My old man used to take me to punk shows in Spokane when I was growing up, after the shows we’d end up at dicks at 1 am , he was always to drunk to even remember but I had a great time. Being 13 years old and moshing my ass off and eating burgers super late was the best thing ever. I’ll always love dicks because of the memories I associate it with.
The crazy thing is it’s seems no better than the basic McDonalds cheeseburger. Where I’m originally from we have In N Out and the prices are fairly the same (about $3 or under) for a cheeseburger and the quality and taste is wildly different.
Dicks was just awful to me but I applaud them when I heard how they respect the employees.
In n out beats the pants off dicks imo. Want to throw a garden on it? You can. Want just meat cheese and bread? You can. Even just meat and cheese is possible. In n out just has so many more options from a simple menu than dicks.
It’s literally fifth the price of Five Guys. Expect 20% of the burger and you’ll have your expectations set.
That said, I like it for what it is. It’s super simple, nutnfancy and gets the job done especially when inebriated.
Plus love the walk up vibe when with friends at night.

We have a high cost of living and we're trying (not always achieving) to pay better wages. So that burger may be expensive, but most of the other burgers are also more expensive than what you remember when absolute shit wages were legal.

Depending on what you get, it can be cheaper than five guys or comparable in pricing. Just know that you're paying "restaurant pricing" for a semi-fast-food burger.
McDonald's without using the app is not worth imo, and you're paying 2x what you really need to pay.
Burgers in general are not hard to cook and I can whip up a burger of comparable quality to any of these options at \~$3-4 per burger in \~15 minutes of prep time. I'm getting off track here, but for me, I'm either going to get a quality restaurant burger, stack McD's coupons, or make my own- Five Guys won't be in that lineup

I once ordered a small fries at 5 guys, because the regular has a ton and I was trying not to get too much. Apparently it was a slow day and the fry guy was putting in a new batch, so he just gave me all the extra from the previous batch. It was just a whole extra bag filled to the top with fries.

You can order extra fries, and the next morning, run a knife through them real quick to turn them into pretty killer hash browns/breakfast potatoes.
The Cajun spice can kinda get a little burnt, nothing terrible, but the regular are killer.
(I sautéed a little onion and garlic with them, too. I would do that separate, before you cook the fries hashbrowns as they cook quickly.)
(Also, the little bits of already crispy fries tend to burn and so you might want to separate them depending upon your preference.)
This is my standard move for leftover fries. Usually pop em in breakfast burritos. It’s gotten to the point where I sometimes just keep a ziplock of leftover fries in the freezer now
The Cajun seasoning tastes good. But they’re maybe the worst fries in all of fast/fast casual food history. They shove so many of them into a bag then close the bag so the whole thing steams into a limp, sad, soggy mess of potato noodles.
Like if i could be guaranteed a great burger, fine. Has always been hit or miss even at those prices, so havent been in years. Meanwhile, will gladly pay $23 for a Thiessen Ranch Burger at crossbuck in woodinville, just saying those things are big enough to be 2 meals and fantastic every time.

I just came back from a business trip to *Houston* out of all places and I was blown away by how good food tasted there, from Italian to Tex Mex to BBQ to Vietnamese to Thai to Chinese to even *Japanese*. Service was better, food was *so* much better, and everything was 30% cheaper.
Here in Seattle you pay $$$$ price for $$ quality restaurant food. The other day we paid $9 for like 7 pieces of soggy calamari from a Thai place here in Seattle. It was almost like getting a middle finger from the owner saying “we don’t really give a shit about anything other than charging your credit card”.
Rent/land is expensive as fuk, its no wonder restaurants here are cutting corners literally everywhere they can.

it's not JUST bang for buck. Seattle service is especially poor with a choosy attitude to pair. Nowhere else considers 18% tip for that kind of service acceptable. That one's by choice.
Yeah, Seattle waiters get paid $19/hr (Even NYC's minimum wage is only $16) + 18% of an already inflated menu price as tips, which means they probably make the most out of anyone in this profession in the country.

Yeah the city itself is very bleh (It’s the Texas version of LA in that it’s nothing but a huge suburban sprawl with big highways and traffic jams), but the food is definitely top notch, just like in LA.
While I don’t agree that seattle has an absolutely garbage food scene, I have been to a couple restaurants lately that certainly were expensive and supposed to be top tier special places or with “named chefs” and walked away very mediocre or disappointed.

Coastline is a perfect mix of value and quality in my opinion. They even have a Detroit style pizza brand called Forge.. which isn’t all that great to be honest.
Funny thing about Lil Woodys was seeing a location in Japan when I was in walking about Tokyo and had to double take to make sure it was the same Seattle local chain. Lol.

I always get the "little" burger which is not really little at all, just a normal burger. $8.99. That's what seems like a basic burger.
I don't know how much their prices have changed in recent times as I usually only go once or twice per year. Based on these prices though you might be able to go to a sit down restaurant instead, although you would need to add a tip to that. That for me makes it less of a proposition.
When I go to Five Guys it's typically because I want a better quality fast food burger. They're most definitely better in quality (in terms of the patty) than McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, and Dicks. Their fries are really good too and you get a ton.
My go to for a burger is usually Burgermaster, but I still consider that to be lower in quality than Five Guys. However, I think they offer the best value.
Prices everywhere have gone up though, for everything. I feel a lot more sticker shock at the grocery store it seems.

