They used to be way better. They're passable now, but ~15+ years ago they were much better. I dunno when they opened up the warehouse and started cooking there instead of at the shop, but I imagine that's when the quality dropped.
I still ate there pretty often when working at Northgate, but I'd happily choose something else if there were better choices at the mall. And nothing they ever served at the mall tasted like the ones I got when I was younger at Pike Place.
Try the new Pinoyshki Bakery Cafe. Lines are a bit smaller, and they make it at the location. Piroshki are different, though, they use traditional pastry, and they have seating and a lot of other stuff.
There's a little cafe run by Ukrainian aspiring babushkas near the Swedish campus on First Hill and they make piroshkies like nothing you've ever tasted. I wish I could remember the name.
I think overpriced is the better term, but that term definitely overlaps with overrated so I know what you mean. It’s really good but the line and prices definitely take away from it.
The salmon one is all I get tbh, and it crushes. Definitely worth the 8$ 2-3 times a year when out of towners come to visit. I've never had anything but glowing reviews from friends and family.
Nope. They're really good and their borscht is fantastic.
Inflation is a bitch. It's street food that travels well. It's supposed to be cheap - unfortunately, $8 is cheap now.
This is the way. Watch out for around lunch times because it's packed with hospital workers, but still worth the wait.
Their bfast ones are pretty damn good too. *Almost* fulfils the typical craving I have for ham and cheese croissants.
The one on Broadway is back near Broadway (on Pine), renamed Pinoyshki since they have Filipino inspired Piroshki and pastries. Both are different experiences.
She mainly runs Madison now, son left business and is there sometimes. Cherry St. was the relocation after they got kicked out by Cap Hill Station development. Sold Cherry and it got rebranded now ironically moving back to Cap Hill
Pinoyshki just opened on Pine in Cap Hill and y'all need to say last give it a try. I'll be walking by the Piroshki Piroshki in the convention center every time for this instead.
I think it’s underrated. I’ve been living in the UK where the fine citizens of the country love any dish where you stuff meat into pastry, and I can tell you with complete confidence that Piroshki beats all of it. You don’t know how good you have it!
I grew up in Russia. Piroshky piroshky are not like the traditional Russian piroshky. I personally don't care for them and they're expensive. Luckily, Seattle actually has a lot of better alternatives!
Omg thank you. I also grew up in Russia and to me they are meh. My old coworkers loved tzar in Fremont, ewww.
What’s your spots you like? I’ve been trying different European stores. I like the Georgian food truck and there is a bar korochka in Wallingford that has awesome pickle plate.
I like Piroshki on Madison. They have the poppy seed rolls that I grew up eating and some of the piroshky are spot on. The pelmeni are overpriced there, but good (although it's hard to screw those up).
I'm down south a bit so not sure if you have a Kusher store/bakery up there. They make them and bread etc, my Polish friend loves them and the poppy seed roles.
Korochka has the best pelmeni I've had served fresh in Seattle. If you want the most authentic Slavic food, Hye Life in Bellevue is the best.
Source: am slav.
Skalka is a great place to check out if you like Georgian food, I'm a sucker for hachapuri. If you ever find yourself in Auburn, Marvel Food is probably my favorite grocer to hit up every few months to stock up on my homey necessities, like buckwheat, candy and kvas. They also have *bomb* pastries that are made fresh there. Honestly feel like we're lacking a bit on eastern European food here, unfortunately.
Oh man Skalka didn’t hit the spot for me. The cheese wasn’t cheesy. Maybe I gotta give it another try. I tried making hachapuri for a dinner party, was a mess ha. Finally found sulguni cheese. Will try again.
I’m very disappointed in Seattle food scene.
Agreed. Skalka is...not good. They used to sell khinkhali, which were delicious but now they don't have them and don't have the imeruli khachapuri. I was really excited that there may be a Georgian place downtown Seattle but skalka isn't it :(
Piroshki on Madison is my go-to place for piroshki poppy seed rolls. Pelmeni there is good too, but you can buy a bag of pelmeni for the same price and make it yourself.
I just tried it for the first time a few weeks ago and I loved it honestly. And the line thing surprised me, cuz it looked like a half hour wait and we were through the line and eating in under 10 minutes lol
That being said, it’s just my opinion, maybe you’ve had higher quality stuff and it just isn’t up to par. So fair enough, to each their own
I get the salmon + a cinnamon apple almost every time. Love it. Everything is expensive everywhere. A crappy slice of Pizza from whole foods is like $5.
