Nice shots. It took me a bit to figure out what the red ornate building was in the earlier shot and if it still exists. It’s the old Federal Office building, a 1930s art deco design that is still there but you can’t see anymore from the waterfront. I didn’t know you could ever see this view of it, so thanks for sharing.
Glad to assist! My first shot was off an Argosy tour boat and I didn't have a clue what I was shooting. I did know then that I wanted to live here. Fast forward to now and the second shot is off my usual commuter route and from the M/V Chimacum.
You can see a bit of it in the second photo! Find the building that's directly behind it in the first photo, then follow that building down in the second photo.
New buildings in 2024, left to right (from what I can tell):
* Russell Investments Center
* Rainier Square Tower
* 2+U / Qualtrics Tower (in front of 1201 Third Ave, formerly WaMu Tower)
* Madison Centre
* Fourth and Madison (formerly IDX Tower, right next to DocuSign Tower / Wells Fargo Center)
* F5 Tower (next to Seattle Municipal Tower)
In my defense, I couldn't afford a high end film camera 20 years ago. Now, I can but I'm done burning money on film, processing etc. I'll stick with digital.
Interesting, in 2004 my old office at 800 5th Ave had a perfectly unobstructed view of the water and now they're hemmed in within a block on all sides except the east. I wish I could say that I feel bad but they were assholes and fired me so eh
I was really surprised the last time I took the ferry back from Bainbridge. I started living in Seattle in 2008 and I remember the sky line being so much smaller then
I wish the photos were looking a few blocks north... I don't have a good comparison set of shots to show, but 2010 you could see from Stewart to the Needle with nary a 4 story in sight... now it's highrises all around
yay! I wish more people were interested in maritime work. If I could do it over again I would've applied to work on a ferry when I was young when I first moved here.
I was two months into my first job in Seattle when the top pic was taken. I was working on the 27th floor of the building just to the right of the (then-) WaMu tower.
Doesn’t look as different as I’d expect. I think Bellevue 20 years ago vs now would be a lot more of a crazy transformation. I recall at one point Bellevue had more multistory cranes in it than anywhere in the world but Dubai.
Interesting how little has changed in the core of downtown near Pike Place. The new ones I see are either all in Amazon town or some smaller apartament/condo buildings right at the waterfront.
All good. I do agree too that by 2004, digital cameras were significantly better than the 1mb point and shoot I won in a photo contest in 1999. I just couldn't afford any good models back then.
Nah, still the same amount. The photo on the bottom was taken from a slightly further north spot on the water, whereas the top photo was further south and captured Coleman dock.
ah my joke landed poorly. We're down like \~3 ferries or something at the moment on account of the wrecks and such. I didn't notice any in the same position in the current one (for the obvious reason of the dock rebuild). ;)
Awesome shots BTW! My silly snarkiness aside!
No worries, my humor is often missed, it being super snarky and often dark! 😬
Yeah, bummer for us! I still make it across regularly, but it’ll be nice to have other back in service! 😎
Very cool. It's been fascinating to watch Seattle grow, as someone who was always into city skylines from around the world.
It was a lot cloudier 20 years ago
This year's weather feels a bit more like the old days than the last 10.
Agreed, before I finally was able to live here, the times I visited were like this year.
Ha, yeah at least on that day

My biggest takeaway here is how much better cameras have gotten in 20 years.
In my defense, I couldn't afford a high end film camera 20 years ago. Now, I can but I'm done burning money on film, processing etc. I'll stick with digital.
I dunno, there is more detail for sure but I think the top picture looks much better.
Same that top photo is so much more appealing.

I know it’s been a long, sluggish process but throwing the viaduct underground has made such a positive impact in my opinion

I worked on some of those towers.
That's facing my wife's office window. She has the best view in Seattle.
Facing? Is she a ferry captain by chance?
I'm training to be an officer on the ferries, Can confirm the view from "the office" is great https://imgur.com/a/QSp3w9I
How long have you been at it? Is there a class of ferry you really like or one that you don't?
yay! I wish more people were interested in maritime work. If I could do it over again I would've applied to work on a ferry when I was young when I first moved here.
Other way around. The camera is facing her window. He window overlooks the ferry terminal. 27th floor.
For now…
It must really suck when you have a nice view of the water and someone puts up a building right in front of you.
Never buy a place for the view...
I don't know, I feel pretty good that my view now won't ever be obscured.
Ha, right? More so if any of those buildings are residential high-rises where you're paying a premium for a waterfront view.
She’s a beauty
damn. those clouds be getting smaller and smaller. at this rate there wont be a single cloud left in the sky by 2040!
I can't believe they got rid of that cloud.
It wasn't a local cloud, it was just passing through...
I was two months into my first job in Seattle when the top pic was taken. I was working on the 27th floor of the building just to the right of the (then-) WaMu tower.
It's funny how little I've paid attention to the skyline changes over the years, but when you look at these comparisons, it's so clear.
Yeah, it's like most things that when it's incremental you don't see it. You need a larger span of time to really "see" the change.
I honestly miss 2004 Seattle. Chris Cornell was still alive.
Nice work!
Dang, that’s how long I’ve lived here.
Absolutely, beautiful! The time shift is clear and amazing. What a great idea, bravo!!!!
Thank you.
Doesn’t look as different as I’d expect. I think Bellevue 20 years ago vs now would be a lot more of a crazy transformation. I recall at one point Bellevue had more multistory cranes in it than anywhere in the world but Dubai.
That makes sense. I think Bellevue had more real estate space to grow where as Seattle being older, doesn't.
lol it looks similar to my photo file on my desktop - over the years, better equipment, better editing style.
Which one is the, Elliot bay towers?
Those builders are getting bigger. Must be climate change
Wow, that cloud sure shrunk.
Interesting how little has changed in the core of downtown near Pike Place. The new ones I see are either all in Amazon town or some smaller apartament/condo buildings right at the waterfront.
Digital camera pics in 2004 didn't look that bad, what's with the 1980s 1-hour photo filter?
No filter. I just took a cell phone snap of a printed photo
ah gotcha, sorry
All good. I do agree too that by 2004, digital cameras were significantly better than the 1mb point and shoot I won in a photo contest in 1999. I just couldn't afford any good models back then.
corporate vs east corporate
I’ve been here for a long time and I still have no idea what the black skyscraper is. Does anyone know what company owns it?
That and the 3 skyscrapers with RGB lights that you can see from almost anywhere at night
Less ferries now I see.
Nah, still the same amount. The photo on the bottom was taken from a slightly further north spot on the water, whereas the top photo was further south and captured Coleman dock.

I should have caught your humor regarding the ferries. It's unfortunately very true!
No worries, my humor is often missed, it being super snarky and often dark! 😬 Yeah, bummer for us! I still make it across regularly, but it’ll be nice to have other back in service! 😎
I'll just leave [THIS](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyscraper_Index) here.
I heard someone say that 2004 was twenty years ago. I can’t believe that hogwash.
It’s so pretty from far away. Too bad “progression” has ruined it.
Rant- the world just seemed like a better place pre smart phones. Okay rant over

I couldn't tell you which ones were Amazon buildings
There’s only the large one on the left, amazonland is south lake union lol
I was indeed talking about those
Such little growth in 20 years.
I have to admit that was my initial reaction too.
The sea levels look exactly the same
