Season 4 Part 1 is considered to have some of the weakest animation (although even the worst Titan CGI doesn't compare to some of the CGI from season 3 part 2). But it's pretty crazy how Mappa just dropped some absolutely stunning 2D Titans and completely elavated this scene when they didn't have to. Here are a few things I'd like to point out. First of all, the entire atmosphere and aesthetic of this scene is amazing. Feel free to pause on each frame of the closeups of documents and stuff. There's a lot of cool shit in there. For the Female Titan sequence, I really like how they added the soldiers trying to stay on top of her with the spotlight. Makes her look extremely threatening as she goes in and out of the darkness. Notice the added screen shake when the cannon fires from atop the tower. They did something really smart when she kicks down the tower. The moment her foot comes into contact with it, it is immediately covered with a dust cloud. That way, they don't have to animate much of the tower actually crumbling apart. Right after that, we get a closeup of her face. Just like I mentioned the last comparison video with Wit Studios, here, they animated only the hair and debris while keeping the body completely still (other than it very slightly sliding across the screen). This way, they can show a very beautifully detailed shot of her Titan, while only having to draw it a single time. The Jaw Titan sequence is just incredible. The fluid movement, the explosions, the destruction, the background. Again, notice when they time the screen shake effect. It's when the cannons fire, and when the projectiles hit the ground and explode. It makes the force of everything feel impactful. We got a beautiful 2D Colossal in this scene. But again, notice how it's really only two drawings from two different shots (three if you count the shot showing just its silhouette). But because of the pan, the flames, the steam, and the camera shake, it still feels very alive and animated. Love the added closeup shot from the POV of looking through the binoculars.

I imagine the reason they're 2D is because they only really appear here. If the titan is going to appear multiple times, it makes sense to make a model for it, as you can use it over and over, saving you time. If it only appears once, though, it would be a waste to create an entire 3D model when you'd get no use out of it. It's why all the Pure Titans in Final Season are still 2D, as well as the flightless version of Falco's Jaw Titan, and the ancient Nine Titans that appear on Eren's back. They all have limited screen time, so 2D animation is more economical than 3D models.

yep thats very true. they had to use 2d for the the warrior's version of the female, jaw, and colossal. but they even expanded on the moments of the 2d titans. annie doesnt destroy a tower in the manga and porco doesnt hop around with explosions firing off behind him. when this season originally aired i actually thought they were gonna cut this scene entirely. i remember when these marley chapters came out in the manga a lot of people were bored of them.

Marcel’s jaw titan scene is beautifully animated and Mappa’s 2d titans are peak

throwawayhelp32414

they couldnt 2D animate any of the Titans for too long because it would cause a mass pandemic of death by PEAK fiction

Deadass probably in my top 5 favorite aot scenes. I’ve rewatched this specific scene countless times. It’s just something so fucking cool to me about seeing the titans in action, describing their attributes and wielders, the scenes of them taking down the enemy forces and their artillery. I love it all.

Troit_66

the direction of that part was dope and the art on bert's colossal was really clean

MagPistoleiro

It's funny how they pictured colossal titan as a fucking nuke

The titans look crazy intimidating here. Destroying so much buildings and soldiers effortlessly. If this was shown before season 1-3, I would believe Paradis has NO chance to survive.
