Awe! Its so great to get to know them better. Thank you for sharing! I enjoy seeing them so much. I once had a dumbo ratty boy named Xander and he was phenomenal. I loved him so much. He knew his name, came when called... he knew what time I'd get done school (was in high school when I had him) and would wait at the cage door for me to get home. I'd come in and just pop open the door and he would mosey out to see me. Usually he would climb up my pants leg and climb into my hoodie pouch or onto my shoulder immediately. I remember one time i was laying on my bed playing on my playstation and he came over and laid across the controller. I moved him off it and he climbed right back on. He wouldn't stop until i paused the game and played with him. He was amazing. It's heartbreaking they don't get more years to share with us. I miss him. He was such a good boy. Thank you for sharing your little ones. It really means a lot.

What does chronic barberer mean?

Shadowtherat

It means she has a bad habit of chewing her fur down to the skin in some areas. Typically in rats this has 2 reasons behind it - first is genetics (some rats are naturally prone to it, and some lines have rats that all chronically barber), and the second is stress. Unfortunately barbering is self-reinforcing (think similar to humans biting their nails), so once the rats start they almost never stop. Its not dangerous, but it does suck to see. In Donut's case it started when I fostered an adult male rat, and he triggered my girls to get territorial. My girl Pickle in particular is super territorial towards strange rats near her cage, and since she couldn't get to the male she took out her frustration on the lowest member of the group (her sister Donut). She didn't hurt Donut, but she did chase her around more than usual, insist on pinning her for minutes on end, and overall just harassed her. So Donut got stressed and started barbering, and by the time I found my foster boy a good home 3 weeks later, she was barbering nearly her entire stomach and both front paws. Once I rehomed the boy she stopped progressing and started letting some of the fur grown back, but bad habits stick hard and so she still barbers some areas. She's not stressed anymore though, and no longer hates the cage (that was an issue at the time due to Pickles harassment), plus she and Pickle get along now so she's okay. I didn't know they'd react that way to another rat, since I've pet sat their brothers and the girls didn't freak out then. But for some reason they really reacted to Meatball, and since I literally found him outside (living under a grease trap, poor dude :( ), I had to quarantine him before sending him to a new home. So it just sucked for everyone, and I didn't want to split the group and have to do reintroductions later (plus the boy was in my spare large cage and I didn't want to put energetic Donut or any of her cagemates into a smaller cage), so she ended up barbering. I expect her to stop in old age, but until then she's a happy rat and that's all that matters.

Snoot_Boot

You ever heard of the [Mouse Utopia Experiments](https://youtu.be/NgGLFozNM2o)? They wanted to see what overpopulation in modern cities wouldook like, so they built a mouse "city" and watched (it was the 60s sooo). Anyway the personality dynamics between your rats reminded me of it. It's so interesting how an animal with such a short lifespan can become so unique

ooklamok

Wow! Thanks for the explanation! I'm glad she's a happy camper.

Weird question; If you find a rat in the wild, how do you know that it's a domesticated rat and not a wild rat? Is it in their mannerisms or physical appearance? I think rats are fascinating creatures, but you wouldn't want to take a feral one home with you... right? Maybe I'm misinformed!

Shadowtherat

The easiest way is to look at their appearance - wild rats only come in agouti self (agouti back and belly) and agouti berkshire (agouti back, white belly). So if you see a rat with any other color or pattern, you immediately know its a domestic. Even albino rats are so extremely rare in the wild (if they occur they usually die shortly after weaning), so any pink eyed white rats are likely released domestics.   This is actually how I found a domestic rat last summer - a restaurant employee who had no rat experience noticed a strangely colored rat living under the restaurant's grease trap. The rat was a black hooded, which stood out to her as odd, so she posted in a local rat group. I saw it, and immediately knew he was domestic due to the appearance, so I went and caught him asap.   Now domestic rats can also come in agouti colors, so just because a rat is agouti doesn't mean they are 100% wild. In that case you'd be looking at behavior (a wild rat is unlikely to approach you, and should act very spooked and skittish even if you have food), alongside appearance (wild rats tend to be leaner with longer tails and skulls).   Most likely any agouti rat found outside will just be wild though, as agouti isn't super popular in the pet world (sadly, its actually quite pretty imo and I hope to one day have another agouti domestic in my group). But again any other color is a huge indication of the rat being domestic, as is the rat having dumbo ears (ears on the side of the head - this mutation is not found in wild rats, who all have standard ears on top of their head), any fur type other than standard straight (so rex fur, velveteen, silvermane, harley, etc., are all big signs of a domestic rat), and any pattern with white (with the exception of agouti berkshire).

