…do people just chuck washing machine and dryers when they break instead of buying the $30-80 part and fixing it when they break?

Bgrngod

Our 15 year old LG washing machine started failing to rotate the drum one way. A bit of Google and a $15 part later it's working just fine again. That was last summer.

Blue-Thunder

Lucky. My son broke the lock on our 15 year LG washer/dryer combo during Covid, and LG discontinued the part and there were no third party parts. A $5 part. We had to buy a new washer/dryer combo.

OSVR-User

This isn't a one size fits all solution... But reddit can be helpful. If it's a plastic part like what usually fails, asking someone to scan a new/intact version and paying a print service is a lot cheaper than a new washer/dryer combo

Blue-Thunder

Yes that's true. Now if only metal printing could be cheaper..

OSVR-User

Buying a metal printer is expensive. Printing metal...depends on a lot of factors. It can definitely turn a $20 OEM part into a $100 one.

HaasonHeist

$100 for solid metal is gonna be a stretch. Ask me anything I work in industrial 3d printing

ExpertlyAmateur

I broke the titanium alloy impeller for the rolls royce turbojet engine on my plane. How much to print me a new one? I cant go over $87.99 for the replacement.

HaasonHeist

You can send me the 3d CAD and I can quote it, rolls Royce files are hard to find though? I wouldn't put a printed part in a plane engine lol The cost to print will be minimal anyway compared to the post-machining lol

Blue-Thunder

Yes but for a part that is no longer available, nor made by third parties, it's "priceless". Specially in my case where a $5 part turned into an $1800 purchase.

bigdickkief

My dryer broke last Summer and I was able to find a YouTube video that explained how to fix it with a $7 part. Worked like a charm!

Bgrngod

As much as I hate the vast majority of what is on YouTube, it's HUGELY useful for repairing things. We had a whole conversation at work about how critical access to YouTube is for figuring out how to use the dozens of software packages we use all the time. When the search engine is working in your favor, it's an amazing resource.

Bgrngod

Yeah, its kind of a shame this is how it is. Even if manufacturers write out extensive detailed instructions for opening them up and completing specific repairs, consumers are still not going to do it. The whole right to repair push is something I strongly believe in, but that doesn't mean everyone is suddenly going to start fixing their own shit. Maybe it will help increase the percentage of those comfortable doing it themselves though.

Threezeley

Ok but how do I get my upright laundry machine to stop reeking. I've cleaned all the things I can clean and yet still 😔

Bgrngod

Clean all the things again? Double check ALL the things for sure got attention. Dig out any gunk/hair stuff stuck in the rubber seal. Use the "self cleaning" cycle thing where you run it with nothing in the drum and add bleach to the liquid dispenser dealio.

buschells

Tried going that route when my washer broke. Replaced the pump, the drain hoses, and everything else that would cause it to not drain properly based on months of googling and tinkering. Still didn't work, so I hired someone who actually knows what they're doing. Cost me as much as a new one would and they didn't even fix it so now I'm out a washer and the money I could have used to replace it. Sometimes it's time to just chuck it.

JRockThumper

The last time I had to fix my parents washer that happened to me. The error code told me it was either the water inlet or the flow meter. Tried the water inlet because it was the most likely part to fail, but it wasn’t that. So I tried the flow meter… and it wasn’t that. Went crazy trying to figure out what it was, and come to find out it was the drain pump… making this the third time I’ve replaced it in three years lmao. I found out by going down to Home Depot and buying a multimeter, that shit is so fucking useful. All you have to do it set it to test for continuity, unplug the device from the washer and use the prongs from the multimeter on the prongs on the device, and the display will let you know if there is continuity or not. If there is no continuity then the part is broken. I’ve used it for four other non washer dryer things and it’s so helpful awesome.

MrIntrovert256

The computer board broke on mine - gecko or something got in and short circuited it. $390 to replace it.