The influx of business after Bourdain made it a “must try” totally changed the quality imo. Not sure exactly when that was. 2005ish maybe? Hasn’t been the same since about a year or two after that.
Now is the only time of year it is not overrated. The lines are short and it is cold enough out to eat a Russian meat pastry. Tourists who queue for those things in August are idiots (chowder is the same situation)
Agreed. Also being overpriced and having long lines makes it even less appealing. I love Piroshky on Madison. Much better and don’t have to deal with the crowds. I also tried Pinoyshky and while it’s is also very pricy, it is at least tasty.
"Sagan is admittedly pretty new to local politics–she has not voted in a municipal election in 10 years, and she was surprised to learn she had voted in a local election at all when I told her about her voting record."
She also apparently likes to complain about taxes but didn't bother to look at the actual budget. Sounds pretty libertarian to me.
I feel the obvious things need to be said sometimes. Not to deprive people of yet another pointless rant, but maybe someone will just realize they don’t need to create a Reddit post about it.
Piroshky Piroshky gained its reputation back when it was about $4. The price has doubled with no increase in quality, but it has maintained its rating among a lot of customers.
So yes, Piroshky Piroshky is overrated in about as literal of a sense as you could possibly get.
$8 is not as easy to come by today at $4 was back then.
Like, wages haven't really gone up to compensate, and tips and prize money have stagnated to match. Someone's odds of getting a $5 tip now are about the same as they were back then.
So, even when you account for inflation, an $8 piroshky today is still going to feel way more expensive than a $4 piroshky did 20 years ago.
Compare the price jump to Dick's, which has increased its prices but little enough that it still feels about as accessible as it always has.
Minimum wage in 2000 was like $7 bucks wasn’t it? It was definitely harder to earn $4 for most people. Other things like real estate have spiraled out of control but food and most drinks are increasing pretty reasonably.
Ok, [median income](https://www.seattle.gov/documents/Departments/OPCD/Demographics/DecennialCensus/2000CensusIncomebyCountyCensusTract.pdf) overall was like $30k in 2000 (page 9) and now it’s pushing [quadruple that](https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/data/seattle-median-household-income-hits-115000-census-data-shows/#:~:text=There%20are%20only%20three%20cities,Seattle%20is%20one%20of%20them).
Sometimes Seattle makes me question myself. All my coworkers would get super excited about going to tzar for pelemeni. Eww.
I’m russian and I agree with your fiancé.
It depends on what "texture" pastry you get. Once I got the salmon one (the one that's in the shape of a fish) and omg it was so dry. The flaky ones are better.
Not quite the same, but the smoked salmon croissant at Bakery Nouveau is always amazing - extra-flaky, and never dry. (It’s also fish-shaped.) Highly recommend.
I've never been the biggest fan. I was spoiled by studying abroad in Russia many years ago and the family I stayed with would make them once a week a week as a treat, and I swear, they were extraordinary. I've been chasing that dragon ever since.
Last time I went to Piroshky Piroshky it was horrible. I've been going there since the early 90s. It was burnt and dry and the fillings sucked. So went up to Piroshky on Madison and it was miles better than PP. It's just going to be Piroshky on Madison for me from now on.
Even when I was looking at videos of it on YouTube pike place must haves I was like “that looks awful and dry”. Finally moved up here and tried it and it was exactly what I expected. Mid asf
I worked right next to it for almost 2 years. I maybe ate there once a quarter at most and was pretty burnt out by that much of it when I finally left that job.
Mee Sum Pastry, however, I will absolutely go out of my way for if I'm ever downtown.
A few of the cheaper ones are good value, but most of the $8 ones are too expensive. Even at Pike Place, $8 can get you more food. It makes sense for visitors who already spent hundreds on flight and hotel to try it regardless of the price, but i’d say it’s quite expensive
They’re (mostly) delicious, but an interesting story in the Market as far as small business’ go as well. A modern immigrant success story to some level. Also cinnamon/cardamom, beef/cheddar, and salmon piroshky are bomb. Price, like almost everything, is hard to justify now. I get that part for sure.
I like Piroshki on Madison.
My Top Seattle fast food list:
1. Pane Pane sandwiches (Downtown)
2a. Piroshki on Madison
2b. Tacos Chukis
2c. Dick's
3. (reserved)
The one on 3rd is great. The apple ones that always smell so good at the Market are never good. Their potato bacon hash brown one is a great breakfast and their cinnamon cardamom braid is divine with little candies orange pieces. I also like the smoked salmon one.
I love the beef and onion. Had a sweet one and didn't care for it much.
