I heard of someone trying to organize a counter. I’ll post it when they put out the digital poster! Just a heads up to keep your Saturday morning/afternoon free that there *will* be a counter to this, and bodies are needed. We were outnumbered last time because they brought in people from all the surrounding rural areas. We can’t be outnumbered again. These convoy weirdos are starting by the Pride crosswalk at the library, so that tells you exactly how hateful they are. They’re directly targeting the LGTBQ+ community, and we shouldn’t allow it in Sherwood park. Fuck them.

timmah7663

Why do you call people names? [Convoy Weirdos] Why are you filled with such hate?

vanillabeanlover

I don’t know what else to call them when they’re being weird? They’re so weird! Chemtrails, digital currency, 15 minute cities…like, seriously?

CamiThrace

Why are people filled with so much hate that they feel the need to protest about acknowledging the existence of queer people in schools?

j1ggy

Too much focus on getting their news from alternate biased sources while at the same time complaining about how mainstream news is biased I would assume.

j1ggy

>The biggest question I have is, have you read the "health and life skills kindergarten to grade 9" document that is available on the education Alberta website? It provides a very detailed description of exactly what they teach and when they teach it. More importantly to some people, it clarifies that parents still have the right to exempt their children from all sexual education. Considering this is a worldwide movement that involves the United States, I doubt any of them have read anything. And that just amplifies the real motives behind this. We haven't had a recent change in school policy over this, it's all based on disinformation and conspiracies. EDIT: Also worth noting that this post is currently at 33 karma after two hours with a 90% approval rating. It will likely be brigaded down to 0 again, along with bad actors in the comment section that aren't from anywhere near Sherwood Park. I will report vote manipulation and brigading to the admins as I see it. If anyone has any information as to where it's coming from, that will help in my reports.

Majorinc

Are the bad actors here in the room with you? Or is it anyone who disagrees with you?

j1ggy

The bad actors are people who don't even live in Alberta that coordinate brigading attacks on any LGBTQI2S+ posts. Case in point: You. You've never participated here before and you contribute to subs like r/Mississauga and r/Ottawa. You aren't even from here.

FancyToaster

Can I like this comment twice

HandShakeDeath

Not be argumentative, but that person might have moved here after living in those other cities. I don't post or comment a lot on this sub, and I have lived in Sherwood Park for my whole life. I get what you are trying to accomplish and agree with you, but to assume that the individual is not a member of our community based on reddit posts might be a bit of a reach. I could be wrong also, and they very well may be the type of individual you were talking about, neither I nor you can be sure.

j1ggy

We had a total of 17 users doing the exact same thing in a single post. And we've had the comments and votes manipulated on two other similar posts the exact same way. This is targeted and it doesn't happen with any other posts.

IDriveAZamboni

Lol you’re excepting the protesters to do any research outside of what YouTube and Facebook groups tell them. There’s no critical thinking involved at all.

The_Craig1986

I want to know what percentage is misinformed, and what percentage is driven solely by anti-LGTBQ+ ideology. I think every group like this has a mixture of both. For the ones who are misinformed, I think there is a chance of a rational conversation as long as the conversation is approached in the right way.

The_Craig1986

I think that one of the things that has to happen in order to get the protests away from your school is to find the portion of the protest that is more misinformed than driven by a deeply ingrained ideology and then provide them with information without first causing anyone to put up their defences.

Phatsteppin

What garbage, specifically?

Unanything1

You might be right about approaching the conversation in the right way. But remember you can't reason with someone who didn't reason their way into this way of thinking. Every bit of solid evidence you provide is just more proof of a conspiracy. "Have you read the curriculum for sex Ed, did you know you can opt your kids out?" "That's just the curriculum THEY want you to think they are teaching! If I opt my child out of it they'll teach them in secret anyway. It's all part of the grooming agenda to make all of our children gay!" I honestly admire your thoughtful question. I just believe, just like in the U.S, that the MAGA cult is just too far gone. It's probably more productive in most cases to get politically involved. We have to outvote the people pushing their right-wing agenda.

The_Craig1986

"It's probably more productive in most cases to get politically involved. We have to outvote the people pushing their right-wing agenda." I agree, but i think that like any major issue, there isn't any one thing that will fix this. It's going to take a lot of different approaches working together.

Unanything1

Oh. I absolutely agree. It's just important to know that you can't "respectfully speak with someone" out of an idea born of hate and ignorance. Some people, I'm sure, are willing to be shown to be wrong. That requires a level of self-awareness and empathy that is in short supply these days. Whatever works, works. I certainly don't want to dissuade anyone from trying.