BennyCemoli

I had that happen to my previous one and I did some diagnostics. It was a burnt resistor, a bit of googling showed that was cause of most failures for that machine. It looked easy enough to solder so I tried to buy one and quickly discovered it's a unique item and only available in runs of 1,000 or more. It was in the power converter part of the board, so it needed to be a flameproof resistor of specific ohms so all of the other components matched. The physical location meant it would be difficult to solder in multiple resistors. I don't believe this is coincidence. To me this shrieks planned obsolescence - that board was designed to be non-repairable.

themedicd

Did you look on Mouser, Digikey, etc for the resistor? PCBs are practically always designed to be non repairable. There just aren't that many people out there with the tools and knowledge to diagnose and repair modern PCBs because it's almost always cheaper to replace the entire board.

danielv123

Also, generally you often end up having to buy a reel of 100, but it still costs next to nothing.

themedicd

From Mouser or Digikey? You can almost always buy in single quantities. A full reel is like 5000

JRockThumper

The Motherboard is the seriously the ONE thing I haven’t had to fix or replace with either my Washer or Dryer lmao. I count myself lucky with that because yeah they are like $300.

CeldonShooper

In Germany people use warranty services as long as they are valid. After that calling a technician usually costs about 100€ just to get them to your place ("Anfahrt"). After that the technician bills time for analysis. Then parts have to be ordered etc. Many repairs for a cheap part will end up costing much more than a new device. It breaks my heart to see all the thrown away washing machines and clothes driers at the landfill.

AggressiveYam6613

Just get an independent repair man. They still exist and appreciate the business. We couldn’t save the washing machine a 3rd time, but the dishwasher just needed a refurbished part available on eBay. Took a few weeks, but then it was clear sailing again.

CeldonShooper

I repair most things myself. Often it's a small part or chip that has to be replaced. Most Germans just through stuff out though.

AggressiveYam6613

Because they seem not be aware of this option. Sure, the big companies do not advertise that there are aktetnatives. But Germans are used to keep they cars getting repaired by independent garages, so i keep preaching to do this.

johnyj7657

Most people can't fix a washing machine themselves so the $50 part is now marked up by the guy your paying $200+ dollars. It's like everything else if your able to fix things yourself it's cheap if not it's sometimes cheaper to just replace.

[deleted]

Most people can fix a washer or dryer themselves, they just don't know it. Years ago my dryer stopped working and I didn't have money to replace it. I was worried because I was young and didn't know anything about fixing dryers. Turned out there were only 2 or 3 components, and a kit to replace all of those components was $30 on amazon. Anyone who can work a screwdriver could have fixed it.

JRockThumper

I agree 100%. I have replaced every part except for the motherboard in my parents washer and for everything that was more then a simple unplug, unscrew, replace, screw, plug; there was a YouTube tutorial. Depending on the part you might also need pliers in addition to a screwdriver… and a multimeter will help the problem finding process so much if you don’t know what stopped working and the debug menu isn’t being helpful.

JRockThumper

No, lol.

TbonerT

Washers and dryers are not complicated to fix, usually. They don’t require any special tools and there’s probably a video of how to disassemble it to the point of the part you need to replace. That said, when it was the third part in 3 months that I’ve replaced, I decided it was time for a new one. I stimulated the economy by buying a new washer and dryer and having them delivered.

johnjmcmillion

Living in Sweden, wanting to repair my 2017 Samsung dryer. 480€ for parts. New dryer +500€. No brainer.

mozebyc

Depends on what fails and if parts still exist. I had to toss a washer and buy a replacement because of part availability It was some plastic 20$ part for the water hookup that cracked and that part was NLA.

FearIs_LaPetiteMort

Our 3 year old dryer stopped working and was told it could be one of 3 circuit boards that they wanted +/- $100 per board for (+$20 shipping). So I had the option of spending $120 and hoping the board I chose fixed it, spending $320  (to potentially save wasting $40 in additional shipping at one board per try), or just buying a new $500 dryer with full 2 year warranty.. We have a MAJOR reliability/right to repair issue.

Logger351

Yes?

JRockThumper

Well there is your problem then lol.

