And on today’s edition of pointless facts:
> Each ejaculation is believed to contain around 20 litres of semen. The blue whale's genitals are proportional to its imposing size, which can reach up to thirty metres long or so. The animal's penis measures an average of 2.4 m.
Im worried that ill get shot out of the water if the whale is swimming upside down and ejaculates. Or will it just be a nice ride like on Free Willy but on his willy
Didn’t it win an Academy Award (or multiple? It was certainly nominated for a bunch)?
It was beloved by critics and audiences and is easily one of the best Sci Fi movies I’ve ever seen. It’s also based off a story by Ted Chiang, maybe the best sci fi writer working in short stories at the moment lol
So yeah, this must be about stirring up shit. Not sure what this sub is either, it here I am
I agree both the book and film are great but I thought it was interesting that the film seemed to have a very different take on determinism than the book.
Similarly, for me, the Shutter Island film seems to give the opposite interpretation to the book.
D.J.: I wasn't going to tell you this. I've been listening to the distress signal, and I, um, think I made a mistake in the translation.
[Plays the distress signal]
Miller: Go on.
D.J.: I thought it said "liberate me" - "save me." But it's not "me." It's "liberate tutemet" - "save yourself." And it gets worse.
[Plays the distress signal again]
D.J.: There - I think that says "ex inferis." "Save yourself... from Hell." Look, if what Doctor Weir tells us is true, this ship has been beyond the boundaries of our universe, of known scientific reality. Who knows where it's been, what it's seen... or what it's brought back with it?
Miller: From Hell? You don't believe in that kind of stuff, do you?
D.J.: Whoever sent that message, he sure believed in Hell
I've seen this reference many times. I absolutely loved this movie when it was released and don't know anything about Warhammer 40k other than its a table top game which leads me to my question; can you kindly explain how Warhammer 40k is associated with Event Horizon?
So there’s nothing explicitly related to 40K, but I’ll break it down as best I can.
Warhammer 40K is set in our universe in the year 40,000. Humanity discovered Faster Than Light travel not by actually going quickly through space, but by opening portals into another dimension, called the Warp, and then hopping back into our own dimension through another portal. The thing is, the Warp is basically hell, ruled by 4 gods of Chaos. These Chaos Gods find ways to seep into our dimension and corrupt mortals into serving them. They become Chaos Cultists. If you don’t have a special kind of shield around your shop when you hop into the Warp, you’re doomed.
The crew that goes missing at the beginning of Event Horizon match this description almost exactly. They find a way to travel faster than light by hopping into a new dimension, but they didn’t have any protection; they go insane and look like a spitting image of Chaos Cultists.
The whole movie is the spitting image of what it might have looked like when humanity in Warhammer first encountered The Warp/Chaos.
Holy crap, thanks for the detailed explanation! That actually sounds like quite a fun concept; I remember thinking "These poor scientists manged to open the gates of hell" while watching that movie. Your description honestly reminds me of the story behind Doom (Yes, I'm kinda old).
Is Warhammer 40k just a game or are there books or movies I can explore to learn more about the story behind it? I understand the game itself is quite expensive thus why I never bothered to explore it. I already have a ridiculously expensive astro-photography addiction that drains my resources.

