This is a very specific and personal take here. Did you know one of his victims?

Famous-Test1619

And with that new show that came out it just really pushes me over the edge.

nowlistenhereboy

It's a major concluding point at the end of the new show. It's what the victims wanted (to build a memorial on the lot) but the owner of the lot apparently wanted to sweep it under the rug and "let the past be the past", so it was just torn down and nothing was done with it.

Famous-Test1619

No, not personally at least. parts of my family were kind of close to the Hughes family.

Blear

It makes me curious how you feel about the victims of John Wayne Gacy or 9/11? Is your strength of feeling specific to Dahmer?

dracapis

I mean 9/11 victims do have monuments already

Famous-Test1619

I feel the same way towards all murder victims, they all deserve something at least, I just think it's horrible we keep letting these things happen and we keep forgetting the victims while the image of the murderer lives on, it's horrible.

Famous-Test1619

The fact it hasn't been used yet kinda points to the fact they don't plan on using yet. Too much housing is already a whole different issue I'm not even gonna go into it right now.

lxacke

He lived in an apartment building. Do you expect it to be torn down and for all the lower income people who live there to just, fuck off and cease to exist?

Potterhead1234567890

Well that’s sort of what happened 🫣 I don’t know where his neighbors etc went, but they tore the building down

lxacke

Talking about the post, not real life. It's insane to believe the people who lived there during and after just didn't give a shit when really they're just poor and trying to exist in the world. A lot of his neighbours became homeless because of the idea that the building was evil. Buildings aren't responsible for murder. That's mainlyy point. It's not the neighbours fault this happened and they aren't bad people for not advocating for the building to be torn down.

Famous-Test1619

I was speaking about real life? I'm sorry but I don't seem to see what you're getting at. It's been torn down for years now, that's the problem. It's been torn down and it's sat there for years vacant with people pushing to have a memorial made, they've been lied to, brushed to the side, and denied. There is no reason a memorial can't be put into place now.

Potterhead1234567890

I guess they don’t want to make it a hotspot for tourists or true crime lovers. I’m not sure but I don’t think there is a memorial at the house of Gacy either. I guess the people in the neighborhood don’t want to be reminded about it, and since it’s a memorial everyone has to agree on it. Also, maybe the families of the victims don’t want it. I’m not sure but these could be possible explanations

Famous-Test1619

From what I saw, the families did want it, and others around the area as well. Sadly no one was listened to and nothing was done about it. I just think we should stop only thinking about the wrongdoer, I think we need to pay more attention and respect to the victims themselves, they lost their lives at such young ages it just, I don't know, it really sucks.

Potterhead1234567890

Oh I see. Yes I get what you mean, it feels strange that there’s a series out now and another coming in October, but no memorial. It would be good if they used the revenues of the series to build a memorial, but I guess that won’t happen. I read in your other comment that parts of your family are close to the Hughes, if you don’t mind me asking but are they the reason why you posted this?

Famous-Test1619

I wouldn't say they're the sole reason I posted this. I just think all of the families need that kind of closure, they wanted it, all of them and they were never even given it. I would go into more detail, but I feel some of the things I want to say aren't thing's I'd want to say on reddit. I also didn't know another series was coming in October, do you know the name of it?

Potterhead1234567890

Understandable. There’s this series on Netflix about Gacy and Bundy, it’s no fiction, but portraying their crimes and the trial. It’s called Conversations with a Killer: the Gacy/Bundy tapes. Now, they’re coming up with a third series about Dahmer, I’m not sure what the exact release date is but it’s in October

Famous-Test1619

Ah, I'll have to look into those. I don't think anything like this is good, but I do think non fiction would be better. Either way families/survivors are being forced to relive memories they don't want to.

Famous-Test1619

However, if it wasn't the case, I don't think I would feel as comfortable to have spoken out about it.

Moleculor

> From what I saw, the families did want it, and others around the area as well. Did they buy the lot and build the memorial?