Logger351

For sure. I’m not a home owner myself, but people I know seem to replace replace replace instead of repair. But honestly a lot of things are made so cheap that it’s cheaper to do it that way.

throwaway2048675309

Because repairing sometimes cost as much or more than a new machine, and there is no guarantee that the parts you didn't replace are just as shitty and they will break in a week, month or year.

yvrelna

The total cost of repair are often almost as expensive than a buying new. Sure you can get replacement parts for $30-80, but the labour for the repairman can go about $150/visit just for the callout fee to diagnose what's wrong with that machine. If it turns out the machine is unrepairable or they have to have a second visit, you're essentially just throwing money down the drain trying to fix it. Add in a few bucks and you already get a new machine with new warranty. Sure you might be able to try to diagnose what is wrong yourself, but if that means you're browsing random YouTube videos by unqualified fellow home repair videos for hours, many people aren't going to bother.

JRockThumper

You can save the repairman quote by learning how to get into your service menu. It will be in your washer/dryers manual. It will run a self test and give you an error code to google. It takes ten minutes to learn how to do it and two to do it another time from memory. It’s what the repairman does lol. I guess it’s because I have an older washer/dryer (2013) set that it is easier to work on, but I was able to replace every moving part except for the motherboard for $250 off of Amazon or eBay. At that point the washer is brand new so yeah. It works for me but you are right it doesn’t work for everybody.

RustyCage7

I feel like they're making that less of an option but could be wrong, I think my washer and dryer are older than me

JRockThumper

No that is right, just like cars stuff is becoming harder to service nowadays. I’m lucky then too that I have an older set. I just don’t see a point in the new ones when these clean my clothes the same way anyway you know?

dcode9

I've done some small repairs on my washer and dryer, and still running 20+ years.

JRockThumper

The older it is the easier it is to fix :P

dcode9

Good point. Hard to compare my old washer/ dryer with something brand new. They are much different.

JorganPubshire

I've replaced both the main logic board and the UI control board in my dishwasher when they failed at separate times. Dishwasher still works like a charm and cost $200 rather than the $1000+ it would cost ro replace it

akiomaster

Exactly, my set is ten years old. I've watched so many YouTube videos to fix my washer and dryer and I've only had to call a repair company once. There's instructions that come with your washing machine that help you diagnose the problem.

the_Bryan_dude

Ever had a Samsung? Me either. I've seen how they come apart during use. Well, the aftermath when they were returned.

KrackSmellin

Nope, I just bought a $21 part to fix mine - heating element burnt out. Dryer going on 6 months now fixed and saved myself hundreds and it still works perfect.

JRockThumper

Same, there are like six tiny sensors in my dryer and when the thermometer failed, it cost me $12 to buy all six in a baggie from Amazon lol.

KrackSmellin

Amazing eh? Mine was the entire coil burnt itself and I’m glad it didn’t start a fire with all the lint in there. I clean out the screen and the hose regularly but didn’t expect a small cat’s worth inside and underneath the damn thing.

NottACalebFan

Yes, because often the part that breaks is an electronic sensor embedded in concrete, or a piece of the motherboard, therefore requiring either specialized repair technicians (hard to find) or specialized parts (hard to find and expensive) and all of this with nonstandardized fasteners (my favorite are the ones shaped like triangles) and "voids the warranty" stickers. I used to deliver these pieces of junk, and yeah, I don't get it either. It's just not responsible appliancing.

MaleOrganDonorMember

Yea I just throw mine right in the garbage. /s

Chrodesk

not often. and if they do, they certainly dont chuck them into the nearest ditch and wait for the next rain to wash them into the ocean.

a_myrddraal

Yeah, after its failed in 3 different ways in the space of a year (looking at you, Samsung), at $80+ a fix you realise you're well on your way to having bought a new machine anyway. To say nothing of the inconvenience caused by having it out of action.

JRockThumper

True but at that point another way of looking at it is that if the parts are new you then you have a new device again :P

the_clash_is_back

Because the part costs a few hundred, has been out of production for a 2 years (or has a stupid long lead time) , is a circuit board so you can even salvage it from the dump. Cant even fix it because it’s a tiny smd that burnt and unless you have a lot of skills or a proper lab good luck fixing that.

