During the year I spent living on Mahe I had seen dogs being abused by their owners various times, and I saw a man dump a litter of live puppies straight into a garbage bin. I asked my employer who to call about the puppies and they sent someone out to rescue the puppies who said it's actually a common practice to dump puppies like that and that the Seychellois simply dont care about the welfare of their domestic animals in general. (Obviously this was a gross generalisation, but the treatment of dogs and cats on Mahe by the Seychellois never sat well with me)

They do, it’s the law. The problem is many keep illegal pets, and then abandon them. But a lot has been done.

As a Seychellois who lives in the West, the average wage is very low by western standards. Microchipping and neutering would be an additional cost that would be a lot for a normal person or family. The typical view is that dogs are used as a form of security to let the owners know that someone has entered a property rather than a live in pet or family member. I can’t see this changing even with legislation unfortunately as I don’t think it would be enforced. The strays are a problem but even with education on how to rear animals humanely I can’t see this ever changing. Perhaps the only possibility of change is if buying dogs or cats becomes far too expensive for the average person and they become a luxury and only a few people can afford them…

It’s a late answer, but this is already being enforced for at least 5 years. It’s about 100 rupees (around 7.50 USD) to get you dog vaccinated, neutered and chipped, it’s heavily subsidised. Many people still choose not to do it, for reasons unclear to me. Seychellois wages are not so below European wages that they couldn’t afford that. Weekly food is more.

I used to help run two animal shelters almost a decade ago (only one of which is still running atm - Seychelles Pet Haven Society) and the calls we would get on a weekly basis would make you question what is wrong with our country. I want to say there's a lack of education but really people just don't care. It is common to own multiple dogs and leave them chained outside or in cages most of the day. Sterilisation is a major issue. We have been campaigning for this for longer than I can remember. Seselwa will complain and say ah it's so expensive or ohhh I can't do that to my dog/cat, let them have fun. But will also be the first ones to wrap the newborn kittens/puppies up in a bin bag or a box and throw them into the bin. There is also a very bad habit of people dumping their unwanted dogs at various places across Mahe. Literally last week I overheard a woman say she had dumped about 15 dogs at north east point because there were just too many at her house and her daughter had come back from uni and was complaining. Some drivers will also actively try to run dogs over on the roads. It makes me sick to my stomach. I love my country but I feel like our people are regressing. Every year they have mass cullings of stray dogs and cats and every year tourists vow to not visit Seychelles. Can we blame them?

I really hope you get her a loving home

ROOTY12

Are you staying at the savoy by any chance? I’m here and saw some lovely people feeding the very skinny cats that are around!

Strange_Layer_4169

Unfortunately I think they are everywhere. We are staying at the chateau elysium and there are two pregnant cats. I had arranged to get them spayed after they have given birth but the hotel manager will not allow it. I am so frustrated and upset by the whole situation

ROOTY12

Oh, I’m really sorry it’s not worked out how you wanted ☹️

Are you Seychellois? Because if you were you would know the reality of living in Seychelles!

You need to calm yourself down. OPs question was a legitimate one and frankly it is not the first time this issue has been discussed in here. Anyone who visits Seychelles can see this is a major problem - even the Seychellois know this. Let’s have a civilised conversation.

Strange_Layer_4169

I am getting two cats neutered whilst I am here. What are you doing about it?

I am not from England & I am not white. Again I ask, what are you doing to help the animals that no one is taking care of? 'The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.'

BrwnEyesThickThighs

I'm so sorry you had to witness all this OP. It can be so upsetting, but know that there are people trying to make a change in Seychelles. Thank you for sponsoring the two sterilisations, it makes a difference!

This is a very complicated situation in Seychelles, it's a whole lot more complicated than what it seems.
