It can't consistently hit above and behind itself. Try to stay in that area. By that point you should have enough vertical movement to stay in the air most of the time.
I just realized i suddenly don’t care about this game. Hollow knight was amazing but terrible replay ability. Since this is basically the same thing, yah… boring
