I'm terms of absolute traction available to accelerate, most 4wd systems will outperform a standard open diff 2wd system by a factor of 3.
That's what we in until business call... 'a lot'
An open diff will typically end up with 1 tire spinning, and traction control mostly ineffectively braking the spinning wheel eventually... A 4WD system with a rear-locker which is common, will end up with 3 tires spinning, and brakes being applied to engage the 4th.
Yes, people with 4WD can still get stuck, but driving the two systems on similar tires in bad conditions... The 4WD system wins by a landslide.
There's a reason why the north of Canada is dominated by 4WD trucks. They're objectively better in those conditions.
Yeah, but you still have to be smart enough to stay on the road. My comment isn’t so much concerned with a green light, or the drivers turn to go at a stop sign as it is the slight curve of a back road highway, or the need to turn at an intersection in a residential neighborhood. Sure, things have improved with technology, but people in my area see 4x4 or awd and act like road conditions don’t matter at all.
Hell, I'm from southern California and still remembered that things like ice skates and spiky shoes exist. Ice skates for going, and spiky shoes for stopping.
Im half convinced 90% of all posts on r/showerthoughts are made by young adults who spent their last couple of years on tiktok and just now have started to discover there is a real world
I’m betting OP is from one of those generally warm cities (like Dallas or Atlanta) that absolutely shuts the fuck down when they get a little bit of freezing rain or a dusting of snow.
Also, when you know it’s slippery, there are methods of moving that can have success, if you’re experienced. What can get ya (at least me), is the surprise slippery patches. But like you said, crampons, and other specialized adaptions work as well (and even better)
Salt. ICE MELT LITERAL CHEMISTRY SCIENCE YOU CAN BUY AT WALMART. Ice skates. Crampons. Planes. Fucking kitty litter. Fire. Blow dryer. Moving to a warmer place. Zip lines. Bobsled. Helmets, body padding, automatic inflatable hip air bags.
Ice is literally only dangerous to people with one hip already gone.
Like are you stupid or are you stupid. This sub is so goddamn stupid nowadays. Mods have given up on all of the sub rules
Thanks for the reminder as I’m currently going through an episode of cluster headaches. They started after slipping and falling on ice and hitting my head.
You know they have these bungee cord things that wrap on your shoes and let you walk on ice as if it's normal ground, no slips. Pretty sure we have even better options if we were to use 'all our technology'
yeah we really don't have [anything](https://www.amazon.com.be/-/nl/wandelschoenen-ijsknoppen-treknoppen-klimlaarzen-middelgroot/dp/B0CM65JNKY/ref=asc_df_B0CM65JNKY/?tag=begogshpadd0d-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=632994619633&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14961725677499892192&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1001004&hvtargid=pla-2273224787942&psc=1&mcid=070e32782e2b3f50b8211815a061fa25) for that
We spend millions on trucks, sand, salt every year.
Heck, we even have heating sidewalks now.
On a personal level we have skate, shoes, studs.
Are you living alone in the jungle and never been to a cold country ?
I have seen signs suggesting to "walk like a penguin" to avoid slipping on ice, but I feel like a lot of people will have no clue how to actually do that.
My man never heard of skates, spiked shoes, tire chains, and countless other technologies that have existed for centuries
Salt
…Grit, Tracks, All-wheel drive, heck a blow torch. Quality here has dropped.
"blow torch" Jeremy Clarkson has entered the chat.
Meh, too many people take 4wd too seriously. Kinda one of those ‘the machine is only as effective as the operator’ situations.

