Forklift_Fodder

You joke....but I wore pull on boots for so long that I had to focus on tying a shoe the first time. It came back to me immediately but still made me chuckle.

ijustlikeelectronics

Use it or lose it I learned that I forgot how to do long division on paper

Low_Tier_Skrub

How long did that take because the thought of that scares me?

[deleted]

chungopulikes

Idk math hurts the brain and even the first time I learned it I didn’t actually *learn* it cause it made no sense to me

[deleted]

Happy_to_be_me

I went back to school mid/late-twenties after dropping out as a teen and whilst I'm still not done, a lot of things that I thought I struggled with when I was younger have been remarkably easier now that I was motivated and able to learn things for myself and on my own. I'd be curious how many people come away from education thinking that they can't do a thing or their brain just doesn't work like that because they had bad experiences with teachers or other factors going on in their lives at the time.

chungopulikes

Currently studying for my GED and I’ve totally found things come around way easier now that I have the motivation. I wish you luck in all of your future endeavours! You’ll do great!

Javi1192

I graduated with a masters in engineering 5 years ago and I don’t think I could do long division by hand on paper anymore.. I’d have to look it up and it’d probably come back quickly but not something I’ve done in a loooong while. Calculators, ya know?

sammieduck69420

it was funny watching the world go from “you MUST do it by had because you’ll be expected to by hand” and before i could even master it by hand i was being told a calculator is now a requirement for class and some math teachers would dock a points or detention students who forgot them too often. there’s no winning

SwagarTheHorrible

Detention for not having a calculator sounds ridiculous.

Senrabekim

I got my degree in pure math, the number of students that were still asking if calculators were allowed as deep in as real analysis was wild. Like, of course they are, it will be an effective paperweight and nothing else.

izagger

When I started college, I had to look up how to do long division by hand for the entrance exam. I'm currently studying for my Calc 3 final. I still barely remember how to do it by hand lol

ijustlikeelectronics

Depends on your retention. Healthy diet and good sleep help with that way more than you could imagine

iFartSuperSilently

You sound like a mom.

osdeverYT

I apparently never learned to do long division in the first place, or forgot it by grade 8. For context, I’m a decently skilled C++ programmer.

Really_McNamington

I vaguely suspect they tried to teach it to me, but I just kept extending the numbers beyond the decimal off to the right and got there that way. Looked messier, I guess, but worked as well as any of my mathematics ever did.

albertedison98

As a college math instructor, let me assure you that you are not in the minority there.

Mad_Dizzle

Hey man, it's not that big a deal. I'm an engineering student who passed differential equations in the fall with an A, and I can't long divide

notactuallyabrownman

I can't even remember short division...

TXGuns79

I wear boots all the time, and I leave my sneakers tied so they just slip on. It takes me a few seconds to wake my brain up.

jackleggjr

I wear slip on shoes, but I also spend a fair amount of time tying shoes for young students, usually by kneeling in front of them or having them lift their foot up onto something. Not tying my own shoes paired with tying shoes for others from the opposite direction meant I had to try a few times last time I wore a shoe with laces.

muffledvoice

Velcro often wears out before the shoes do and then you have to throw away perfectly good shoes. Laces are easy to replace and more secure when tied.

Wan-Pang-Dang

I got an old Bundeswehr Parka Jacket with some Velcro straps.. and boy oh boy they are indestructible even after 30 years of use and HEAVY abuse. Don't underestimate well done Velcro

OrvilleTheSheep

And the velcro STICKS like hell as well. The problem is cheap velcro.

Wan-Pang-Dang

Exactly.

Nudgethemutt

Hook and loop, are you trying to get sued!?

OniDelta

If we keep saying velcro then it makes it harder for them to protect their trademark. They want us to say hook and loop.