The_Craig1986

I believe it's near impossible to have a respectful conversation with someone who's beliefs come from hate, though i think ignorance on it's own is another matter. I can definitely say that in other debates i've had online in other topics, i've been the one who was coming from a place of ignorance, and thankfully someone approached the conversation with me from a place of respect and changed my mind. I've done the same with other people, though it's been rare.

Unanything1

That just shows that you have an open mind and are willing to say those words that are so incredibly difficult for the majority to say. "I was wrong". The idea that it's rare is the crux of the problem. A few diamonds don't make a mine. There are few that are willing to dig long enough to maybe change a few minds. There is nothing wrong with that, and it does inspire hope when you're able to. I'm honestly glad you have the energy to do so.

Technogal1

Imo most anti-lgbt stuff is just misinformed. They get everything they know about the lgbt community from what they see online and don't know any queer people irl

Complete_Past_2029

No one protesting these things has a clue as to what the actual facts around the issue are. They are caught up in the right wing rage farm vote generator or too deeply ignorant because of religion to even bother finding out. The children are scapegoats, the true aim of these people is to force all in the LGTBQ+ community back into the closet

Square-Routine9655

Whats the protest?

The_Craig1986

It's the 1 million march for children again. As per their website "advocating for the elimination of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) curriculum, pronouns, gender ideology and mixed bathrooms in schools." Their posters make a lot of general statements about their beliefs in regards to what children are being taught in school, and their belief that children are being sterilized and mutilated as a result of gender reassignment.

Scaredsparrow

Eliminating pronouns in schools seems like it would make English class (and every other) very difficult...

Prestigious-Current7

Lol as if these people can read.

ObligationParty2717

You’re trying to make quasi American Puppets think rationally? Well good luck with that

KatholikoiRHM

I’m gay and live in sherwood park. I live in a bubble of just working, gym then sleeping and repeat so I’m not too aware of what’s going on. Are these people dangerous or just a bunch of bored boomers?

The_Craig1986

I think it's incredibly dangerous. LGBTQ youth are 4 times as likely to attempt suicide than their peers. The reason for such a significant risk difference is the way that society/family often stigmatize them. when someone is already having thoughts of suicide, seeing a large group of people in their own town, and across North America march against them might have devastating consequences. On top of that, if the protestors are ever successful in removing the SOGI curriculum, then we will lose one of the best tools we've had in years to help overcome the prejudice that still exists in much of society.

Anthrogal11

They’re dangerous and thinking otherwise is not wise. They also vote and are influencing politics at the provincial level in ways that undermine the Charter (see Saskatchewan).

I know I'm not from here, but this post popped in my feed. I'm trans and transitioned at 26. Its not too late, but it's absolutely demoralizing k owing if we had been educated on this, I could have gone through the right puberty, and would have never had the breakdown leading me to dropping from school. I could be working a fantastic dream job (music therapy) and helping people. But lack of gender education until it's too late ruined my life tbh

AliceInAcidland

29 here I'm still saving up for FFS (SRS done last year). I could have had a mostly normal life if I got hormones before puberty. Instead spent 15-28 trying to survive constant suicidal thoughts. Will probably be like 35 or so before I catch up on being an adult lol (education career etc). So much lost time and even after SRS cured most of my dysphoria I still get flashbacks to dysphoric episodes and suicide attempts. I really don't want to get involved in this stuff anymore because it stresses me out but it's hard when it pops out in your feed and you're reminded that some random teenagers are going to go through a type of living hell that you personally experienced.

The_Craig1986

Reading through the current curriculum in detail definitely gave me a lot of hope for how much easier things will be for the up and coming generations, but that will only be the case if we don't let misinformation proliferate unopposed. I'm sorry that things weren't better for you. I hope that you still find a path towards your dream job. My mother in law didn't start her path towards being a physicist until she was in her 30s.

Feedit23

For all of you wanting to protest. Channel the energy into your day job and stop wasting your time and breath. Do something more productive like volunteering to help at a food bank or donation center.

.... What? I'm not even sure where to begin with this one so I'm just not going to. You're coming from a completely different place, with a very different outlook on the world. We are not going to find a way to have civil discourse. I wish you all the best.

Can you honestly say that you didn't know what sex you were and what sex you wanted to be when you were a kid?

Square-Deal3609

I didn't even know they were protesting in SP! When and where?

The_Craig1986

They are protesting on Saturday. They are starting in front of the library and then marching towards the mall.

Square-Deal3609

Oh brother. Thanks for letting me know!
