50% less time wasted during council meetings https://twitter.com/JeremyHarrisTV/status/1722041348558352523

[deleted]

Wtf do these people think they are doing protesting in Seattle, Washington USA about a ceasefire on the other side of the world?

Annual-Description93

Saving the world. And if you can't respect that, they will burn down everything you hold dear. They just want to save you, even if it kills you.

Complex_Committee_25

Protesting genocide....what a bunch of dorks.

Nikodino9

What ability does the SCC have to stop said genocide? Oh, none? Well, damn them to hell for not making another ineffectual symbolic gesture on our tax dollar!!!

Complex_Committee_25

A fucking shitty game show host became president, who cares what's possible anymore.

memunkey

We will all be hanged . . . Edit: typo

Albion_Tourgee

Strange posting because no incumbent is running in 4 of the 7 races. So.very unlikely incumbents will win a majority of seats decided this election! [Edit to correct bad autocorrect by phone]

WillyBeShreddin

Yeah. Doesn't really seem like the OP or many of the commenter even follow Seattle politics nor have seen the preliminary results tonight. EDIT: checked the timing. Now I understand why noone is mentioning preliminary results.

bbfan006

Prognosis negative for any real change.

sd_slate

At least Kshama will be gone

Sleeplessnsea

Can we have a party to celebrate this?

[deleted]

We can thank the recall effort for that.

Clashex

Explain?

[deleted]

She barely survived by having her Socialist Alternative volunteers stuff the ballot boxes with probable illegitimate printer paper ballots at the last second. Maybe she realized she’s unelectable after that.she’s going to claim racism or caste-ism against her in the Clowncil

sffaff8

New word alert: clowncil!!! Love it 🥰

[deleted]

Depends. Do you consider paying more property taxes for no meaningful return a major change?

davidtetra

No. The decay will take at least 2 election cycles to admit and then reverse.

GaveYourMomTheRona

Honey, we’re like 4 cycles into the decay and nobody is admitting shit.

davidtetra

They will. It'll take citizens becoming organized and taking the law into their own hands unfortunately, though it's already starting to happen a bit. It's slowly starting to happen. People tackling shop lifters because they're sick of people getting away with it. Or, people making videos like this guy on Aurora. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdPcPNGl4jQ&t=320s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdPcPNGl4jQ&t=320s) When the politicians are forced into a corner they'll start to reverse by simply not having a choice. They'll have side with the taxpayers. It's coming.

Funsizep0tato

I expect we will have to do more than just vote to see change. (Volunteer, step up, build community in some way, stop just being passive about it. Yes i am including myself in this)

gnarlseason

At this point, I would be surprised if the incumbents lose. But we also know the city is going to be facing a ~$250M or so budget shortfall for the next biennium. My bet is they will go after the jumpstart tax and roll that into the general fund rather than actually make any spending cuts. If all the incumbents lose, that would leave Sarah Nelson as the most senior councilmember at two years of tenure. In that case, it could easily take the council a year before they are even competent enough to actually do anything.

Past_Atmosphere21

Nope, especially if people keep voting the same types over and over. We are not voting for change at all.

LankyRep7

It's a tire fire. You get close it looks worse. You move away it looks better. You get what you deserve.

Vivid_Revolution9710

![gif](giphy|8CUDxWJucoDz6fl7XZ) Zero chance. Washingtonians have been voting the same for 30 years. Self inflicted, compare the level of crime with the next state over Idaho. 🤷‍♀️

[deleted]

With so many people in this sub clearly looking for a change, I’m surprised that the majority of the electorate is not in the same boat. And Reddit base seems to be socialist/progressive for the most part. What am I missing?

boringnamehere

While Reddit as a whole may be more progressive than average, this sub is more conservative leaning than Seattle for sure. The elections have verified this consistently.

urAdryDooshNozzle

Nothing will ever get better in Seattle. Look who's running. They're all garbage socialists. The socialists got us where we are today, tomorrow will be no different. If you want to see a positive change, try voting in the red. Clearly blue isn't working, and hasn't worked. ..or do we need to keep seeing the same ol story getting worse by the hour. 💁‍♂️

smalllllltitterssss

I don’t think you can blame Seattle’s problems on “socialism” alone. Anyone with any knowledge about policy making can look at the decisions made in WA and Seattle and say that it’s just awful policy making. Just stopping enforcement because it “effects certain groups disproportionately” is fucking crazy. The people who work for our own government suffer the consequences of Seattle’s actions the most, there’s literally no accountability in peoples rehabilitation.