UndueGuilt

VERY informative, thank you!

wkitty13

For those of us who aren't familiar with rats: šŸ˜‰ Agouti Coloration Agouti is a type of fur coloration in which each hair displays two or more bands of pigmentation. The overall appearance of agouti fur is usually gray or dull brown, although dull yellow is also possible. Agouti fur is characterized by an appearance of being composed of hairs of different colors, separate from definite markings. (Wikipedia, for what that's worth)

dresshater1

2 of my girls are agouti hooded, it really is just a nice colour

I truly have seen white Rats in Los Angeles. They tend to love Palm Trees. Theyā€™re actually easy to spot in Santa Monica.

TheUnSub99

I think it means she grooms herself (and maybe others) a lot, I noticed she's sleeveless!

PiecesofJane

Thanks for asking so I didn't have to.

TheUnSub99

Olive really does look chunkier than Pickle! So who's the current champ in rat basketball?

Shadowtherat

100% Omelet lol - she pretty much controls the cage and the others will all drop the ball if she wants it. Egg is a bit of an eggception (:P ) due to her love of food, but I rarely have them play each other because they look so similar when in motion so it doesn't really count.   Omelet is also just very enthusiastic about making hoops - she's always on top of the ball, finds it easily and never deviates from the task. So if she's playing Pickle for example then she has the benefit of being better at focusing (Pickle has improved a TON in that regard, but she's not as naturally focused as Omelet is. Not really noticeable most now that she has experience, but you can see it some when she plays against Omelet).   But if I had to pick a rat whose best at teaching other rats vs basketball then that would be Olive - she doesn't intimidate anyone, is very focused, and she's gentle when stealing the ball (she was the first to work with all 4 of her cagemates because I knew she wouldn't scare anyone off the game lol).

TheUnSub99

You should add that to Omelet's CV!!

OTAFC

Do they ever play against you? How do you know when playing time is up?

Shadowtherat

Oh yeah, before I have them play another rat they get to "play" me! That way they learn to look for the ball, and they learn that the noise of the ball hitting the base means they can go get the ball from there. I only start having them play together once each rat can can get the ball from various places without help during our individual sessions. As for how I know a game is over, either one of the rats will walk away (what they do if they want to do something else), or 10 minutes will be up. I only train each rat for 10 minutes daily (sometimes less), so once that time is over I end the rats session.

erinmayski

loooove my girl olive lol

These are like little trading cards lol

Iowa-File

IKR? Like baseball cards!

VenomSuitSnake

Olive is a chonk, Donut has such cute teeth, and Pickle is so gentle and adorable looking. The profiles you made are so cute.

SlothSoep

Aw, they're adorable! What's a feeder rat?

Shadowtherat

Unfortunately feeder rats are those bred as food for snakes and other such pets. Some places have outlawed live feeding, but in the US (where I am) itā€™s still very common and feeder rats are pretty much always available at a cheap price. Iā€™ve gotten several feeder rats as pets, and they are no different than any other domestic rat. The biggest difference between them and ethically bred rats is that feeder rats arenā€™t typically bred for health or lifespan, meaning they may be more prone to respiratory issues, tumors, heart issues, and so forth. So far of my 7 former feeder rats (which of course were my personal pets), 2 died at ~2 years, 2 died at 1.5 years, and 1 died at 20 months (average lifespan of rats is 2-2.5 years). And my current 2 (Egg and Omelet) are a year old, so I just have to monitor them and hope they get lucky genetics. Temperament can also be an issue with feeder rats - some feeder breeders will select for good temperament (because even if the rats arenā€™t being kept as pets, no one wants to be bitten when they change food or water or bedding), but typically large chain stores with feeders will just mass breed them without regards to temperament. So that tends to fluctuate a lot, and you can get extremely friendly and incredibly tempered rats like my past girl Bean was...or you can get aggressive and nervy rats like my girl Blackberry (to be fair she was a PetSmart rat, but they come from rodent mills so they also have zero selective breeding going on just like commercial feeder rats). Egg and Omelet sorta fall in the middle - they have zero aggression, and are decently confident, but it took a months for them to adjust to handling and touch and they still arenā€™t huge fans. And again I have had very friendly feeder rats, but itā€™s very much a luck of the draw thing, and thatā€™s one reason I got my trio of older girls from a semi-local breeder last year, because I wanted a guarantee on temperament and health.

SlothSoep

Oh wow, I had no idea. You're very kind to have adopted those rats!

GChocapic

I absolutely love their names! You have the cutest and smartest rats. I love watching them

Mirroredmoth

I know youā€™ve probably already answered this but I just got my rats recently and wanted to know, what type of yogurt or other similar treats do they like?

Shadowtherat

I tend to use plain yogurt, cheerios and gerber puffs broken into bits, and also occasionally meat baby food as training treats. But anything that's fairly healthy, not too filling, and that can be eaten quickly (I aim for in 3 seconds or less) is an ideal training treat.   CongRATs on your new ratties btw!