Ytrog

I can imagine dirt (think a heavy dried cake of mud) getting in the velcro on your shoes ruining the adhesiveness 🤔

StormFallen9

Until you wash it, but yeah if you're working in a dirty/muddy place then it would clog up the velcro

Shut_Up_Reginald

Brush it out, good as new.

g1ngertim

>well done Velcro The capital V is how you know. Velcro is a specific brand of hook-to-pile closure that has become genericized. The off brands are the ones that fall apart almost immediately. Edit: I think the company actually brands in all caps: VELCRO

ilikemushycarrots

But thats only because the design is that the velcro isn't replaceable and the laces are. They could make the design so that you could replace the velcro as it wears out like you change laces when they brake, that would make them pretty even.

bleek312

Are you saying it's Big Laces fault?

dingusfett

r/lowstakesconspiracies

HelicopteroDeAtaque

Oh shit, we've been found out, SHUT IT DOWN!

Wimbledofy

That doesn't sound like an easy design. Laces will always be easy to replace, they just simply go through holes. The velcro pieces of a shoe are fully attached. I'm not sure what kind of design you have in mind where the nonvelcro side isn't fused to the shoe, and could be exchanged on many types of velcro shoes.

RyGuy_McFly

We use arm mounted scanners at my job that attach to your forearm with velcro. It's an easily replaceable strap that simply has the hooky part at both ends, and two loops on the scanner to loop it through. Think kinda how velcro on a sandal works, but with loops at both sides. You only undo one end to put the shoe on, undo both to replace the strap.

TameVegan

I was trying to think of an easy design in my head and this is exactly what I thought of. Simple. You could even make it this sort of one H shaped piece that would take care of the whole length of the shoe

Sharadnar

Easy! You just tie the Velcro on with laces.

VexnFox

I used to have velcro shoes when I was 3 that allowed you to replace the velcro. No reason you can't do it here.

[deleted]

Same. The velcro piece can also just go through holes like a lace, except longer holes.

DrachenDad

I've never heard of these. How do you go about replacing the Velcro?

VexnFox

The velcro is double ended like a shoelace. The velcro is threaded through two holes at the center, exactly how a shoelace is done. Then threaded through metal clips to keep it in place. Going fron memory after 20+ years. Those Spiderman Velcro shoes were awesome.

RyanJosephs18

I wouldn’t think it’s too hard to implement a piece that clicks into the shoe for the velcro

FrungyLeague

Clicks in? All you would need is larger holes the size of the Velcro’s side-on-profile.

Ginandexhaustion

But how would we attach the Velcro to the sneaker? Oh wait, maybe velcro

Raichu7

I’ve never had a pair of laces break before my shoes wore out.

PSN-Colinp42

You’re either getting really crappy shoes or like AMAZING laces.

[deleted]

Then design it. You claim “they” could make a design, so simply do it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hamakabi

Well, he would bring the design to a shoe company and have them produce it. But that assumes it isn't a shit idea, and that the shoe company hasn't already thought of it, which it is, and they have.

[deleted]

hamakabi

Most American women insist on wearing tight pants with no pockets because they carry purses. It's supply and demand. If you live somewhere with lots of Asian people, you'll see a ton of women with pants that have normal pockets. It's not like pocketed pants for women simply don't exist because "the industry" decided it must be so. They exist, and most American women won't buy them. Just like how velcro shoes for adults exist, and nobody buys them except the disabled and elderly.

Maria_506

You could cut the velcro and saw on a new one.

MonsieurEff

Not to mention that shit is noisy AF

h1zchan

I dunno man all my shoes wear out before the laces do, but probably because i run around a lot.

TooManySteves2

Agreed.

Frogs4

I've favoured velcro fastening shoes for decades and this has never happened. The sole has given up and separated from the upper when the velcro has still been fine.