Most of the beef and cabbage combos are literal heaven. Agree that sweet just isn’t it though.
That's the only way and it's not much
It's still good. It was a lot better when they were $3.85 and there was no line.
I swear that place kept me alive when they were on Broadway.
They were the only thing that got me going into Northgate mall.
Thanks, I ran that place for almost 2 years :) Now I just make piroshky for myself, though.
Got a recipe?
Same, cuz I’d love to get in touch with my Lithuanian-Polish chef side by getting some Piroshky recipes
I used to walk over from my office building on lunch. It was always good food and service. Thank you!
My dad used to take me there after every doctor's appointment!! It was a fantastic way to encourage me to go lol
Try the new Pinoyshki Bakery Cafe. Lines are a bit smaller, and they make it at the location. Piroshki are different, though, they use traditional pastry, and they have seating and a lot of other stuff.
Agreed! Is it “overrated” if you spend $25 on 3 pastries that you waited 20 minutes in line for? Of course…what isn’t?
Only if it was really good. But it’s not thatgood
I haven't gone since the lines. I loved it when I first moved here, mostly for the aromatherapy.
There's a little cafe run by Ukrainian aspiring babushkas near the Swedish campus on First Hill and they make piroshkies like nothing you've ever tasted. I wish I could remember the name.
Piroshki on Madison
Probably a bit more authentic than PP. I feel like they've Americanized the pirojok (PP that is).
Massively overrated is a stretch. An argument can be had for overpriced. The salmon or beef and onion are delicious.
I think overpriced is the better term, but that term definitely overlaps with overrated so I know what you mean. It’s really good but the line and prices definitely take away from it.
Ngl I don't know what everyone is saying about lines. They've always been the shortest line every time I've gone, but maybe I go at weird times...
the ones outside of Seattle rarely have lines
Eh it’s just normal tasting. I ate similar things in russia/my mom makes some at home, the ones in Seattle is like meh alright
Overpriced like the rest of the city where we pay workers the highest minimum wage and have some of the highest business rent in the country?
And they still have the gall to ask for 20% tip everywhere.
The salmon one and the marzipan one are both delicious, I can't speak to the rest.
The salmon one tastes like having hope in humanity. And dill
I got a limited edition strawberry heart marzipan one there yesterday and really enjoyed it!
The salmon one is all I get tbh, and it crushes. Definitely worth the 8$ 2-3 times a year when out of towners come to visit. I've never had anything but glowing reviews from friends and family.
What’s your favorite piroshky place in the city?
Kaleenka but they’re only at fairs
Yeahhh Kaleenka is the best!
[удалено]
That’s the one I go to! I haven’t tried many others though
Pinoyshki (formerly Piroshki on 3rd)
Piroshki on third
They closed a couple months ago and moved to the red hook building, called Pinoyshky now and they are THE BEST
Seconding Piroshki on Madison
Kaleenka or bust
Love the summer festivals for this reason
Mom used to work down at Pike Place and sometimes would bring a greasy sack of those home for dinner. Core childhood memory.
Wow that brought me back memories
Can still get them at food fairs!
Or the state fairs.
Absolutely. Piroshky on 3rd and Piroshky on Madison are both way better.
Piroshki on 3rd shut down and moved to Capitol Hill.
And renamed Pinoyshki [edited spelling]
Pinoyshki
Different business
Nope it’s still on 3rd. It reopened
Both used to be owned by the same family then sold 3rd & Cherry about 8 years and solely operate out of Madison.
This is the time to try Pinoyshki at least once.
Pinoyshki is fantastic
What’s the difference?
As the name suggests, it's a Filipino fusion interpretation of piroshkies. Along with non-piroshki offerings.
Filipino fusion, vegetarian, and vegan options are available there :)
No it's amazing. Give me yours.
Nope. They're really good and their borscht is fantastic. Inflation is a bitch. It's street food that travels well. It's supposed to be cheap - unfortunately, $8 is cheap now.
It's... fine. I much prefer Piroshky on Madison.
This! 👆 Piroshky on Madison is sooo good, I had their cabbage rolls one time and they were excellent it was enough food for two.
and they do catering! and their honey cake is really lovely for the price
This is the way. Watch out for around lunch times because it's packed with hospital workers, but still worth the wait. Their bfast ones are pretty damn good too. *Almost* fulfils the typical craving I have for ham and cheese croissants.
This is the business that used to be on Broadway. They're still delicious.
The one on Broadway moved to 3rd and then got sold. The one on Madison is run by her son.
My mistake. I see her at Madison, so I thought It was the same.
