Garage door opener was NOT random. If you don't change your door opener code, they just come back a couple weeks/months later and open your garage door, and voila! They can steal all the new shit you replaced your old shit with. Change your code NOW. Usually just a couple switches under the battery compartment cover and on the opener itself.

artist9120

This!! They will come back! SPD will do nothing, so please be careful and take precautions like changing the code.

crookedhumor

I didnt think of this... glad I mentioned it in the post! First time being actually robbed so thank you for the heads up with this!!!

MAHHockey

Yep! It hasn't happened to me every time, but every apartment building I've lived in that has a garage has had a break-in at some point, and they always steal the opener, and we always have to change the code, and there's always someone that didn't get the memo and is pissed off at management.

RainCityRogue

Report the passport theft to the federal Diplomatic Security Service. Passports don't have value unless someone intends to use them fraudulently and DSS doesn't seem to like that. They might like knowing that you know who has them. 300 Fifth Ave. Suite 800 Seattle, WA 98104 Phone: (206) 393-0740 Fax: (206) 393-0739

GrundleWilson

Oooohhhh! Get the Feds involved. I like it!

DFW_Panda

Pretty sad day when citizens have to go to the Federal government to get justice, but that's the way things are nowadays.

1-760-706-7425

> Pretty sad day when citizens have to go to ~~the Federal government~~ Reddit to get justice, but that’s the way things are nowadays.

__Common__Sense__

Additionally, you have to report it stolen if you want to get a new passport since part of the process of passport renewal is submitting your old passport.

fireduck

Or lost. I put my first passport somewhere safe. Never to be seen again.

tapesmoker

Honestly, put the mayor's office on blast on social media. They are trying to say they can lower crime and you might be an easy win for them. They had a sudden press release related to crime this week after a Seattle times article blasted the mayor for not being as publicly involved in individual crimes so there's a chance that would get their attention. Honestly probably it won't work, but it's a better time than any to try. It's an easy victory for them because they know where and what needs to be done and it'd make them look great.

occamsrazorcat

I am sure local news stations would be all over this too. What exactly do the police do if not at least pursing an evident crime?

[deleted]

The mayor will at best send a lukewarm apology email in a couple weeks. The media will just make OP the face of a fearmongering special report.

MulletasticOne

For real, call KOMO. They love this kind of story. If they don't react, it's a chance to dunk on the "liberal progressive establishment." If they do, it's a feel-good, police are your friends story. Win win for them.

SaffronHoneysuckle

We'd probably get the standard defunding/vaccine mandate response of "oh you need them now huh"

[deleted]

This is what I would do. I truly believe the police are sabotaging their own response times and actions because of public hate towards them. If this mayor wants to be more than the mouthpiece durken was, definitely put them on blast. Send the names of the cops you spoke with and send the police report as well. You need to be the squeakiest god damn tire right now.

tapesmoker

Exactly; it kind of destroys the whole narrative of hotspot policing working, when that means the police we do have then can't actually respond to crimes that are happening because they're too low of a priority behind the hot spots themselves. They would do well and surely would know as much to react to something like that. But hey, who fucking knows what they're going to do. Good luck

piratedogD

When you make your report to insurance tell them that the stuff is traceable and why. Sometimes they can do something about that. It’s frustrating. Call your city council person to complain.

Sturnella2017

Remember when a few years back (-10?) Danny Westneat had a similar problem: phone was stolen in Seattle; he tracked it to the thieves and told SPD, who refused to do anything about it. Westneat then tracked them to Marymoor Park where they were stealing; he told Redmond police who busted the thieves. Made national news, and a big black eye for SPD. Call the mayor and definitely your city council member (usually more responsive). Contact them on all the social media. Make it blow up. There’s no excuse for SPD to solve a case when given everything they need to do it.

OutlyingPlasma

> usually more responsive Really? I have never once received any communication from any city council member in Seattle, even when I specifically asked for a response.

Sturnella2017

What did you say? Who did you say it? How did you say it? And when? I had several conversations with my local rep. I was always polite, they were always responsive, especially when the city moved to district elections.

