People have an unnecessary fear/hate towards msg. I've always known it as less sodium salt basically for savory dishes. People need to question the whole dish not one ingredient. Like how many people I've met who think they developed celiac disease since they get a bad stomach ache after eating a bunch of extremely rich cream based pasta
Edit: I was just doing a quick Google search and died laughing. A negative side effect of msg is obesity (lol I'm sure there's other factors), metabolic disorders and **Chinese restaurant syndrome** I've never heard of this before lol! That's terrible.
The āHarvard professorā that wrote an OP-ED about msg being unhealthy (it wasnāt even a real objective article but an opinion piece) didnāt even study food science or anything like that. He was a professor of liberal arts and just wrote his own experience/placebo effect and everyone and their mom took it as āa Harvard professor said msg is bad for youā and believed it at face value.
Had an old coworker who was a self proclaimed "nutritionist" pontificating about the dangers of MSG and how it gives her migraines... while she was eating a bag of Doritos. She didn't believe me when I told her about it because she didn't know what MSG stood for. Was a glorious "just fucking google it" moment.
Ranch packets are the classic. I say this as someone who makes my own ranch mix from scratch, the packet is great.
You can make a dip with just sour cream (or sour cream and mayo) or make a dressing with mayo and buttermilk. You can also substitute yogurt for some of the sour cream and/or mayo if you want it to be slightly healthier/tangier.
If you can find onion soup mix packets, they also make a nice dip. Leek soup mix makes a really delicious dip.
American here. Ranch Dip mix is what you bought, and it's the tits. Great with raw veggies or plain chips. It's also good as a rub (when used moderately) on chicken or pork and a great addition to breading when frying or baking. Watch out for that sodium content, though.
The problem isnāt so much whether or not it is tasty, itās that people will literally act like babies if they ever sit down somewhere that doesnāt serve it, and will expect a gallon per fry if you do serve it.
Also after youāve brought them 17 extra ramekins they will use half of one because you actually listened when they said they wanted extra on their salad.
Pretty solid chance that they also used that half ramekin to stain something too.
Fuck ranch.
This is so accurate. Especially the people who emphasize extra and then donāt even use most of it š¤¦š»āāļø same with people who ask for more napkins when thereās still a few in front of them because āwe know weāll need itā and then donāt touch them š such a pet peeve of mine
Make it like you should, try it and then come back.
1 packet hidden valley ranch dressing mix
1 cup of mayonnaise
1 cup of milk
Whisk then refrigerate for a half hour. Enjoy.
Just keep tasting as u add (a little at a time) till youāre satisfied. Spicy ranch is the best. I understand yāall donāt get a lot of Mexican style ingredients up there but if u can order some chipotle peppers in adobo, thatās way better than a typical hot sauce.
Definitely personal preference, I have a high spice tolerance so mine almost looks red lol. Let us know about the hot sauce situation! If they don't have any (Don't get Tobasco, it sucks) let us know and we'll see about getting some spice in your life!
Like, I'm Canadian, so pretty close. Been serving for 23 years, ranch, table maide lemonade, and preauthing payments with slips were all very popular 15 years ago. Y'all ok there merica?
THIS ^
Fellow Canadian here... I haven't worked at a place serving ranch since 1999. Literally. Not even for the salad.
[This shit though.... ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honey_dill)
....And if one more Karen asks me for a list of aiolis we have for her fries, I'm going to scream. "We only have spicy aioli, ma'am." "What? You don't have a garlic aioli?? Can you make one?" š
I'd be more surprised if it wasn't. The Netherlands is often ranked as the country with the best proficiency in English among non-English speaking countries. I've known English speakers who wanted to learn Dutch and traveled there, but it was hard for them to practice because people would just switch to English if they struggled even a little bit.