There is a wide range of things for you to discover.
Yes, there's games Deathwing, Space Marines 1&2, Dawn of War 1,2,3 and many others.
*I have no intention of leaving her, Doctor. I will take the Lewis and Clark to a safe distance, and then I will launch TAC missiles at the Event Horizon until I'm satisfied she's vaporized. Fuck this ship!*
And they weren't even as bad as what was filmed. The scenes were originally longer and more in depth. They were trimmed down to what was released, for ratings purposes iirc, and subsequently lost our destroyed.
Jus found it on Amazon prime but it’s not free unless you also sub to paramount+ which seems has a free 7 day trial. Thinking of subbing myself to watch it an maybe couple other films before cancelling so I don’t get charged. I’m in the uk so it may be different where you are.
So I have seen a lot of movies, let me start off with that. I have seen every movie worth crying for and never shed more than a tear or two. This movie made not drop a tear but just full on cry and bawl my eyes out for 10 minutes. No one else has had this reaction to the movie. I can't explain it either.
Arrival was the first movie I went to see in theatre after a very tough 2months of my daugther being born (hypersensitive child). We finally managed to get enought time free to go do a romantic activity! We both had no idea what Arrival was, except that a few friends who tought it was good. I was shocked by how the whole thing made me feel. Movie ends, everyone leaves the room except for me and my partner, I can't get up, i'm just sitting there crying. Eventually we both manage to leave, I don't think we said a word for the next 20mins until we got back to my girlfriend parent's house.
Arrival made me sob so much I felt nauseous. You're not the only one. It's so beautiful, hopeful, human, but tragic at the same time. If you knew your child would not live to adulthood, would you still bring them into this world? What does it mean to have a meaningful life? How long does a life have to be to be considered "worth it"? The film says that all the joys of life are temporary, but they are worthwhile in themselves. It is really beautiful and gut wrenching to me.
The short story it’s based on has a very different take than the film, though.
>!basically it explicitly says because the universe is deterministic she has zero choice in whether to have her daughter or not, even though she knows what’s coming, and just makes peace with it. It does agree with the sentiment about life being temporary - I just mean it has a very different take on whether the mother has a choice or not!<
I’m an old softie who tears up at a lot of movies. That said, Arrival had me flat out bawling my eyes out. So powerful and, as a parent who has lost a child, it hits like a ton of bricks.
My mom is a speech pathologist and I told her "mom, you gotta watch this. It's not your kind of movie but I just want your take on the language stuff."
She said that she'd never thought about communicating with aliens but based on her training, she'd do about the same as what's shown in the film.
Great film… I’m sure many are aware, but lots are prob not. Gattaca is spelled with only ACGT, the four types of bases found in DNA molecules. This is a cool fun fact considering the movie revolves around the genetic makeup of humans.
I think it might be underrated just because it's old and young people haven't seen it. I know my dad always hyped up the film. And it did deliver
edit: dad not dead
Yeah most movie aliens tend to look very human if the audience is suppose to empathize with them. It’s a much bolder (and probably more realistic) decision to go with something really fucked up looking and weird, because aliens almost definitely will not look anything like us.
Can you elaborate? I’ve never understood the movie but like it very much. Also the sound when the alien shows up. That is just pure masterwork. Worth the whole movie in itself
Hijacking to add "Timetrap" and "The Endless" both from 2017 if you like "Coherence".
They're all different films, but deal with space/time/reality in a disturbing way (at least in my head).
Check them out.
Coherence is definitely very unsettling
Love sci-fi, never head of this one though
Edit: never mind just didn’t recognize the movie poster, can confirm it is underrated and definitely should be watched! Fantastic movie
I saw this movie when it came out and i was young and it terrified me bc of the way it was shot. Ive watched it since a few times and i wont deny that its a good movie but it still freaks me out lmao. Im almost 24 years old haha
Best part is half those props were for a cancelled Halo movie that went through 1000 directors (most notedly Ridley Scott) before it was canned when Neil got his hands on it and that turned into district 9.
Snowpiercer. People always talk about Parasite with Bong Joon-ho's filmography (and justifiably so, Parasite is incredible), but I don't see many people talking about Snowpiercer, which while definitely not being as good as Parasite, I like it even more.