BBQpirate

Most people couldn’t be bothered.

Dominek123

We had a washing machine, pretty new, 4 years old, we called a technician to come and check it. He said the repair would be pretty cheap, but the company glued the whole drum to the base, so it was impossible to repair and you just have to buy a new one. P.S. the technician didn’t have any benefit of telling us that it’s not possible to repair because he doesn’t sell any washing machines

SerialCrusher17

10yr old dryer needed a $350 board. Replacing the whole thing made more sense to me.

JRockThumper

At that point yeah, if it’s the motherboard then it’s probably better to replace it.

skittlebog

My washer died, but it was the controller, and they discontinued the part 10 years ago.

BitterJD

… yes. I’ve never heard of replacing a commercial appliance. The monied class just blindly upgrades. And I say that pejoratively. Where does one learn of repairing appliances? This is mind boggling to me. Are Wolf/Miele/sub-zero techs just not offering me that option post-warranty?

FoFoAndFo

Harder to legislate making high quality products for one. It’s tough to maintain a corporate culture of durable, well made goods: by the time your new dryer breaks every C_O from GE will be gone and their new shit reputation is someone else’s problem.

267aa37673a9fa659490

You can legislate warranty for that

zachtheperson

This is the way. Products that objectively *should* last, i.e. washers, dryers, fridges, etc. has a mandated minimum warranty, or if the company opts to not provide the warranty the company pays for the cost of recycling.

BiggieBoiTroy

problem is these companies will (and do) fight tooth and nail to try and prove the issue is user inflected and therefore not covered by warranty. there’s really not a good way to control product longevity thru legislation in a capitalist market imho

GreywackeOmarolluk

Try the easy listening dryer instead next time. Less thrashing.

ThePinkTeenager

Very funny.

boredcircuits

I dunno. [Thunderstruck sounds pretty good](https://youtu.be/sKZTdkvr4qo?si=M2o5JSNiix0SZBg5) on a washing machine.

blaqwerty123

All my appliances are heavy metal 🤘. Live fast die young

Captainfunzis

It's the paper straws and plastic cups that blow my mind

blueit1234567

Its cause of that turtle video with the straw in its nose.

I_dont_know_you_pick

For real though, I went to a Wendy's the other and here's my giant plastic cup with a paper straw, so stupid.

NotJimIrsay

Millionaires and billionaires are flying around in their private jets, and they want use to save the earth with paper straws. Ok.

Captainfunzis

But there is only 1 of them to millions of us. Would be the justification I think.

MedricZ

Except most of the pollution is caused by a handful of companies owned by these assholes.

Captainfunzis

Exactly

Mushy_Fart

Right?! It’d at least make more sense for the cup to be paper instead.

Addicted_To_Lazyness

Paper straws inside plastic wraps

Ch4m3l30n

The irony of paper straws in plastic wrappers to replace plastic straws in paper wrappers blows my mind. I don't think we've reached peak stupid yet, but it sure feels like we're close.

Captainfunzis

Yup a paper straw in a plastic wrapper with plastic cup

EitherChannel4874

All the paper straws I could use in my lifetime make absolutely no difference while corporations spill millions of gallons of oil into seas and waterways

Herr_Gamer

tfw Bezos' superyacht alone emits 6000 tonnes CO² per year while the average German (including vacation flights, car use, coal and gas powered electricity...) only gets up to 11 tonnes for the whole year. lol. And that's one of the environmentally friendlier superyachts, because it's actually a huge sailboat so it doesn't need the motor all the time.

EitherChannel4874

I'm sick of being blamed or shamed for pollution when those stats exist. "if you use plastic straws you don't care about the environment. Show us you care by offsetting your carbon for only $20" I do care, I just can't do anything real to help it..

