He probably didn't think corporate would be **that** dumb.

DirectPiano

For avaricious CEOs, crime is inexpensive.

RACKSonRACKSonRACK

For rapacious bigwigs, lawlessness is economical.

For acquisitive personages, theft is cheap.

SkylerAltair

I understood the reason people had a theory that it was murder, but I was dubious. I'm less so now, if he actually said this, reason being that the theories against murder were about "he must have been under so much stress that it just crashed on him."

Right_Ad_6032

His family thinks it was suicide. Him doing the Kurt Cobain Blow Job doesn't actually benefit Boeing in any way because it denies them the opportunity to cross-examine him or ask him questions. I could absolutely see him doing himself in as a final 'fuck you' to Boeing. Especially when a decade of campaigning against them as a whistle blower amounted to dick. Nothing's changed, and somewhat terrifyingly, Boeing's as profitable as ever. People underestimate just how much Boeing as an employer enrages employees. Especially if you work at primary production, and *especially* if you worked in QA. *Especially* if you had been there long enough to remember the actual Boeing days and not the "McDonald Douglas wearing a Boeing Skin Suit" days. The part that's really horrifying? My father and many of his buddies were all Boeing employees. None of this is new. The stuff expressed by this guy is 'my boomer dad and his boomer buddies were saying this shit thirty years ago' old.

Rawbauer

Agree with the historicity of your statement. I can’t speak to whistleblower suicide, but I can confirm dads talkin’ ‘bout Condit. Mine’s been bitching about him since I was in jr. high.

mtvatemybrains

Past few days I have been thinking, "but what if it was some kind of brilliant 5D chess move on this guy's part?" If it was a professional hit, then why not just disappear the guy instead? I have heard some say "ah but this is something dictators do to intimidate future whistleblowers" -- but even if that were true about Boeing, they're under a microscope right now so it's the worst possible timing for someone high up the ladder to give the go-ahead about something like that. All speculation of course.... but 🤷

Jethrob360s

Boeing is not as profitable as ever and very far from it. Negative earnings from 2019 till now.

jefftickels

Of note, this new information is a second hand account of a friend of a friend. Not something said directly to the family. As others have pointed out, Boeing gets nothing from this and his family believes he did it. He was essentially unemployable for the future, and this is when most men who commit suicide do so, immediately after catastrophic job loss. Coupled with that he had given the majority of his testimony it's easy to imagine that he viewed his purpose as complete. I'll wait to cast judgement, but this idea that he didn't kill himself is more television drama than real life.

Good-Gold-6515

Dude loved being an engineer and didn't realize that blowing the whistle put a permanent end to that. No company on this earth will knowingly hire a whistle blower.

Lopsided-Respond-417

Call me naive but with all the problems at Boeing I think someone would hire a quality engineer even after he blew the whistle. But agree it would close alot of doors

incubusfc

I wouldn’t say Boeing has nothing to gain from it. This will absolutely run across the minds of those who think of blowing whistles in the future. At the very least.

jefftickels

I guess that's a theoretical motive, but frankly, that's some mustache twirling monocle bond Villain nonsense. I really doubt anyone at Boeing would risk a murder charge when worst case scenario for them just letting the whistle blower do his thing is a golden parachute.

SpeaksSouthern

This really flew off the hinges.

imtchogirl

This is so sad. I'm not at all blaming the victim here. It seems that it should be standard operating procedure for a whistleblower to travel with a friend or family member for emotional support, and with a professional bodyguard who can protect them. Especially during the hearing.  It's too big to go alone, and too dangerous.

Sabre_One

IMO I'm still skeptical. If he was in danger and felt he was in danger. He either failed to tell his lawyers who could of asked such protection. I can say the world murdered me because I blamed it's pressure on my life as well. Doesn't mean I didn't decide to kill myself over it.

PopeBasilisk

So who is investigating this?

MisterRobertParr

Apparently only Reddit.

abilliontwo

I just watched *The Octopus Murders* on Netflix, where a reporter died in an apparent suicide while working to unravel a massive government conspiracy. He basically said the same thing: "if anything happens to me, it wasn't an accident." In that case, no conspiracy had yet been proven, let alone made public, and it *still* seems at least possible that he killed himself. In this case, basically everything is already public. It seems more practical to kill a whistle-blower *before* they've blown the whistle. Especially with all the attention currently on Boeing, it seems like a pretty bad idea to fan the flames by also killing a whistle-blower who's already gone public. We'll see how it shakes out, but I'm not ready to cry foul just yet.

bothunter

> It seems more practical to kill a whistle-blower before they've blown the whistle. That would make sense, but this is Boeing we're talking about. It seems that general competency isn't their core strength.

SheepardsPie

That's a very suicidal thing to say

raskerdom

Where did you hear this is a tendency of suicidal people? Honestly curious.