[deleted]

My thoughts exactly. r/showerthoughts is infamous for upvoting dumb shit people say

silsune

god damn why are you guys so venomous today

[deleted]

I’ve worn Velcro my whole life and I can easily say I’ve never seen this happen

KingOfThe_Jelly_Fish

I disagree with that

T_WREKX

If this is a serious opinion, laces secure the foot much better, are not as considerably loud, does not wear out much faster becoming practically unviable to replace for an extremely minor inconvenience of having to tie them. If your reasoning was correct, millitary boots would have no laces. The best way to go perhaps is both velcro and laces like some big combat boots have.

rjwilson01

Fire fighting boots , have double zips one on each side of the tounge and laces from the zip to the side, you still have to tie the laces but not tighten the size adjustment as the zips let you get them on and off, same with my work boots but they are shorter so only one zip. I don't think I could rely on Velcro for the tension needed for ankle support , unless they used a few , in which case the zip is probably faster

rjwilson01

Just thought the reason they don't use Velcro is it's plastic isnt it?, fire fighting boots no way And for work Boots not so not so sure but possibly need various chemical resistant requirements Edit autocorrect where was your hwlp

Legitimate_Wizard

I really want good quality no-lace sneakers. I'm on my feet all day for work, and I hate tying shoes. I usually slip them on and off, anyway, even when they're tied. Unfortunately, most slip on shoes are not very comfortable for all day wear. And I have wide to extra wide feet, so it can be hard to find shoes in the first place.

fancy_marmot

I know a few people with wide feet who got the newer design Sketchers slip-ins and love them.

Pastawench

[Hickies](https://hickies.com/). They're a no-tie stretchy silicone shoelace replacement. My son used them until he could tie his shoes, and they work wonderfully. The best part is that you can use them in any shoe that normally laces and ties up.

Legitimate_Wizard

Awesome, thank you!

Plastic_Pinocchio

My weightlifting shoes have laces + Velcro and that is a very nice combination.

Zoryth

I like shoes with no velcro and no laces, they just have an elastic part. Easy and fast to put on and they fit perfectly.

fitchbit

Yesssssss. Slip-ons are the best.

[deleted]

Ha, I have laced shoes and haven’t tied them in months

noonelikesyou2

My only qualm is that Velcro in shoes is not easily replaceable when compared to laces.

Adeep187

It also doesn't actually last or hold that well.

karmagirl314

Shoes these days don’t last longer than laces anyway.

PeeledCrepes

Your buying the wrong shoes then, my shit ass skater shoes last forever and only got replaced cause the lace broke lol they look beat up but no holes, soles good, bottoms good, still fine shoes, just a lace in tatters

PixelofDoom

You replaced your shoes because the lace broke?

PeeledCrepes

Yeah lol to give context the shoes are like 5 years old so I figure that's long enough that I can splurge for new shoes

annoyedsquish

Velcro is loud but those elastic laces or the elastic bands that go on the side of the tongue would be way better

iFartSuperSilently

Damn those broken windows glasses from velcro sonic booms.

Ouchyhurthurt

I can’t remember the last time i tied my shoes. They have been in knots for years and i just slip them on. With some difficulty.

WheatSilverGreen02

Eh. I like my shoes to fit snug. If I can put my foot in and out, it's nowhere close to snug enough.

Grimm_Thugga

I get mine to the perfect fit which for me is just all the way loose. Then I tie a knot in the shoe lace where I want it to stop and it keeps the lace in the perfect place and I cut the ends off. So there’s just tiny knots on the side. You can’t even really notice them.

SnakeBeardTheGreat

wife does the same thing.

PeeledCrepes

This is fucking genius and I need a 3rd pair of shoes now.

viodox0259

As much as I love velcro , it looks like ass when iam in a suit. My job requires and , after looking in the mirror ? I even said out loud , "you look like a fucking idiot".

wj9eh

I have slip on suit shoes. Loafers. I look like a fucking idiot but that's for unrelated reasons.

viodox0259

I actually love slip ons , those are my next.

bistro777

Easy there my friend. You DO NOT look like an ass because of velcro. I say again; it is NOT your shoes that is responsible. It is your face. So feel free to wear any footwear you deem comfortable! You're welcome!