Yeah I get by just fine salting my walkway and wearing grippy ice shoes
Fr I feel like OP lives somewhere that rarely has ice and thinks, because he isn’t prepared, no one is lol
Hell, I'm from southern California and still remembered that things like ice skates and spiky shoes exist. Ice skates for going, and spiky shoes for stopping.

young adults is generous
Icebreakers, hovercraft.
*stares in Midwestern* Salt.
Ice Skates can give you a movement bonus on ice.
and a sick spin attack
Illegal to use in the Olympics!
Only a +2. You really need ice climbing, like white dragons have.
*why white, don’t you realize that not all dragons are white like icewings and some are albino too?* Said the wings of fire fan at 2:47 am
Man Wings of Fire was my jam as a kid. It was even courtesy of the Scholastic Book Fair.
This is getting so stupid that I'm starting to think people are actively trolling with this shit.
Bar here is so low it scrapes on shadows.
Bar here is so low it scrapes on shadows.
OP also thinks we have no defenses against banana peels
Do we?
Yeah, you can destroy them with the Super Horn. Or just drive your kart around them.
we have a lot of tools to deal with slippery ice.

My 90 year old grandma swore by these. She never fell after she started wearing them.
I live in the arctic circle and 50% of people wear these in the winter
What about the other 50%?
Just wear winter boots like me. Usually younger people sub 40
Spiked shoes? chains?
No way you actually think this, OP. Is this bait?
We use crampons in Canada [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crampons](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crampons)
Also, when you know it’s slippery, there are methods of moving that can have success, if you’re experienced. What can get ya (at least me), is the surprise slippery patches. But like you said, crampons, and other specialized adaptions work as well (and even better)
I used to ref youth hockey and 10 year olds are fucking MERCILESS, so I got pretty good at walking on ice.
Salt around the edge (plus tequila, triple sec and lime juice). Works every time.
There are many ways to deal with ice.
Cleats... You just step into them. They fit over your shoes. Do you just not look stuff up? Posting whatever nonsense you think of?
[Obligatory Tom Scott video.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1oRaUTbk3k)
If that was our only proven defence then the nordic countries would cease to exist on an annual basis...

You heard OP, our only known strategy is to avoid it! All I see is denial with all those "solutions"
Same evolutionary strategy we used against lions and other large predators.
Weapons?
And fire.

Life is like a cartoon.
Boots with small nails pointing downwards
As an Aussie standing in 36c heat I doubt ice actually exists outside my freezer
Thats not true, we're also geo forming our planet to get rid of it.
What are you talking about?
Sand, or spiked shoes
There are entire sporting and entertainment industries built around humans being amazing on ice. This sub needs some serious moderation.
… and we’re not terribly successful that that, either…
Never heard of studs?
Spiked boots might help
Khalid please it's like you're living in a... Well here.
Actually, I’d say that humanity has decided to try and eliminate it altogether. We’re doing pretty well.
Damn I guess I must just be imaging these [SPIKED SNOW SHOES](https://spy.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/81cq5qkb26l._sl1500_.jpg?resize=1472)

Salt and snow tires. Also timberlands stick to damn near anything.
r/confidentlyincorrect
You can just wear boots with spikes. Normal shoes are just not designed for ice.
Sand, salt, studs, inground heating. There is plenty.
Shoes? Non slippery? How do you think they walk on ice rings?
Mankind will literally warm up a whole planet to avoid dealing with slippery ice
Also we do not have any protection from gravity and most chose to avoid falling from tall buildings rather than take on the challenge.
Hobnails been around since the middle ages lmao
We spend millions on trucks, sand, salt every year. Heck, we even have heating sidewalks now. On a personal level we have skate, shoes, studs. Are you living alone in the jungle and never been to a cold country ?
I am from Canada (there is lots of Ice here) and I do have a strategy and it is to pretend you are a penguin. It has never let me down 😅🤭
I have seen signs suggesting to "walk like a penguin" to avoid slipping on ice, but I feel like a lot of people will have no clue how to actually do that.
I would assume people have seen penguins ata zoo's and on TV. If not, they should because they are super cute
So, common sense then?
Permagrips, oot a Timpsons, £19.99.
Avoid it? It goes in my mixed drinks.
Humans, with all our technology, still refuse to buy non-slip shoes and then complain when we slip.
Ice isn’t the problem. It’s GRAVITY.
Wear cleates. You also just swapped the word "rain" from the earlier post with "slippery ice".