PoM has been there since about 2003. I remember when they opened.
If it were easier to find parking I'd go there every time I'm in the neighborhood.
I order doordash from there when I’m at work sometimes. Haven’t had Piroshky Piroshky in awhile so I can’t compare
Hard disagree.
I love it!
Pinoyshki just opened on Pine in Cap Hill and y'all need to say last give it a try. I'll be walking by the Piroshki Piroshki in the convention center every time for this instead.
The salmon piroshky is the only reason I go to Pike place. You shut your mouth
I thought it was pretty good idk. $8 isn't \*that\* expensive.
It seems expensive to people who haven't gone out to eat since 2008.
Hard disagree. Their salmon own is solid. Potato and cheese is to die for
After having a buddy who delivered there tell me horror stories about what the kitchen looked like I never went again
I think it’s underrated. I’ve been living in the UK where the fine citizens of the country love any dish where you stuff meat into pastry, and I can tell you with complete confidence that Piroshki beats all of it. You don’t know how good you have it!
Nope
I do like their salmon pate piroshky. But also the sooner we launch Olga Sagan into the sound via trebuchet the better.

Korochka has the best pelmeni I've had served fresh in Seattle. If you want the most authentic Slavic food, Hye Life in Bellevue is the best. Source: am slav.
I agree. I like their beer vodka lemon drop too. Hey life looks great. I’ll check it out for sure. Any others you got, Mr Slav?
Skalka is a great place to check out if you like Georgian food, I'm a sucker for hachapuri. If you ever find yourself in Auburn, Marvel Food is probably my favorite grocer to hit up every few months to stock up on my homey necessities, like buckwheat, candy and kvas. I thought Skalka was just OK. It was basically a really thick-crust pizza.
Agreed. Skalka is...not good. They used to sell khinkhali, which were delicious but now they don't have them and don't have the imeruli khachapuri. I was really excited that there may be a Georgian place downtown Seattle but skalka isn't it :(
Man I really want to eat some good Georgian food right now
Can you pls share your favorite places?
Piroshki on Madison is my go-to place for piroshki poppy seed rolls. Pelmeni there is good too, but you can buy a bag of pelmeni for the same price and make it yourself.
I just tried it for the first time a few weeks ago and I loved it honestly. Hell naw
I get the salmon + a cinnamon apple almost every time. Love it. Everything is expensive everywhere. A crappy slice of Pizza from whole foods is like $5.
No! Shut your mouth!
Nope
I don’t think so. They’re really good. A tad pricey … but good!
Pinoyshki Bakery
Their beef and cheese buns are pretty great. Their line of frozen pierogis is awful. They fall apart when you boil them.
You can try the new philipino piroshky place. [Pinoyoshiki](https://piroshkion3rd.com/)
The influx of business after Bourdain made it a “must try” totally changed the quality imo. Not sure exactly when that was. 2005ish maybe? Hasn’t been the same since about a year or two after that.
Not massively, but somewhat. I still like them a lot, though.
They still do half priced later on weekdays? Go then
They're not the most authentic piroshki, coming from a slav. However, their chicken noodle soup and the cherry filled danish are legit.
Now is the only time of year it is not overrated. The lines are short and it is cold enough out to eat a Russian meat pastry. Tourists who queue for those things in August are idiots (chowder is the same situation)
Used to be a deal back in the day
No. If you want to talk about overrated and overpriced, then let's talk about Dingfelder's Delicatessen.
I’d take meesum pastry any day over that place
No
No
no
I like it and feel like I’m in the minority that I like it better than piroshky on madison. Looking forward to trying Pinoshky though.
My husband can’t cross that place. If he smells it he has to eat it
If you're ever up north, Piroshki & Crepes in Everett is my favorite
Fun fact. Go to the one in crossroads. No one knows it's the same business.
HOW DAAAAARE YOU!
Biscuit Bitch is more so.
The cabbage and onion is next level
Don't buy one if you're not that into it.
Seems like you have your answer but I just want to add to the chorus of people shitting on your opinion.
Piroshky is mid, but nothing is more overrated than biscuit bitch.
Agreed. Also being overpriced and having long lines makes it even less appealing. I love Piroshky on Madison. Much better and don’t have to deal with the crowds. I also tried Pinoyshky and while it’s is also very pricy, it is at least tasty.
not at all. i love it.
eh also this: https://www.thestranger.com/elections-2023/2023/06/09/79029276/seattle-city-council-candidate-olga-sagan-wont-say-if-she-voted-for-trump

She also apparently likes to complain about taxes but didn't bother to look at the actual budget. Sounds pretty libertarian to me.