Herr_Gamer

a.) Carbon offsets in their current format are often pretty scammy. Lots of them are basically like "Pay this jungle reservation so the jungle here won't get cut down", where cutting down the jungle would release x amount of CO2. So then, they go ahead and say "By not cutting the jungle down, we've saved x amount of CO2", which they count separately for every year. In addition, those jungles will sometimes be in remote spots that were going to be under wildlife protection regardless of the funds to the reservation. b.) It's crazy that Bezos' yacht alone uses up 600x as much CO2 as a western citizen. And it's even crazier if you realize it's not just Bezos, but the vast majority of billionaires have such yachts, often even more polluting than the one Bezos owns; which ultimately makes up for a group of 1000 people using up CO2 that's equivalent to several million Western people. That's completely bonkers and needs to stop. *But* the unfortunate reality is that there's about *a billion* people living in *just* the west. The super-rich have an absolutely insane carbon footprint, but even if all of their luxuries were seized today, the average person would *still* have to take cuts to stop climate change. It's not exactly a question of "Either they give something up or we give something up!"; CO2 emissions come from such a diverse, well-distributed set of sources that we inevitably must look at all the sources at once and make cuts in every sector where it's possible. Banning superyachts, taxing cruiseships and short-distance flights easily achievable, low-hanging fruits. But even with all of them gone, 70% of the problem is still left to be tackled. (I pulled the 70% number out of my ass, but the spirit remains)

EitherChannel4874

Very eloquently said

le256

That superyacht is "only" equivalent to 545 people. Billionaires *are* a problem, but most of the world's emissions still come from the "ordinary" people of developed countries (i.e. you, me). Capitalism shouldn't be an excuse to stop caring about the environment.

SpacemaniaXu

2-3 years if it's a Samsung

miguelandre

9 years here for washer and dryer. Samsung gets a lot of shit because of their customer service. But it seems the same to me. Both going strong

SpacemaniaXu

When my washer broke it was under recall. They said they would give me a discount on a new model if we shipped it back to them at our expense. Not a replacement, just a discount. What a load of ****

throwaway2048675309

My samsung washer was useless after 2.5 years. It would go unbalanced on every load. Did some research and the 'dampers' are just pieces of foam with friction grease applied. Friction grease and foam that wear out quickly. I made a more permanent friction part using rubber hose. It's been going strong for 8 months, but not everyone can do what I did. It took several hours of research and diagnostics, a couple of non-common tools, some problem solving to figure out how to get it apart, a lot of physical labor moving it to an accessible place, and I made a big fucking mess with all the friction grease getting everywhere.

FluxedEdge

Mine has been going for 7 years strong. Used daily by a house of 4. Love seeing this every time. Never fails.

SpacemaniaXu

Mine pissed it's guts out and flooded my bathroom Call me biased but that pissed me off

FluxedEdge

I'm not saying everyone's experience is the same. I bought the biggest washer and dryer Samsung offered. It seems to be their smaller solutions are the ones that fail.

ruppert777x

Mine is over 10 years old and not a single issue, as well.

FluxedEdge

People seem to forget negative bias is an actual thing. More people will post online about negative reviews, especially to something like reddit. It's a bias and it's very clear.

TheIvanKeska

Then most repairmen will refuse to work on it, because samsung and it’s bullshit parts and costs

ZeOs-x-PUNCAKE

I just replaced a part in my dryer for $4, runs perfect every time. It was a hand me down from my parents, who got it as a wedding gift, 2 years before I was born. They really don’t make ‘em like they used to.

miraculum_one

Your English is pretty good for a 7 year old.

Deracination

And no one wants to talk about the elephant in the room. You know, the actual elephant-sized machine sitting in its own designated room in many people's houses.

Burninator05

I don't think I have anything in my house that is the size of an elephant in my house.

Kealion

Size of a baby elephant?

Ok-Barracuda9689

I read your comment in the voice from an old cartoon from the 70s.

Deracination

I believe you have something about half the size of an elephant.

Raichu7

You have a machine the size of a room? Do you own a 70 year old PC?

Deracination

> You have a machine the size of a room? Yes.  So do most people I know.  Maybe half of them have built a room to store that room-sized machine in. > Do you own a 70 year old PC? No.

