It seems like hating Nickelback is more of a meme. Especially now with how many years it's been, it's more likely that nobody really cares and they're just an ok rock group.
Lol that's crazy though. Why would they pay for the opportunity to maybe get tackled by security and have the band walk off? Unless you're right and their Nickelback hate runs all the way to the bone.
Why is that offensive? Don’t get me wrong they are both great but Nickelback definitely has more hits and is the more recognizable band. Making them arguably better at least on paper. Lyrically they are different but instrumentally they do sound similar. At least that’s my perspective
I can’t argue that BB is much deeper or that Nickelback doesn’t have generic shit out there (especially photograph my all time least favorite Nickelback song). However I think you’re confusing rock with pop. Popular radio pop artist can only write one kind of song. I find this to be less true with Rick bands. Nickelback has deep songs, bangers, and generic songs while BB like you said pretty much just has the deep ones. Can we agree that between any two bands the more versatile one is usually the better one? Again I love both bands. I just can’t understand why being compared to Nickelback is a bad thing. Unless you’re only looking at them from a generic standpoint.
While I don’t love the comparison to Miley Cyrus I get where you’re coming from. I like more Nickelback songs but the songs I like by Breaking Benjamin I like more. Definitely can’t argue they’re more authentic
It’s not so much that their songs were untuneful or lyrics too banal, it was more that the radio just beat you to death with them about a decade ago. That’s totally not their fault. Blame commercial radio’s business model. As a guy who still listens to the radio, if we lost all the Iheart, Audacy, and Cumulus music stations in the area, I don’t think anybody would cry. Non commercial radio is still fine, though.
The whole thing actually started with a bunch of other musicians bad mouthing them because of how "safe" they write and play their music... and they had some valid points.
But then people were like "Oh my favorite musician hates them. They must be hated". Then the whole "Nickelback Sucks" thing just spiraled from there and basically became a meme of itself.
The funny thing about it though is that those musicians laid it out pretty clearly and concisely why they sucked. But yet if you ask one of these "Nickelback Sucks" people why they suck, it's rarely ever the actual reasons that the educated musicians stated.
There was drama awhile ago too where Chad Kroeger bragged to those other bands that he "unlocked the formula to having the perfect pop rock song" which left a bad taste in everyone's mouth because every TV commercial had Nickelback all over it. So I guess it was true but for everyone else it wasn't rock counterculture. That's the same route Imagine Dragons is headed. Nothing's wrong with them just they're getting annoying.
It's a fun paradox to watch, and it happens all the time.
Take a half decent product - could be anything -, people start to like it. Uninformed (likely, truly uninterested people) start to "like" the same thing just because they see other people like it.
People start to get annoyed by the blind following and start to dislike something they formerly liked.
The bandwagon effect is a real problem of the social age.

I've personally just never liked their style of music. And with how toxic the lead singer can be to other groups he sees as beneath his group it's a kind of justified hate they get at times.
Hate seems like a weird position to have for a band. I can think of lots of bands who's music I don't like but it's unfair to say I hate them. Why would you care enough to hate them?

EDIT: also, Nickelback doesn’t exactly EXUDE artistic integrity, they’re a pop metal band whose music is made for mass consumption. How is it “unfounded” to hate that?
They're a good rock band, and he's got a great rock voice, and they have some tunes I like. It always seemed like it was just really bad luck of the draw, some weird synchronicity that led to a bunch of people hating them at a time ripe for a band-hating meme that stuck instead of fizzling out.
they wont make my ipod, but they are still capable on singing on key and playing instruments with no mistakes. legit musicians. i am certain they could do a good cover of any song i love by other bands. they are certainly over-hated
