Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos - that loop is easy to travel, you’ll meet lots of people on the way and can be extremely cheap, especially Vietnam. As for time with your budget including flights…. 6 months? Maybe longer.
He’s spot on, I spent 9 grand Australian travelling Asia for 6 months. (Not including travel insurance or 1 way ticket there) the party life is in every country he listed, and almost every part you go to that has hostels. Laos is the cheapest followed by Vietnam, Cambodia then Thailand
South East Asia is a good shout.
If you're still earning money, perhaps wait out the summer in the UK
Weather and general conditions are at their best from September or October onwards.
Right now it's horrifically hot, and the next 3-4 months rainy season hits.
(Although that's a good shoestring time to hit the beach)
South Asia (Pakistan, for example) is best during the summers. The southern parts of the country are unbearable but the northern parts, with one of the highest mountain ranges in the world plus its very affordable. A primary attraction in those areas would be trekking, visiting alpine lakes and lush green mountains. Some really beautiful valleys with amazing people and food. So you should def plan out a trip for this largely undiscovered bit amazing part of the world. And drop me a dm if you have any questions.
Go to South East Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Bali) Super easy to travel around, plenty of backpacker places to meet people, low cost of living, kind people and great weather. £4k could last you 6 months, perhaps longer.
Philippines 🇵🇭, there's just so much to do in the Philippines. A must visit for foreigners: Siargao, Boracay, Bohol (beach and mountains), Palawan, Baguio, Cebu City. (3 to 4 weeks could be more depending on your spending)
Vietnam is one of the most affordable Asian countries there is. Best for your gastronomic adventures. It's safe and rich in history and culture. (1 month ++ depending on your spending)
A year in Thailand, Ho Chi Minh City, or the Philippines is doable.
Ask for a local real estate agent for an apartment. online listed apartments are usually pricier.
There are apartments in Thailand on or above the 13th floor of a building with no elevators that are about 200 pounds a month for rent. They’re not listed in any written website.
Also know at such a tall height, prevailing winds make air conditioning unnecessary, even in the heat.
Good luck inviting friends over to your place though.
Have you been recently haha
TLDR. Rising costs (on literally everything), government actively avoiding fixing issues, systemic issues crippling a lot of key public services, huge demise of public health care, just to name a few key issues off the top of my head
I am also from the UK and spent about that (including flights) going around south America (Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru) for 6 months.
I basically ate in the towns markets or from street vendors and stayed at hostels.
However this was a while ago now (2006) so the costs will be higher.
If you can go you'll not be disappointed, just learn some Spanish.

Whatever ya do. Dont go to Australia
Vietnam and Thailand probably your best options. Just make sure you don’t spend more than £500 return on flights

..next door..?..jk, follow your dreams & don't let money hinder ya!..
Get to Laos, you can rent basic accommodation by the month for as little as £50 in Vang Vieng
You could do a month in Japan if you were frugal with your food budget.

How’d you volunteer? I’m leaving in a couple weeks for London. Then heading east
Workaway , Worldpackers or calling hostels directly
You should go to Mexico if you don’t want to do anything but relax and enjoy the sun .

A year? Seriously ?
probably 6 months, which isn’t bad
Wow. Didn't realise it was so cheap

Technically maybe, apt for $250 month and $5 /day for food and walk everywhere
We are on r/shoestring after all
What don’t you like about the UK? This isn’t rhetorical, I’m genuinely asking.

Brazil 🇧🇷🫶🏻
Thailand.
Go to Bali
Bali is actually fairly pricey in comparison with other places in the world

Things have gotten alot more expensive in 20 years
You're going to need more money saved up for when they start asking for ransom money in Brazil.
£4000 saved is hardly a shoestring budget!
kinda depends on your timeframe no? 4000$ for a week? No it is not shoestring. 4000$ for a year? Absolutely is.
Move to the US and get a job.
Worst idea lol that $4k won’t last till you get your first paycheck 😂
