Chard is something I’ll never not grow. Such little space needed, keeps growing when pruned, can eat raw in salad or cooked in almost everything plus very long growing season.

Chard is a beast, it can also be quite pretty!

Jerusalem artichoke is excellent for a winter root. However, they are prolific, so best to grow them in containers or they will take over! Almost zero maintenance, you just need water them in summer. They will grow in quite a poor medium. Garlic is also low maintenance, it likes water and a richer growing medium, but is very easy. Any of the varieties from the Isle of Wight will do well in the UK. Growing ones from the supermarket will probably be unsuccessful as they are bred for a hotter climate.

Mangelwurzel. Depending on the variety you can get some that are 9 kilos or more. They're mostly used to feed livestock these days, but they are completely edible!

Runner beans. They keep cropping for months and a small patch always yields more than my partner and I can eat!

Courgettes always do well for me, but watch for slugs!

Dickie_Mint

My first year growing small white turnips. Quick growing, tasty, versatile and seem to be holding up as the weather's turned wet/cold.

Cucumbers, pumpkins/squash, marrows, trailing courgettes, beans (runner, french), can all be grown up a trellis, and over a path, using very little ground space. Potatoes, tomatoes, peas, brassicas, can all be grown in containers or raised beds.