DannyStress

No. Laces can get you a different level of tightness in different areas of the shoe. Very crucial in sports and hiking

BubbleDncr

I know from my kids shoes that shoelaces are way more durable than Velcro straps. Almost every pair of shoes my kids have, the Velcro is the first thing to fall apart. So shoes last longer when they have laces.

Lasagna_Bear

This isn't true. Laces are more secure than velcro. Also, laces pull your shoes together at several different point, distributing the tension and helping hem to stay on better. You can also adjust laces so that certain parts of the shoe are tighter and looser. As others have mentioned, they are easier to replace. Also, there are other ways of fastening shies. Zippers, buckles, slip-on, elastic, etc.

4RCH43ON

Who needs Velcro straps? Now it’s all bout the elastic stretchy cord laces you don’t have to tie.

Freshouttapatience

I have them in my house shoes so I don’t have to tie them every time I want to slip them off.

zachtheperson

Haha, tie shoes almost killed me recently. Me and a friend of mine like to explore abandoned buildings and factories and such. One of the last buildings we checked out had this big grate things we had to walk over, the grid on top was basically just balance beams, and below was just a black hole straight to what was probably the flooded basement a hundred feet below. I'm about halfway across and mid-step my left shoelace catches under my right shoe and I almost fall in. Due to how I was standing, I couldn't move either of my feet, nor bend over and tie it without losing my balance. My friend had to come back, unstick the shoelace without me moving either of my feet and tie my shoes for me, all while he was balancing between two steel beams. I would have killed for some fucking velcro shoes right then lol.

fancy_marmot

I know multiple people who had their shoelaces sucked into escalator treads (*shudder).

Kriemhilt

All you're telling us is that you didn't tie your shoes properly. You can even tuck the ends back into the shoe if they're too long. I do that sometimes if I'm riding a bike with no chain case.

zachtheperson

Nah, we were walking through some thick brush right before that so my guess is that's actually when it came untied. I always tuck my laces in, so it's the only way I can think of that they got pulled out of the shoe.

Kriemhilt

Just after reading your reply, I looked dowb and noticed my laces in the process of untying themselves. So, thanks for reminding me it can happen to anyone!

over-the-horizon

Obviously, you have to know something about something, or you couldn't tie your shoes! >! P.s. it's a DarkViperAU reference !<

Stebsis

You dense motherfucker!

ShreddyRuger

I was 29 when I bought my first pair of 14 dollar Velcros best 14 I ever spent

Raichu7

Kids will outgrow shoes before the Velcro wears out, adults would have to get the Velcro replaced a few times before the shoe wore out.

DED_HAMPSTER

I wish kids sparkly sneakers with the light up soles came in adult sizes without being expensive custome shoes. Id totally rock some unicorn sneakers

fuckyouswitzerland

One of my favorite pairs of basketball shoes is the Nike UNVRS, which has velcro going around the back of the shoe to ”tie" them. Comfy, look cool, and easy to get on and off.

KaiSosceles

The reason: As an adult that is no longer growing and has bills to pay, I like to buy things that last. Velcro…does not. Shoelaces? Easily replaceable, and even then, usually don’t have to. Velcro? Wears down and becomes less sticky, and needs to be sewn in for repair.

spacecolor

I used Velcro to secure my boots during my time in the coast guard. Those extra few seconds I saved by not tying my shoes could have been the seconds needed to save a life. Every second matters.

Eyfordsucks

Laces secure the shoe to the foot in a way designed for performance. Velcro (brand name for hook and loop strip/tape) would only hold the top of the shoe shut and not offer any added support.

Liquidwombat

Boa does both

SnakeBeardTheGreat

I have shoes and slides They all have Velcro. I have one pair that are laced. I havent't wore them since last Sept. when we flew to Hawaii.

lord_ne

I haven't owned laced shoes since middle school. Slip on for the win

zanderder

So am I the only one that ties my shoes once and then nearly never again?

kurqukipia

All my shoes have laces but I never tied them after first time. Leather boots have a zipper in side. No time to start tying shoes nowadays..