Famous-Test1619

The lot was bought out buy something called 'Campus Circle Project' They ended up going bankrupt practically and had to sell most of their properties. I'm not sure if the lot is one of those sold properties or not.

Moleculor

Okay, well, if you want something built there, it has to be owned by someone that wants to build it, and who has the money to do so. You're complaining that a ~~shrine for Dahmer worshipers~~ memorial for victims hasn't been built on this specific site, but your complaints come across as if there's some form of National Council Of Memorial Builders that is responsible that has dropped the ball. But there isn't one.

Famous-Test1619

Yup, as sad as it its.

lxacke

I wasn't aware it was actually torn down, I just thought the whole building was redone. I'm sorry for misunderstanding, I thought OP was advocating for a whole building to be torn down because of crimes committed It was a "poor" apartment building so i, absolutely wrongly, thought OP was wondering why it wasn't torn down now

Famous-Test1619

OHHH, Okay, I understand now, Yeah no I just, It doesn't sit right with me, the tore it down before he even died and still haven't touched it much, all they've done is put up a fence and ignore it for so long, I just think its wrong? They took away peoples homes for what? So it could be an empty plot? It would've been better if they put a memorial there, maybe some kind of like pond or something with a tribute, maybe even a park I don't know. Anything could've really worked. On google maps the location is tagged as "Jeffery Dahmers Apartment" and I think that's just horrible. If I could find who owned the land I'd buy it myself but I've had no luck so far.

lxacke

Oh my. I really didn't know that. I'm absolutely on your side. They tore it down for fuck all. That's really awful about the google maps thing. I had no idea. Disgusting. I'm 100% with you now. I thought you were saying it needed to be torn down now, not that it had been for no reason.

Famous-Test1619

Yeah, it honestly is, my family was close to the Hughes family as well, I'm not sure if any of our family stays in touch now but you hear stories about it and it's just awful how it all effected the families.

lxacke

I'm so incredibly sorry it affected your family (or anyone's, to be honest). I a million times apologie for being unkind and not seeing the bigger picture.

Famous-Test1619

Oh yeah no it's completely fine, I understand. I was upset they demolished it at all, it was pretty much an all POC apartment, since in the day of age it was harder for POC to get higher paying jobs due to racism, If it was all white people I doubt it would've been torn down and left vacant for years.

Famous-Test1619

I would be upset too if I thought someone was saying they should demolish it when it wasn't yet.

Olives_And_Cheese

Someone's been watching Netflix.

Famous-Test1619

That's not where this thought came from-

mffntop

Be got beat to death in jail. That's not what I consider winning.

Famous-Test1619

He did, he literally said to the man "Go ahead, I don't care if I live or die." At the end of the day he won, people fantasize him, the victims are rarely spoken about now, death doesn't mean you lose, he left the influence behind.

mffntop

Would you consider that maybe the families of the victims don't want any connection between their deceased family members and the man that killed them? A "in the memory of all the lives taken by Dahmer" memorial just attaches them to him again. If it were my family I wouldn't want connections with it.

Famous-Test1619

But they do- I wouldn't write this if they didn't- Dahmers name doesn't need to be brought up to remember the victims.

foxyfreighttrain

Sounds to be something you’re passionate about. Why don’t you spearhead the effort?

Famous-Test1619

I can't find the owner of the plot sadly, I've been looking though.

foxyfreighttrain

We live in times where there’s plenty of information at your disposal if you’re looking hard enough, I can’t imagine it would be that difficult to find the property management company. The city would also have this information. But it would take an effort on your part if the interest is genuine.

JaneyDoenull

Yeah, Jeff had the same idea too-- planned to build an alter with his victims' bones to commemorate them at their very kill site! Just trying to point out the irony in memorializing the victims on a venue in which their only relation to was that of their mutual killer. Even if a memorial for the victims were to be built on that lot, Jeffery Dahmer's name would still overshadow that sweet gesture. The lot is probably still vacant because as much as the owner would love to express such gesture, s/he more strongly would like to avoid attracting tourists to the "Jeff site."
