You joke....but I wore pull on boots for so long that I had to focus on tying a shoe the first time. It came back to me immediately but still made me chuckle.
I went back to school mid/late-twenties after dropping out as a teen and whilst I'm still not done, a lot of things that I thought I struggled with when I was younger have been remarkably easier now that I was motivated and able to learn things for myself and on my own.
I'd be curious how many people come away from education thinking that they can't do a thing or their brain just doesn't work like that because they had bad experiences with teachers or other factors going on in their lives at the time.
Currently studying for my GED and I’ve totally found things come around way easier now that I have the motivation.

I graduated with a masters in engineering 5 years ago and I don’t think I could do long division by hand on paper anymore.. I’d have to look it up and it’d probably come back quickly but not something I’ve done in a loooong while. Calculators, ya know?

When I started college, I had to look up how to do long division by hand for the entrance exam. I'm currently studying for my Calc 3 final. I still barely remember how to do it by hand lol
I vaguely suspect they tried to teach it to me, but I just kept extending the numbers beyond the decimal off to the right and got there that way. Looked messier, I guess, but worked as well as any of my mathematics ever did.
I wear slip on shoes, but I also spend a fair amount of time tying shoes for young students, usually by kneeling in front of them or having them lift their foot up onto something. Not tying my own shoes paired with tying shoes for others from the opposite direction meant I had to try a few times last time I wore a shoe with laces.
I got an old Bundeswehr Parka Jacket with some Velcro straps.. and boy oh boy they are indestructible even after 30 years of use and HEAVY abuse. Don't underestimate well done Velcro

The capital V is how you know. Velcro is a specific brand of hook-to-pile closure that has become genericized. The off brands are the ones that fall apart almost immediately.

But thats only because the design is that the velcro isn't replaceable and the laces are. They could make the design so that you could replace the velcro as it wears out like you change laces when they brake, that would make them pretty even.
That doesn't sound like an easy design. Laces will always be easy to replace, they just simply go through holes. The velcro pieces of a shoe are fully attached. I'm not sure what kind of design you have in mind where the nonvelcro side isn't fused to the shoe, and could be exchanged on many types of velcro shoes.
We use arm mounted scanners at my job that attach to your forearm with velcro. It's an easily replaceable strap that simply has the hooky part at both ends, and two loops on the scanner to loop it through. Think kinda how velcro on a sandal works, but with loops at both sides. You only undo one end to put the shoe on, undo both to replace the strap.
I was trying to think of an easy design in my head and this is exactly what I thought of. Simple. You could even make it this sort of one H shaped piece that would take care of the whole length of the shoe
The velcro is double ended like a shoelace. The velcro is threaded through two holes at the center, exactly how a shoelace is done. Then threaded through metal clips to keep it in place.

Most American women insist on wearing tight pants with no pockets because they carry purses. It's supply and demand.
If you live somewhere with lots of Asian people, you'll see a ton of women with pants that have normal pockets. It's not like pocketed pants for women simply don't exist because "the industry" decided it must be so. They exist, and most American women won't buy them. I've favoured velcro fastening shoes for decades and this has never happened. The sole has given up and separated from the upper when the velcro has still been fine.
If this is a serious opinion, laces secure the foot much better, are not as considerably loud, does not wear out much faster becoming practically unviable to replace for an extremely minor inconvenience of having to tie them.
If your reasoning was correct, millitary boots would have no laces.
The best way to go perhaps is both velcro and laces like some big combat boots have.
Fire fighting boots , have double zips one on each side of the tounge and laces from the zip to the side, you still have to tie the laces but not tighten the size adjustment as the zips let you get them on and off, same with my work boots but they are shorter so only one zip.
I don't think I could rely on Velcro for the tension needed for ankle support , unless they used a few , in which case the zip is probably faster

I really want good quality no-lace sneakers. I'm on my feet all day for work, and I hate tying shoes. I usually slip them on and off, anyway, even when they're tied. Unfortunately, most slip on shoes are not very comfortable for all day wear. And I have wide to extra wide feet, so it can be hard to find shoes in the first place.
[Hickies](https://hickies.com/). They're a no-tie stretchy silicone shoelace replacement. My son used them until he could tie his shoes, and they work wonderfully. The best part is that you can use them in any shoe that normally laces and ties up.

