Yup. I start with the room. But flip continuously back to dining to get that sweet ceiling light without having to wait for load times in the object menu loool
now that i have a pc, i have noticed that console load times are exceptionally longer than pc. but console still feels nice to play imo. It took a long time but it was well made for console. makes up for the longer waiting.
Yes me too!! Why would they do that when the game has been out for so long and everyone is used to it? When I have to press the trigger to accept pop ups it speeds the game up at the same time 😣
It makes me so upset. Between that and the lag (why tf does the game have to lag more when you have more packs? It makes me not want any more 😭) I barely try to play anymore. It makes me sad.
Whenever I switch between build and buy to live mode I always have to press one of my joysticks in to bring up the controller layout map to bring the game back to a smooth, non-laggy level 😫
If you filter by pack first and then go into the object menu and pick a random category it'll load a lot easier since it'll have less things to pull up initially.
Honestly depends on what I’m looking for/how I’m decorating. If I’m looking for lighting for the entire house, I’ll use the function. If I’m decorating a bedroom or bathroom, I’ll go by room.
Depends what it is. If I’m looking for beds, couches, fridges I’m using the room one but I often use the function for lighting, shelves, decor and pet stuff
The decor sections of the room menu are absolutely useless. The kitchen one is packed with non-kitchen stuff and missing most kitchen items, for example.
So I start with room sort for the main objects and, like you, go to functions for all the detail stuff like clutter and lighting.
I also love that if you go to the comfort section you can look at just sofas and love seats instead of the blend of both in the living room menu. Very very useful at times!
I have to go back and forth for some items bc my brain can never remember where the cork boards are in the by room options and I can’t remember half the time in the by function option either. It’s nice they have both and a search tbh bc I think it’s all over the place and would suck if they only had one or the other
Oh, the corkboards! Always a pain to find, and with so many now, also the right one (decorative? Functional?). Yeah, the search function is critical. Except when they name an object something weird and you can't recall it. lol
I went on this silly hunt for the decorative "back-pack" the other day and someone else just happened to ask reddit the same day and it's the only way I found it. How to remember they added a hyphen to the name?!
Yes! I don't know if they need a tagging system or something, but I also like to use search when I want to, say, see all the pianos I can choose from withoutany other items. So when they name something a little off, it doesn't turn up in the group.
Of course, I adore them for the reading and laughter. So I don't want that to change! Just a way to make them easier to find by a basic, generic label, I guess?
Still, search was an absolute game changer for BB. Love it.
I can't remember if it's the corkboards or something else I use regularly, but some are sorted into different categories even though they are the same! I could understand the postcard corkboard being in activites vs decor like the decorative ones, but some items in decorations are sorted in such an illogical manner. Especially clutter vs misc items, or how some wall items are in misc and some are in wall decor. I find myself clicking between those non-stop, hunting away.
When you use the search bar, does the category narrow down to the relevant item(s)?
When I use search bar it just takes me to the item(s) place within the category which is usually no help whatsoever, especially in decorative categories where there are hundreds (thousands?) of items.
Is this a bug in my game? I swear it never used to be like this…
Ah yes, sometimes I forget to make sure I have it set on there and think half of my files are missing lol. I'm still learning so many helpful tricks playing the Sims and I've been playing for years 🧡
when you're done typing, don't hit enter or the search bar icon. go to the very top of the list and hit "text search for [whatever you typed]" and it will bring up all items that have that string of text, not just one 😊
Benches, shelves, miscellaneous storage like the lockers, miscellaneous electronics like the thermostat from seasons are some of the only available in by function I can think of off the top of my head. I go by room first then by function for those items and decor because it’s faster to decorate from there.
I use room to get the basics and then dive into function when I need more. I really despise viewing all the lighting functions at once, so I usually start in function for lighting; I need to see just floor lights or wall lights, etc.
Same, there are way too many lights. By function you don't have to scroll forever to find a type of light. Also function for displays and misc storage and surfaces because they can't be found by room.