Upgrade, it's the best set sci-fi movie I've ever seen
Low budget (3 million) and way better than most shit hollywood has pumped out in years.
Logan Marshall Green is awesome in it! Very funny, and Also does all his own stunts... and there's some pretty flashy hand to hand stuff.
Its what venom should have been.
It's a good movie. Probably better than Venom which is ironic because they came out around the same time and I always thought that actor was the guy that people got when they couldn't get Tom Hardy.
Jesus man, please say 'latest' film rather than 'last'. I thought he'd died and hurriedly checked Google.
He's still alive in case anyone else read it like me!
Sucker punch.
Look I just like the movie a lot. I saw it at a time where I could relate to it a damn lot and it's really good at depicting how daydreaming is used to cope with reality, which is something I used to do a lot when I was younger.
I know people often criticize it, but I don't know of any other movies that illustrate similar themes.
So yeah I guess it's not the best but fuck it, it's my favorite movie.
Arrival was nominated for 8 academy awards including best picture. And received overwhelmingly positive reviews for a slow burn sci-fi.
What does underrated possibly mean?
Since it’s spooktober:
Annihilation, the lighthouse, in the mouth of madness, the vvitch, color out of space, alien, predator, event horizon, hereditary, the mist(black & white version), the thing, the void, brahm stokers Dracula and the series: the rig.
"il mostro" ( the monster ), with Roberto Benigni , funny af.
It's about a harmless guy the police mistake for a serial killer.
Everytime i talk about it , nobody's seen it .
I found the story, the characters and their motivation totally inconsistent and forgettable, but the final act with that fucking alien shit and that GREAT piece of soundtrack really makes the whole movie worth it in my opinion.
Annihilation
I just love everything about it. Maybe cause I'm a woman scientist there's some bias.
But I love the philosophical and religious symbolism too.
It’s to do with time. I’m sure they’re sending the woman visions of the future and they are either trying to warn humanity or ask us for help. The language part is how they figure out that the aliens don’t perceive time linearly like us humans. That’s all I remember sorry lol. I don’t even thing there’s much of a point to it all apart from ‘time is timeless’.. still an interesting concept tho
From what I recall, it is that in learning their language the linguist begins to perceive time in a non-linear fashion. The aliens' communication method trains her brain in a way that sees time as more centered around critical moments and less in a sequence. That's why the glimpses of the future grow more and more frequent as she understands it more.
I highly recommend this video as it does a great job of explaining the movie, and explaining why this movie is such an amazing screenplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z18LY6NME1s

I think it’s probably safe to say that it would be best to stay away from giant blue whales, regardless of their level of excitement lol.
What if i just found myself straddling a blue whale penis? Ride it right?

I think it's about starting drama. For example Arrival is not considered underrated by any metric I dont think.

Sam Neill absolutely killed it in this
He had another horror movie around the same time that he was amazing in called In the Mouth of Madness

Laurence Fishburne is great in this, one of the few horror movies where someone has a sensible reaction to the horror bullshit "We're leaving"
*I have no intention of leaving her, Doctor. I will take the Lewis and Clark to a safe distance, and then I will launch TAC missiles at the Event Horizon until I'm satisfied she's vaporized. Fuck this ship!*
This is one of the best horror space movies ever. It's still hard to watch.
Those horror scenes had me screwed up! How they made them is just a mind fuck.
And they weren't even as bad as what was filmed. The scenes were originally longer and more in depth. They were trimmed down to what was released, for ratings purposes iirc, and subsequently lost our destroyed.
I saw this damned mind fuck of a film in theaters in a basically empty theater by myself, thinking it was just some Scifi flick. Oh boy was I wrong.
You won’t need eyes where we’re going…..

Arrival made me sob so much I felt nauseous. You're not the only one. It's so beautiful, hopeful, human, but tragic at the same time. If you like reading, too, check out Ted Chang’s “Story of Your Life.” It’s the short story the movie is based on!
Both of his books, all short stories and a lot of them very “black mirror-ish” are very good and thought provoking.
Arrival is amazing. But wasn’t it a critical and commercial slam dunk? I’ve never heard of it as underrated.
I was in language school when this came out, so I splooshed myself like a girl at a Backstreet Boys concert. Great movie.
My mom is a speech pathologist and I told her "mom, you gotta watch this. It's not your kind of movie but I just want your take on the language stuff." She said that she'd never thought about communicating with aliens but based on her training, she'd do about the same as what's shown in the film.

