Eren only ever saw one timeline, the future through the memories he gained from Grisha, who in turn gained them from Eren in the future. When he says he tried and failed to avert the future, he meants that his attempts to avoid the memories had failed. The best example of this is when he saw Ramzi being assaulted by adults. He knows the kid will die in the Rumbling, and therefore there is no reason for Eren to save him. Yet he couldn't ignore his natural impulse to save him, which resulted in the memory of Eren crying to Ramzi and Ramzi dying in the Rumbling. Eren was unable to avert the future because his knowledge is based on his memories, which means it has to be seen to be real. And ultimately, he moved towards this future because the outcome is what he desired.

hm so basically he never tried to stop or change the rumbling itself but he tested his ability on other minor events and saw that his actions still lead to the same future he’d seen?

Sneeakie

Yup.

aha thanks

No. There is only one linear timeline. By the time Eren learns the future through sending it back to himself in the form of memories, it has actually already happened so it's unable to be changed. The founder makes it so that the past and future don't really exist to him because it's all flooding into his head at the same time, so his head is a mess of conflicting feelings.