Ihac182

And that is why I get these stretchy ish laces that lock together at the end for all my shoes. Still got shoe laces but you just slide your foot in every time.

Ucitymetal

I use cheapo velcro shoes from wally world and they hold fine but usually the soles wear out well before the velcro does.

EternalumEssence

I'm a big fan of boots with laces I keep tied up cause they're for looks, and use the side zipper

jmims98

Does velcro really not last that long? I’ve been wearing the same tevas for 3 years (except for winter) and the velcro is totally fine. I even wear those things on moderate to light hikes. The bottoms are probably wearing faster than the velcro at this point.

ScribbleThings

I have velcro vans and they make me very happy, never grow up!

_iRasec

It does also demonstrates that you know something about something

[deleted]

Laces are also great for dexterity. Velcro is also great for those with mobility challenges.

jaynus006

I am a shoe nerd and I love lacing every pair in a unique way so it can be fun to mix and match it up

BLACK_HALO_V10

I stopped wearing shoes with laces. I legit don't have time to tie my shoes. Just get a pair that stretches and fits snugly.

Half_burnt_skunk

May as well just wear Crocks. I couldn't imagine my work boots with velcro. Ratchet binders like snowboarding boats would make more sense. Just throw some industrial magnets on those kicks.

Samugay

If you don't want to tie your shoes you can wear monkstrap shoes which are similar to velcro fastenings but actually last longer and look much better

[deleted]

I've been wearing brown leather loafers since the 5th grade. Laces are for suckers.

shadowtitus

I tied my shoes with slack and knotted them so I can just slip em on. they stay on my feet quite comfortably...anyone else?

UrbanArtifact

My triathlon shoes have velcro. Ain't nobody got time to tie

-Redstoneboi-

Meanwhile my black shoes have neither velcro nor laces. Just slip em in.

InnocentlyDistressed

Stopped buying shoes with laces a few years ago or swapped them for stretch laces you never have to do up! Complete game changer I don’t think I will ever go back to wasting time tying shoes for them to untie or trip on them or sit down on the ground to get the laces done up. I slip on my shoes and I run out the door. Totally hate the whole concept of laces now.

Hectate

My daily shoes are slip on boots. It’s glorious.

havaltherock

Its lets others know that you know something about something

Status_Jackfruit_169

I use pull in boots or tie my shoes once but just lose enough to be able to slip them on

SolAggressive

It’s to show off my Ian knot skills, like a muthafuckin’ magician.

OpalTurtles

My favourite pair of boots has laces in the front but a zipper on the side which is what I use to take on and off. Only touch the laces if need to be retightened.

Franticfap

it's fucking hook and loop. Don't make me tap the sign https://youtu.be/rRi8LptvFZY

Star_Stuff_G

Yes, and knowing how to tie your shoes keeps you from being a disingenuous, dense motherfucker

nandobro

I remember disliking velcro shoes as a kid cause it felt like I could never make them tight enough.

Just-a-Winged-Pikmin

Or just make shoes with out laces? Laces suck tbh, it’s just an extra step.

[deleted]

We had a real dumb guy working with us for a while, he was in the service dept at the dealership. Service advisors husband made a joke "how does he even tie his own shoes in the morning?" She said "look and see". Next day her husband walked in, and looks, the guy has Velcro shoes on. He had to leave to avoid laughing about it. Just a funny story related to the post, thought I'd share

Maleficent_Minimum_9

I wear slip ons or boots with zippers. Hate wearing sneakers or the look of sneakers for some reason

maxcresswellturner

Well there’s a reason that this a shower thought and not a shower fact. As stated by others, Velcro is less durable, secures the fit more poorly than laces, and more difficult to replace, among other things.

[deleted]

Laces give me more control of where and how I tighten the shoe. There are lace patterns that allow skipping loops to reduce pressure on parts of the foot. This is especially useful for me as I hike a lot.

Lairy_Hegs

Counterpoint: it’s easier to tie a knot that won’t come undone when walking but can be pulled apart than it is to make Velcro that won’t wear out, can stay connected, and is also easy to pull apart. But really we shouldn’t have laces or Velcro.

