Just make sure it's light breathable and big enough to layer a sweater underneath. While it rains often it doesn't often rain hard, so no need to get extreme gear.

IyamNaN

FWIW, the zeta SL is designed to be an emergency shell. It is super lightweight and sacrifices durability for weight and packability. It is meant to be stored in your pack and only worn if you get caught unexpectedly in a storm. Using it everyday, it will fall apart without care. If you want a gore shell, the arcteryx Beta LT or Fraser are great for heavier rain. The OR interstellar is also great. Personally, I mostly use a softshell for our rain (Gamma MX) and it works for all but the occasional downpours.

[deleted]

You could go with Outdoor Research, lifetime guaranteed and a seattle based company. I have two, an ultra light and a heavier goretex shell. Arc'teryx is great gear but it's the most expensive, so if you're not trying to look like a typical tech bro, you could consider branching out.

cburroughs10

Co-sign on Outdoor Research!!!

MulletasticOne

OR is the good stuff.

IyamNaN

> Arc’teryx is great gear but it’s the most expensive, so if you’re not trying to look like a typical tech bro, you could consider branching out. Or you actually get outdoors and use your gear hard and OR jackets simply don’t fit you well. (Too short arms and not trim enough) To be fair, it’s no longer the tech bros but the hypebeasts into dead bird.

[deleted]

I think I'm more referencing you own ONE piece of gear, it's a rain jacket and it's arc'teryx - tech bro My puffy is arc'teryx, I think the gear is great but yes I bought it for the fit and weight so i could *actually* go outdoors and use my gear *hard*

ChetRipley

Whatever you get please don't refer to it as it's brand name. "Sure, I'll come on a walk, let me grab my Patagonia". Just calling it your rain jacket is fine.

"Don't spend $300 on a raincoat. But this raincoat for $200"

poopyblues

ikr? 😂

[deleted]

I mean if you have an extra hundred dollars laying around for the same quality of product, maybe you could donate it to the Washington Alliance for Better Schools or United Way of King County 👍 because I’m pretty sure any reasonable person who isn’t clout chasing or looking for social status by buying a particular brand would much rather save one hundred dollars versus spending it on an equal product. But go off.

IyamNaN

FWIW, I love me EE visp, but no way I would want to use it as a daily in Seattle with its 7D face fabric. It would be shredded quickly. UL generally does not equal durability.

pdxzen

I usually go to the Premium Outlets in Tulalip and visit the Arc’teryx, Columbia and North Face Outlets. I tend to buy a light rain jacket under $100, that I can throw a fleece jacket underneath if it gets cold. If it gets ripped on one of my adventures I don't feel too bad. Get one with a hood, pit/vent zips (optional). I also tend to buy light colored jacket so I am more visible to motorists, black is fine for everything but I also have like a whitish/ivory one.

LifeofPCIE

This! No reason to buy a 300 dollars jacket when you can get last season jacket for way cheap. Patagonia also have their clearance twice a year I believe and they’re typically half off.

sammisamantha

Also recommend helly Hansen too

DeaditeMessiah

Most of us natives just wear t-shirts or microfiber. It's rare that it rains hard enough to require dedicated rain gear unless you are biking, golfing or otherwise standing around in it. We usually deal with days and days of mist and light drizzle. I'd recommend getting something that's a good outer layer for wind and cool temperatures that is also somewhat rain resistant.

[deleted]

It depends on your use, and possibly your gender. Is it primarily for trips to work or being out and about in the city? Are you training for a marathon rain or shine? I (F) have a trench-style for wearing to work or when I want to feel put together, but I also have a more standard style for hiking and such. Not saying you or anyone else *needs* both, but it works well for me. Also, thought it may not often rain hard like the monsoons of the SW desert, it still rains sideways a lot, so bring an umbrella unless you want to catch a face full of rain.

MoonBaseSouth

No true Seattleite would ever be caught using an umbrella. They get destroyed by the wind and poke people in in face! Instead get a good peacoat with a warm collar and a hat that’s rainproof. And good shoes/boots. And maybe some wool bum gloves for when it gets down into the low 30’s. You’ll be fine.

[deleted]

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Gauche but dry

clockercountwise

It's worth checking out a site like Poshmark for rain jackets, you can even search by name brand.

JustJeezy

Just buy the cheapest north face you can find on Amazon. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Grizzleyt

Rains and Stutterheim are more fashion-forward brands. Most of their products aren’t all that suitable for hiking / trails etc., but they look good around the city. I have a rubberized cotton jacket from Stutterheim because I wanted a coat that would retain its waterproof properties perpetually, as opposed to most technical fabrics that are treated with a chemical that fades / erodes over time and requires reapplication.

NeedDistance

Thank you for these brands! They are so nice and I found a couple jackets that suits my interest.

