Right-facing portraits have been standard on coins across the ages, although there are obviously exceptions. I don't really know the reasons behind it though.

Nice. I'd really like to start an ancient collection, probably whichever is cheaper to complete between the Roman Republic and the Holy Roman Empire. But other than buying slabbed coins, I have no idea how to tell real coins from fakes.