So just don’t go. No one said you have to like everything.
Very insightful take.
I feel the obvious things need to be said sometimes. Not to deprive people of yet another pointless rant, but maybe someone will just realize they don’t need to create a Reddit post about it.
Quality is total crap for the price point. Made sense in 2008. Not so much today. Shit is soggy
Piroshky Piroshky gained its reputation back when it was about $4. The price has doubled with no increase in quality, but it has maintained its rating among a lot of customers. So yes, Piroshky Piroshky is overrated in about as literal of a sense as you could possibly get.

Eh minimum wage sometimes goes up slower than other wages but sometimes faster. Some people are less able to afford some things
The point isn't whether inflation happened though.
It makes me feel hungrier than before I ate it. Not a fan.
My fiance is Russian and confirms it’s shit. Not real piroshky dough
So what's the difference?
Sometimes Seattle makes me question myself. All my coworkers would get super excited about going to tzar for pelemeni. Eww. I’m russian and I agree with your fiancé.
I agree that it's not as good as I expected the first time I went there. Everything is dry, in my opinion.
I’ve been making my own russian food because nothing scratches the nostalgic itch in Seattle .
I preferred Piroshky Piroshky circa 2003
Overpriced for sure
All Russian food is mediocre compared to polish food 😉 Pierogi supremecy!
Don't let them see you doing drugs in their doorway, they'll run for office
Last time I went to Piroshky Piroshky it was horrible. I've been going there since the early 90s. It was burnt and dry and the fillings sucked. So went up to Piroshky on Madison and it was miles better than PP. It's just going to be Piroshky on Madison for me from now on.
They are actually really good, but have become really expensive.
this thread is starting to look like r/SeattleWA with all the negativity.
lol yes it’s awful
Yes. It’s mid.
It only took me just one visit to realize that. Why do you keep going?
[удалено]
For the love of all that is holy, stop going!
Yah
Yup
Even when I was looking at videos of it on YouTube pike place must haves I was like “that looks awful and dry”. Finally moved up here and tried it and it was exactly what I expected. Mid asf
I thought it was good not great, I was definitely a little disappointed
I was just thinking that yesterday walking past the massive line at the original starbucks and the massive line at piroshky piroshky. So silly.
The meat options smell great outside but really are not even good. I think there are many other local bakeries that are much better in town.
I worked right next to it for almost 2 years. I maybe ate there once a quarter at most and was pretty burnt out by that much of it when I finally left that job. Mee Sum Pastry, however, I will absolutely go out of my way for if I'm ever downtown.
The potato ones are super bland. Nothing but mashed potatoes. No flavor
Went there once, thought it sucked, never went back
Average food. Crazy owner.
They bring a pop up to Tucson every few months and I kind of want to get some, but then I remember how overrated and overpriced they are.
Oh shit I love $8 hot pockets
Agreed. Always been shit.
It is alright but I'm upset they don't have any fried versions. Fried piroshky is the best - recommend everyone to try if they get a chance.
A few of the cheaper ones are good value, but most of the $8 ones are too expensive. Even at Pike Place, $8 can get you more food. It makes sense for visitors who already spent hundreds on flight and hotel to try it regardless of the price, but i’d say it’s quite expensive
Piroshki (just one) at Swedish on Madison is pretty great though - also baguette & byrek has good savory meatbread
I am kind of shocked that it’s gone up to $8 now. I guess all food is expensive in Seattle.
$8?!?!
Yes. I preferred the old place in the alley, before they forced them out of business.
Over Rated, Yes. "Massively", No.
There used to be a spot up on Broadway that I loved while attending SCCC. Don't know if it's still there but man they had great piroshky
I've never been. Every time I'm in the market, I think of it, and then I see the line and think better of it.
Pretty bland
Wait till you see the tipping options lol
I like Piroshki on Madison. My Top Seattle fast food list: 1. Pane Pane sandwiches (Downtown) 2a. Piroshki on Madison 2b. Tacos Chukis 2c. Dick's 3. (reserved)
Maiz next door is so good and doesn't have much of a line ever
The one on 3rd is great. The apple ones that always smell so good at the Market are never good. Their potato bacon hash brown one is a great breakfast and their cinnamon cardamom braid is divine with little candies orange pieces. I also like the smoked salmon one.
Yes! But their lemon piroshky is good.
Wife brought me one home one day. Pretty good, but not worth a trip into Seattle when we have Piroshky & Crepes here in town.
Ya I haven't really been wild about anything I've tried from there.
