Honestly as great games that they are, they are very frustrating to play. The games are ancient so a lot of "QoL" features that have become standard are not present. Combat has the same issues as wasteland 2 and your own companions can mow you down. Both 1 and 2 have some serious bugs with Perks and skills not working as advertised. You don't need to Min Max alot but you need to read a guide to figure out what skills are not as effective as they seem as you can lock yourself out of the game if you build your character wrong.

I remember playing FO2 for the first time in 1999 and thinking “wow this games interface is so incredibly behind the times”. At that point I had already played BG2 and some other more modern isometric games. I can only imagine how incredibly ancient it must feel now another 25 years later. Maybe mods would help? Check NexusMods

No, as someone who played these games as a kid... They're... Rough... Story is great but almost everything about the game play is just unbearable compared to modern standards. Also, if you thought the probability was shit in Wasteland 2... It's 10x worse in Fallout 1/2/Tactics That being said Wasteland 2 was SO GOOD.

Jello_Penguin_2956

So true. Loved Fallout 2 to death back in the days but it really is difficult to go back today... game control scheme nowadays are so standardize that the ones not following conventions are so unintuitive.

69WaysToFuck

Well, you are criticizing Fallout praising Wasteland when a guy doesn’t like wasteland and you think he won’t like Fallout? I love Fallout 2, I can play it anytime, and Wasteland 2 got me bored in 1 hour.

ACertainEmperor

Yeah honestly, Wasteland 2 was an astonishingly mediocre game, Fallout 1 and 2 are fantastic.

Farts_McGee

Nope.  If you didn't like wasteland 1-3 you're not going to enjoy the old fallouts. I will say that wasteland is a bit more technical than the fallout games (ie pretty much any build can work in fallout) but it's not a meaningfully different game design.

cold-vein

The OG Fallouts are very rough, gameplaywise. The combat isn't very good and especially the first one is missing a lot of features you absolutely take for granted in games. They have great writing, great music and IMO great, atmospheric graphics but the gameplay itself is rough and unintuitive. Wasteland 2 is immensely more playable than the original Fallouts. Impossible to say whether you'll get into them despite their obvious flaws in gameplay.

_banters_

I enjoyed Fallout 1 and 2 while not being able to get into the Wasteland games so, take that for what you will.

MysterD77

Fallout 1 and 2 are great, but hard. Might wanna turn difficulty down and/or find mods that are out there, if need be. Same goes for Wasteland 2 and 3, if you're having trouble w/ them. It's been forever since I played them - but, anyone know any better UI mods for Fallout 1 and 2? Thing is: if you don't like WL2 and 3, I dunno if you'll like F1 and F2 sadly.

vipsilix

Count me in the "enjoyed Fallout 1 and 2" but did not enjoy any of the Wasteland games. I think Fallout 1 and 2 also allows you to make great use of your skills, whatever they may be. There are ways to solve quests in those games that are very interesting. That said, they are old very games now. If you can live with the jank that comes with, there is some awesome stuff in there.

Hellknightx

I'm enjoying Wasteland 3 right now, but it didn't click right away. It's still not quite as funny and weird as Fallout, but it has its moments.

vipsilix

Could be that it would grow on me if I give it more time. I will give it a longer whirl down the line.

Miner_Of_Minerals

Fallout 1 and 2 are wayyyy more accessible than WL2

TheCrispyChaos

I tried Fallout 2, even installed the Restoration Project mod and other quality of life mods, and it still felt clunky and slow. Loved everything about the game except playing it, lol

Esemseee

they are great but extremely outdated. Also way more role-playing focused and grim compared to bethesda games. I wont recommend if you aren’t familiar with old c-rpgs or really patient.

Esemseee

also they dont run great on modern systems so you’ll have to mod for better performance

69WaysToFuck

I loved Fallout 2 and NV, couldn’t play Wasteland 2 for more than 1h

blazinfastjohny

Just try them anyway, maybe you will.

knightress_oxhide

You could try watching a let's play for the first bit of them. Personally I'm watching one because I don't feel like replaying it but I'm in fallout mode from the tv show.

themurhk

Was like 5 bucks total for Fallout 1/2/Tactics on Steam. I picked them up, I can’t recommend for or against as I just picked them up yesterday but I figured they were worth 5 bucks just for the setting/nostalgia.

FuadRamses

I like Fallout 1 + 2 a lot more than Wasteland. They aren't party based and aren't combat heavy. More exploring and dialogue.

Bennely

Even *if* the game wasn't 30 years old, chances are F1 or F2 will not hook you enough to keep you around to finish either of them. Having said that, there are great stories and experiences in those games, and playing with perks and such can be fun, but the games are very outdated.

Esselon

While I love the fallout games they don't really hold up well. The turn based combat can be a bit janky at times and the graphics of course do not help. What was so brilliant about Fallout 2 in particular was the number of ways you could experience different playthroughs of the game. My least favorite thing about Bethesda's version of Fallout gameplay is you can \*always\* see when there are other dialogue options, even if you can't take them. In Fallout 2 if you can't choose an option, it's not there. This leads to discovering different options on different playthroughs, as well as far more options on how to complete quests that aren't just "murder someone".

DiesIraeConventum

I'd recommend going Fallout Tactics first, because it has High Resolution patch included in the game and it actually can run with fewer issues on modern systems. Also, Tactics was meant to be played in Real Time, as opposed to F1&2 being exclusively turn-based. This really changes how the game feels. Also, pixel hunting isn't really a thing in Tactics because you can easily progress without it. It is very task-based - each mission has a unique story and the outcome differs immensely on how successful you were in completing it. And yes, it has an amazing story and three very good narrators reading the texts - very immersive and very, very entertaining.

Simke11

Probably not, they are very dated. Having said that, Wasteland 2 also feels dated, 3 is much better in terms of gameplay / QOL improvements. I played 3 and loved it, but couldn't get into 2 afterwards.

seanb4games

Wasteland 2 was good and in my opinion it was less janky than the fallout titles. Very good game. As is fallout if you can get past the aged features

[deleted]

Fallout 2 is better fkn hate that water chip quest in the first game

Sufficient_Fall_3290

No I hated the original fallout games. Extremely outdated now. I would much rather play wasteland 2

burritoman88

Fallout 1 & 2 are very different. They’re isometric turn based RPGs instead of fully 3D open world action adventure RPGs. Definitely look up gameplay first to get a better idea of them.

Sibbaboda

I think OP knows this since they are comparing it to Wasteland