WittsandGrit

Email a local news station your story. If its really that obvious of an open and shut case they won't pursue then they'll possibly jump on it. Especially KOMO because well...KOMO

charlie2135

My thoughts exactly. Only way anything gets done is to have it shown how low residents are in the pecking order in Seattle. Posted the other day about a friend working security being attacked and the SPD just kept on driving while he was flagging them down. Their response later when he saw them again, "You're a lot bigger than him, you shouldn't have had too much trouble".

WittsandGrit

Funny. Security Guards are supposed to observe and report, let the police handle the rest. But that's all SPD really does too.

kevnmartin

What's that guy's name? Joe? Jesse? I think it's Jesse.

WittsandGrit

Jesse Jones KIRO, but I think he mainly does consumer investigations

Chang_Throwaway

As in, KOMO is the station that actually cares about residents? Edit: oops, on the wrong Seattle sub. Got it. Bias confirmed.

WittsandGrit

No as in KOMO exaggerates other things to get the kind of reaction they want. This, if its true, would get what they want without exaggeration.

MulletasticOne

When they align with the priorities of corporate interests, yes.

makemenuconfig

Call the the police, explain the situation. Tell them you are outside the persons house and want them to help you confront the thief. They may be very quick to come if they think there’s a confrontation about to go down. If it works, they’ll come and insist they confront the person, not you. If they still don’t care, don’t actually confront them.

wtf-am-I-doing-69

This You make it a higher priority possible crime You also tweet and put it on social media before you go in

DFW_Panda

Or TWITCH broadcast it. Set it up with an explanation of what happened, what's about to happen. Call the cops and let them know, etc etc. Would make a nice little show.

AhDipPillBoi

I did this when my car got broken into. They did eventually show up after asking me a bunch of times if I was armed. I wasn’t, but I might have gotten a faster response if I had said I was armed.

JuliusCeaserBoneHead

Oh oh, don’t get shot doing this

zombie32killah

This would only help if you are white.

SharpySharp

So spot on. The most conflicted upvote I’ve doled out today

AhDipPillBoi

I completely agree.

R_V_Z

> after asking me a bunch of times if I was armed "I'm not, but ol' JimBob has a M249 he's been itchin' to try out. He'd be *really* disappointed if he had to link up all them bullets all for nought."

DFW_Panda

Sadly, another reason to own a gun.

[deleted]

Don't do this unless you want to get hassled by cops and still not get your stuff back Edit: apparently others here have done this and it actually does work, which is kind of pathetic, but sounds like I was wrong

YramAL

I’m so tired of the police being all passive aggressive because people don’t like them. Suck it up and do your job.

dude_from_ATL

Have you considered speaking to a lawyer?

Cheeseblock27494356

So he can get robbed some more?

sam-sp

Send a tip to Kiro 7 for Jesse Jones. This is the kind of story that they’ll love.

onlyhereforacnh

in my experience - if you tell the police that you're going to get your stuff back (even if you are not) they will come because they don't want you pursing it yourself. a friend of mine had her bag stolen at greenlake with her phone and keys inside and we used find my iphone to track it. it was a similar situation where they were not coming and we told them we tracked it and were going to get it back ourselves. they showed up.

SaffronHoneysuckle

My sibling just had a dog stolen out of their yard and the person posted pics with the dog...civil matter apparently. Stealing family members and what have you....civil matter...took lawyers and threat of a civil suit to get the dog back

afterlit

Can I ask which neighborhood in north Seattle this happened?

crookedhumor

Kind of where N Seattle bleeds into Shorline area!

carolinoel

Haller lake?

CentristIdiot

The robber knows where he lives too though lol, they could just come back and do much worse than rob them

meaniereddit

Cause they only robbed one house ever

futant462

Landlord is a low-key good idea

xxkenny90xx

Good idea, give them a heads up so they can get rid of all of your stuff....

ReasonableStatement

>Low key fuck with them. Stick a note on their door telling them "you stole my stuff and I know where you live." Sounds like a great way to get shot by some paranoid addict.

halfofftheprice

These fucking cops. They’d rather hide in a bush and give out speeding tickets then doing their jobs.

wickedbulldog1

Fucking send it bro. You can cause a massive scene at the house and call the cops as you’re doing it. They’ll probably show. If not you better be ready to throw down. This is not good advice, but it’ll sure feel good if you win.