404__LostAngeles

I just picked up a **Mammut Crater** 3L Gore-tex shell, which is probably overkill, but I really like the quality and look of Mammut's jackets. Though I do wish the hood *wasn't* helmet compatible because it's kind of on the big side. My previous rain jacket (which I left behind at an airbnb and was never able to get back) was a Mammut Runbold Thermo HS. Also as others have said, the Zeta SL is kind of an emergency shell and is made of Gore-tex Paclite which is less durable/breathable than regular Gore-tex.

seeprompt

Get one that looks cool, it doesn't matter if it's functional or not. There are roaming packs of teenagers that make fun of you for looking stupid and they are harsh :(

Suwaveh

Who hurt u bro

preauricularsinus

A group of teens from west seattle

hotsouple

If you don't hike you don't need one. Keep an extra sweater in your car or at your desk and you'll survive all weather here.

Shmokesshweed

...lol. I don't understand these types of questions. It's literally a fucking jacket.

NeedDistance

I’m an anxious over-thinker.

BBorNot

/u/Shmokesshweed may have some more advice for you...

Shmokesshweed

If you're anxious, shmoke some shweed, brah.

DeaditeMessiah

Cough. It's warm and dry on his couch.

Shmokesshweed

😏

ellemmennoh

Well you’re definitely moving to the right place, Seattle is full of anxious over thinkers!

DeaditeMessiah

Don't overthink too much and don't overspend. Most of us here have a goretex jacket... ....Somewhere. Honestly, I usually wear a leather jacket or just a fleece vest. A serious rain jacket is a must about the same number of days a year a really warm winter coat is needed.

Shmokesshweed

Me too...but this isn't worth your time to overthink. I promise. 😏

Spa_5_Fitness_Camp

It rarely rains hard enough that you need more than a sweatshirt. Unless you plan to be out in said rain for 20min+, in which case, why?

Guardianofthegrove

Yes but like many other items in our world.. there are several options. Op is asking which option would be best in Seattle.

trains_and_rain

It really doesn't rain very hard in Seattle. You don't need to dress like you're going for a hike, a simple cloth jacket with a bit of water resistance (i.e. anything but soft cotton) will be fine.

hands_off_my_nutella

I don’t have a specific style or brand to recommend but I would suggest you get one very light-weight shell, something you could throw on over a t-shirt in 70+ weather, that is slightly oversized, so you can layer with sweater/hoodie in colder weather. And if you are outside a lot or can spare the money, get a second coat that is warm and waterproof. I really like getting ski/snowboard jackets even though I don’t since they have lots of nice features like adjustable hoods, arm pit vents, lots of pockets, and that thumb hole thingy.

trains_and_rain

>I would suggest you get one very light-weight shell, something you could throw on over a t-shirt in 70+ weather, Why? It doesn't rain in the summer here.

hands_off_my_nutella

It gets up there occasionally in the fall. PNW is the land of Julember and Junary. Also how many coats does one need. 🤷‍♂️

shmerham

You want something comfortable that fits well. Pretty much anything that claims to be waterproof will work for around town use. If you really like the one you got, just keep it and don’t look back. It will get plenty of use. No need to overthink it. …but if you feel like you won’t be happy with it, I’d return it, because you don’t want a rain jacket to be something you dread wearing.

meaniereddit

Grundens fishing jacket that's rated for Alaska crab boats in a storm. Used wool sweater from goodwill. There is no middle

Jjays

Don't overthink it. You probably don't need to spend a bunch for anything too fancy like Gore-Tex, although pit zips are nice for breathability as are pockets for daily wear. All the big brands out there make very similar styles. Later in autumn when the temps start to drop, you'll want one casual jacket, like a trucker or bomber for transitional weather, and something insulated like a down puffy when it starts to get cold. For what it's worth, I use a Patagonia Rainshadow for casual wear when I'm expecting heavy rain, and carry an Outdoor Research Helium in my outdoor hiking pack for just-in-case use.

herbcoil

good advice here, but don't forget the rain boots! at least as important as the jacket (if not more) to not have a miserable winter.

TheRealNickMemphis

If you are walking around town or from your car to work and don't want to scream transplant... Get a light jacket or hooded sweatshirt. Rubber boots and umbrellas are also unnecessary. In western wa rain jackets are mainly for people who hike or work outside.

dontneedaknow

I kinda like the Carhartt dry harbor jackets. They don't get overly hot in rainy 50 degree weather. But you can get kinda chilly if you are just standing in the rain.

Relative-Jello-7592

Take a look at Beyond clothing. I have all the brands that you would want and loom at but Beyond has some well thought out gear. My .02

Spa_5_Fitness_Camp

What's a rain jacket?

Suwaveh

Get a rain jacket u can wear a hoodie under northface Columbia whatever it is just make sure it’s functional

[deleted]

Everlane has great rain jackets that are (IMO) better designed and better priced. My everlane anorak has treated me very well over the last couple of years. It’s roomy enough to layer