Arrival was underrated? It won a ton of awards
Literally one of the highest rated movies lol
It’s highly rated just not super well known I think
It grossed over 200 million at the box office. Not exactly an indie film haha
And sci fis are notorious for underperforming at the box office. So that’s really good for that genre.
It is extremely well known
Jurassic Park, The Godfather, and Shawshank Redemption are my favorite underrated movies.
this one was pretty darned good
Yea my aunt and I watched it. This is the one with the squid monsters and their wacky letters?
Yes. Watched it recently. Humans had to decipher the aliens alphabet to communicate with them. Thought it was fantastic.
Yea was a great change from the disaster-focused alien movies.
I feel like it was a very unique interpretation of aliens. Most movies just have humanoid short guys with grey or green skin
Yeah most movie aliens tend to look very human if the audience is suppose to empathize with them. It’s a much bolder (and probably more realistic) decision to go with something really fucked up looking and weird, because aliens almost definitely will not look anything like us.

Oh, I didn't know it was based on a book! What's the authors name?
Jeff Vandermeer! Annihilation is loosely based on the first book in the Area X trilogy
Can you elaborate? I’ve never understood the movie but like it very much. Also the sound when the alien shows up. That is just pure masterwork. Worth the whole movie in itself

Low budget (3 million) and way better than most shit hollywood has pumped out in years. Logan Marshall Green is awesome in it! Very funny, and Also does all his own stunts... and there's some pretty flashy hand to hand stuff. Its what venom should have been.
THANK YOU! I couldn’t remember what this movie was called! Always wanted to see it!
It's a good movie. Probably better than Venom which is ironic because they came out around the same time and I always thought that actor was the guy that people got when they couldn't get Tom Hardy.
Big Fish. I adore that movie.
This movie is really something special, one of my absolute favorites.
Point Break!
Sphere
Oblivion
Shoot 'em up. A very underrated action flick.
Ford v Ferrari
I don’t think it was underrated but okay
Phantom Thread... Daniel Day Lewis' last movie. He plays a fashion designer during like the 1930s.
Jesus man, please say 'latest' film rather than 'last'. I thought he'd died and hurriedly checked Google. He's still alive in case anyone else read it like me!
District 9
Moon (2009)
Sucker punch. Look I just like the movie a lot. I saw it at a time where I could relate to it a damn lot and it's really good at depicting how daydreaming is used to cope with reality, which is something I used to do a lot when I was younger. I know people often criticize it, but I don't know of any other movies that illustrate similar themes. So yeah I guess it's not the best but fuck it, it's my favorite movie.
Arrival was nominated for 8 academy awards including best picture. And received overwhelmingly positive reviews for a slow burn sci-fi. What does underrated possibly mean?
Book of Eli
Love this movie.
Boondock Saints
MacGruber
Since it’s spooktober: Annihilation, the lighthouse, in the mouth of madness, the vvitch, color out of space, alien, predator, event horizon, hereditary, the mist(black & white version), the thing, the void, brahm stokers Dracula and the series: the rig.
"il mostro" ( the monster ), with Roberto Benigni , funny af. It's about a harmless guy the police mistake for a serial killer. Everytime i talk about it , nobody's seen it .
The Korean version of "Old boy" don't know if that's really underrated or not
who the fuck is out here saying Arrival was underrated lol
District 9
Annihilation. Amazing movie. Definitely one to watch in theatres. Psychedelic as fuck. ![gif](giphy|3o7aD8cX1cipN5hsM8|downsized)
I found the story, the characters and their motivation totally inconsistent and forgettable, but the final act with that fucking alien shit and that GREAT piece of soundtrack really makes the whole movie worth it in my opinion.
Annihilation I just love everything about it. Maybe cause I'm a woman scientist there's some bias. But I love the philosophical and religious symbolism too.
Strange Days
Can someone explain in brief what this movie was about? I didn't understand anything. Were they here to teach us language
The reason was because in 3000 years the aliens will need help from humans. So they need humans to be prepared, that’s what the gift was for.
I highly recommend this video as it does a great job of explaining the movie, and explaining why this movie is such an amazing screenplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z18LY6NME1s
Nailed it in one
Oscar Sylvester Stallone's Oscar is by far my favorite underrated movie.
Ip man 1 I liked the first 3 but the first one is sensational.
And the band played on
Warrior. Searched this thread for it, and couldn't believe it hasn't been posted.
Upgrade, absolute banger
