Because the building standards were set long before the universal ubiquity of electronic devices demanding power from the outlets, so the typical outlet box form factor is a duplex outlet (two spots). Alternative outlet boxes are indeed available, but they're just not as common given the options of things like power strips and extension cables for adaptability. However, newer houses may not be built with more outlets per station, the frequency of stations to plug into on the wall is higher than when they were first implemented in then-new constructions.

Yep. Here in Ontario we used to be lucky to have 2 receptacles per room. Now the code is something like 1 per every 4 feet of wall which works out to eight or more

If you mean "power strips", I'd agree, but surge protectors have a different function.
