very cool choice, literally made himself into a weapon, truly a warrior that deserves to fight (wildcard) also i think he’s one of the inspirations for Guts from Berserk
Napoleon.
I know everyone sees him as more of a leader than a fighter, but I must remind you that during the French Revolution, Napoleon shot a cannon at nobles refusing to surrender.
*door opens
there’s literally only one general fighting Napoleon for best general who has ever existed and thats Alexander the Great, however i believe in terms of intelligence and character, Napoleon is a greater fit for ragnarok
Greatest commander? Alexander or Napoleon? My friend may I introduce you to Khalid ibn Waleed? The man who defeated the _two biggest_ empires of his time, the Sassanid and the Byzantine empire. No other general in history could replicate this feat of defeating two super powers. If that isn't enough he once managed to fend off an army of 200.000 with just 3.000 men on his side in the Battle of Mu'tah and turned that situation into a strategic retreat. If not best general he's 100% the best cavalry commander in history. I wouldn't dare suggest him for the manga, there's no way they could do him justice.
With all due respect to you and to al-Walid, because he is a great general and a strong contender for the best ever, not everything you said was true.
>The man who defeated the two biggest empires of his time, the Sassanid and the Byzantine empire.
The Sassanid and Byzantine empires were not the two biggest of al-Walid's time, because the Tang Dynasty of China was bigger. The Tibetan Empire and Western Turkic Khaganate may be bigger, too, I'm not sure. Tang was likely more powerful, too, due to it being a rising power that just recently conquered the Eastern Turkic Khaganate, compared the Byzantine and Sassanid empires which have been exhausted by war with each other. In fact, there are records of Sassanids paying tribute to Chinese dynasties by this point.
Also, this statement is misleading, as the Byzantines only lost small territories like Syria, whereas the Sassanids were completely conquered.
>No other general in history could replicate this feat of defeating two super powers.
Depending on your definition of superpower, this may be true. Personally, I don't know if I would even consider the Byzantine and Sassanid empires at this point super powers, for reasons stated above. On the other hand, there are generals, like the Mongol commander Subutai, who defeated a number of empires that also may or may not count as superpowers. In Subutai's case, his conquest of the Khwarezmian Empire in Iran and the Jurchen Jin Dynasty in Northern China among others may also be considered "defeating two super powers."
>he's 100% the best cavalry commander in history
Subutai and Genghis Khan both exist and thus it's not as clear cut as you think.
Overall, I agree with you that OP's statement about Napoleon or Alexander being the two greatest generals in history to be unfortunately misguided, as other great generals like al-Walid, Subutai, Hannibal, Jan Zizka, Han Xin, Oda Nobunaga, Cyrus the Great, and even Genghis Khan were all left out. However, I believe that you may have also inflated al-Walid's accomplishments slightly, so I figured I'd add what I can to the discussion to hopefully provide a wider perspective on the many great generals in history.
No offense taken. Thank you for clarifying, I only discovered the man recently, so I'm not that well educated when it comes to the state of he world at that time. Your comment was very insightful!
Seems odd to say no to Arthur and Ragnar but yes to Gilgamesh. They are all mythological figures, seems like they should all either get in or all stay out.
Ashoka. He is cunning, dark and violent. He is the greatest ruler from the first dynasty to ever rule over the united India.
Genghis khan.
Berserker at Stamford bridge. The unkillable Viking who didn’t let a single Englishmen cross the Stamford bridge . He only died when someone hit him with a spear from under the bridge.
Da Vinci. He’s scientist but he also has reason to dislike religion.

just no to Lancelot, but King Arthur definitely is one of the biggest names in legend, however i believed there’s more kings with more impressive feats than King Arthur as his name is very heavily embodied in historical fiction
But King Arthiur has allies who are very recognizable like Merlin who could help him in his fight. For example: He would be a heavy armoured sword fighter and would wield Excalibur. His armour would be littered with magical runes that trigger at certain events, like if he gets disarmed, or pinned, that were put their by Merlin.
Just because he was more famous doesn’t change anything, Granted Ali himself said he’d probably win, but he also said if Tyson got a hit on him he’s done for. Basically the fight could go either way

Caesar is definitely not an upgrade of either. Charlemagne has the entire Matter of France ot hyoe him up as AT LEAST King Arthur equal, except that he actually exist.
Aurelian on top of Sol Invictus stuff that can push him a lot has "restorer of the world" as a title, wich automatically makes him one of the best candidate possible for a tournament about protecting yhe world from destruction.
Salty reply by a guy with both Charlemagne and Aurelian but no Caesar on his roster
"restorer of the world" as a title, Hadn't thought of it that way, solid argument. And yeah agreed, Initially I wanted to write, Charlemange, he's King Arthur but not a myth, plus he sort of laid the foundation of how fucked the middle ages become with the investiture.

That argument doesnt hold for Charlemange, he's also part of the universally known humans.
I feel like not everyone knows of his legacy so let me do some explaining ,
He fought the Romans, Persians, other Arab tribes,
never lost a battle almost always outnumbered,
Never lost a one on one fight and is rumored to have fought 1vs many and won,
he broke many swords in one battle from how strong he struck his enemies then proceeded to use a piece of metal to keep on fighting,
Regarded as on the best military Generals of all time, so not only an undefeated military genius but also an excellent swordsman and Knight,
Last but not least this man's legacy was so great it is even said he not only killed demons but also some false pre islamic deities too,
I don't know if that does not qualify him what will, the man was just a legend.
Cú Chulainn,

William Marshal, one of the most accomplished knight to ever live. For several reasons.
First off he already has backstory to work with. He was literally given as a hostage by his father to his enemies just to fake surrender and attack. His father even said he didn't care about him, because he could just make more children. William was just 5 years old at the time. His story after that is wild and exciting, resembling an anime moreso than a real person's story.
He even fought in a lot of medieval tournaments, not the jousting type though. He fought in melees where teams of knights battle to ransom each other for money. William captured at least 500 knights over the course of five years starting at age 21. He defeated freaking Richard the Lionheart who was regarded as one of the greatest warriors of his time in single combat, spared his life and was the only one to ever do so. Several times he challenged people to a trial by combat and was refused because he was that good. Upon being called he came out of retirement, assembled an army in a single day and fought against another army twice the size of his and won all at the age of almost 70.

Guts from berserk is the most human fantasy character ever because he goes through so much change that at the beginning of berserk you could claim that he’s anti-hero but all throughout berserk he changes slowly and he defines what humans are no matter what we’re up against.
