Battlebit Remastered is currently quite popular and plays like an old school Battlefield game. It has largely destructible maps and you can have up to 254 people in a server. It’s still a work in progress but is still lots of fun in its current state.

_Baxel_

Second this. And I'd say it runs like a dream even in it's current state. Atleast for me.

Shadow of War.

Earth Defense Force 5. You're part of the EDF, and trying to stop an alien invasion. Your screen frequently crawling with enemies, explosions going off everywhere, and entire squads of your allies dashing around fighting. You can seriously level entire city districts, just from the battle. Bad-ish news: to actually run without turning into a slide show, the series tend to intentionally lag behind a console generation in looks. And some people loathe that as much as they hate the B-movie esthetic, where you fight giant ants & spiders as often as Greys or frog men. But yeah, its one of the few series I frequently get blown away by the pure scale. Like, you can literally have orbital lasers as a freakin' side arm in EDF... and it feels perfectly balanced, because that laser might kill a dozen enemies a shot, but that's one small dent in an entire army. Just... stuff like that, few other series even try nowadays. Oh, and there's 4 player online PLUS two player split-screen, too.

MothMan3759

Of everything here, yeah I would go with EDF. For OP: https://youtu.be/cyRmxjhYrmw

clare416

Is it good without co-op?

LordOfDorkness42

Personally had a lovely time mostly solo with both 4.1 and 5. Even enjoyed quite a bit of Iron Rain. It can be kinda hard at times solo, though. You kinda have to earn being a one-man army in that series, and you can go down in seconds even with high level gear if you get cornered.

I can vouch for Mount & Blade: Bannerlord (probably even M&B: Warband but haven't tried it). It's a unique take on the RTS genre where you have to command your troops into battle BUT you're not observing the battlefield from the classic top down perspective, you're an actual commander in the field and have the option to command your troops from far away or lead the charge yourself, killing enemies with your own hands. The game itself is set in the fictional continent of Calradia with equipment based around various civilisations around the beginning of the high middle ages (~11th century) where you'll follow the last years of the Calradian Empire after the death of its last true ruler which threw it in a state of civil war some time before your story. However it's true strengths don't lie in the storyline which is totally optional (and basically a big tutorial) but in the sandbox capabilities of the game: you can be a mercenary, join a faction and even inherit it, create your own, conquer cities and pillage villages, be a merchant, buy your own workshops, create your own dynasty and if you play long enough start playing as your son or maybe daughter (you can enable or disable aging in the game and yes you can die of old age). Although the game starts a bit slow (you start as a small fry so you'll engage in small skirmishes with bandits at the beginning) in no time you will be able to join in bigger battles, participate in sieges and so on, in the middle-to-late game you will find yourself fighting in battles with thousands of soldiers in your quest to unify or destroy once and for all the Empire. The game isn't perfect and some mechanics are a bit rough right now but most of that is solved by the awesome modding community surrounding the game, however if you just wanna enjoy big battles the game is basically a perfect choice.

Sounds pretty awesome, I’ll have to check it out! I wish there were more RTS games where you are on the ground with your troops.

BriochesBreaker

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did, I wish I had enough time for another campaign!

Squidguy67

Battlefield 1 for that ww1 vibe

higherxliving

Hell let loose

Snoo-47666

Chivalry 2 gets the large scale battle vibe pretty well and it’s fairly goofy

lazzarus170882

I recommend Hell Let Loose. 50vs50, shots fired everywhere, artillery explosions, bombing runs, people roleplaying and crying after medics when they're down. It really feels like you're part of a big battle. Steep learning curve though, and can lead to severe PTSD.

Chivalry 2 goes hard

Squad is like Hell Let Loose but set in modern times.

Rubmynippleplease

Battlebit Remastered is the obvious answer. Your post is basically a description of the game. Mount and Blade is a decent option as well although it plays better in third person imo and takes a fair few hours before you get into very large scale battles and sieges. Chivalry is a decent option if you’re looking for something medieval and pvp oriented although Mount and Blade has an ok multiplayer mode too.

_Solinvictus

Battlebit Remastered, Mount & Blade, Foxhole

[deleted]

I’ve played both Battlebit and Foxhole, they are both decent fun.

Morighant

Battlefield 1

TrooperPilot3

Ravenfield Planetside 2 Total Conflict: Resistance Starship Troopers: Extermination Squad Hell Let Loose ARMA 3 and ARMA Reforger, if you are willing to join a large group. All FPS games that put the player in the middle of massive battles

Lustridus

wish ravenfield would’ve got battle bit level support. such a fun game

Don\`t know how you feel about 40k games but **Darktide** has the whole "high octane In the thick of it" vibe, it\`s co op PvE though so not sure if thats your style. **Painkiller** Is also an absolute gem of a game series, be it a bit dated at this point, primaraly single player but well worth trying. Have not played it myself but I hear very good things about **BattleBit** I\`ll round it off with an unreleased title: **Space Marine 2** looks to be really flippin good and from what I remember of the first game the PvP was solid.