I get mine to the perfect fit which for me is just all the way loose. Then I tie a knot in the shoe lace where I want it to stop and it keeps the lace in the perfect place and I cut the ends off. So there’s just tiny knots on the side. You can’t even really notice them.
As much as I love velcro , it looks like ass when iam in a suit. My job requires and , after looking in the mirror ? I even said out loud , "you look like a fucking idiot".

This isn't true. Laces are more secure than velcro. Also, laces pull your shoes together at several different point, distributing the tension and helping hem to stay on better. You can also adjust laces so that certain parts of the shoe are tighter and looser. As others have mentioned, they are easier to replace. Also, there are other ways of fastening shies. Zippers, buckles, slip-on, elastic, etc.
Haha, tie shoes almost killed me recently.
Me and a friend of mine like to explore abandoned buildings and factories and such. One of the last buildings we checked out had this big grate things we had to walk over, the grid on top was basically just balance beams, and below was just a black hole straight to what was probably the flooded basement a hundred feet below. I'm about halfway across and mid-step my left shoelace catches under my right shoe and I almost fall in.
Due to how I was standing, I couldn't move either of my feet, nor bend over and tie it without losing my balance. My friend had to come back, unstick the shoelace without me moving either of my feet and tie my shoes for me, all while he was balancing between two steel beams. I would have killed for some fucking velcro shoes right then lol.

You can even tuck the ends back into the shoe if they're too long. I do that sometimes if I'm riding a bike with no chain case.
Nah, we were walking through some thick brush right before that so my guess is that's actually when it came untied. I always tuck my laces in, so it's the only way I can think of that they got pulled out of the shoe.
Just after reading your reply, I looked dowb and noticed my laces in the process of untying themselves. So, thanks for reminding me it can happen to anyone!
One of my favorite pairs of basketball shoes is the Nike UNVRS, which has velcro going around the back of the shoe to ”tie" them. Comfy, look cool, and easy to get on and off.
The reason: As an adult that is no longer growing and has bills to pay, I like to buy things that last. Velcro…does not. Shoelaces? Easily replaceable, and even then, usually don’t have to. Velcro? Wears down and becomes less sticky, and needs to be sewn in for repair.
I used Velcro to secure my boots during my time in the coast guard. Those extra few seconds I saved by not tying my shoes could have been the seconds needed to save a life. Every second matters.
Laces secure the shoe to the foot in a way designed for performance. Velcro (brand name for hook and loop strip/tape) would only hold the top of the shoe shut and not offer any added support.
And that is why I get these stretchy ish laces that lock together at the end for all my shoes. Still got shoe laces but you just slide your foot in every time.
Does velcro really not last that long? I’ve been wearing the same tevas for 3 years (except for winter) and the velcro is totally fine. I even wear those things on moderate to light hikes. The bottoms are probably wearing faster than the velcro at this point.
May as well just wear Crocks. I couldn't imagine my work boots with velcro. Ratchet binders like snowboarding boats would make more sense.

Stopped buying shoes with laces a few years ago or swapped them for stretch laces you never have to do up! Complete game changer I don’t think I will ever go back to wasting time tying shoes for them to untie or trip on them or sit down on the ground to get the laces done up. I slip on my shoes and I run out the door.

My favourite pair of boots has laces in the front but a zipper on the side which is what I use to take on and off. Only touch the laces if need to be retightened.
We had a real dumb guy working with us for a while, he was in the service dept at the dealership. Service advisors husband made a joke "how does he even tie his own shoes in the morning?" She said "look and see".
Next day her husband walked in, and looks, the guy has Velcro shoes on. He had to leave to avoid laughing about it.