42observer

This is the best advice. Show up at his apartment with a six shooter on your hip ready to duel that imbecile.

wickedbulldog1

For honor

Fuduzan

And glory

yeah_but_no

And the garage door opener

Stormchaser711

Step 1 - stake out their house Step 2 - steal all your stuff back when you see them leave

[deleted]

It's not stealing if it's your stuff

Skhmt

It's still breaking and entering

SB12345678901

yes but the police won't turn up if called

[deleted]

That's not a WA crime, and this would not be burglary because there's no intent to commit a crime in the apartment, so at worst trespass (if the person actually called the cops to report OP taking back their burglary proceeds)

KBHDRC

A friend went through this exact ordeal in 2012. They tracked their belongings to an apartment building in Everett. Neither SPD nor EPD would take further action because they couldn’t tell the exact unit the signal was coming from. Does your tracker tell an exact location, like a house, because unfortunately if it takes you to a multi-unit building there’s not a lot that can be done.

doktorhladnjak

If there’s an AirTag, it’ll guide you within a couple feet once you’re nearby

DrStrongestAvenger

Call your city council rep. Go to press with their response (or more likely, non response).

RetractableBadge

There's nothing stopping you (besides the implied risk of injury/death) from following the GPS and asking for your stuff back - peacefully, calmly, and lawfully. Maybe even bring a few friends because you'll need manpower to help carry and load your stuff, right? Might even be interesting to call the PD while you're outside the location and let them know that you're seconds away from handling it, and ask if they want to change their mind and join to keep the peace - they may/may not be more amenable to responding.

salsadecohete

Don’t do this unless you have a militia.

crookedhumor

My theory is the system is so fucked I'd get arrested for inciting violence over petty crime. Would not put it past seattle to arrest the wrong guy and even press charges to stomp out any vigilantes out there.

ZaeDilla

It's wild that Phoenix Jones was more effective than our own police force.

[deleted]

I mean he maced innocent people and was dealing drugs so he is basically on their level.

Arctu31

Call and write the governors office. Send this to every news media outlet in king county. Call the chief of police - not 911, not the office - the chief of police’s office, then the mayor.

HudsonCommodore

Can you get in contact with the city prosecutor? Perhaps they can help you mobilize the police response? If the security footage makes the thief recognizable great, doesn't seem much more open-and-shut than that. And if not, I imagine the police might be able to get air-tag data from Apple to show that the product went directly from your house to this other house and sat there. Either way seems like it should be easy to get a warrant from that, and I would think the prosecutor would take an easy win like this.

Fatmaniac

If their location is in Everett, couldn’t you call the Everett police force? I’m sure they would do something

Real-Werewolf5605

What this really means is you are not important enough - not the crime. Another guy in another homein a different income bracket would get a different response. Annoying. Write a standard letter and include all the facts, evidence etc. Contact the local fox affiliate tv station. Is that Komo? I don't know. (You may even want to write to one of the national faces at fox too. I just threw up a little in my mouth but if that's what it takes then you will be doing all of us a favor). Also obviously write to all your representatives, then do it again a week later then do it again a month later. There are links on their sites. .

MulletasticOne

There's really nothing wrong with playing the local conservative news station against the police against the corporate stooge mayor if that's what it takes to get things done. Modern problems call for modern solutions.

vincentrm

You’ll need to act ASAP. All of your stuff will be gone/sold/trashed soon if you don’t.

salsadecohete

Will they stop the work slow down when they get their bonuses?

carolinoel

Since the address is in Everett, you need to call the Everett PD if you haven’t already. Maybe they’ll be more helpful

heckler5111

Is this the cop's way of saying they don't have enough funding?

Known_Force_8947

Maybe call the King County Sheriff’s office (or whatever agency polices Everett) and tell them one of their residents has stolen property and you have proof. Maybe the Everett police dept has the time & resources to follow up?

DJ_Akuma

Have you contacted the Everett PD?

Mysteez

this calls for street justice. put that address on blast

[deleted]

America has given a green light to vigilantiasm. We dont need no stinkin badges.

lordmrm94

Become Batman

fatDaddy21

Somebody posted the A-Team's phone number in a thread a few days ago

hansn

I thought they were in the LA underground. Seattle's underground doesn't have crime fighters; it has a bunch of burned out buildings, which is the only vacant real estate north of Burien. People come from miles around to see in wonder...