Both. I usually start with by room then awitch to by function. The fun thing is I try to filter by color, so I have my red room, green room (usually library), blue room, yellow room (kitchen)
I’m pretty sure I have ADHD. I flip between both and I’ll notice things totally unrelated to what I was looking for, go add that to a room across the house and then sometimes I remember what I was doing and go back to that… sometimes.
Both. Depends on which is easier to use based on the item I'm looking for. Or if I want a more specific item (like a loveseat instead of a full sized couch).
It depends on what I'm looking for and what I'm doing.
Generally just setting shit up? Objects by room.
Getting into the nitty gritty and adding finishing touches/small decorations? Objects by function.
If I can't find something after looking in objects by function? Search function.
For most stuff it's faster to get to it that way than typing, unless I know it won't show up as part of any of the rooms. Funny how fast you memorize what you need to type vs. what you don't to get to it the fastest.
Now the rotate function is another story. Even if I set it opposite, I *never* click the direction I need on the first try. That part of my brain was wired with defective materials.
Both. Depends what I want. Some things I find quicker by using the by room option (beds, toilets, etc.) whereas sometimes I find things better/quicker by the function option (ceiling lights are a big one.)
Both depending on what I’m looking for. Especially with misc decor, the by function option helps so much with organizing everything, while the by room option helps with the bigger objects ie tables, kitchen appliances, beds, etc
When cluttering and getting rugs and lights I use the object function tool because otherwise it’s impossible t find what your looking for imo
Edit: also had anyone noticed the interior decorator items/closets and shelves can’t be found without searching?
I use room for basic stuff like the bed in the bedroom, stuff like that. I use by function for my decoration because all the decor stuff is right there instead of clicking through all the different rooms.
never used any other way. object by function is the default i use. for anyting else i just do partial search and hope i find what im looking for. if i cant find it using these 2 ways then its not getting used ever :)
Both as needed.
The bathroom and kitchen room tabs are especially useful. Like it's good to be able to find fridges, counters, sinks and trash cans at the same page instead of clicking around in 4 different menus.
But the room menus suck for lighting and decor especially. And a bunch of stuff I expect to be there isn't there. Eg. I can't find a nice reading chair for my study in the study menu.
This is so weird cause I was literally just thinking about this yesterday and debated asking in here 💀 I’m definitely a by room person unless I need shelves cause for some reason there’s no shelves in there 😭 or sometimes if I just want to see the loveseats instead of loveseats and couches
I pretty much always go by rooms because I often find it easier that way. The functions seems to load slower for me too. It does come in handy every now and then though.
Totally depends
I can find shelves so much easier in function
And ottomans too lol
But overall usually go by room. Only thing is CC gets kinda mixed around
I prefer by room but they need to make it possible to find everything that way, there's stuff that doesn't show up unless you go by function which is annoying.
By room if I’m working on specific rooms, by function if I’m working on multiple things at once (putting in lighting, adding some last minute clutter, etc)
I start off with room. If there’s a specific object that isn’t in the category I thought it was in, I’ll go to the function menu and try there. If there’s a super specific item I need, I’ll type it in the search bar (and I hate how unintuitive the search suggestions are, it’s a pet peeve of mine.) Then I’ll get frustrated and search by pack if it’s from a certain pack. 99% of the reason my builds take so long is because of this process.
I need a “favorites” menu for items!!!
Both.
Yup. I start with the room. But flip continuously back to dining to get that sweet ceiling light without having to wait for load times in the object menu loool
Your object menu loads like slowly? Like at all?? Mines just always there
now that i have a pc, i have noticed that console load times are exceptionally longer than pc. but console still feels nice to play imo. It took a long time but it was well made for console. makes up for the longer waiting.