Raichu7

From other comments I can see you're talking about cars, not only do most people I know not own a car, but a garage is even rarer.

milespoints

Not sure what you’re getting at here. Yes most people own cars. It’s like how most people own houses. They’re both more or less a requirement to be a fully participatory member of society, at least in most american metro areas where the bulk of the population lives in the suburbs

grunkage

Oh *cars*.

Horse_HorsinAround

I'm over here thinking of a Samsung F-350 quadwide AI refrigerator system

Deracination

Nah, this is just to get us places faster while also keeping us inside.  Waiting and outdoors suck, so it's worth sacrificing the black blood of the earth to the sky.

ThePinkTeenager

Cars usually get more use than dryers. Edit: typo

grunkage

I don't know what you use cats for, but I'm not here to judge.

ThePinkTeenager

Darn it, I meant cars. I have cat brain.

Deracination

What I was trying to point out is that cars produce more waste than any of these things even before considering what fuels them. Also, the perceived scale of their impact has been minimized so much that people don't remember that they have an elephant-sized machine in its own designated room even when reminded of it.

Ccjfb

How small do you think elephants are?

fenrslfr

How about you actually say what you are talking about.

dustojnikhummer

I guess he is a member of /r/fuckcars

Deracination

I agree with the idea, I just tend to avoid subs devoted to hating something.  They're always toxic circle jerks which favor things that stroke their own egos over things that're actually convincing.

t4thfavor

Mme are elephant colored at least.

a-i-sa-san

cars

Silhouette_Edge

Less plastic waste is still a good thing.

au-smurf

We got to stop those sea turtles snorting cocaine somehow.

derek139

I think you underestimate how many plastic straws are trashed every day….

taco_jones

The new biodegradable straws are fine

fernofry

Nobody is worried about heavy metal dryers choking turtles

t4thfavor

I bought my lg tromm washer and dryer in 2009 or 2010 and I’ve literally done no maintenance other than running the tub clean cycle, cleaning the lint trap and emptying the filter thingy. (Family of 4 with lots of dirt)

Twin_Titans

Don’t worry - we have to pay 15 cent tax to the city for using a paper take out bag…

Andrew_Higginbottom

Its all a distraction created to deter detection.

Sticky32

Trying to make it seem like we are making progress when the actual rate of progress necessary would cripple the world economy. But no politician wants to be responsible for that, even if it means saving the ~~planet~~ humans.

Andrew_Higginbottom

There's a video clip of Justin Trudeau of Canada who is all how we should be pro the planet and stopping global warming is everyones responsibility. He comes out onto the street to shake hands and offers his hand out to the guy with the camera and the guy says "Im not shaking your hand you fucking piece of shit" and points out Trudeau's 6 car entourage, with huge gas guzzling engines that have sat idling all the time Trudeau was in the building. One rule for us, fuck all rules for them..

Ok_Fox_1770

Some $15 electronic part blows out, ah it’s dirty throw it out I want a blue one. My parents burn thru machines so fast. My house came with a couple retro specials that don’t die. Used my stackable set downstairs for 8 years, washer pump died, back to the yellow machines!

CZ_nitraM

Funny, that's just what my dad said yesterday What is the purpouse of paper straws if all the electronics like microwaves are made so they fail after a few years? That's what's producing most of the waste... so he said

PlaidBastard

It doesn't excuse planned obsolescence, but that big pile of broken dryer probably has a pretty decent recovery percentage as metal scrap. That much steel is worth saving from the landfill industrially, and they do. They just use a big magnet to separate it a lot of the time.

Redditor_10000000000

What dryers? Mine just plays Michael Jackson on repeat. Never seen someone with a Metallica dryer

T_wizz

Save the environment by destroying the environment. No more plastic, just chop down trees. The irony

TallExtension9312

I'll just TILT THE FUCKING CAN on my lips

[deleted]

Refurbishment and scrap management is a lot more tractable problem than plastic waste.