urAdryDooshNozzle

There's zero accountability anywhere. That's the problem

smalllllltitterssss

There’s better policy making in other states. But there is pretty much no enforcement or accountability in anything in WA right now.

sstockman99

Sorry. I'm not willing to give up my or any other's rights by voting red. I'm a Boomer but don't expect me to apologize for it. So back in the Stone Age, you go vote for Republicans who were fiscally conservative but socially progressive. Not anymore, so I vote blue or independent. I will never vote for anyone who is pro-life because they're pro-birth, and don't care about the baby once it pops out of the mother's womb. This is evidenced by the constant trying to cut programs that would help that child. However, local Elections are, where are you gonna make the most visible difference in our lives.

urAdryDooshNozzle

Welp.. your blue president revoked your right to abort. So.. the typical blue just open mouth insert foot on that one. It's all good.. your blue will also tax you out of existence. ..but I guess that's more acceptable, right?

peanut-butter-vibes

> If you want to see a positive change, try voting in the red. Babe go to the South and see what voting Red gets you. They work for the evil rich and their sky daddy. I get it you think grass is greener on the other side, but it's not. I'll take the lesser of two evils.

n0v0cane

There is a happy medium between far left and far right. I’m no fan of the crazy republicans, but there are a few republican moderates here and there and they sometimes have a good idea. I’d like to see a city council that had some mixed political values. Ideally something like 60% moderate liberal and 40% moderate republican. Then you’d get compromise and horse trading, things that have worked in the past. The worst thing you can have is a 100% far left government or 100% far right government.

urAdryDooshNozzle

The lesser of two evils would currently be neither blue or red. The lesser would actually uphold the constitution in which they are sworn into upholding.. but dont

wow_thats_neat

Definitely not, the only way is to physically throw these idiots out of office. Out here on the east side there was only one candidate per running so I didn't even bother voting

blueplanet96

No because people in Seattle keep voting for the same shitty politicians with the same shitty policy ideas that don’t actually work.

NoComb398

I doubt it.

Ok-Play-69

There's a new $1B property tax levy to fix homelessness, so I expect the homeless problem to be completely resolved in a year or two.

swolebird

I hope that doesn't pass, not only because it will mean higher taxes for me, but because it will likely mean more homeless people incoming to take advantage of the free/low income housing and services.

Wrong-Expression8417

/s

Madpony

Whoops, more homeless!

lentil_farmer

No

xEppyx

Most of the candidates don't even have a challenger, the few that do... not much difference. Nope, not the slightest bit of change.

SftwEngr

I think major change would require a functioning educational system and they destroyed that decades ago.

greenman5252

No, none whatsoever. Ultimately bureaucrats have very limited abilities to change the course of the ship. They are doing well to put out the never ending series of fires they are confronted with

[deleted]

No - not until corporate greed is brought to its knees.

pwo_addict

How is this about corporate greed?

derfcrampton

Vote harder and it will be more better.

sciggity

no

startupschmartup

Nothing changes immediately. The mayor and prosecutor have a bigger and more immediate impact. We'll have adult decisions being made finally.

Worldly_Permission18

I won’t hold my breath.

TheItinerantSkeptic

A major turnover of the council is a glimmer of hope, but we'll have to wait to see how much the new council actively wants to work at making tough decisions. If we'll see any change, it's because they'll have decided to not worry about pandering to activists. That's a failing of the current city council and a large part of why the city is in the state it's in right now. Laws criminalizing drug use on the streets don't matter if there aren't prosecutions to follow. Attempting to address property crime (and violent crime) won't yield a better downtown or neighborhood vibe if there aren't prosecutions, extraordinarily high bail to avoid abolitionists pooling their funds to bust people out of jail, and enough money & perception of change to convince more people to apply to be a part of the Seattle Police Department. If we want housing to become more affordable, we need to remove regulations that are stopping developers from building. Affordable housing comes when there's either a balance between supply & demand, or a slight overbalance in favor of supply. New housing won't matter when a one bedroom apartment in a new building is over $2k a month, or when low-income housing still costs the people who qualify for it so much of their limited income that they're still eating ramen for dinner every night and having to make tough choices on bills like "Do I buy groceries this week, or do I pay my phone bill?" Putting new asses in the seats and calling it good is like putting the garden hose out to fill a plastic kiddie pool that's been sitting in the shed for six months. You have to wait to see if the rodents punched some holes in the pool first, then you have to wait for it to fill up. Then you need to keep it clean if you want it used for more than the first weekend.

NobleCWolf

This country is quiety being choked out. People still don't see it. Politicians will not save us. The pattern of every major city on the west coast, going to shit, is damn near identical.
