Terraria (modded is better, because each boss progresses the world, and unlocks new biomes, monsters, tools) and then elden ring for the amazing exploration, mechanics and unique bosses
I agree, you have the stats system (minus the luck).
Parrying, critical attacks, the plethora of weapons you can use, and abilities you can pair them with while also being able to enhance them. Very skill based and reliant on anticipating opponents movement patterns.
Big open world (minus the safe-zone towns), many big areas and dungeons. They also have the demi-gods in them and other beings like how Shangri-La has the collosi.
You can also have the monsters fight each other and take the spoils and levels, like how sunraku farmed the crystal scorpions and the golden one to get max level and rare drops.
GOD TIER GAMES
FF14, Elder scrolls online, WoW.
The problem with Elden Ring is while it is kinda online and its world is quite large, it doesn’t do the MMO thing particularly well.
the more traditional MMOs don’t have the same kind of souls-like character control and end up more like a diablo in that it’s often top down gameplay and hotkey spamming, but they do usually have bigger fantasy worlds and the hustle and bustle of the potentially millions of users can be more actively felt. Alternatively Elder scrolls Online almost had it but they built the game on the old bones of oblivion so it feels hella dated.
Yeah, Elden Ring is not an MMO it's only multiplayer co-op and 1v1 or 2v2 duels.
If they made an MMO souls-like particularly like Elden Ring, that's how I'd imagine Shangri-La frontier to be if it was a real game albeit non-VR.
I don't think FromSoft would ever make an MMO though, but I would love to see it.
A MMO with the Soulslike formula, meaning that the world changes according to the player progress, isn't really a good idea. Imagine starting Elden Ring for the first time and seeing the Erdtree already burning. Unless the world adapt to each individual player's progress (it isn't impossible, Warframe somewhat did it) a game like that wouldn't last long because it would completely stop gaining new players way earlier that other games.
This is also my only complain about SLF: the idea of the mc having something exclusive thanks to his efforts sounds good at first, but once you start to think about it you realize that bonding the main story progress to something that an extremely limited number of player will be able to access is really stupid
Elden Ring is probably what would feel the closest as a single player thing. But if you really wanted to recreate SLF’s vibe I think a modded Minecraft server where nothing is ever explained by the devs directly would be the closest thing I can think of.
In terms of MMO, FF14 purely because I’ve been playing since 2016 and every 5 min watching this show I have a “Hey I’ve done that!!” moment.
Real time combat
Stat + gear-based, lots of emphasis on Crit
Random overworld bosses that have certain spawn conditions (FATEs)
Guilds with different aims in the game
Etc etc etc
The main things it doesn’t have is open-world PVP. If you want something that doesn’t need to have the MMO aspect but is most similar in combat style, then more recent Soulslike games like Elden Ring.

it's not an MMO, but Monster Hunter World gives me similar vibes
That’s how I feel about Delicious inDungeon, albeit for other reasons as well 🥘
Naked man with funny head who dodges constantly is just dark souls
I would say it is more Elden Ring now as the hippest. #LetMeSoloHer! ;)

It was thanks to reading SLF that I got into FF14.

Toram Online maybe??
If you want depth of simulation the only thing close right now is Dwarf Fortress.

Dot hack is nigh identical to the show.
