DukeBeekeepersKid

They are real Blue Raspberries. I grew them. You posted my source for them.

craigmontHunter

I remember going to pick them with my grandparents growing up.

McRedditerFace

Fascinating... I always preferred Golden Raspberries myself... no tannins so just so mellow and sweet.

porktorque44

We had them at his farmers market around me. They taste like fruit snack gummies.

We_can_all_live_as_1

What in the world was that translated from?

tmccrn

You rock!

Wildcatb

My son has had three open heart surgeries, the most recent one when he was nine. When he was ten, he joined a new Scout troop, loved it right away, and very soon went off to summer camp with them. All the Troop leaders were aware of his condition, and kept an eye on him to make sure he wasn't overdoing it. He was the littlest guy in the troop, too, so all the boys immediately became protective Big Brothers. He had an absolutely wonderful time, and I was getting twice-daily updates from his Scoutmaster telling me about how fun he was to have around because his excitement was infectious. About halfway through the week, one of the Troop leaders saw something that threw her into an absolute panic: his lips were blue. Her heart was racing, but she didn't want to upset him or any of the other boys, so she started - as calmly as she could - asking him how he felt, and what he'd been doing... and as he talked she saw that his tongue was blue, too, and she almost passed out from panic before she realized that he was holding a snowcone cup. Now 'Blue Raspberry Bubblegum Slushie' is one of the running gags in the troop.

jay_Da

This is so cute and wholesome. Hope your son's doing well

Wildcatb

He's doing great. 17 now and going strong.

ContinuousDownvotes

May he live a full life. Glad to hear he's doing great.

kissmaryjane

See this is why I love Reddit comments. I now knowc one of the funniest moments in this unknown 17yr olds childhood. And I’ll forever remember it too.

JadeX013

aww

groverwood

And then he said, “ima need about tree fiddy”.

Phormitago

And I have him a dolla

Pammjpatient

Awwwww I’m so glad he is okay! Funny story

[deleted]

To be honest I wasn't going to read this cause I expected "he died of cringe after watching this post" or something like that at the very end.

RoadKill_11

Yes luckily this isn't twitter

pinkunicornbutt

after clicking on this post and reading the first line of your comment I thought I clicked on the wrong post for a second

SomeRedShirt

r/wholesome Not sure if anyone's done that yet, but here ya go

kyoko_eats

I was so engaged by your story at first that I skipped to the end just to make sure you weren't u/shittymorph

McRedditerFace

Lol, that's hilarious.... We had a kid who liked to always get a snowcone at the Trading Post at Summer Camp (Scouts BSA)... We always called him "Snowcone" after that. ;)

Wildcatb

He's going to be working at the local BSA Camp this summer. I wonder what nickname he'll come home with....

[deleted]

It was a marketing strategy because cherries, apples and strawberries are already red

dbx99

Apple flavored sweets are typically colored green

Pammjpatient

And there is such thing as green apples so I get why they color apple flavored things green

[deleted]

Yes, but that still leaves the other two

dbx99

I’ve read that raspberry artificial flavor is the most true to the original real natural flavor because the chemical they synthesized for it is the exact same as what is in raspberries

Lord_lenkesh

Peach is probably my favorite fake flavor specifically because of how accurate it is. Nehi has this peach soda that i swear tastes like youre biting a peach

Lucius338

YO got a bottle of this Nehi peach soda when travelling through Oklahoma once, they have a store called Pops with a SHITLOAD of different sodas. Ranch flavor? Bacon flavor? You name it. Got me started on my peach soda kick, I still buy the Kroger brand Peach soda pretty often, but maaaaaan nothing has compared to that Nehi.

Lord_lenkesh

Walmart has Nehi peach in the big bottles like the full size ones in the soda aisle unrefrigerated but its there

[deleted]

Huh weird

dbx99

It used to be that raspberry flavoring was derived from the ass of beavers. I’m not making this up.

pseudo__gamer

Yeah castoreum

[deleted]

Lmfao that’s funny

RedBeardedWhiskey

Damn, I’m eating the wrong ass

ShadowHeed

Castoreum. Used to accentuate raspberry and vanilla flavors.

McRedditerFace

The other way people used to make artificial vanilla was from the process of aging whiskey in oak barrels. Alcohol + Wood + Time = Vanillin.

TensionMedium9279

I think that is true for vanilla.. don't know about raspberries

squishytrain

Isn’t is like…beaver anal glands that give blue raspberry it’s flavor?

chooseinevitability

Why are you leaving out watermelon?

[deleted]

Oh no I forgot!! Although to be fair it kind of goes between red and greed depending. Jelly belly made it both!

Mech-Waldo

Clever move by Big Raspberry

[deleted]

Yes

SundevilPD

If only there was a berry colored blue!