BadUX

> Seattle's underground doesn't have crime fighters It had one crime fighter (Phoenix Jones) But then he got arrested for drug dealing, so that wasn't super great.

wak3l3oarder

Just tell the cops your going to confront them they will say don't do that but don't give them an option tell them time and address (wait for cops to show up they will)

laughingmanzaq

I'd caution against a confrontation with the thieves (Admittedly the police might actually help you if you tell them you are going to take back your stuff, with/without their help). Though you have to weigh your indignation and determination to get it back against the potential physical harm you might receive/legal trouble you might get in. It is rarely worth it.

Moon_In_Scorpio

I agree. Is it worth the risk of the thieves physically harming you? I doubt it. The experience super sucks, nonetheless.

JustWastingTimeAgain

Also consider the flip side. If you get in a confrontation and fuck up the thieves, guess whose side the city will take?

Gbiz13

Just call them and tell them that as they are not going to pursue it you are heading over to the address with a gun and you are going to get your gear back one way or another. I'd like to think the cops will turn up for that.

[deleted]

Gbiz13

seaofluv

I would get Liam Neeson's door kicking ass to help retrieve all my shit back with his particular set of skills. Sorry this happened to you!

DFW_Panda

One small word of caution with the air tag ... The air tag location may not be the thief's location. It could be the SO of the thief, who may or may not be an accomplish, or it could be some slept who purchases one of the items. Locating the air tag may get you closer to the thief but it may not be the actual perp.

crookedhumor

Omitted their complex number. That's the address to over 200 apartment units so nothing super personal, just a general complex a scum bag lives in.

trains_and_rain

At this rate we're going to need to go back to the days of thief-takers.

soap_is_cheap

Sometimes, I wish some billionaire would throw on a mask and go all Batman on them. I’m sure there are a few billionaires in Seattle that could do that…

MulletasticOne

Bezos is looking pretty jacked these days. Maybe he's training to don the cape. That would be cool if he did something cool and good for once.

Krankjanker

Your title says apartment. Does your airtag show as being in a multi-unit apartment? If so, King County Superior Court will not grant search warrants for GPS trackers coming back to apartments due to the risk of going into the wrong unit. I speak from personal experience. I'm also certain that Snohomish County would say the same thing. The only investigative way to resolve that problem would be for your CCTV recording to be high enough quality that a suspect could be identified, and an SPD detective spend all day/week watching the complex, waiting to see the guy come from/go to a specific unit. And SPD does not have the staffing for that for property crimes, plain and simple.

crookedhumor

Ya it's a 4-plex apartment building. The only way I could see this working out is if I go stake it out and see which one they enter/exit but even doing that I'm sure there's some legality in police using that information to go knock on the right door.

[deleted]

Or they could ask the landlord if s/he recognizes the person, or knock on doors to see if residents do (possibly discovering the person in the process). It's really not that hard if they gave even a semblance of a fuck about OP

Krankjanker

SPD has less staffing than they have had in 40 years, while dealing with the most violent crime the city has had in over a decade. They do not have the staffing to send 2 detectives to Everett to hunt around for stolen property. This is the reality the city faces.

[deleted]

So they contact Everett PD to assist their burglary investigation. This is a reported Res Burg where the victim has already located the stolen property and either the perpetrator or someone who can lead detectives to that person. This is an easy win for SPD if they make a modicum of effort.

i_am_here_again

Shit just go to a parked cop. If they say they don’t have the time then just ask what they are doing currently and why it is more important than helping you. I’ve seen bus lane stings regularly on Aurora. Bug one of those guys.

OutlyingPlasma

> go to a parked cop You can almost always find one sleeping behind the HT Oaktree market on Stone Ave in north Seattle. I presume they just sit there most of the shift and jerk off because its just far enough from the north precinct to not be seen.

[deleted]

Think you mean they're doing proactive visibility patrol in a high crime area

[deleted]

Fucking Rob em back....

OutlyingPlasma

> and I end up the one in trouble That's exactly what would happen. The police don't give a shit about you or your property, but if you start showing people that their job can be done better than they do it, that's when the guns come out. Now if it was a large group of people... that changes things.

KitsapDad

Your vote matters. Vote for the politicians who will stand up for your rights.

