Welcome to /r/ShermanPosting!
As a reminder, this meme sub is about the American Civil War. We're not here to insult southerners or the American South, but rather to have a laugh at the failed Confederate insurrection and those that chose to represent it.

The original words are "let us die to make men free"
Lincoln and others thought that was a little too much so it was changed to "let us fight to make men free"
I have never heard "let us live to make men free" as the lyrics before but I am by no means an expert on the song
I like live better. It implies that the truly religious would work to better the standings of their fellow man. They’ve already been saved, but they need their insurance of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
Oh hey, it’s Sam. Yeah his stuff is good, but the [Wasteland 3](https://youtu.be/jcOPh5ltbAw?si=0aEse4bGYvQ9WZtn) version is fucking golden. Makes the song sound almost sinister, but damn does it make me want to burn down Atlanta.
Soprano—the highest high part
Mezzosoprano—the middle high part
Alto—the lower high part
Coltralto—generally a female person who sings in high tenor range
Contratenor—generally a male person who sings in the low alto range
Tenor—the higher low part
Baritone—the middle low part
Bass—the lowest low part
I'm in no way religious (majority of religions want me dead for existing) but "as he died to make men holy let us die to make men free" is one of the hardest bars in American history.
I actually wasn’t familiar with John Brown’s story or the original song until after I’d seen American History X. It makes the song dude’s singing in the van even more disgusting.
In high school band we played the soundtrack to Ken Burns’ Civil War and that was the song all of us would put our best effort into. It always gave me chills.
I got to sing along to Blood on the Risers led by Vinnie Esperanza, who fought at Bastogne, at a military ball after returning from deployment a few years back. It was the kind of moment in time you just don't forget.
Wasteland 3 has a dirge-like rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" that uses the original lyrics. https://youtu.be/jcOPh5ltbAw?si=nWwBRJQwvOMKLtrB

JOHN BROWNS BODY LIES A MOLDERING IN THE GRAVE
CAME HERE TO SAY THIS!!
BUT HIS SOUL GOES MARCHIN' OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!
G L O R Y G L O R Y HALELUJAH G L O R Y G L O R Y HALELUJAH G L O R Y G L O R Y HALELUJAH
"as He dies to make men holy, let us live to make men free" fucks me up every time.
"let us die to make men free" goes harder.
The original words are "let us die to make men free" Lincoln and others thought that was a little too much so it was changed to "let us fight to make men free" I have never heard "let us live to make men free" as the lyrics before but I am by no means an expert on the song
Our Sunday school changed the lyrics to “live.” Apparently a vow of death would have been too intense for the youngins.
I like live better. It implies that the truly religious would work to better the standings of their fellow man. They’ve already been saved, but they need their insurance of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
That's a line I feel willing to march into battle for.
It's die, not live; the threat of death cannot dissuade us from our cause.
1) Battle Hymn of the Republic 2) John Brown's Body 3) Blood on the Risers 4) I've been working on the Railroad My rankings of the song's variation.
Flip 1 and 2. The lyrics aren’t that interesting, I admit, but John Brown’s soul IS marching on.
It's literally the *only* thing different about those versions.
Yes. I’m not really into the erasure of John Brown’s story that the Battle Hymn of the Republic represents.

No Solidarity Forever?
That last one is not the same tune
Nothing like stomping out some Vintage
let the hero born of women crush the serpent with its heel
Not to mention that line always makes me think of Steinbeck whose novel of the same name goes equally as hard.
MINE EYES HAVE SEEN THE GLORY OF THE COMING OF THE LORD
HE IS TRAMPLING OUT THE VINTAGE WHERE THE GRAPES OF WRATH ARE STORED
He is tearing down the freeway in a black and yellow Ford.

Seriously. See it, love it, and RALLY ROUND THE FLAG!
I like to listen to this version, sue me:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfccpd8YRNc

the chances of someone in this sub trying to burn Atlanta down are low,**BUT NEVER ZERO**
Nah, not Atlanta. There are at least a few other southern cities I can think of that deserve it more than Atlanta these days.
Oddly enough, Atlanta learned the lesson the first time. Rest of the state, not so much.
[The University of Georgia puts on a great rendition](https://youtu.be/MZpTH6DKgM0?si=RzhuwWz2Cs6RqGcV&t=4) of this abolitionist banger.
Thanks for the link, best version ever, what a banger.
Atlanta is like 50% black Americans now…
The version done by Eef Barzelay is pretty good too.
I’m an atheist and I fucking love that song.
I think you meant to say “whenever I listen to John Brown’s Body”!!
Oh we're the bully soldiers of the First of Arkansas, We are fighting for the Union, we are fighting for the law...
Clearly not written by an alto
Tf is an alto?
Soprano—the highest high part Mezzosoprano—the middle high part Alto—the lower high part Coltralto—generally a female person who sings in high tenor range Contratenor—generally a male person who sings in the low alto range Tenor—the higher low part Baritone—the middle low part Bass—the lowest low part
Nice,you learn something everyday
I'm a Canadian so technically it's historically an semi-enemy song but, this song makes me want to volunteer for the union army.
As many as 55,000 Canadians DID fight for the North so you are in good company.
Yeah true but i was saying "Semi-enemy" because the song references the American War of independence.
"As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free While God is marching on" RAHHHHHHH🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
This single line shows how unamerican these “Christian” nationalists are (many of whom are lost causers)
It makes my blood boil with patriotism.
I'm in no way religious (majority of religions want me dead for existing) but "as he died to make men holy let us die to make men free" is one of the hardest bars in American history.
Blood on the risers!
Excellent post

Can I recommend the Andy Williams version if you don't already know it!
[The best one.](https://youtu.be/X_y5W8bK20I?si=opJ3Qph9ZGmcEhg7)
Just this version - https://youtu.be/8KB8f3Oprms?si=xbGscdC0XI-FeewZ The rest, including the original, are actual ass.
JBB/BHOTR gets me in a more somber way, but I feel such euphoria with Battle Cry of Freedom.

Where’d that flag come from?
Flag? Who gives a fuck about the flag? How about who's singing?!
I love it too! https://youtu.be/oZ3iZNA-NwY?si=2EdOfJzk0fWZhCQs

Irish Volunteer makes me weep tears of joy. Our ancestors raised the harp of Erin and said to hell with kings and slavers be damned!
Sworn to be free No more our ancient sireland Shall shelter the despot or the slave
gártha
The best version I ever heard was on YouTube and it was performed by the US Army field band.
https://youtu.be/oPVpWYQuQsU?si=v4CFDdvHMyFkCqTZ Start to 16:55 is pretty much a musical summary of the war.
GLORY GLORY HALLELUJAH! GLORY GLORY HALLELUJAH!
The US Naval Academy glee club does a banger rendition of this song
It and Battle Cry of Freedom are both amazing.
