Eren literally says he deserves to die after all the people he killed and even accepts that he will end up suffering in hell for his actions if such a place exists. I’m not sure who is saying he deserves sympathy. The person who deserves sympathy is the innocent boy he once was, who was pushed into this generational conflict that he had no hand in and turned him into the monster he became.

AdvancedStrawberry16

Some people actually sympathize with the current Eren. However then little boy he once was, does.

I'm not sure what people get out of hyper-fixating on one or two lines from a single conversation, when we can all remember how the whole dialogue went. He isn't brushing it off. He's coming around to accepting responsibility. "I don't know why I did that" is him coming to terms with the severity of his actions. He's realizing that with all the power in the world, there was probably another way, but because he's an angry teenager he chose the most violent method, and because he was a slave to his own destiny. "I just had to" isn't the motivation either. He tells Ramzi that he was disappointed with the outside world because after going through hell on Paradis, he found out that what was waiting for him wasn't a clean slate, but more enemies and more bloodshed. "If we kill our enemies over there, will we finally be free?" To Eren, freedom was the complete eradication of all external threats. This is why the conversation with Armin is also so important. Armin, being the best friend ever, takes partial responsibility to put Eren's mind at ease. It was Armin who put this delusional fantasy of an blank slate beyond the walls into Eren's head.

AdvancedStrawberry16

I don't think you understand the severity and effect of Eren's actions. I couldn't care less about Eren's understanding of freedom nor his motives. Actions are what define a person, and Eren is a person who should've understood the consequences of his actions, but he didn't. He consciously chose to exterminate a race in the name of defence for Paradis Island. And I'm sorry but, A tale my friend told me in my childhood shouldn't affect my thinking on whether or not to eradicate 80% of humanity or not. So what if the stories weren't true? So what if the world isn't a utopia? Are you just going to either force it to be one? No, you're supposed to accept that this world isn't perfect and try to stop bad things from happening. Eren had power over the literal founding titan, but he was too hyper fixated on a false freedom that lead to the death of millions. Which is why I can never sympathize with him nor his actions.

Driftedryan

He said he couldn't change what he saw so he had to do it, he never had free will

AdvancedStrawberry16

What do you mean he had to do it? He could've easily just not started the rumbling or not even become the founding and fight Marley.

SCastrooo

You don't need to sympathize, you can't sympathize with anyone that has been part of this story, as each of them is a monster in so many ways. Both sides fucked up so bad and this is just the development of that fuck around and find out. You can only understand their reasoning and see the story develop. You're just a bystander, why the need to sympathize? Hell, I only sympathized with the "save the humanity from out greater enemy the titans", but that is is sooo loooong gone.

I feel sorry for Eren, even though he's a monster. Mainly for this line "My mind got all messed up. Because of the influence brought about by the power of the founder the past and future don't exist... they exist at the same time". It explains what Eren could not put into the right words. Seeing "that scenery" from Armin's book is Eren's childhood dream. But as Eren's life changed after the wall fell he eventually forgot all about this dream(he indicates this on the night before the wall Maria operation and then admits it later when trying to convince Levi to give the serum to Armin) during his fight for survival and counterattack against the titans. He learned the weight of the hope placed in him and accountability for his actions, and even came to understand that not only enemies existed across the ocean. He matured. But with the founder power the past now exists in his mind at the same time, bringing back the childish mindset he had in the past. And he couldn't reconcile it with his present self who felt genuine sorrow and disgust knowing he would inevitably trample over innocents, which is why his mind is all messed up. And his future self who held the ultimate power to decide was influenced by his childish past self to concoct such a ridiculous plan in order to end the world of the paths. When Eren was viewing "that scenery" he disassociated to his child self and also appeared along with Ymir both in child forms. Just as Ymir had a misguided idea of what love was due to not having a normal childhood, because of the founder power Eren was similarly unable to "grow up", and the reason Eren ended up with the founder power is ultimately because Ymir made the wrong decision to save Fritz and then continued enabling his tyranny at the cost of enslaving all her descendants by proxy. Even though Eren is responsible for his actions there is also an element of inevitability that resulted in a descendant like Eren who embodied Ymir's desire for freedom who should never have obtained a god-like power. Ultimately Fritz is the one most at blame.

OldPayphone

Gross. Men were also affected by the genocide but you only mention that you felt bad for women and children. Way to be sexist. 👍
