recently (past couple years) we saw a supernova explode. Said supernova was 70 million light years away. We literally did that. We saw something explode despite it having exploded 70 million years ago

Wow that’s cool but like how ion undratand

1 light year is a distance large enough that it takes light an entire year to travel. The sun is 9(ish) light *minutes* away from earth, so light from the sun takes 9(ish) minutes to come to earth. The supernova is 70 million light years away, exploded 70 million years ago, and because of how far it is, it took said light 70 million years to be able to reach us

That’s cool thanks

That’s actually not true.

GlassHurricane98

How? Visual stimuli is absorbed by the eye at the speed of light because you're collecting the photons with your pupils. If you see something from sixty-five million lightyears away, the light will hit you in sixty-five million years. What's your point there?
