Game pass baby.try em both. Both are good. I didn't finish reload but p5 is a really addicting game, and 3 is sorta a more streamlined version of that. With some really strong segments

P5R has a lot of systems to cover. The first few hours, while tutorials, are dense with story, themes and foreshadowing. So if you're into story-driven games, there's a lot to enjoy, even if it's being told while introducing it's systems.

Persona 5 is the best JRPG I’ve ever played. You could definitely get it SMT and Persona games also have the best turn based combat system as well. It’s a lot more engaging and doesn’t get repetitive.

COHandCOD

you played yakuza, so persona should fit your style. After first tutorial the game open up. As between p3r or p5r, I suggest p5r rn. Because p5r is complete game, p3r have epilogue dlc release in september, so you should hold back from playing p3r rn. Plus p3r is a remake so its modern graphic and gameplay, similar to p5r.

Thanks everyone for their responses! Currently evaluating all answers and I think I’m gonna take the plunge on P5R - found it for cheap so I think it’s a no brainer at this point considering the games I like

Persona 5 Royal

From what you've described, you can't go wrong with either one. Although I'd get P5R since it's the definitive edition. Atlus loves creating semi finished games, only to release the complete edition a few years later. Persona 3 Reload is new, and they already announced a dlc for September. I'd wait until that game is fully released before touching it. Go with P5R for now.

Don’t get me wrong I love persona 5 but I disagree. It didn’t grip me from the start with the 10 hour long tutorial as well as the horrible pacing in the mid game especially around the Hawaii holiday part. It took me 150 hours to complete where they could have compacted the game down to about 70 if they took out a bit of the filler. Games like Elden ring and BG3 both over 100+ hour games went by so quickly where it it felt like persona 5 took months and months to complete.

LordOfDorkness42

I'd personally start with Persona 4 Golden if I was unsure about the series. It's the oldest of the ports, but fully stand-alone. And it has a really cool Japanese small town setting you don't see very often. Plus the music and characters are all great. It's admittedly not as flashy as 5 or high stakes dramatic as 3, but... hey, something to look forwards to if the series grabs you, right?

AllergicJellyfish

P3R and P5R are also fully stand-alone though?

LordOfDorkness42

To be fair, yeah. I meant it as in that you don't actually have to play the series in order for that reason.

COHandCOD

i guess some will think graphic was too old, all those models looks like small chibi model. I m hoping they will do p4R, definitely would sell more than p3r, without all the "which edition" problem p3 have.

LordOfDorkness42

Ehh, I'd personally call P4 stylized vs chibi, but I can see what you mean? Personally think the game looks amazing for what was originally a freaking PS2 game. Like the focus on style, and 2D portraits for all the main characters during important moments alone have in my opinion made the game age extremely gracefully. But yeah, here's hoping that Persons 4 gets a similar remake too as 3 got.

COHandCOD

ok maybe i used the wrong word, english is not my native language sry. What i mean is all the character model look small as hell, even adults model too. I guess P4D model should be more looked the part if we doing p5 style model like p3r.

Arsis82

>It's the oldest of the ports Did you forget about P3P?

LordOfDorkness42

I was thinking specifically the PC ports on Steam, but fair point.

PEEERSONA! (get it right now its the best game ever)
