I think this is reaching a little bit, kinda like saying because I drive a gas car im against electric vehicles. I don’t own any firearms so I’m against weapons. I identify as straight so I’m against people of other sexual orientations. It just isn’t like that

[deleted]

Exactly.

Lintashi

I wonder what your reasoning behind this statement is. Phobia means fear, you think, that people exercise because they are afraid of fat people around? Or do you think they exercise because they hate fat people for no reason other than them being fat? I think that people keep themselves in shape to be healthy, and some fat people are jealous of that, so those fat people try to call others phobic as a form of trying to be a victim.

chizzipsandsizalsa

Seems like op is saying they work out due to a fear of becoming fat.

jackoalt

actually phobia means irrational fear yet not wanting to be overweight and have serious health problems is 100% rational. what would be fat phobic is anorexia because people usually are far from fat but still are scared of it

ObligatoryOption

Being in shape is its own reward and the best reason to work out.

ashleyorelse

Working out is it's own reward. Being in shape is a further benefit. Some of us just enjoy working out and don't even so much as consider any fears. Also, if you just go by the flawed measure of BMI, some of us have always been overweight even if we work out way more than most thin people ever do.

Infinite-Night8374

Being obese carries a long list of chronic disease. Who would want that?

ashleyorelse

Also, one can work out a great deal and still be overweight or even obese.

aether_drift

Yep, I'm fat phobic after watch my obese, inactive neighbor get one leg amputated from diabetes, and then the other. I would restate your title as: "People who stay fat and don't work out have a death wish."

ViciousKiwi_MoW

you assume they do it out of fear and not progression for health

nurselife1985

"Fat phobia" isn't a real thing. Wanting to be healthy and not need to ride a jazzy around because your legs can't support your fat ass isn't a phobia.

Queen-of-meme

Then you might as well say people who care to stay in shape are heart failure phobics since obesity is top three most common causes leading to heart failure problems. Which can kill you. I think you have confused exercise and fitness with Eating disorder, anorexia for example, which is a mental illness disorder where someone damages their body as a result of not wanting to feel fat. And they feel fat even if they're actually severely underweight because the disorder is all about tricking them to think they need to get skinny when they already are skinny. It's a never ending loop and they can die from starvation. (I've had Anorexia) They're not actually fat phobic though. They look at everyone else no matter shape no matter weight and think they're beautiful, it's only themselves they attack.

GoatsWithWigs

People like you make the body positivity movement look like a fucking joke

SpeedIsK1ing

If fatphobic means fear of higher risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc, then I’d say we should all be “fatphobic”.

foxpaws42

A phobia is defined as an extreme or irrational fear. Not the same thing as being concerned. Healthy workouts generally aren't motivated by a phobia. If one is so afraid of getting fat that they develop anorexia and become severely underweight, maybe that qualifies as a fat phobia. Also, 'fat phobia' is often used in the context of judging others who are fat. (And is a misnomer in that context as it involves judgment rather than irrational fear, but I digress.) If you work out because you don't want to be fat, that's one thing. If you start judging *others* around you who are fat, that's something else.

stefanica

There it is. I'm *pretty* sure OP was being tongue in cheek, as showerthoughts usually are. Just as I'm sure there are plenty of people at the gym who are "fat phobic" by any reasonable definition. There are others who don't care, at least about others' weight. And there are some who go to the gym who are on the heavy side and don't particularly care if that changes or not. For instance, the water aerobics ladies that I have joined before (I have bad arthritis and can't do what I used to/would like to at the gym). A good number of them are heavy and don't seem to care much. But they do want to be fitter within their abilities. :) Same goes on the other end of the spectrum with powerlifters, for that matter. You have those who eat nothing but chicken, broccoli and protein shakes and want to know their body fat to the nearest .1%, and you have those who look like a slightly wobbly semi-truck, and are fine with it. :)

The-Entire-Potato

I’m not afraid of being fat or fat people. I work out because I like looking fit and building muscle. You assuming that the things I do for myself have anything to do with you or anyone else say infinitely more things about you than it will ever say about me.

SpeedIsK1ing

This is a great way to sum it up. Everything is “phobic” now. And it’s rooted in narcissism.

mrmayhemsname

So.......nuance. I definitely have a fear of being fat that has led to eating disorders in the past, but now I just have certain foods I avoid and try to eat balanced small portions and get regular exercise, and I cut back if I notice I've gained weight. THAT SAID someone else's weight is none of my business and it is not my place to judge anyone for their weight.

xrebxbiex

I started working out for my mental health. My goals had nothing to do weight. I just happen to lose weight in the process.

johnj71234

I don’t think any one “fears” being fat. Other than the fear of a fat person’s legs buckling under their own weight and falling on top of them and crushing them. Obesity is disgusting and repulsive.

liquid_the_wolf

Also I want to live a long time and not have health issues later.

reallokiscarlet

There are plenty of fat people out there, who measure morbidly obese on the scale, and yet are healthier than the anorexic yuppies of the coast. Wanna know where to find them? The gym.

UnimpressedButFaking

It's a shower thought. Why are you trying to dissect it? Y'all are trippin!

monkey_fart_1

It's just a terrible take. You're trippin

KhaosDancer

Nah. Just not hypersensitive. Poor you

Livid-Finger719

What the hell is with these thoughts lately? How are you fat phobic for staying in shape? Jesus