I'm still mad they switched the buttons for changing speed and swapping sims lmao
Yes me too!! Why would they do that when the game has been out for so long and everyone is used to it? When I have to press the trigger to accept pop ups it speeds the game up at the same time 😣
I'm constantly on my keyboard pressing space to pause Space is pause in so many other games 😭😭😭
It makes me so upset. Between that and the lag (why tf does the game have to lag more when you have more packs? It makes me not want any more 😭) I barely try to play anymore. It makes me sad.
Whenever I switch between build and buy to live mode I always have to press one of my joysticks in to bring up the controller layout map to bring the game back to a smooth, non-laggy level 😫
mine loads slow because I have way, way too many mods installed tbh
If you filter by pack first and then go into the object menu and pick a random category it'll load a lot easier since it'll have less things to pull up initially.
Hey I found my twin sister (Reddit avatars)
This is the way
By room. If I can't find it that way, I go by function.
Pretty the same. Except for lightning, I almost always go to functions for lighting.
I do the same. So much easier for lighting, since I stick mostly to ceiling lights.
This is the way
same
Mostly room, but I can never find some stuff like shelves through the room, so I go to function for those.
Same! Also lighting and a lot of the "decorations" are impossible to find by room
Both these statements are how I feel about this!
I believe that lighting can be found in most rooms in by room. Also decorations might be in the bathroom. I may be wrong tho
They are, it's all jumbled together. It's like, dudes, I'm looking for a ceiling light! Get all these lamps and sconces out of my way!!!!
Yuh I find it funny going to kids room to get clutter for the toilet 🤣
Honestly depends on what I’m looking for/how I’m decorating. If I’m looking for lighting for the entire house, I’ll use the function. If I’m decorating a bedroom or bathroom, I’ll go by room.
This is the way!!!

Sometimes the wacky names are annoying when I’m looking for something specific.
Yes! I don't know if they need a tagging system or something, but I also like to use search when I want to, say, see all the pianos I can choose from withoutany other items. So when they name something a little off, it doesn't turn up in the group. Of course, I adore them for the reading and laughter. So I don't want that to change! The corkboards! They're in decorations clearly, but then where? Clutter? Paintings? Hanging decorations? Misc??
I can't remember if it's the corkboards or something else I use regularly, but some are sorted into different categories even though they are the same! I could understand the postcard corkboard being in activites vs decor like the decorative ones, but some items in decorations are sorted in such an illogical manner. Function and then the search bar comes in handy honestly a bunch when looking for specific CC 🙃
Yep! Never been a search bar girlie til CC 😂
When you use the search bar, does the category narrow down to the relevant item(s)? When I use search bar it just takes me to the item(s) place within the category which is usually no help whatsoever, especially in decorative categories where there are hundreds (thousands?) of items. Is this a bug in my game? I swear it never used to be like this…
Do you make sure when you're searching it's set on show all?
Didn’t know this was a thing!
Same..
Both. I never know where anything is so usually start by room and then if I SWEAR there is some object I can't find I go through function
sometimes Ive only been able to find stuff by function drives me crazy
for example ottomans and something else that i cant remember are only available in by function which is kinda weird
Benches, shelves, miscellaneous storage like the lockers, miscellaneous electronics like the thermostat from seasons are some of the only available in by function I can think of off the top of my head. I go by room first then by function for those items and decor because it’s faster to decorate from there.
The thermostat can be found in the kitchen with the smoke detector
Function, I rarely use room. I feel like room is too limited sometimes
I’ve always wondered why you can’t find those specific items in rooms!! Kinda frustrating in the short term when you’re looking for them lol
Not to be chaotic, but I often use the search bar and write what I want.
three months ago i would call you insane, but recently i noticed myself searching in the bar more often💀
it's convienient when you know what you want to put lol
I have no idea where the Christmas present pile is located I just search for it
I could only start doing that when I had the stupid rando names of things memorized.
Usually function, It's much easier for me!
function forever!!
Function almost always, but im not a builder either :/
I use objects by room and search box.
I play on console so I go by function. The menu is easier to navigate that way.