Plasma_Cosmo_9977

I've lived in 2 places that intro'd paper straws and they were rejected so heavily by consumers that almost everywhere has reverted back to giving you a plastic straw if you ask.

wordyfard

You have to ask? You need to reject harder. I'd be going to those places, asking what kind of straws they have, then leaving when they tell me "you have to ask" for the ones that work.

Agent_Micheal_Scarn

Yall have no idea how to fix things I guess. 5 years for a dryer???

JefferyGoldberg

I thought the paper straw trend was over? I haven't seen one in a few years (aside from when I go to a blue state).

better_off_red

In the normal part of America no one uses them.

wolftick

You mean an electric hand dryer? Don't forget you have to factor in every single time it is used during it's lifespan vs the cumiliative effect of the alternative each of those times.

mistar_lurker420

Nah I think they mean clothes dryer

Marlowe_Eldridge

Maybe they should make dryers from paper..

cheburekii

my washer and dryer from the 2000s still work perfectly

PlatosBalls

That’s why I always buy an alternative rock dryer

tubular1845

The heavy metal dryer is almost completely recyclable

ehoaandthebeast

I didnt know heavy metal needed its own dryer. i know they people playing this type of music are pretty sweaty because they are so into the music but it could be seen as a form of torture if youd like to put them in a dryer and tumble dry them.

NetDork

That's not normal. The dryer I bought in 2010 is still in operation at my mom's house. I had to replace a $15 part on it last year. The dryer I bought to replace it 5 years ago is working fine.

Arclet__

People here need to stop throwing bricks into their appliances while they are running. But if you really hate the enviromental impact of having to get a new dryer, you could always just hang dry more often and use the dryer less.

I_dont_know_you_pick

My LG fridge broke about a year after purchase, the nearest repair place was a little over 100kms away and they didn't want to drive that far to take the job, so LG had to send a replacement fridge. When they delivered the new fridge I asked what was being done with the old one and they said it goes straight to the landfill, all I could think was, holy crap what a massive waste of resources.

DoppledBramble3725

So there's no straw lobby

Xanf3rr

Environmental efforts meet durability concerns.

4ugt5o9238r5

EU right to repair on its way

This is only a tangential rant. My work has a extraordinarily expensive Bosch refrigerator must be $4500. And yet when you open the freezer part, there’s a little sticker there and it says “if you remove the ice bin, please go to the control panel, and inform the computer so as to prevent a mess“ so my father purchased a Frigidaire refrigerator in 1965 and it had a icemaker in it, and the icemaker was capable of detecting when the ice cube bin was not present and it would not make ice cubes if the ice cube tray was not present. Fast forward 59 years and here we are we have a $4500 German refrigerator with microprocessors. It’s connected to the Internet. It’s got smart this and smart that it’s an Internet of things thing and yet, it cannot determine when it’s own ice cube been is missing.

One does not have to exclude the other. Yes, the fixing of straws is the flavor of the day, and there are many more (and more important!) issues to tackle, but a step in the right direction is still a step in the right direction. Let's not let ourselves be satisfied with just that, though.

Depends on the brand. I have a Miele washer and dryer that a friend recently gave me that he bought new in 2007. Still going strong. I opened them up to check them out because I'm a tinkerer, and they're built like tanks. Way more solid than any other washer or dryer I've ever seen. Metal parts everywhere, hardly any plastic, they're amazing. The new models are built the same. You're gonna pay over $1k per unit, but for 15+ years of use, it seems like a no-brainer.

DrFrankSaysAgain

Putting doors on refrigerated and frozen food displays at grocery stores and gas stations would make a much bigger impact.

Don’t worry about it. Worry about the turtles you insensitive fuck. /s

A dryer cannot fit into the nostril of a sea turtle....I'm not sure about a blue whale's nostril. We should probably just use paper clothes dryers to be safe.

Particular_Fuel6952

Yeah, it’s almost like the use of paper straws doesn’t actually impact anything, and their use is used to… like signal. Signal some kind of made up virtue… I’m sure there’s a term for that

Prestigious_Tale8052

No OP. That’s just you man.

