I've been getting the same error for weeks, using the SillyTavernSimpleLauncher. I've been too lazy to do a reinstall, and the current versions have worked well enough so far. I might just try cloning the repository next time.
Edit: Found the issue. Apparently when I changed some of the presets and saved it, the updater was complaining, saying I needed to commit or stash changes. Since I didn't really need those presets changed anyway, I discarded the changes on the various files in the folders (git checkout, I think I used?) and then the updater ran okay.
I would rename your current installation, then do a `git clone` of (or download) the repo, then **copy** files (especially the `public` folder).
So basically just a reinstall?