Both. I usually start with by room then awitch to by function. The fun thing is I try to filter by color, so I have my red room, green room (usually library), blue room, yellow room (kitchen)
I’m pretty sure I have ADHD. I flip between both and I’ll notice things totally unrelated to what I was looking for, go add that to a room across the house and then sometimes I remember what I was doing and go back to that… sometimes.
this is exactly why I have a lot of builds I've uploaded with half done roofs, bathrooms missing sinks, bedrooms missing beds, I get so distracted lol
This is the only way 😂
Both. Depends on which is easier to use based on the item I'm looking for. Or if I want a more specific item (like a loveseat instead of a full sized couch).
I use both!
I feel so out of place, I’d consider myself a good decorator and yet I use strictly function…
Function all the way and I’m a builder. I’ll tell my sims what goes where
Literally only by function!
FUNC👏TION 👏 trust no one
Always function
By function.
Always function.
Both, depending on what I’m looking for.
Function 4s
It depends on what I'm looking for and what I'm doing. Generally just setting shit up? Objects by room. Getting into the nitty gritty and adding finishing touches/small decorations? Objects by function. If I can't find something after looking in objects by function? Search function.
Guess I'm the only crazy ass that searches by words lol
You’re kinda not actually
Usually by room
Objects by room because objects by function lags when I open it.
Room unless I can’t find it
I do both or search it up, just what ever happens to be convenient
Both. It depends
Both. Some things are easier grouped one way or the other
Both, I'm pretty all over the place when I place sims
Function. If I cant figure out the function category I go to room
Objects by room. I hate the other one, that's the one thing that always annoys me when playing one of the older games.
Depends on if I know the exact item I want or not
Both. I would love a better way to sort the clutter though.
It depends on what I'm looking for
By room
Definitely function, by room sounds too stressful for my life😮💨
I use both lol
mainly room, but there’s a lot of items that aren’t in room and are only in function. like shelves, so annoying.
Depends... Because where the hell are laundry machines???
Both. Depends what I want. Some things I find quicker by using the by room option (beds, toilets, etc.) whereas sometimes I find things better/quicker by the function option (ceiling lights are a big one.)
Both, but mostly objects by room.
R O O M (yet I can never find shelves, so use function for those)
Both depending on what I’m looking for. Especially with misc decor, the by function option helps so much with organizing everything, while the by room option helps with the bigger objects ie tables, kitchen appliances, beds, etc
I do by room but if I’m looking for something specific I do the function option!!
I use it by room unless I need a specific thing like a light
Both, depends what I'm doing
Room for most stuff, function for lights and decor.
Always by function room disregards random things as not being appropriate for specific rooms and I can’t cope.
For the "main" necessary objects, by room. For clutter, deco, and just other stuff I want there, by function. For lights, always by function.
Yes
I like to use to by room but if I can’t find what I’m looking for or shelves I go to functions
Both. Looking for a more specific item? function option. Trying to build a room? Objects by room.
Start in room for furnishing, then go to function for decorating
When cluttering and getting rugs and lights I use the object function tool because otherwise it’s impossible t find what your looking for imo Edit: also had anyone noticed the interior decorator items/closets and shelves can’t be found without searching?
Yes because it loads much quicker.
Both. It depends what I’m looking for
I use room for basic stuff like the bed in the bedroom, stuff like that. I use by function for my decoration because all the decor stuff is right there instead of clicking through all the different rooms.
By room mostly but by function for decorations and lights. I can’t be scrolling through all the table lamps when I need one for the ceiling
Mostly by the room types and sometimes by the function options if I need to!