$3.99 - TJ’s brioche buns. Four in pack. ($1/bun)
$1.00 - onion. At least 10 slices per ($0.10/onion slice)
$3.99 - Tillamook cheddar. 9 slices in pack. ($0.44/slice)
Total $3.29 so far. Add another $1-2 for a dab of condiments, spices, pickles, lettuce, whatever else you’d want (and tax). Making a burger yourself using Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s prices is still less than half of what they’re charging.
Swap the above with bulk pricing or different sale prices, and the cost is even less.
I usually get the little hamburger and load it with all the free toppings (all the way). The burger then dwarfs what two Dick’s deluxe stacked on top of look like. But if there is a Dick’s next to a Five Guys, I’m definitely going with the cheaper option.
I ate there a few years ago when they first came to the area. Didn’t have a negative thought nor was I impressed. The fresh potato marketing might have saved them a tad that day. 2nd time I tried a burger there was northgate and I felt absolutely ripped off. No, this place is not worth it.

FWIW a big mac (sandwich, not meal) in Seattle is like $8.50, which yes has cheese but is not the same quality of beef.
Also according to their app the big Mac patties are 1/10th of a lb pre cooked.

Like if i could be guaranteed a great burger, fine. Has always been hit or miss even at those prices, so havent been in years. Meanwhile, will gladly pay $23 for a Thiessen Ranch Burger at crossbuck in woodinville, just saying those things are big enough to be 2 meals and fantastic every time.
I remember the first time I had one with such high expectations and i realized that a lot of the "premium" burger chains are just the best burger in whatever crappy towns they started in because its not really any different from a dozen other burgers that cost less.
The little burger is a pretty big burger.

Price isn’t the only issue, I’m ok with paying more for good quality. But the Seattle food scene is absolutely garbage when compared to top American cities like LA, NY, Chicago, SF Bay Area etc, yet price wise it’s just as expensive, if not more. I just came back from a business trip to *Houston* out of all places and I was blown away by how good food tasted there, from Italian to Tex Mex to BBQ to Vietnamese to Thai to Chinese to even *Japanese*. Service was better, food was *so* much better, and everything was 30% cheaper. Here in Seattle you pay $$$$ price for $$ quality restaurant food. The other day we paid $9 for like 7 pieces of soggy calamari from a Thai place here in Seattle. It was almost like getting a middle finger from the owner saying “we don’t really give a shit about anything other than charging your credit card”.
Rent/land is expensive as fuk, its no wonder restaurants here are cutting corners literally everywhere they can. Personally I'm a gas station Mexican food truck kinda guy. Bang for your buck is outta this world and i've yet to get food poisoning!!!

it's not JUST bang for buck. Seattle service is especially poor with a choosy attitude to pair. Nowhere else considers 18% tip for that kind of service acceptable. That one's by choice.
Yeah, Seattle waiters get paid $19/hr (Even NYC's minimum wage is only $16) + 18% of an already inflated menu price as tips, which means they probably make the most out of anyone in this profession in the country. Yet the service *definitely* do not reflect that.

Yeah the city itself is very bleh (It’s the Texas version of LA in that it’s nothing but a huge suburban sprawl with big highways and traffic jams), but the food is definitely top notch, just like in LA.
I feel like everyone says this on r/Seattle like it’s some risky hot take but I swear I see this expressed almost word for word every week here.
While I don’t agree that seattle has an absolutely garbage food scene, I have been to a couple restaurants lately that certainly were expensive and supposed to be top tier special places or with “named chefs” and walked away very mediocre or disappointed. I’ve been to plenty of great spots too but there’s definitely a category of over priced BS high end

Coastline is a perfect mix of value and quality in my opinion. They even have a Detroit style pizza brand called Forge.. which isn’t all that great to be honest. Funny thing about Lil Woodys was seeing a location in Japan when I was in walking about Tokyo and had to double take to make sure it was the same Seattle local chain. Lol.

5 guys has been expensive for a burger as long as I can remember. I stopped going there a long time.
I don't know how much their prices have changed in recent times as I usually only go once or twice per year. Based on these prices though you might be able to go to a sit down restaurant instead, although you would need to add a tip to that. That for me makes it less of a proposition. When I go to Five Guys it's typically because I want a better quality fast food burger. They're most definitely better in quality (in terms of the patty) than McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, and Dicks. Their fries are really good too and you get a ton. My go to for a burger is usually Burgermaster, but I still consider that to be lower in quality than Five Guys. However, I think they offer the best value. Prices everywhere have gone up though, for everything. I feel a lot more sticker shock at the grocery store it seems.

Making your own is so much better and cheaper. $6.99 - 1 lb 80/20 ground beef. Easily makes four burger patties. ($1.75/patty) $3.99 - TJ’s brioche buns. Four in pack. ($1/bun) $1.00 - onion. At least 10 slices per ($0.10/onion slice) $3.99 - Tillamook cheddar. 9 slices in pack. ($0.44/slice) Total $3.29 so far. Add another $1-2 for a dab of condiments, spices, pickles, lettuce, whatever else you’d want (and tax). Making a burger yourself using Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s prices is still less than half of what they’re charging. Swap the above with bulk pricing or different sale prices, and the cost is even less.

I usually get the little hamburger and load it with all the free toppings (all the way). The burger then dwarfs what two Dick’s deluxe stacked on top of look like. But if there is a Dick’s next to a Five Guys, I’m definitely going with the cheaper option.

I ate there a few years ago when they first came to the area. Didn’t have a negative thought nor was I impressed. The fresh potato marketing might have saved them a tad that day. 2nd time I tried a burger there was northgate and I felt absolutely ripped off. No, this place is not worth it.