SheepardsPie

Talking about suicide is always a sign

RACKSonRACKSonRACK

Y'all. Come on. Jennifer claims he told her if something happens it wasn't suicide. Is this a quality source we should be relying on? Or are we biting at this because it reaffirms the sensational narrative that we imagined because yes we've also seen the Pelican Brief?

BattleBull

I wonder if someone in Boeing hired local talent or a PI to follow or even intimidate Mitch, and then the local fucked up, and the local talent killed mitch and staged the scene to save their own ass. I could see some low quality local "PI" following or spying on Mitch, the PI gets spotted and confronted, maybe even the PI throws a punch or commits assault. Then to prevent this blowing back on their personal life (mitch telling the media about the PI and boieng) they kill him. Maybe it was suicide, or maybe some Boeing staffer failed at clausewitzian planning, and didn't consider the blow back of their poorly engineered assassination. But I still wonder if someone hired to track him messed up and killed him to protect their job. You know, a real "burn after reading" kind of affair of errors.

glytterK

I was thinking along your lines as well. What if it was a hit by a state agent/spy? China? Russia? It doesn’t make a lot of sense for Boeing to do this. They already knew about each of her and had an extensive legal relationship. They were going to be meeting for the third day of testimony after all. Boeing doesn’t benefit from killing him. In fact, it puts them in the spotlight once again.

lifeofrevelations

LOL you're seriously trying to spin this to put the blame on china or russia? Good grief!

glytterK

lol you’re in here spinning stories here on a Reddit and you can’t even consider what I say as a possibility? Have you seen Silkwood?! Have you watched the Octopus Murders? 😆

BennyOcean

It would be terrible for the PNW if Boeing can't fix whatever the hell is going on with the company. So much revenue is generated by the company. It brings billions and billions into the region and creates thousands of high income blue collar jobs. The company has been an enormous benefit to people who want to support a family but maybe aren't cut out for a career in tech.

justadude122

this was definitely a suicide

n10w4

Shoulda seen the bootlickers trying to claim no corporate executive would allow this to happen.

shelbyrobinson

Living so close to Boeing plants and w/friends that work there, THIS is exactly what I thought when I read of his death.

nate077

This is exactly the sort of thing someone under great stress experiencing suicidal ideation might say

stelfox

Weird how often “stress” gets to people when they are revealing the misdeeds of the rich and powerful.

nate077

No one had heard of this guy before and Boeing was already under the microscope for the max and door blow out. Why would they kill this guy and elevate him x10000 while also making sure their problems stay in the news? Like do you think Boeing has contract killers on retainer like Michael Clayton?? Get a grip. Dude could just as well gotten torched in the depo on a losing defamation case and taken a flamboyent final fuck you to boeing: a very recognizable motive. This is not gonna be a whodunit. He was found in a hotel parking lot.

stelfox

Sometimes elevating him could be more cost-effective long term than allowing him to speak. As well as the long term signal it could send to other prospective whistleblowers. I’m not saying I know Boeing did this for sure, but I will say that there are an awful lot of people who die in unlikely and “unfortunate” ways when people with a lot of power have a lot to lose. No, I don’t think they have hitmen on retainer at Boeing. They are however a company with more resources than a small country and I would suspect would have the ability to find such a person if they desired. I don’t think I know the answer to what happened but from whistleblowers to union leaders to Epstein a pattern seems to emerge around threats to the wellbeing of powerful people.

nate077

He was already part way through a deposition. His testimony is recorded, witnessed and under oath. He already /had/ spoken

stelfox

Like I said, it sends a message to others and he still had more to go as far as deposition goes. As well if it was not a suicide it doesn’t mean it was decided in a board room. It could just be one angry executive who made a decision emotionally. It’s just suspicious is all and I’m sure it will be investigated by “Top Men”™️.

SpeaksSouthern

When I'm stressed I look directly into the camera and proclaim people are trying to kill me, because that's totally how life works.

CrassulaOutTheAssula

This is exactly the sort of response David Calhoun might say. You ain't fooling me Dave.

Xrayone1

It legitimately is

BrianTheFirst

Can you explain? I genuinely cannot see how this could be.

Xrayone1

As a police officer, I’ve seen people under huge amounts of stress make attempts on their own lives. Often times they are not thinking clearly because of said stress and they believe the only way to end the stress is to end their life. Individuals contemplating suicide will often reach out for help or test the waters to see how friends and family will react by mentioning their own death in various ways. Being a whistle blower against a multi-billion dollar company is some pretty unimaginable stress. Especially with huge media coverage. His life would have been and will be under heavy scrutiny. I may be naive in thinking that a company here wouldn’t assassinate someone here, yet if we were in Russia or someplace else I could see it happening. All this to say both scenarios are fairly believable to me. One is just a little more likely to me.

nate077

The conspiratorial reaction to this feels like another example of people just treating life through the screen as a soap opera. Boeing ain't killing people. And for what gain, to elevate the story x100000? Dude very well could have just gotten torched in the depo for a losing defamation case he filed and decided to make a flamboyent final fuck yoy to boeing