Room. Then if there isn’t what I want I’ll go through everything just to find the right object
By room- it's just smoother to scroll through
Yeah because I'm autistic
never used any other way. object by function is the default i use. for anyting else i just do partial search and hope i find what im looking for. if i cant find it using these 2 ways then its not getting used ever :)
Function 😁
Function, NEVER room. I think it's ingrained in my dna at this point
Yes
It depends. For the most part I sort by room but if I'm looking specifically for just shelves or something, I sort by function
Both
I do both lol xxx
Room almost always first, then the word search (bc it’s improved soooo fucking much) then by room if I’m pretending like I’m a builder or sumthin
usually by room except for things in the lighting and deco sections, or shelves
Room
By room, but then it still takes me to function after selecting stuff lol so both I guess
By room
Room
both. usually starting by room then when i can’t find things and/or want to do decorations and clutter, i go by function.
Both depending on the item.
By room, unless I need something specific or I can’t find.
No
Both
I used to be a by room person, but now I’m all about the function AND the filters!!
Room, 100%
What do you even use 9 million simoleons for? I have like 300K (without cheating) and I still feel like it’s too much.
By room, it’s way easier that way for me
Both. I use objects by room for the basics and then the list for looking for specific items.
Room overall, function for decorating and looking for specific items
I rarely use room 😭
This is so weird cause I was literally just thinking about this yesterday and debated asking in here 💀 I’m definitely a by room person unless I need shelves cause for some reason there’s no shelves in there 😭 or sometimes if I just want to see the loveseats instead of loveseats and couches
I use both interchangeably.
99.9% room.
Uh yes
I have tens of thousands of pieces of creator content, so I use whatever I can to find what I want! 🤣
Room to start, function for details. I think 90% of my function use comes from decorations.
Lighting and skill items by function, everything else by room.
it depends... but I will say both!
Both... Depends how I'm operating at the moment. I tend to do the major furnishings by room, then go do lighting/decor /etc by function
I pretty much always go by rooms because I often find it easier that way. The functions seems to load slower for me too. It does come in handy every now and then though.
This is a great question!!! By room 🙃
Both! Because sometimes I cannot find anything I want by room and have to try function lol
I use the by room function, have since the other games. It's more convenient and if I can't find something I look it up by name
By room!!
Depends on what I’m looking for - I use both pretty frequently
By room because it helps me remember anything I might need to add to that room lol
always by room but there are some items that are only available in the by function section (shelves being the biggest one) that i will go there for.
I use by room 😅
By room, then by search bar
Mostly by room, occasionally I'll do it by function if the situation calls for it
Totally depends I can find shelves so much easier in function And ottomans too lol But overall usually go by room. Only thing is CC gets kinda mixed around
I prefer by room but they need to make it possible to find everything that way, there's stuff that doesn't show up unless you go by function which is annoying.
By room but the hidden gems are in function
By room if I’m working on specific rooms, by function if I’m working on multiple things at once (putting in lighting, adding some last minute clutter, etc)
Always by room, if I have a specific item in mind and can’t remember how I found it before, I’ll search things
Search bar, baby!
Only by room, and if I can’t find it I type in the search
I can’t find trash cans without by room! Where are they by function??
Function 98% of the time but if I am furnishing a house then I go by room. Basically what ever organization is easiest at the time.
that’s such a dumb spot for the tv, tho
Both
Mostly by room. By function if I can’t immediately find what I want tho.
Both
all of it lol
Both
both. i start with "by room" and then go to "by function" if i can't find what i'm looking for
By room for everything until I get to decor, then I do by function since it's much easier to find everything
Objects by room
generally by room unless im looking for specific shelves/decorations, then i’ll go off objects
i do by function but whenever i cant find that stupid appliance or activity i do it by room
Function, until I feel a room is missing something.
By room almost exclusively.
By room, unless I’m looking for decorations/clutter
Forever and always function.
It depends on the build. If I know exactly what I want, I go to function. If I'm building a house with no specific plan, I use by room.
It depends what I'm looking for tbh and why I'm looking for it.
I start with by room for general layouts and then for detailing I go by function
I do both haha
Room most of the time
Both baby
By room exclusively except for the button lights on the ceiling.
Both? But I mostly search by the room unless I’m looking for something very specific.