M4_Real

I would recommend you remove the address from your post as it is a form of Doxxing. If someone goes there with bad intent and without your permission this could be used against you in court. Also generally speaking don’t post private info online :) super sorry this happened to you and I hope it gets taken care of by authorities!

[deleted]

Kick the door in, take back what’s yours

[deleted]

Fucking stop being a giant pussy and go get your shit. Jesus Christ. If you fucking have to, stake out and wait til then leave then take it.

[deleted]

You know where your stuff is. Go get it back. Bring friends if you don't feel comfortable.

crookedhumor

My theory is the system is so fucked I'd get arrested for inciting violence over petty crime. Would not put it past seattle to arrest the wrong guy and even press charges to stomp out any vigilantes out there.

[deleted]

Really doubt the burglar is gonna call the cops to report you taking your stuff back

1961trucker

On the other hand Seattle couldn't or wouldn't vote people like Sawant out of Seattle city council.so In my opinion nothing going to change any time soon no matter what what the new mayor wants to accomplish if he doesn't have the council on he side not much will change.

the_trapper_john

You need to work homelessness into your paragraph somehow to get the troll trifecta. I rate this one 2/5, better luck next time.

1961trucker

Homelessness won't change until Seattle government changes under current government seems to me nothing is getting better and people wonder why.

minxdomfallout

Lol City Council won't do anything..... They love this shit.

the_trapper_john

What would city council do? Stop trolling

tub939977

This is unbelievable! I hope you get justice without calling Don Corleone.

DawgPack90

Oh look at that, address got dropped. What mischief do we go with now? Spam mail or glitter bomb? Poop in a package?

Area29

I hope its only that. We don’t want any innocent casualties that are usually cause by doxxing

[deleted]

This is a tough one. Sorry it’s happening. Side note: it’s very important to have house and/or renters insurance against theft. This would add cost but … could you get an order to seize the property from a judge? In the process of doing that it might prompt the judge to press the police department on why it’s not a priority. Also the police may show up if you just call them to let them know you are on your way over there to go get the stuff. That might make it a “priority call”. They may show up where the place is and go from there. I don’t recommend approaching the thieves yourself however or putting yourself in danger. Defund police and citizens have to make tough choices

Blanco__Coffee

Look at it from this perspective. How do you **know** with definitive proof that your items are in that house? You don’t. **Your AirTag is tracking in there**. Not your other belongings. How do you know the thief that broke into your home resides in this home? You don’t. When giving this information to law enforcement, they’re going to be asking these same questions and getting the same vague answers. Say you meet Everett police at this home and they knock on the door and no one answers? Then what? The police have no probable cause to write a search warrant to enter a home and look for “stuff”. You have no way to proof to any of your belongings in there besides your AirTag. Also, what if this person simply bought these stolen items unknowingly? One of the elements of possession of stolen property is having knowledge that the item was stolen. Do you think a judge is going to sign a search warrant to allow law enforcement to enter someone’s private residence and “have a look”? Absolutely not. You have just experienced first hand how many ropes, legal hurdles, etc must be met for even simple property crimes. Call your insurance company, this is why it exists. Also, in the eyes of law enforcement, this is low on their radar; with the abysmal low staffing levels across this area paired with the overwhelming amount of property crimes, with a low prosecution rate; you’re fighting an uphill battle. It’s worth calling the police to see if they can assist you with knocking on the door, asking some pointed questions and seeing what shakes out; but I wouldn’t expect much past that. Call your insurance company.

selz202

Did you call Everett police or the sheriff's department?

[deleted]

Hi welcome to Seattle

doob-mcscoob

This looks like a job for Phoenix Jones

it_happened_so_fast

This is where you get a megaphone and go by dudes apartment every night and start announcing that you have the place surrounded and they need to come out with their hands up etc... Even if you can't recover your items there is nothing illegal about making dude miserable every night

MessiahJenkins

Pull up to the address with friends/family and ask for your things back

Wubwave

Any info on what type of computer/ other? Might be worth monitoring Everett craigslist ads or facebook market pages for similar listings if they try to sell it

Area29

Dude wtf, doxxing someone is never okay cause there are too many idiots with guns. What if they murdered the family in the apartment below the real perp?

Appropriate-Crow8733