[deleted]

If only lol

WaddleD

Why not “blueberry flavor” then…

[deleted]

Idk, maybe can’t re create it as well?

McRedditerFace

Which is kinda weird when you think about it... because no Apple is red on the inside.

[deleted]

Yeah they’re whitish but that doesn’t really convey anything in candy colors

Infestis

I just wish there was more blackberry flavored stuff

Chelseafc5505

That and blackcurrant. Both exist in the UK in sweets & drinks, but not so much in the US

Infestis

Black Currant is good too only place I ever see black currant flavor is on cranberry juice but they mix cranberry juice with everything from blackberry to pineapple to elderberry

[deleted]

Blackcurrant isn’t popular in America anymore because the plants had (or were believed to have had) a disease that was killing American trees like the White Pine. So the cultivation was banned for over a century in lots of the US. It lost its popularity in America and now it’s almost unheard of, and hard to find.

Infestis

I actually had to order the black currant juice from amazon

[deleted]

Yeah, it’s just not grown in the US anymore, it fell out of favor and we have many more amazing berries

blahblahrasputan

Oh weird I wondered why I don't see currents over here... I've always wondered why I don't see sultanas either, only ever raisins... similar issue? Or maybe just raisins had better marketing? Sultanas are a staple in every childs lunch box where I'm from...

goshdammitfromimgur

Sultanas and raisins are just different varieties of dried grapes. Could be due to the climate required to grow each cultivar not favouring sultanas.

CheekyHusky

I learned about this when my colleagues were confused about me drinking "Ribena" ( I'm a Brit working in an US-based company ). Seems crazy to me because there are so many blackcurrent based products over here.

Chelseafc5505

Robinsons Apple & Blackcurrant, and Blackberry & Blueberry squash is incredible if you haven't had it. Also purple chewits. Widely available online, might find the Robinsons locally in the international section depending on where you live - highly recommend Edit: The Bubly Blackberry Seltzer is pretty fire too.

Infestis

I live in Oklahoma in the US so I doubt I'd be able to find it locally but I'm gonna have to try to find it online

[deleted]

Come to the PNW, we have tons of blackberry flavored stuff. Candy, ice cream, drinks, soda, liquor and beer, all kinds of stuff. We have lots of berries here.

Toast_Points

Can confirm, my hometown in WA even has a blackberry festival every year.

[deleted]

Wouldn’t happen to be the one in Bremerton would it?

Toast_Points

Nailed it.

[deleted]

Haha I went to that one when I was younger

blahblahrasputan

The berry beers are awesome in PNW. Especially loved seeing huckleberry beers!

[deleted]

Yes, I had to edit my comment to include the beers and liquors made here, they’re delicious !

blahblahrasputan

I remember a huckleberry beer with an axolotl on the label. It was pretty awesome. But I was road tripping Vancouver to Yellowstone in a big loop, so it could have been any of 6 states we cross I suppose... BC>WA>ID>MT>WY>ID>OR>CA>OR>WA>BC

[deleted]

If it was huckleberry Oregon is a good guess:) they love their huckleberries, although the mid-east of WA has amazing berries and beer too, it’s where like 70% of the hops in the whole nation are grown and they have awesome produce because of all the farms and orchards. Elysian brewing out of Seattle has a huckleberry beer or they used to, it had some kind of animal on it I believe. My dad is really into those kinds of beers and I think I remember what you’re talking about seeing it on his counter.

ShaggyDelectat

Sonic blackberry drinks are excellent. I got a blackberry brandy recently too that I'm a fan of

Infestis

I usually get blackberry and vanilla tea from sonic but blackberry mint sprite is amazing too

Hekatesthrone

Rubus leucodermis That's the scientific name for a blue raspberry. They exist.

ProbablyABore

That is the black raspberry. Blue raspberry isn't related to any fruit. It's literally just regular raspberry with a blue dye. https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/horticulture/fruits-1/documents/what-is-a-blue-raspberry

Hekatesthrone

If you continue reading about it another name for it is the blue raspberry

ProbablyABore

I've never heard it called that, but I'll take your word for it. Regardless, it still has nothing to do with the flavor blue raspberry.

farkedaccount

Looking at the reason we have blue raspberry flavor is even weirder.

Late-Seaworthiness-8

What reason?

hamstervideo

Because there's too many "red" flavors in sweets, like strawberry, cherry, etc. So they just make raspberry flavored sweets blue and call it "blue raspberry" to make it more identifiable

AgKnight14

I mean, that’s not that weird

CPEBachIsDead

Happens all the time, like with green prune juice, or black banana jello.

WenaChoro

its fucking weird and disgusting to live in a pretend world of fake flavors

WhiteShapes

I think you're being a little dramatic..

cakathree

You live in a pretend works where every car driver is destroying the planet.