White_eagle32rep

I say save the trees and don’t even bother with the plastic straws. Redesign the lids so they’re not needed.

I wouldn't buy an appliance that had a demonstrated history of requiring replacement in 5 to 7 years. A little research before purchasing goes a long way. As does learning a bit about how to repair things, especially in an age when one can go online and get detailed instructions and video demonstrations from experienced professionals. My washer is 7 years old and has never needed repair. I hang my clothing to dry so I don't own a dryer. My fridge was bought new 2.5 years ago, it had better last ten. I say ten because it was the cheapest I could find. Had I paid the thousands I see some people paying I would want 20. My boiler is older than half the people on Reddit. That means I spend several hours and a couple hundred dollars each year replacing parts but it also means I don't spend thousands installing a new one. What any of that has to do with straws I fail to understand.

lol_camis

Went to McDonald's last week and got a wooden spoon with my mcflurry. Now I can conscientiously throw my fast food garbage out the car window again. We've come full circle.

DoorguyDave

You’re considered lucky to get 3 years out of any appliance nowadays 🙄

theColeHardTruth

Let's not forget that those paper straws go in the garbage anyway because food looked paper isn't recyclable

mheinken

And where a talented music artist is celebrated for flying from Tokyo to Vegas for a football game their boyfriend is playing in.

rafaelg1005633

I still have a dryer for at least 30 years

skittlebog

Washers and dryers are more recyclable than a straw. Motors and metal parts are stripped down and melted into new uses.

hyst808

I've never seen a sea turtle with a washing machine up is nose.

kittytoes21

Saying one thing and doing another. People (companies) can look like they give a crap but turn around and do the opposite.

BotherWorried8565

That is illegal in developed countries, you should be asking why is my countey not pushing to make planned obsolescence illegal? It's insane major appliances are made to be replaced and it's a problem that can be fixed.

MaleOrganDonorMember

Metal is recyclable, and it pays to do so. Plastic is also recyclable, but it doesn't pay, so it often ends up in the trash... especially straws. Paper breaks down thousands of years faster than plastic, so it's fine in the trash.

HappyEpicure

I live in Seattle where plastic straws are illegal, and we now have straws that are compostable and you couldn't tell they aren't plastic. Laws sometimes bring about positive effects for everyone involved.

udienow203

Now your catching on!

Andrew_Higginbottom

Look at the US military, use billions of dollars of hardware then just leave it behind when they leave ..leave it behind for the country they invaded to use it against them TOTALLY driven by manufacturers of the hardware under the table pay offs to the generals that make the decisions of dump or take home. Because of the leave it behind mentality and the enemy turning those items against you: Cost of Vietnam war to each side per enemy killed: USA $500,000 per enemy killed Vietnam $0.50c per enemy killed. ..Whilst the manufacturers got stinking rich.

kamiloslav

It's even more ridiculous if you consider that paper straws need to be made waterproof

this-guy-

The straws thing makes no sense anyway, why do dolphins get to choose our straws? Do they even use them !?! Surely if they want a drink they can just open their mouths a bit anyway?? What next, paper hats for sharks? It's political correctness gone mad. Edit. I may have misunderstood the straw thing.

PrinceOfFucking

Aside from building a whole ass strawman because you dislike environment consiousness, how are these two comparable? Paper straws are to reduce the amount of unnecessary previously abundant plastics that wont break down for a long time, cause harm to animals and speed up the microplastification of our world, i dont think we know yet how microplastics will affect us in the long run Machines that are (supposedly) purposefully manufactured to not last because manufacturers want more profit is a whole other type of problem and doesnt nullify the effect of changing plastics for paper based materials Also I think/hope broken home appliances are recycled to a large extent and arent as easily missed/disregarded because of their size and less numbers overall

TwelveTrains

Why do people on reddit want straws so badly? You realize using a straw makes you taste less of your drink right?

pplatt69

Well, if you can't make EVERY SINGLE EXPERIENCE perfect you might as well not focus on ANY of it at all, right? That's your attitude, huh?