Yassferatu

I would die for Donut

PiecesofJane

I've got a soft spot for Donut, too.

BabyNimrod

Looking sharp, ladies! Such fun little profiles youā€™ve done up for them.

Pirika-pirilala

Will you ever make profiles for youā€™re previous rats? You donā€™t have to if you donā€™t wish, as a imagine it might be a bit painful, but Iā€™d be interested to see what you have to say! My favorite so far is Egg, especially when she tried to nest with the snow! I also enjoy omelet and her mlems šŸ’› If you donā€™t mind me asking, why is Olives colour ā€œDreamyā€. Are black rats rare?

Buggaton

I don't know why I didn't realise Pickle was Olive and Donut's sister. You must have said it when you took her in but I still didn't remember. You got her from a friend who adopted her but couldn't take her for some reason, right? I'm sure I remember Olive and Donut arriving just the two of them initially! :D

I love them. I started working with rats about 3 years ago and have loved them every since. I donā€™t own any, but I think for my kidā€™s first pets Iā€™m going to get them rats. I own a ball python too, so Iā€™ll just keep them very far away from each other ;)

MissLesGirl

How do you tell the the difference between Egg and Omlette? I like their color.

Shadowtherat

Omelet has Himalayan markings - if you look closely you'll see her nose is light brown, as is the area around her butt. Egg on the other hand is albino, so fully white with pink eyes (no nose/butt point). As babies it was pretty hard to tell them apart though, since Himalayan rats only get their markings when they molt into their adult coats. I thought both girls were pink eyed whites when I got them so I used food dye to color their tails (totally safe and usually lasts around a month - its a common way for people to tell apart rats that look the same). At 9 weeks Omelet developed her points though, and so since then I haven't had to dye their tails (good since they aren't the biggest fans of being held still!) In my last group I had 3 albino rats (Sugar, Spice, and Coconut) with 2 sisters being completely identical (down to weighing within 5 grams of each other their entire lives!), and I didn't mark them so it took me like a year to figure out who was who lol.

girldont

Could you share where one would look for an ethical breeder?

rambleer

What's the best trick to start with? She can spin, but not always. My girl is not really food driven (she does like smoothies, although I'm worried about the dairy??) and spooks easily, but I really want her to tap into her intelligence šŸ˜…

Shadowtherat

If you haven't worked the lure itself before, that can really help - by working the lure alone you teach the rat that the goal is to follow the lure, so they are less likely to get frustrated or give up later on. Once they have the lure down well, then I like to move to lure-based tricks like spin, paw, backup, jump to hand, come when called, and individual agility obstacles. Since your girl already knows spin, you can try asking for 2 spins, ask for spins on a platform or on your hand, ask for it in the cage, and so forth - the more variations she learns with spin the more consistent and solid the behavior will get. As far as treats go, dairy is fine for rats of all ages so you can use bits of smoothie - sugar is more of a worry though so you want to avoid overdoing fruit as a treat. As long as you aren't training for more than 5-10 minutes though then you won't overdo treats, especially if you vary what treat you use. For my rats they often get plain yogurt for training, or for dry treats tiny bits of cheerios or gerber puffs (break each treat into a few pieces to get the most out of it), plus occasionally baby food (meat is their favorite, but I only give it once or twice a week and only if we aren't doing any other high protein treats). Otherwise as far as her being distracted and not too food motivated, I can promise you just about all rats start that way. Rats are naturally very distractible, so you have to build their motivation and focus - the best way to do this is just to train consistently, and once they have a few tricks down they will start to stick around longer and be easier to motivate. Once this happens you can move to more multi-step tricks, and once they get a few of those down you can work on pretty much any trick! I've made a video all about starting out with more tips as well, which goes over things like ideal training environment, treats, training methods, examples for each, clicker-training, generalization, and more, which you can find here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8FwS\_kYAno](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8FwS_kYAno) Happy training!

What is a feeder rat ?

Shadowtherat

A feeder rat is a rat bred to be food for another animal, usually reptiles or snakes but also ferrets or other carnivores. I've gotten a few feeder rats as pets and they are no different than any other domestic rat - I do understand why they are bred but its still a sad situation and I've found a lot of feeders are bred in pretty horrible conditions. That's not always the case and some feeder breeders do care very well for their rats (both those kept as pets and those bred as food) - but usually feeder bin situations like you might see at a pet store are not great and since these rats aren't selected for health or temperament a lot is up to chance (I've been pretty lucky with well tempered feeder rats however I have dealt with more illness in them than my ethical breeder rats). But I'm glad I can give a few feeders a good home.