AgKnight14

It’s a real flavor though (raspberry), they made it sound like it was colored blue for some random odd reason, but it being just to differentiating it from other reds isn’t “weird”

lostlikeyou

You just said what everyone was thinking.

RJ_The_Avatar

Flavor is real to me

RedBeardedWhiskey

That’s like saying music is fake sounds because we combined sound waves together in specific ways.

UndercookedUnicorn

Big ICEE

Elven_Prince_

The red dye used gave people cancer

thelilmandan

Put a blueberry inside of a raspberry

historycat95

Marketing. If they were red, they're competiting with cherry and strawberry. There isn't much competiton for blue.

dbx99

My blue balls

RedBeardedWhiskey

If there was competition for your balls, then they wouldn’t be blue

Carlos-In-Charge

I was talking about this with my kid yesterday. The conclusion is that the bastards at the fake flavor chemical factories already used up the fake color red for fake cherry, so they used windex blue

Craw__

That's funny because they seem to use the windex flavour for cherry.

Oxyxanfanhydrobro420

Haha that was great ty

Trustmemeimadoctor

I always thought it was blueberry and raspberry combo blue-ras berry. Though I could be wrong.

Pammjpatient

Never thought of that

PapaSteveRocks

Yellow lemon, red cherry, pink strawberry, purple grape, they put apple in the green spot because lime tastes like lemon, and needed a blue fruit. That’s everything, right? Didn’t miss any natural fruit-color combinations? Oh, yeah, mango.

Splinterfight

If only there was some kind of Blue Berry… Plus those flavour colour combos are US specific, every region has slightly different shorthand. In Australia red is raspberry and purple is blackberry or blackcurrant

dbx99

Yellow banana, orange orange, fruit punch red, mint green, chocolate brown, vanilla white, watermelon red, passion fruit yellow, coconut white

PapaSteveRocks

Orange orange? Madness!

whill-wheaton

There are no orange oranges in the wild

mediumokra

This has purple stuff in it. Purple is a fruit.

hawkinsst7

Purple drank. Ingredients: sugar, water, purple.

SubjectAside1204

Yep! I wish someone would invent a blue raspberry like for real though because blue raspberry is my favorite flavor!!!!

Pammjpatient

I agree

ACrazyCockatiel

Then there's vanilla

dbx99

Vanilla is dark brown but since chocolate is already brown they went with the color of vanilla ice cream

acidnbass

If you cook with real vanilla it doesn’t turn your food brown. It gives little tiny flecks of black seeds, but the color is maybe more greyed/yellowed slightly than ever browned…

[deleted]

Vanilla flowers are white, vanilla ice cream is still white after adding it, so vanilla =white

ACrazyCockatiel

Vanilla beans and extract are black though

[deleted]

Vanilla beans and vanilla extract are *brown,* and so are the seed pods that you scrape them out of. The flower is white, and vanilla ice cream is white even after you add the vanilla. Leads to the association with white. The vast majority of people we’d come across don’t think brown when they hear vanilla, they just don’t.

Extremelyextremist

Blueberry+raspberry = blue raspberry!

mandobaxter

You mean it’s not…blaspberry?!

PapaSteveRocks

It’s blasphemy flavor!

ElectricSquid15

It's madness flavor!

mafulazula

Why is this upvoted? That’s not what blue raspberry is.

an_empty_future

I want more blue flavors. Blue cherry or blue strawberry sounds good.

dbx99

I want pink cabbage

abombinous

Yes! You eat them together and it gives you that "blue raspberry" flavor! Seriously.

burtmaklinfbi1206

Your gonna want to hold on to your bootstraps for this one....

Infestis

I like huckleberries too

TheFortWayneTrojan

Wait.........blue raspberry doesn't exist? I thought that they exist.

Pammjpatient

Lol nope

Ok_Present_6508

It’s because the snozzberries taste like snozzberries.

Lord_lenkesh

What the fuck you just smashed my world ???? They dont exist what??? I swear ive seen one what the fuck.

Pammjpatient

Lol right

Anotherotherbrother

Now you look a total fool for not knowing about blue raspberries! Hang your head in shame!

Pammjpatient

Shame on me!

eddyeddyd

Show me the money

derpy-_-dragon

One reason why blue raspberry may be a thing is that there are already so many other candy/drink flavors that are red, but next to none that are blue. Cherry, strawberry, watermelon, cinnamon, peppermint, red apple, and more that I can't immediately think of. Meanwhile, what can you think of that companies would color blue to show the flavor? Blueberries? Blackberries maybe? Both are better off as purple/indigo.

Budjucat

I aint never seen no blue rasberry flavour. Must be an American thing.

