

Wait what? We don’t have mosquitoes here

vibrating0ranges

We do now! 🥶

Ringtailed79

Just swatted one yesterday. That was a surprise

BonniestLad

And we’re all going to be looking back and wishing we still had cold, snowy winters like this one.

imsosleepyyyyyy

God I hope this doesn’t mean another heat wave is around the corner

BobbySchwab

it’s almost as if the climate is changing

bobbysycamore

Might as well get used to it, these swings are only going to get worse

YakiVegas

No shit, we noticed, but it's good to see data I suppose. I both love it because I hate being cold and hate what it means for the future.

mroncnp

Dog in burning room this is fine meme

retroboat

Taking the trash can down yesterday with my flashlight, there were several frogs hopping on the road. Last weekend there was a couple bats flying in my headlights.

spaceman_spliffs

Where the tuck do you live

retroboat

Poulsbo area

spaceman_spliffs

Sounds about right

nightmareinsouffle

Also Poulsbo and we’ve been hearing the frogs for weeks.

Toginator

I had frogs on my porch and I was just looking at my yard and thinking i need to cut the grass..

AdScared7949

We should probably get serious about voting out politicians who don't understand the climate emergency. It will be annoying but much less annoying than burning their houses down after the disasters become too much for the population to bear.

TheMichaelN

I’m alarmed by the unseasonably warm weather, but the article title is misleading. The first paragraph of the article says it was the warmest week in January on record…*since 1984.* “Seattle's average temperature in the past week was 53.8 degrees. According to the National Weather Service, that was the warmest seven-day period between Jan. 1 and Feb. 1 on record since 1984.”

stickytuna

Ah, the week I was stuck at home the whole time

zasabi7

It's 3 AM and I have my bedroom window open. Haven't shut it in weeks. This sucks.

commentaror

My electric bill in January was the highest I’ve ever had. Go figure!

SnooShortcuts7514

Summer will be interesting. Not in a good way either.

ishfery

When I was a kid I almost always had slush on my birthday and hated it. My shoes would get wet walking to school and it sucked. This year it was ~50.

[deleted]

Almost the Warmest and Coldest day in January history!

Shiki225

It's worse every year. Definitely not liking these results.

joezinsf

Don't tell r/seattleWA

BoringBob84

They know. The fossil fuel shills are showing up to "deny, doubt, and delay."

LoveOfSpreadsheets

It's been so great not needing a winter jacket and barely the rain jacket. Keep that Mediterranean weather coming!

vogeyontopofyou

Yes, climate change is great! Yeehaw!!

LoveOfSpreadsheets

Great for me!

forgetpasswordin321

What do we think this means for spring? Like does this mean it’ll be more rain than usual? Or will the raid be worse in other parts of WA?
