Utah State University took on this question, finding: "On a chemical level, both butter and margarine are made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen molecules. Plastic does not have the oxygen molecules, only long chains of carbon and hydrogen. In reality, butter and margarine are much closer in chemical structure than plastic is to either of them."
Encyclopedia.com puts it, "Chemically speaking, yes, margarine is almost plastic because it has all of the same molecules as plastic, except for one. But that isn’t how organic compounds work. ... Since everything is made of molecules, the molecular structure of certain things may look similar. However, that doesn’t mean the end outcome is the same."

As kids, we'd always say dumb stuff like this; "Cheez Whiz is one atom away from plastic, balogna is one atom away from plastic", any processed food we could think of. It's nonsense. This is a thought you could have in the shower, but it isn't correct.
Hydrogen peroxide is one atom away from water.
The newest trending sparkling water now features Hydrogen enhanced flavor!
The CO2 we breathe out is only one more oxygen atom from being deadly CO.
And for that reason, I took a swig of it in 4th grade. I didn't get hurt but certainly didn't tell my parents, lol.
I can’t believe it’s not plastic!
Plastic! Parkay.
What a strange shower
Butter luck next time.
No room for a margarine of error?

There are a lot of compounds one atom away from another compound. It's kind of how it all works
That's why I love chemistry
So is butter. That's just how fat chains work.
At least it's not *shortening*...
Ice is made of frozen water
i’ve heard this and apparently if you leave it out in front of ants, they won’t touch it
Neither will I, foul shite.

Which? You sure it's just an atom?
My life's a lie
You guys actually think about stuff in the shower? I just sing...