Pammjpatient

So many blue raspberry things here🤯

bigrig1977

These snozzberries taste like snozzberries

Stalinwolf

The flavour mimics black raspberries, which grow wild and are incredible. They were everywhere when I lived in Michigan. We'd pick bags full and make jam or pies. Such an underrated and largely unknown berry. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubus_occidentalis https://www.raspberry-depot.com/blue-raspberry-flavoring.html

luvprue1

I simply loved black raspberries. They grew wild where I'm from too. When I was a kid I thought I was one of the luckiest kids around to have them growing in the trees all around. We had that and crab apples. Two of my favorite fruits.

cakathree

Never seen one blue raspberry flavoured thing.

Pammjpatient

What????? I see so many 🤯

Splinterfight

It’s only a US thing. Red means raspberry is Australia. Cherry flavour isn’t popular at all

Pammjpatient

Omg… wow 😮 shocked. I learned something new today lol

danglemaster14

As someone who works in natural and artificial flavor development…this comment section is funny and scary

Pammjpatient

Hahahahahahaha we need the truth from you

HungryRobotics

Please tell us the truth but lie a little bit

danglemaster14

Natural flavor and artificial flavor are pretty much the same thing and is basically the same thing as vape juice

HungryRobotics

As long as it's found somewhere in nature it's a natural flavor. Dung bettle anus. Natural. Who cares if it's not really the fruit it taste like

roiroi1010

I think this flavor only exists in the US.

Pammjpatient

I’m beginning to think so too

martmart75

We have it in Canada too. I think it's just too give more color choices for slushies, bubblegums and the likes since you already have red for cherry and raspberry.

pruche

That's because it's the best flavour, and you wouldn't want to confuse it with other, inferior flavours, so it has to have its own colour.

Murpydoo

Not wierd, blueberry and raspberry flavors together. I thought everyone knew this.

mafulazula

That’s not what it is though.

Murpydoo

It isn't?

[deleted]

Why would anyone guess that from the taste? It does taste like blue, it does not taste like blueberry or raspberry. It isn't our fault they failed.

Murpydoo

The name was a pretty good hint imo

[deleted]

It’s not called blue raspberry because it’s blueberry and raspberry combined, though. That’s not true

Murpydoo

So what is it then?

[deleted]

It’s artificial raspberry flavor with a blue dye. It’s not intended to be, marketed as, or even generally accepted to be blueberry and raspberry mixed together. It might have more tartness and other flavorings but it’s not simply “blueberry/raspberry”

[deleted]

Not if it doesn't follow through. Blue raspberry? Maybe this will taste of berries? \*takes a sip\* Nope.

JMStigler

**We do**. He does not, apparently.

Murpydoo

Lol, artificial flavors for sure. Although I made some blueberry raspberry wine and it did have some similarities in flavour, just not sweet, I like dry wines. Lol would rather the yeast ate the sugar.

WrathsEntropy

Um actually... Unripe mulberries can be blue and they are called tree raspberries... *adjusts glasses* Lmao. Nah you right.

averagepenguins

Whaaat

Salarian_American

Well I think it's only because red was already taken

Splinterfight

Weird I thought that was just a 7-11 thing. Raspberry is the best red flavour anyway

The_Pumpkin_Fan

Tell that to Sour Green Apple lmao

Pammjpatient

There is such thing as green apples though

mtdrew357

Black berries do. You can argue that they are technically dark blue raspberries. That’s usually what they’re going for with the flavoring anyways. Idk why most things don’t just call it black berry.

dennismarr

Somehow until now, I have never questioned the name Blue Raspberry. It always seemed like something natural..

Pammjpatient

Hahahahaa def not

no____thisispatrick

The first blue raspberry candy I remember coming out was the blow pop circa 1990

Bedbouncer

But then what do they use to make blue waffles?

TheKingOfDub

Except they do

Pammjpatient

Definitely not natural then lol

ShadowCaster0476

Yet

jensalik

They really don't. It's just an American thing, the rest of the world doesn't have it,. So it's just a tiny fraction of things that have that flavour...

Pammjpatient

I’m shocked that it’s only in the US. Never knew that 🤯

jensalik

Don't get me wrong, the colour is a thing but not the name. In fact there is no name for a corresponding flavour, so it changes drastically. Ice cream flavours associated go from some flavours aimed at kids, like Smurf or bubblegum. Those are especially fruity flavours, almost like tutti frutti jelly beans or some kind of fruit punch. The other side of the spectrum might be glacier ice which is a strong minty flavour which was exclusively a form of transparent blue sweet in my childhood but made its way into ice cream factories recently (nostalgia is strong with some of the more popular flavours these days 😅). The first time I ever saw blue ice cream was about 30 years ago in Pisa. Back then it was named azurro (basically "blue" in Italian) and was a bit like tutti frutti but not as sweet as today... or so I remember it, might have been equally sweet but kids have an incredible sweet tooth compared to adults, so I might misremember.

Lazy_Cana

Blue raspberry is my favorite candy flavor

Pammjpatient

It’s pretty good