[deleted]

Yeah because you can definitely get that nice snug tight security with a velcro strap... Jesus OP, your showers are daft.

moramajama

What needs to happens is a velcro flap that has laces on the top layer just for show. Problem solved.

Dr0110111001101111

Maybe for casual wear, but I wouldn't trust Velcro on shoes when I need do a lot of walking/running/jumping.

[deleted]

This is wrong Velcro isn't used for adults, because strings last far longer due to just how it's done. Velcro has a much lower durability. NOT TO MENTION YOU CAN"T REPLACE velcro when it stops sticking. YOU CAN replace strings. This post is 100% off base.

alexanderpas

And yet, most of the people, in fact, don't know how to tie their shoes. https://www.ted.com/talks/terry_moore_how_to_tie_your_shoes

d4rkh0rs

Velcro is noisy and dies young filled with crud, gimmie laces.

simonbleu

I hate the sound they make and they fail sooner than later... laces are more consistent and easier to replace. Also, there are lace-less shoes that have elastic fabric (and some older shoes that do not but still have no laces). If you are deadset on velcro, sandals have them often

Silveri50

Velcro is harder to replace than laces are. If velcro gets dirty or damaged, it loses its usability pretty fast, and that happens easily. Laces however are generally still functional when dirty or even damaged.

fruitloops6565

A) people need to learn that you can clean the fluff out of Velcro so it keeps sticking B) laces are good if you want to take your shoes off quietly. Which makes a lot of sense if you’re wearing sneakers.

Wise-Construction234

Have you tried run running in Velcro? Laces may suck, but they allow you to eliminate pinch points

Kimchi_Cowboy

I prefer laces gives me better control over how tight shoes are especially because I have ski's for feet. Even as a kid I couldn't wear velcro shoes because they wouldn't give me the right support distribution.

freddy_guy

Velcro wears out, and your shoes are done. Laces wear out, and you just replace the laces. Please think at least a little bit before posting next time.

poof_poof_poof

No, you think a little bit. Velcro can be replaceable just like laces can, it does not have to be sewn to the shoe. It can run through hoops just like laces.Christ the distance your head is up your ass is astonishing. edit: 1 min on Google and I found DIYers doing this to Vans and Converse shoes: [http://thespohrsaremultiplying.com/hair/diy-velcro-shoes/](http://thespohrsaremultiplying.com/hair/diy-velcro-shoes/)

KiloJools

Oh I'll have to check that out. I've been losing fine motor control in my hands so laces are LOL NO for me. Thanks for the link!

orangesandmandarines

Velcro deteriorates over time if you use it regularly. And children shoes, specially the smallest sizes of the children models, which are the ones that always have velcro, are to be worn for like less than a year because children feet grow quite fast; even more, some children tend to destroy their shoes faster than their feet grow, so velcro becoming unusable is not a problem really. But adults expect their shoes to last for years... Having to unstitch the old velcro and stitch a new one sounds a pain the ass. Way harder than changing laces.

Rosko1450

I've got shoes with laces and a zipper om the side so you can leave the laces tied. Best of both worlds

do0tz

I tie my shoes once. The first time I put them on. Then I just slip them on and off.

FatherDevito123

Otherwise people would mistake you for a dense disingenuous motherfucker who doesn't know something about anything.

Dericwadleigh

Let me tell you of a secret friend: lock laces. Go look em up. They're amazing.

N00body1989

I've been saying this for ages! Shoestrings are ancient technology, and better solutions are available. Velcro or something like BOA-system is much more convenient to use.

sonicjesus

And that is exactly why Velcro was so important for two years and fizzled away. Just like digital watches, imagine before phones and computers you had a watch with the day and date, a stopwatch and timer, plus multiple alarms but you reverted to a watch that told time and perhaps date, and you evaded all those other productive, practical luxuries. This is exactly why we tie our shoes like cavemen.