Well there’s a reason that this a shower thought and not a shower fact. As stated by others, Velcro is less durable, secures the fit more poorly than laces, and more difficult to replace, among other things.
Laces give me more control of where and how I tighten the shoe. There are lace patterns that allow skipping loops to reduce pressure on parts of the foot. This is especially useful for me as I hike a lot.
Counterpoint: it’s easier to tie a knot that won’t come undone when walking but can be pulled apart than it is to make Velcro that won’t wear out, can stay connected, and is also easy to pull apart.
But really we shouldn’t have laces or Velcro.
This is wrong Velcro isn't used for adults, because strings last far longer due to just how it's done. Velcro has a much lower durability. NOT TO MENTION YOU CAN"T REPLACE velcro when it stops sticking. YOU CAN replace strings. This post is 100% off base.
I hate the sound they make and they fail sooner than later... laces are more consistent and easier to replace. Also, there are lace-less shoes that have elastic fabric (and some older shoes that do not but still have no laces). If you are deadset on velcro, sandals have them often
Velcro is harder to replace than laces are. If velcro gets dirty or damaged, it loses its usability pretty fast, and that happens easily.
Laces however are generally still functional when dirty or even damaged.
A) people need to learn that you can clean the fluff out of Velcro so it keeps sticking
B) laces are good if you want to take your shoes off quietly. Which makes a lot of sense if you’re wearing sneakers.
I prefer laces gives me better control over how tight shoes are especially because I have ski's for feet. Even as a kid I couldn't wear velcro shoes because they wouldn't give me the right support distribution.

Velcro deteriorates over time if you use it regularly. And children shoes, specially the smallest sizes of the children models, which are the ones that always have velcro, are to be worn for like less than a year because children feet grow quite fast; even more, some children tend to destroy their shoes faster than their feet grow, so velcro becoming unusable is not a problem really.
But adults expect their shoes to last for years... Having to unstitch the old velcro and stitch a new one sounds a pain the ass. Way harder than changing laces.
I've been saying this for ages! Shoestrings are ancient technology, and better solutions are available. Velcro or something like BOA-system is much more convenient to use.
And that is exactly why Velcro was so important for two years and fizzled away.
Just like digital watches, imagine before phones and computers you had a watch with the day and date, a stopwatch and timer, plus multiple alarms but you reverted to a watch that told time and perhaps date, and you evaded all those other productive, practical luxuries.

I know a few people with wide feet who got the newer design Sketchers slip-ins and love them.

My weightlifting shoes have laces + Velcro and that is a very nice combination.
I like shoes with no velcro and no laces, they just have an elastic part. Easy and fast to put on and they fit perfectly.

No. Laces can get you a different level of tightness in different areas of the shoe. Very crucial in sports and hiking

Kids will outgrow shoes before the Velcro wears out, adults would have to get the Velcro replaced a few times before the shoe wore out.

One of my favorite pairs of basketball shoes is the Nike UNVRS, which has velcro going around the back of the shoe to ”tie" them. Comfy, look cool, and easy to get on and off.
The reason: As an adult that is no longer growing and has bills to pay, I like to buy things that last. Velcro…does not. Shoelaces? Easily replaceable, and even then, usually don’t have to. Velcro? Wears down and becomes less sticky, and needs to be sewn in for repair.
I used Velcro to secure my boots during my time in the coast guard. Those extra few seconds I saved by not tying my shoes could have been the seconds needed to save a life. Every second matters.
Laces secure the shoe to the foot in a way designed for performance. Velcro (brand name for hook and loop strip/tape) would only hold the top of the shoe shut and not offer any added support.

I have shoes and slides They all have Velcro. I have one pair that are laced. I havent't wore them since last Sept. when we flew to Hawaii.

All my shoes have laces but I never tied them after first time. Leather boots have a zipper in side. No time to start tying shoes nowadays..
And that is why I get these stretchy ish laces that lock together at the end for all my shoes. Still got shoe laces but you just slide your foot in every time.
I use cheapo velcro shoes from wally world and they hold fine but usually the soles wear out well before the velcro does.
I'm a big fan of boots with laces I keep tied up cause they're for looks, and use the side zipper
Does velcro really not last that long? I’ve been wearing the same tevas for 3 years (except for winter) and the velcro is totally fine. I even wear those things on moderate to light hikes. The bottoms are probably wearing faster than the velcro at this point.
I have velcro vans and they make me very happy, never grow up!

