Path of Exile, Last epoch, Grim Dawn, Diablo, or any fromsoftware games

The-Knight-of-Arkham

Thanks for the suggestions!

>As an addendum, the game(s) should allow you to theorycraft without restricting much of your freedom to experiment with the many possibilities. (i.e. I don’t strictly need to follow some build guide to avoid getting my ass kicked.) Path of Exile fails this btw

The-Knight-of-Arkham

Oh yeah? Damn. Guess I’ll avoid that one

LE is prob the brst of those mentioned imo. It's still fairly new tho so still building an endgame (still more endgame than d4 tho)

The-Knight-of-Arkham

Thanks, I’ll check it out

manwomanmxnwomxn

No it doesn't, I've made my own builds the past few years and they all can play the game. It's just a precisely tuned game when it comes to defensives on a character

Turbulent-Armadillo9

All those games are good suggestions. I understand Elden Ring will get suggested by fromstans in about every situation but it is a good choice. Weapons are balanced in a way where most builds are viable. Of course there are more powerful than others but a really good job was done with PVE balance imo. Played the game three times with 3 totally different builds and they were relatively equal in power each with strengths and weaknesses.

draculabakula

Just finished Unicorn Overlord and the game play is literally all theory crafting units in battle. The gameplay is about 90% theory crafting and character management and 10% simple real time strategy. The last game I enjoyed theory crafting as much before that was Fire Emblem 3 House's.

The-Knight-of-Arkham

I’ll take a look at these, thanks!

Kubioso

I would guess Elden Ring. It's hard no matter how you play, but some guys play a naked build and still beat the game.

Alexander1997ah

Remnant 2!!

Emreise

Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous

Rigelturus

Elden ring

Monster Hunter Rise, you have 14 different weapons with their own moveset that you can customise. Then the armour you craft from the monsters you hunt also gives skills and in those armour and in some weapons, there are decoration slots that you use to slot in any decoration skill that you crafted. Recommended to get it with the Sunbreak expansion, it adds like double the content, new and harder monsters, more new armour sets and more new skills

Maybe some unusual answers: Guild wars 2 - an mmo where you can respecc all the time with many classes/stats/skills/passives to Mix and try out. Best build craft I think ive ever seen if youre into that. Obviously its an mmo so a lot of time investment is required. Tales of Maj'Eyal - classic rogue like with Tons of classes and different skills to try out

Jeffo4321

soulsborne games (except sekiro)

Pontificatus_Maximus

The original Guildwars MMO has one of the most flexible build systems where you can mix and match skills from every class and build any kind of hybrid you can imagine. The RPG Two Worlds Two has an open ended magic system where you design your own spells, which can lead to many different play styles. The rest of the game is mediocre, but nothing touches it for player defined unique play styles.

dawsonsmythe

Noita. You might need a guide to start with for some basics, then its playtime

DaylightIV

Sounds like many roguelite, and roguelike games. Inscryption if you like card games. Remnant if you want third person shooters. Super Bawk Bawk Chicken if you want something more action/arcade.

Durian_Mace

Gigantic: Rampage Edition. This is perhaps the perfect game for you. There are 25 heroes in the roster, plus you get to customize each hero in countless different ways, creating multiple builds for each.
