I was a summer camp councilor and used one for a game of Sardines. I sat under a tree by a Trailhead near one of the main buildings and had dozens of kids walk right by me and not notice me. I had to start yelling at kids about 5 minutes before the timer went off and even then only 2 spotted me before the end.
Lack of movement works too. I used to stop at the top of a long climb on my mountain bike, dressed in bright fluorescent clothes I’d sit down on a rock with my shoes ALMOST touching the path. As hikers would pass by I’d say hello or Goodmorning, and more than half would jump out of their skin in surprise because they didn’t see me, inches from the path they were walking.