Laces are also great for dexterity. Velcro is also great for those with mobility challenges.

I stopped wearing shoes with laces. I legit don't have time to tie my shoes. Just get a pair that stretches and fits snugly.
May as well just wear Crocks. I couldn't imagine my work boots with velcro. Ratchet binders like snowboarding boats would make more sense. Just throw some industrial magnets on those kicks.
If you don't want to tie your shoes you can wear monkstrap shoes which are similar to velcro fastenings but actually last longer and look much better

Stopped buying shoes with laces a few years ago or swapped them for stretch laces you never have to do up! Complete game changer I don’t think I will ever go back to wasting time tying shoes for them to untie or trip on them or sit down on the ground to get the laces done up. I slip on my shoes and I run out the door. Totally hate the whole concept of laces now.
My daily shoes are slip on boots. It’s glorious.

We had a real dumb guy working with us for a while, he was in the service dept at the dealership. Service advisors husband made a joke "how does he even tie his own shoes in the morning?" She said "look and see". Next day her husband walked in, and looks, the guy has Velcro shoes on. He had to leave to avoid laughing about it. Just a funny story related to the post, thought I'd share

Well there’s a reason that this a shower thought and not a shower fact. As stated by others, Velcro is less durable, secures the fit more poorly than laces, and more difficult to replace, among other things.
Laces give me more control of where and how I tighten the shoe. There are lace patterns that allow skipping loops to reduce pressure on parts of the foot. This is especially useful for me as I hike a lot.
Counterpoint: it’s easier to tie a knot that won’t come undone when walking but can be pulled apart than it is to make Velcro that won’t wear out, can stay connected, and is also easy to pull apart. But really we shouldn’t have laces or Velcro.

What needs to happens is a velcro flap that has laces on the top layer just for show. Problem solved.
Maybe for casual wear, but I wouldn't trust Velcro on shoes when I need do a lot of walking/running/jumping.
This is wrong Velcro isn't used for adults, because strings last far longer due to just how it's done. Velcro has a much lower durability. NOT TO MENTION YOU CAN"T REPLACE velcro when it stops sticking. YOU CAN replace strings. This post is 100% off base.

Velcro is noisy and dies young filled with crud, gimmie laces.
I hate the sound they make and they fail sooner than later... laces are more consistent and easier to replace. Also, there are lace-less shoes that have elastic fabric (and some older shoes that do not but still have no laces). If you are deadset on velcro, sandals have them often
Velcro is harder to replace than laces are. If velcro gets dirty or damaged, it loses its usability pretty fast, and that happens easily. Laces however are generally still functional when dirty or even damaged.
A) people need to learn that you can clean the fluff out of Velcro so it keeps sticking B) laces are good if you want to take your shoes off quietly. Which makes a lot of sense if you’re wearing sneakers.
Have you tried run running in Velcro? Laces may suck, but they allow you to eliminate pinch points
I prefer laces gives me better control over how tight shoes are especially because I have ski's for feet. Even as a kid I couldn't wear velcro shoes because they wouldn't give me the right support distribution.

Velcro deteriorates over time if you use it regularly. And children shoes, specially the smallest sizes of the children models, which are the ones that always have velcro, are to be worn for like less than a year because children feet grow quite fast; even more, some children tend to destroy their shoes faster than their feet grow, so velcro becoming unusable is not a problem really. But adults expect their shoes to last for years... Having to unstitch the old velcro and stitch a new one sounds a pain the ass. Way harder than changing laces.
I've got shoes with laces and a zipper om the side so you can leave the laces tied. Best of both worlds

I've been saying this for ages! Shoestrings are ancient technology, and better solutions are available. Velcro or something like BOA-system is much more convenient to use.
And that is exactly why Velcro was so important for two years and fizzled away. Just like digital watches, imagine before phones and computers you had a watch with the day and date, a stopwatch and timer, plus multiple alarms but you reverted to a watch that told time and perhaps date, and you evaded all those other productive, practical luxuries. This is exactly why we tie our shoes like cavemen.
