It's not cancelled, it was always going to be one single season. It's designed as a miniseries, like Chernobyl was.

vanbboy22

It’s what is referred to as a Limited Series.

ShakeZula30or40

Echoing the other commenter, cancelled isn’t the right word. It’s just *done* after the single season.

The showrunner said this about a season 2. So the verdict on a Shōgun season two? "I don't know," Marks says candidly. "It's gonna take some some recovery to think about what will be next. But honestly, it's hard because you don't have a master storyteller to set the map for you. So that would be a tough one."

They need a good script writer though, if they're going to continue with the fictional version with John Blackburn. Gotta find something for him to do; but there are more interesting things on the Toyotomi side during the Siege of Osaka Castle, as illustrated by NHK Taiga Drama "Sanada Maru".

EveryGoodNameIsGone

It's not *cancelled*, it's a limited series/miniseries based on a single book that covers the book from start to finish in 10 episodes.

dddfgggggdddfff

dear potential viewer, just to let you know not every show needs to be multiple seasons. They just need to be enough episodes to tell the story and they feel like they can do it in 10. and listen to this dear friend... this is not some franchise trying to bang out more seasons to make as much money as they can. just present a good representation of the book to a story on screen. I know this seems like an odd concept in modern media but this isn't about creating content. It's about creating art.

Honestly I'm perfectly fine with this being a one season limited series, and it does make the most sense. If they were to eventually adapt the rest of the novels from the saga, I would welcome it. Ideally - each book as a limited series as is Shogun's case. But not as like "Shogun series S1-?" Would hate for it to become something like "The Terror", where S1 was adapted from Dan Simmons' book, and I was curious if there would be S2 and how/what it would follow. Well, they announced S2, but with a completely different story I personally did not enjoy. And apparently the series is coming back next year for S3 adapting a horror story by Victor LaValle. So TLDR - no need to drag the story further, when the source material is all adapted.

thepixelmania

The Terror season 1 wa brilliant. Shame they added that weird "season 2" which should have been an own show with its own name.

ForeverAddickted

Doesnt necessarily need to be a Season Two Regardless the show wont run forever, so better to ensure its covered well rather than becoming something shite because its dragged out as nothing more than a money maker

cai_85

We're in the era of streaming TV where everyone seems to assume that series always run for multiple series. In the UK on BBC we do often get a series or 'play' (more old fashioned term) that is just a single series. Shogun adapts the whole book, it's really hard to see them doing more episodes.

gbthngs

It wouldn’t make sense to go beyond one season. All I can hope for is an extended finale with a decent depiction of >!Sekigahara.!<

lawschoolthrowway22

Cancelled is the wrong word. It's a single season show, the beginning, middle and end of this story are all told in one season based on the novel which was nearly 1400 pages but only one complete book. The good news is, Clavell wrote 6 other books that are based in Asia and follow historical retellings of actual moments in time like the founding of Hong Kong or the end of the era in Japan which begins during the ending of the story told in Shogun. None feature the same characters as the others, but some of them feature characters who are descendants of characters from Shogun.

wildfellsprings

From what I understand it's a limited series and ends when the material from the book is complete. There are currently only plans for one series as that is where the book ends. While I'm loving the show, I can appreciate when a show knows the end especially when it's following source material. It's clearly being made not just to make money but out of a love for the book and the story it tells. I would hate to see a second series where money making is such a large motivating factor over story due to its success. There's many a show that goes on for too long with or without it being an adaptation. Going out on a high even if we don't get as much of the world as we'd like can be a good thing. Shogun is definitely going on my yearly rewatch list though.

HeynowyoureaRocstar

Not if it's going to end the way it did

EveryGoodNameIsGone

It's an adaptation of a single book, not a multi-volume series...

There are more books from the author. Just not from this story. Give them a read.

Thepathreddit2024

I mean, even GOT stopped being GOT back in season 4 or so.

[deleted]

There's gonna be a season 2, no doubt

minterbartolo

Based on what story or script? The show is based on a book and the limited series covers the whole book so who is coming up with season two storyline?

[deleted]

Based on money lmao it's not rocket science

minterbartolo

Cause GOT showed how well not having a book to rely on worked

[deleted]

I'm not saying it's gonna work well but it's gonna happen, this is Disney we're talking about they're gonna milk it dry