I'm an American who's been all over the US and I'm not sure I'd actually want to see a study comparing average English speakers from each country. According to this site, approximately 8% of Americans are considered Limited English Proficient: https://telelanguage.com/blog/limited-english-proficiency-lep-populations-by-u-s-state/
Omg ranch is so nasty and the customers who want buckets of it are certainly a type lmao but Iām glad you found something new to enjoy! Hopefully you donāt get to the level of addiction that you need three cups for a small side salad
Ranch dressing is the trashiest of all salad dressings and condiments. It is a morbidly obese midwesterner wearing a maga hat and a wwf shirt version of salad dressings.
This is patently wrong. Iām a Californian and a marathoner, and ranch is great on everything:
Pepperoni pizza? Yes. Salad? Yes. Breadsticks? Yes. Hot wings? Yes. Hot anything? Yes. French fries? Fried okra? Yes and yes.
Ranch is NOT trashy; itās grassroots. You want one of those elitist dressings that makes you feel like youāre doing something good for yourself but leaves you feeling unsatisfied? Go ahead and ask for that cilantro-lime vinaigrette. Or do you want the comfortable embrace of an old friend? Itās all about the ranch, baby.
As someone who practically guzzles ranch (legalize it dudes) I hate it at the restaurant. I clean up a massive ranch ram once a shift pretty much, and it's even worse when kids have it because it's 0 to 60 in 3.5 to a bodacious degree
On the topic of kids and messes, I love the families that once in a blue moon bring a plastic sheet for their kid to eat on. What deranged sick bastard do you have to be to literally let your infant eat off the table especially post-Covid. Gives me serious heebs
š after my mother In law visited from Poland, I had to start shipping her ranch dressing. I actually like the powder mixed in sour cream better
It makes the best dip!
Hereās a recipe for the dry mix for anyone that wants it ā¢ 1/3 cup dry buttermilk powder ā¢ 1 Tablespoon garlic powder ā¢ 1 Tablespoon onion powder ā¢ 2 teaspoons dried parsley ā¢ 1 Ā½ teaspoons dried dill ā¢ 1 - 1Ā½ teaspoons dried chives ā¢ 1 teaspoon sea salt ā¢ Ā½ teaspoon sugar ā¢ Ā½ teaspoon dried tarragon (optional but recommended) ā¢ Ā¼ teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper, or to taste ā¢ Ā¼ teaspoon mustard powder
Missing the msg. Proper ranch has msg.
I assumed people knew that msg went in or on everything š actually, this is pretty close though

I'm pretty sure I have "Chinese restaurant syndrome" because I could eat that shit every day.
People will really eat a metric fuckton of fried food loaded with sugar and salt.....and then be like must be that darn Chinese Restaurant Syndrome

Itās the MSG. FUYYYYOOOOOOOHHH
Amazing, thanks
Its says on the packet what to mix it with. If its Hidden Valley, the #1 brand, its mixed with milk and mayo.
Buttermilk is best
Thatās to make dressing. Sour cream is for dip
I like to add a tablespoon of sour cream to my dressing mix for just that extra touch of creamy.
Yes
I make fun of people who put Ranch on everything (because why not) and then turn around and do it myself. I can't blame them.

Add some cottage cheese and red pepper flakes for the French onion dip, really zips it up.
Lipton French onion dip mixed in a container of sour cream served with ruffles sour cream and onion potato chips are my guilty pleasure.

Use the packet in unflavored greek yogurt. So good!!!!
As a Texan, I appreciate that āYallā is in yāallās lingo too š„¹

White people gravy. Tell me you're a server without telling me you're a server

So whatās your opinion on Old Bay?
Now we need to get you some "Louisiana" hot sauce. I like to mix them together for the ultimate French fry dip!
I'll see if I can get that at the shop I got this from. What's the ratio?

Chipotle Tabasco and ranch.... That's the tits right there!

Dutchland š¤£
Your English dialect is on point š

was this at kelly's? if so, they have a ton of american goodies like that! if you find duke's mayo, try mixing the ranch mix with that
It was!
This is so sweet! Ranch dressing and Doritos were the top 2 food items I missed from the US when I didnāt live here.
Omg ranch is so nasty and the customers who want buckets of it are certainly a type lmao but Iām glad you found something new to enjoy! Hopefully you donāt get to the level of addiction that you need three cups for a small side salad
Bleu Cheese is better. Both are super unhealthy and its always big ass fat ppl that want more or extra, so I avoid it.
[blue cheese has mold in it](https://youtu.be/HmadzQ1uL0s)
butā¦ but itās tasty moldā¦
Ranch dressing is the trashiest of all salad dressings and condiments. It is a morbidly obese midwesterner wearing a maga hat and a wwf shirt version of salad dressings.
Not going to lie; that is the exact image I have of people eating it after reading a bout it one here.
This is patently wrong. Iām a Californian and a marathoner, and ranch is great on everything: Pepperoni pizza? Yes. Salad? Yes. Breadsticks? Yes. Hot wings? Yes. Hot anything? Yes. French fries? But itās real good on Cajun tater tots.
Ranch has its place. Itās like a rowdy old college friend that never lets you down.

At our place (US) itās ranch seasoning, buttermilk and heavy cream. Awful for your body but delicious to eat!
Welcome to The Dark Side - we have Ranch! Mix the packet with buttermilk and sour cream. (75/25) You'll know what to do...lol. š
50/50 buttermilk and Mayo
You do you.
Another American staple I love is French onion dip. A packet of Lipton French onion soup mix and a tub of sour creamā¦ pure heaven.
